“To clarify: any Doctor Who movie would be made by the BBC team, star the current TV Doctor and certainly NOT be a Hollywood reboot.”
Moffat contextualised Yates’ remark in another tweet, saying: “David Yates, great director, was speaking off the cuff, on a red carpet.”
In a statement issued to a national newspaper, Moffat said that Doctor Who is “a vitally important BBC brand with a huge international audience” and one which “not even Hollywood can start from scratch”.
The producer also revealed that as yet “there simply are no developed plans for a Doctor Who movie at the moment” but “if and when the movie happens it will need to star television's Doctor Who - and there's only ever one of those at a time.

Hmmm, not sure what to make of this. Yates, Tranter and BBC Worldwide are actively seeking a writer and have confirmed it won't be a TV tie-in, so maybe this is just what Moffat wishes, or is there a contractual position that he knows of that means the licence can't be granted?
ReplyDeleteI sent this earlier to DarkUFO but he told me this info was already posted. Hmmm.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I have to agree with Moffat on this one
ReplyDeleteI hope that Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman) gets to be in the movie if it does get made.
ReplyDeleteLooking at the tag, there is no item that involves Moffat's opinion about a DW movie...but then there has been a lot of movie talk
ReplyDeleteI sent it to him via twitter and email but i guess he forgot to post it earlier.
ReplyDeleteDid you do a submission, I didn't one for this or I would have credited you, sorry :(
ReplyDeleteYes i did a submission. I clicked the "Submit Scoop".
ReplyDeleteI'll edit your name in :) I only saw it due to DWM's tweet.
ReplyDeleteThanks
ReplyDeleteI just don't see how it's possible though, it would mean having to take the show off air for a year in order to do :( I know I'd rather have the show as it is and then a second canon running as regular films :D
ReplyDeleteHe's rather pompously said he'll do it if Tennant is the Doctor 9_9 I'd rather have a stand alone film anyway, otherwise the arguments over canon will be just make it fail, lol.
ReplyDeleteTotally agree with Moffat on this. Doctor Who don't need a movie version if is not with the TV cast and the TV storyline
ReplyDeleteWell I agree, not sure what to think now either . Would still like to see a Doctor Who movie but not sure it is ever going to happen.
ReplyDeleteI think it will, esp as it now has Jane Tranter behind it, she's the main reason that it came back in 2005 so we know how persistent she can be. I'm taking what Moff has said here with a rather large pinch of salt, he says himself that he lies as much as the Doctor does XD
ReplyDeleteYes but Moffat said that there are no plans to do a movie and I was agree with him. I agree with you. I'd rather have the 13 episodes and specials over a movie
ReplyDeleteWell, it's all a bit perplexing, but I'm glad to see Moffat's comments all the same. His version of the story is certainly what /ought/ to be true...
ReplyDeleteI'd love both, as long as each are done well I can't see the problem. It's just that I don't want canon to run through both, they need to be stand alone :D
ReplyDeleteI'm surprised it's taken this long for the idea of a movie, when you think how big the Doctor Who brand is now. I hope they don't just go overboard with locations and effects just because they can though.
ReplyDeleteI get what you're saying and if it was possible then I would love it. Of course they should be standalone although I would love strands of canons to connect both just a little
ReplyDeleteThe idea has been kicking around for some time now, there was one about Johnny Depp and Time Burton being involved in one last year iirc. Now that would have been a very bad move, and a good example of going overboard like you mention XD
ReplyDeleteI think if they start from the beginning again it would be nice to mention the classic stories maybe. It's the canon of what is happening to 11, or 12 if Smith has left by then (which I imagine he will have) which needs to be protected so that they don't interfere with the current team.
ReplyDeleteAlso, the moaning from fans about what is canon will just be unbearable XD
