Thanks to The Spoiler Fairy for sending us the following..

LUCK: From acclaimed director Michael Mann and "Deadwood" creator David Milch, the nine-episode season stars Oscar® winner Dustin Hoffman and Oscar® nominee Nick Nolte. The drama series takes a behind-the-track look at the world of horse racing and gambling's denizens – owners, trainers, jockeys and gamblers.

-- Episode #1: "Pilot": As the series opens, Chester "Ace" Bernstein (Dustin Hoffman) is released from three years in federal prison, and met by his driver and bodyguard, Gus Demitriou (Dennis Farina), who fronts as the owner of the $2 million Irish horse that Ace just bought. A brilliant but disreputable trainer, the Peruvian Turo Escalante (John Ortiz), introduces us to their prized Irish thoroughbred, being examined by his girlfriend, track veterinarian Jo (Jill Hennessy). Meanwhile, veteran trainer-turned-owner Walter Smith (Nick Nolte) contains his optimism pinned on his promising "Big Horse" because he's wary. Of what, we're unsure, but we learn there's a dark history and a shadow of scandal behind the horse. Four degenerate gamblers, Marcus (Kevin Dunn), Renzo (Ritchie Coster), Jerry (Jason Gedrick), and Lonnie (Ian Hart), meanwhile, are pooling their meager resources to bet Jerry's hunch on the day's longshot, a high stakes Pick Six winners contest. (Created by David Milch; executive producers, David Milch, Michael Mann and Carolyn Strauss; producer, Dustin Hoffman.)
(Written by David Milch; directed by Michael Mann.) Playdates: December 11 (after Boardwalk Empire); January 29, 30 and 31

  1. Jill Hennessy is in this? I didn't know that! Awesome, so I'm in.

  2. Hopefully something good during the holiday season.

  3. Sounds like an interesting start to the show. Then again those actors could probably do an entire episode on watching paint dry and make it interesting.

  4. Hoffman, Farina, and Gedrick make me want to see this bigtime. Jill Hennessy I liked a lot in "Law and Order," "Crossing Jordan," not so much. She's a crapshoot, as far as I'm concerned. What worries me about this show is the presence of Nick Nolte; the guy is seldom better than awful.

  6. Some of the cast is a surprise. And what an odd mix of folks too!

  7. Honestly, they had me at HBO.... Than toss in Richard Kind, Farina and Hoffman (not in that order) and I was locked in.

I'm not too familiar with Hennesy having never watched Crossing Jordan after the pilot I disliked and never having been a fan or L&O.

Nolte is a crapshoot to me more than just bad I guess. He did some great stuff a decade or two ago like The Thin Red Line, Prince of Tides and Affliction ...  The only recent film I liked him in was Hotel Rwanda I guess.  I think maybe he still can be good in that disheveled, "barely there" incoherent roles that mimics his real life. XD This seems to play to his strengths as far as I can tell.

  8. Nolte has been like that since 1988,that's when i would catch him in the bar, knocking one down, and down.He was doing pretty good for a while in the early 90's but then he went down hill again.
The pilot really sounds interesting,i'm in! :)

  9. Sad when talented people spiral downward...
Well when anyone spirals, but I don't notice the untalented as much. XD
