I enjoyed this ep so hard! Although it was just them on a simple ghost case I loved the tension between the brothers (well from Sam) and Dean trying to crack jokes to liven the mood when he was around Sam. Advice from Ellen beyond the grave get Dean in gear to tackle the tension, whoot! I didn't see Slash fiction so I was confused about their separation at the beginning (I'll watch SF later)
YESSS!!!! We're two for two...two excellent episodes in a row with classic Supernatural vibes! I'm loving this!! Great case...the deaths were appropriately gruesome, the baddie was a total dick...ah, just like old times. Finally Dean comes clean and tells Sam what he needs to hear, whether Sam realizes it or not. That was a great scene. The stuff in the museum was excellent too...many subtle messages about siblings working together, ya think? But it looks like it did the job...got through to Sam. And leave it to Ellen to reach out from the other side and get through to Dean. You rock, Ellen, even as a spirit! And working together to stop the baddie was definitely aweseome...again, classic SPN. Some good quotes along the way... "Real woo woo crap"...awesome! "You affirmate me again and I'll punch you in the face!" Then I was cringing waiting for the last five minutes wondering if they were going to punch us in the gut again, but MAN was that worth the wait! Freakin' FINALLY...Dean sounding human, Sam forgiving him and Dean coming clean about all the crap that's been weighing on him. Can we all say MAJOR sigh of relief? Now let's get back to kicking bad guy ass, shall we? Oh and now that the boys are back to being the boys...could we PLEASE get the Impala back too? Seeing them driving around in other cars is just so wrong! But I's a happy camper otherwise...SIGH!!!
My only gripe, being from rural Indiana, is NOBODY can dig a hole like that. No clumps?? Come on, man! I've dug thousands upon thousands of holes in my life. And I NEVER got a nice pile of crumbly dirt like that. Plus, IT'S CLAY!! It's heavier than he**!! They'd be exhausted digging that with one shovel.
I loved it. It felt like old time Supernatural. It had the gruesome deaths, I mean a guy got forked to death! :) And it had the spook factor, as well as the interplay between the brothers.
There were a LOT of subtle messages in this episode too. Every psychic they ran into had some little dig or word to the wise. Twice they brought up an older sibling taking care of a younger one and again in the preview to next week. I think maybe that is Dean's 'secret', he can't 'take care' of Sam anymore. Sam's all grown up.
Cudos to the Ellen visit, that was just perfect. And Dean finally letting Sam have it had me cheering. It was about time and they both needed it.
And the ending.. what can I say? We finally had the boys back. It felt really, really good.
LOL I thought the same thing! They always dig perfectly rectangular graves with clean edges. If they ever quit hunting they could get jobs as grave diggers. :)
The museum docent was creepy with his message from Ellen...but go Ellen! Guide the boys from beyond the grave. Ok episode, almost classic Supernatural, just need more music. Very glad the air has been cleared. Scared me for a moment when Dean asked Sam what he was doing putting his bag in the trunk, worried Sam would walk away - but they're a team again, at least until next week.
The promo made it seem like a dream type environment...can't wait.
True the holes are perfectly square, the dirt is always the texture of silty loam well screened. No true grave would be perfectly square all the way down if it was dating back that old. They mentioned in The Real Ghostbusters about how Sam and Dean make it look easy...and I guess I just truly showed my geekness didn't I? :)
I am happy with the ep too that god they are back together and I do miss the car. It was a good ep but next week HELL YES! that will be a AWESOME! ep so cant wait.
I loved the episode - good, traditional Supernatural MoTW. Best of all the boys are back on track. Together. Now all we need is the Impala back and we can get on with kicking leviathan butt.
Wow, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this episode! 3 in a row now that have been awesome for me! All the little things here and there, like Ellen reaching across the veil to bitchslap Dean back into reality, and at the end where they both finally gave in and said that the other was right. The story was fairly rehashed, but it still felt fresh for some reason. The deaths were well-done, and nice and gory. :)
I saw the same thing. I said "I swear they reuse that can all the time. They must pick up all the salt before they leave and recycle it on the next case or something..."
This was an actually well-implemented "back to basics" episode...And yet it was placed well in the world of season 7, and dealt with lasting issues like the Levia-Brothers, and settled the whole Amy thing. great great great episode.
Lol! I actually didn't at first...I'm attributing that to the fact that it's very late where I am and my brain isn't exactly firing on all cylinders. :D
Nice to see that one again Sam was made a prop for Dean's emotions/thoughts/feelings/story. Way to go, writers. Oh, and I just LOVED how they forgot to acknowledge that it was Sam who saved the day, not Dean. Of course the guest star chick just had to be gushing all over Dean and thanking him for saving her life when it was Sam who saved her, not Dean. Unless you count getting thrown across the room and into a wall saving somebody's life.
I'm loving Season 7! This episode was a normal kind of monster of the week thing, even with the conflict between Sam and Dean. I loved this episode though!
I loved the Ellen comment, but when they guy said Ellenore before Ellen, I thought he was talking about the vampire Lenore, and then I was confused.. LOL
Anyways, pretty average awesome episode of Supernatural.
Great episode! I'm glad to see the boys actually listen to each other. Dean was pretty honest about being sorry and I'm glad he didn't back down when Sam was being so hard headed. His reasoning was sound and I guess it took being called out on it to make him get past his initial anger and see the situation for what it was. If he hadn't known Amy, he would've killed her, too.
Good to see Dean sticking with Sam and waiting him out. With all the hints about something bigger going on with Dean, I interested to know what it is. Ellen sending a message to et someone know how bad it really is? What exactly did she mean. It was creepy to think someone could actually deliver that message, but how would the museum guide just pull the name Ellen out of thin air unless it was for real?
I miss the Impala, but it's good Dean happened to walk past the muscle car. He just doesn't look right in a hatchback. :) I did like Melanie. She was very believable and I liked her connection with Dean. He does go for the dark haired, down to earth beauties, huh? I did suspect they'd gotten the wrong sister, because how many times to spirits try to get you to listen to them before you torch them? They usually just try to stop you. So yeah, figured right then, since there were two of them, the younger actual psychic one was warning the victims about what the older one was going to do. Remember, they museum guy said she could see peoples deaths
Not much moved forward with the overall mythology, but it was nice to see a simple Monster of the week episode that let the brothers focus on their problems without getting in the way of the job. I'm glad we had a call back to everything that happened last week tho, it would be strange if they just went merrily on their way and nobody remembers seeing their faces on CNN.
All in all, a very solid episode. As for next week, how the hell does Sam get himself into a situation like that? Of course Dean doesn't buy it for one second. Can't wait!
I am actually stumped on what I think about this episode. I need to rewatch it while not tweeting and go into it with a much more open mind than the first viewing. I spent most of the episode thinking it was written by my least favorite writers and was pleasantly surprised that I recognized the main characters, but it still felt rather anvil heavy. I loved the one-liners except for the unfortunate throw back to season 1 Wincest jokes that should have died before they started. I thought the ending was great and hope this means that the nastiness of this week is behind us in the fandom. All in all, I need a thoroughly focused rewatch before I attempt to vote on this one.
Yep. That's an awful lot of hard liquor for someone his age. We used to pound beer. You'd never catch us with scotch or whiskey neat. Maybe shots of Everclear but no old guy drinks.
Oh he is? Really? Because I didn't even see any of Sam's anguish this season. Hell I haven't seen any of Sam's anguish since Dean died back and Season 3. They must've dealt with Sam's issues/anguish off-screen, because I'm certainly not seeing it!
When was that? When he was inflicting pain on himself to get rid of the hallucination of Lucifer? I can't remember. Wait... I think I know why I can't remember... because they've never actually shown Sam dealing with his issues... must've been an off-screen thing...
He was sitting and rocking because he couldn't handle the hallucinations and didn't want to "burden" anybody. That's what family's for. He had to get ratted out by a Horseman to be forced to deal with his instability.
Amazing episode tonight! I was really excited to see what the Ben's could do and they did not disappoint!! I loved this episode!! The writing and the look! Just brilliant!!
Most things on SPN are off screen. I would have liked for them to go into more depth with this as well, but for now it seems that Sam is fine and is coping.
^^; one weird thing was how one girl almost reconized them from last week's episode while the boys walked on 2 crime scene and the police didn't made the connection...I guess the police aren't searching for them cause they're 'dead', but still...they still saw her face many time and all
Sarah was one of the few PiP's who realized that she inadvertently caused someone's death and then tried to do something about it. She had integrity, confidence, and common sense. In short, she was as perfect as you can get before people start resenting you for it.
Great episode! All the classic Supernatural stuff I love (minus the Impala, but she'll be back) with some new twists to keep it fresh. Loved the town full of fake and real psychics, and Melanie was great!
This was a fabulous episode. What's not to like. Sam on the serious side. Dean being like we love him. It was wonderful. Dean telling Sam why he did what he did and walking off to give Sam the time to think was great. The ending was marvelous. Finally back to where they can actually start to communicate. Dean telling Sam he doesn't want to lie to him anymore. I pray the writers remember that this was done. This episode was done by new writers. I think they spent some time on older seasons. They certainly seem to know boys better then most of the people on the staff.
Practice on the salt lines. lol Not all dirt is clay. In some part of Texas, it's like that but in other areas, it's pure gumbo. What they were digging looked like bagged flower bed dirt. lol. In the past there was chunks.
I enjoyed the episode overall, but while I'm glad to see the boys together again I must admit I'm a little peeved that the resolution ended up being just another version of "gee, Dean, you're right, sorry" - maybe because I still don't think it was the right thing to do, killing Amy, and I was enjoying the fact that for once Sam got to be in the "righteously angry" role instead of Dean (who seems to be in those shoes far too often for my liking). I mean, Dean PUNCHES Sam when he's pissed at him, and Sam is finally standing his ground and saying "this wasn't okay, I'm angry" and then POOF - "it's okay Dean you were right and I was wrong". Half of last season was Dean getting pissed at Sam (soulless!Sam, granted, but still) for doing dickish things, and we had plenty of Dean being pissed at Sam for Ruby/his addiction/etc before that. I was enjoying having the shoe on the other foot for once, and it STILL somehow ended up with Sam backing off and apologizing.
It also bothered me that Dean was calling Sam a "bitch" just for being angry with him, especially considering Dean's track record with dealing with his own anger (punching Sam, as mentioned, beating up the Impala, drinking, going on monster killing sprees, etc). Sam was just being brusque with Dean, which I think he had a right to do, and Dean had to call him a bitch Dean's done far worse when pissed than give Sam the cold shoulder.
(NOT trying to start brother-war crap here, I swear - I LOVE Dean too. This is just a pet peeve of mine).
Other than that, though, it was a fun ep. At least I got one of my wishes - that Missouri would at least be MENTIONED. Can we PLEASE have her return for an ep? Maybe whack the boys with her spoon? :P
If that wasn't clay it had very low organic matter in it. I'd pay to see a 20 lb lump of clay with half a beer bottle in it come up on one of those shovels.
I totally loved this ep. Good old school, brother's working together and still irritating the hell out of each other Supernatural. I loved the end. A tiny moment of honesty between the two of them, something they've always struggled with. I loved how Dean, when saying what was going on, just couldn't quite look at Sam. So uncomfortable opening up. Jensen is a spectacular actor. And I really loved that they solved the case themselves, with no help from Bobby or Heaven or anyone. Back to basics. These guys are smart and know what they're doing. Hooray that finally we get to see them doing what they do best, using those brains and not relying on anyone but each other and their own smarts. The Ellen thing was just icing on the cake. She always took Dean to task and called him on his BS, I love that she's still taking care of him from beyond the grave. Love. A great outing from Blacker and Acker. I've been excited to see what they'd do, as I'm a huge fan of The Thrilling Adventure Hour. I loved their script. This and Slash Fiction were both beautifully written...and both by newbies. Brilliant.
Yep. We NEVER get to see the real long-term or intense Sam issues being dealt with on-screen, with the exception of the beginning of this season (which was terribly short-lived). Sam spends over a century in hell, Castiel makes proclamations about how utterly destroyed and raw and wounded his soul is, the wall comes crashing down, and a few eps later it's RIGHT back to regular ol' Sam and more focus on emo!Dean. I love Dean, but it seems like we get way more character exploration for him than we do Sam, and all of Sam's character growth is seen via Dean and revolves around how it affects Dean. I mean, we didn't even get ONE hospital scene with Sam - we've had multiple eps with Dean being treated in a hospital, and Sam actually GETS to an ER for once and we STILL only see Dean in the hospital. Sam goes from seizing-with-head-injury to fine and dandy in about ten seconds. I wouldn't care so much if that weren't the pattern ALL THE TIME. Seven seasons and not ONE hospital scene for Sam, despite Dean being in the hospital when he was electrocuted, after the accident with yellow eyes, after getting beaten up by Alastair, getting his leg broken, etc. It's really indicative of this tendency to show everything from DEAN'S point of view. We spent half of last season without the REAL Sam even ON the show, and I was hoping that at the very least we'd get some serious character exploration in the aftermath of that to make up for it, but nope. Apparently Sam's fractured psyche is just fine now and we're going to forget about it entirely (except for the occasional mention/guilt trip being thrown in his face) and it's on to Dean's big dark secret (MORE SECRETS?!) and messages from beyond the grave about how BAD it is for DEAN. The emo!Dean thing is really getting old! And somehow, despite Sam getting to be the one in the righteously angry role for once, we ended the ep with Sam basically saying "sorry, I was wrong and you were right, hey are you okay?" and just rolling over again. Considering the number of times Dean has played the role of righteously-pissed and morally superior brother, even punching Sam in the face multiple times and calling him less than human, it was nice to see Sam getting to be the pissed off one for once. And he didn't even punch Dean! But somehow it still ended up all being about DEAN and how troubled he is, despite the fact that HE lied to SAM and is the one who did wrong (though I know not everyone agrees with that conclusion).
I love Dean and I love Sam, and I don't mean any of this as a criticism of the character of Dean because it's really about the writers and how they're choosing to portray the story lines and neglect Sam's POV so consistently. I just really want them to back off of the whole "woe is me, poor me another drink" Dean angle. *sigh*
We will have to agree to disagree both on killing Amy, which I think was completely justified, and on Missouri, who is up there with Becky in most-annoying character for me. I think Sam still gets to wear the righteously angry hat because Dean lied to him and I love how Sam didn't let that go and in the end it is Dean who has to admit Sam is right. I feel like both brothers did some maturing in those brief minutes and that's one of the things I like best about this episode. For too long they both fell back on old habits, including the running away (Sam) and lying (Dean) that got them both in this mess in the first place. For them to actually tell it like it is was refreshing and I hope something the writers keep in mind for the next time they throw in a completely arbitrary plot point whose sole purpose is to cause friction between the brothers in such a contrived way the entire fandom revolts. Here's hoping for brothers combined and external conflicts for the remainder of the season.
It was awesome to see only the brothers working together to solve the case. I love Bobby as well as the next fan, in fact probably more than most, but it was good to have them doing all the old season 1 hunting activities. I love a good salt and burn.
See, it seemed to me that Sam DID just let that anger go. Maybe I need to rewatch, but it just seemed to disappear and fade right into "gee, sorry, hey are you okay?" to me. I also really didn't see Dean as having to admit that he was wrong - in fact SAM was the one who said "you were right", making a 180 on his earlier POV without any real evolution in between (though they never really SHOW Sam's POV on these things, so maybe there was and it was just off-screen). And I didn't see Dean as really admitting to any wrong-doing except for saying that he didn't like lying to Sam -he didn't even really say it was WRONG of him to do it (though maybe I missed that - I'm exhausted and on painkillers, recovering from surgery, so who knows LOL).
I also didn't see Sam as having "run away", but as having asked for and taken space from Dean. He didn't disappear in the night or leave with the intent of never coming back - he just said "I can't be around you right now, we need space from each other" and it was communicated and Dean agreed to it. I don't think that was immature or wrong, seeing as how they live SO closely to one another and when you're pissed at someone you don't want to be in their back pocket. It was expressed that it was temporary, and it wasn't done secretly etc. I did cringe when he asked for space though just because I KNEW that certain sects of anti-Sam fans (NOT talking about you here, for the record!) would jump on Sam for "running away again" (which they did before the ep even aired). It's perfectly healthy and reasonable to want to have time away from someone, no matter how much you love them, especially when you spend ALL your time together otherwise. So Sam taking space doesn't seem immature or wrong to me. (Sorry for the long-windedness, recovering from surgery and on lots of meds! LOL).
I too am tired which makes me a bit impatient and I hate brother wars, so let me just clarify when I said run away I meant when Sam left in the middle of the night to pursue Amy, leaving only a couple words on a note and ignoring Dean and Bobby's calls. I completely agree that Sam showed real maturity by telling Dean he needed space because Dean hurt him. I think he was dead right in this instance because staying together with such hard feelings would have been disastrous.
Ah. Yeah, I was peeved at the writers for that one because it seemed strange and out of character to me, and I think they could have figured out a way to get Sam on his own in a less jarring way. I hate brother wars, too - I tend to get peeved more at the writers than the actual characters (you know, since they're sadly NOT REAL lol).
Totally agree on a rewatch. I graded this one only great and with a rewatch it may go to awesome. I liked all of the brother stuff, the Ellen shout out, the PiP, and the season 1 feeling. Unfortunately for me, as much as I love season one, after 7 years it almost feels weird for me to go back to that simplistic formula.
just didn t like the melanie character, worrried this is a sg attempt to sneak in a lisa.2 and thinks people will be to stupid to notice, only that i liked lisa and couldn t stand this character. since she was in almost every scene -well don t think i ll rewatch it.i liked they made up though
I need to rewatch too, I think. I enjoyed it while it was on, but five hours later I'm sitting here thinking, ".....eh....." I like the Ellen reference, and I don't mind the new car, but overall the episode came off like a Season 1 MOTW thing. The brothers are too old and too experienced for that to play well anymore.
I really liked it. It felt like classic SPN. And I had an 'OMG I know them!' moment about the Fox sisters. :D Even if they forgot the third one (although I think she was just the organizer for their tours and stuff. Leah, I think her name was?) The end scene was really great. The boys forgave each other yay! The Ellen thing was awesome. And the girl fawning over Dean...heh, felt very season 1. It can't top Slash Fiction for me, but it was still great.
I'd love to see Lisa and Ben back; they were an indication Dean's not fifteen years old, that he's got some depth as a character. I don't see Melanie being written as well enough rounded to be anything more than helpless-chick-of-the-week.
Well, the reason the girl was so grateful to Dean was probably because he was the one she saw defending her. She didn't really see Sam burning the bones or having the confrontation with that guy...and it reminds me a bit of season one when all the girls were all over Dean.
She was all of what you said above as well as being courageous and embodying everything that Sam admired in a girl---- education, class and intelligence. The fact that she was beautiful was an extra :-)
Besides the fact that I loved this episode's original flavourness, I really liked the girl, she really felt like the old school female guest stars, she wasn't just a prop to move the story forward and give pathos to the guys, it was an intersection of their lives, that's a bit I had missed the last seasons.
I simply flat out loved this episode. It felt kind of relaxed and in the zone. It really felt like old school Supernatural. Loved the museum curator saying "Walking. Walking" in that tiny little place. And loved the message from Ellen. Liked the guest star/love interest. (actress and character) And a good old fashioned ghost. Bones in the bed. {{{yeash}}} There was just so much goodness for me in this ep.
My feeling is that it was one of the seeds to Deans bigger issues...why his drinking is getting worse. I don't think it's all shaken trust since what happened with Cas. Dean opened up to Sam a little but I don't think he said what Ellen was telling him to say.
and I love it when Dean told Sam that he felt guilty by lying to him but he didn't feel guilty at all by killing Amy. And he explained it really reasonable. He killed her because she was a monster and knows that Sam couldn't do it because she's his friend. That's why he did it. Good job, Dean!!!
but.. I think I saw Sam's puppy when Dean told him "you almost got us both killed". Awwww...
Clearly Slash Fiction would be a hard episode to come after but while it was an okay episode, something fell flat for me. I thought that the one confrontation scene was done brilliantly and then nothing? they're back together and everything's okay?!
You misunderstand me. I saw Dabb and Loflin's names in the beginning credits and thought they had written it. It confused me because I thought they wrote the next episode. Turns out they did write the next one but they didn't write this one. I spent a large part of the episode worried about how Dabb and Loflin were going to make everything worse by making the characters unrecognizable and was shocked when that happened. Of course, when I finally figured out they didn't write it, all became more clear. I have to rewatch it before I can grade it so I'm being fair to it.
I think I'm fine with the simplistic story but there is something off about the episode that I can't identify until I rewatch it. Or maybe I'll find i'm making the whole unease up in the rewatch.
I think the story had to be basic since the case was not the focal point. Getting Dean and Sam's relationship back on track was. My guess is they chose to highlight some season 1 nostalgia not only as a throwback bone for the audience but also to give it that starting over flavor.
They were doing their best to highlight sibling dysfunction in this episode that's for sure. That anvil dropping was one issue of have. I do wish they would part ways with all the Wincest allusions though. They make me very uncomfortable and quite frankly it's gotten really old. Time for a new shtick
They obviously did their homework. They could not have thrown in such a homage to season 1 without having watched those episodes shortly before crafting the script.
This is an excellent point I intended to address in my recap. No way the sheriff wasn't at least puzzled as to why the Feds looked so familiar, and I can't believe Lily Dale wasn't all over the traveling serial killer vibes.
They had to stash the Impala last episode because the LeviaBrothers were using a 67 Impala in their crime spree too. My guess is that it is still too fresh in people's memories so they are lying low, Impala-free. She is due to come back in the 10th episode I believe.
It's very likely that she will be a one-shot PiP. If they changed it so she had real psychic power then they might go there. Since she doesn't they have no need to consult with her and you know how Dean and Sam hate revisiting a town they have already been in,
Ah. I thought it was something like that after the exchange with the psychic about them just looking like the Winchesters, but I didn't watch the last epiose too closely I guess.
I always say to myself it's because they've been doing it their whole lives. They can make such nice looking holes and lines after 20+ years of practice. Makes sense, I guess.
I'd say: Just wait and be patient. I'm pretty sure they're gonna get back to Sam's storyline in a few episodes. Maybe there's this big BANG and Luci and his hallucinations are back...:)
I agree Sam showed maturity in telling Dean that he needed space. He knew the best way to deal with his anger was to get away from Dean for awhile because he knew that around Dean he wouldn't be allowed the luxury of experiencing his very justified emotions without condemnation from Dean. Look how long it took before Dean called Sam a bitch for still being angry. Sam wasn't even being nasty; just brusque. I get annoyed with Dean when he yells at Sam like that and annoyed with Sam because he just stands there and takes it.
agreed that was probably the one and only time we will see her, I didn't see anything to indicate she was anything more than a one episode wonder. What I did see was the probability of this being Dean getting his mojo back with the ladies. I expect a return of slutty Dean is on the cards.
personally I think if Sam can be fine and over his issues so quickly then I don't see why Dean cant be too, especially since Sam's issues make Dean's look a bit pathetic.
I dont want to get into a brothers war so all I'm going to say is the fact that Sam can seemingly overcome something so immense (or many things over the years really) says a lot about his strength. He gets up and gets on with the job and doesn't wallow. This season has highlighted what an incredible person Sam is.
This is one of those episodes that I know I will enjoy when re-watching more than when I was watching it air. I'm always so anxious to get back to the main storyline, that any filler drives me crazy! That being said, it was still a very enjoyable episode. I'm glad the show finally admitted that Dean's problems aren't solely because of Amy. Because Dean lost Ben, Lisa, and Cas, Sam went crazy, and they're fighting the toughest monster yet; so it seemed weird that Amy was supposed to be the only thing he was upset about.
The FBI announced they were dead on TV. I'm guessing like most people the cops and anyone seeing them have forgotten all about it. Think about it, you saw a murderer on tv then a few days later they say he's dead. Would you remember the face much longer?
I loved this episode. Last week's was definitely better, but this one had an old-school Supernatural vibe. It was them working a case, working closely with another person and eventually trying to save them, and there was even some cute brotherly stuff at the end
BRAVO! Couldn't agree more...except with the Missouri part, I love her and would love to see her back. But the rest...abso-freakin'-lutely!
Did it ever occur to anyone that as much as we all want a season 1/2 vibe back again...and thank God we're finally getting it...that BOTH guys have done a considerable amount of growing up since then and the way they handle this whole blow up reflected that?
I was annoyed by how last week's episode ended with Sam walking away but I understood why he did it and it was completely justified, as was his continuing anger this week. And apparantly, Dean has graduated beyond the punch him in the face gut reaction and realized that Sam had a right to his feelings too, which was reflected in how he handled Sam's reactions.
He was honest about why he did what he did and allowed Sam his perfectly justfied reaction. Sam thought about it ( and yeah, I think having to shoot the psychic guy probably helped put it into perspective) and came to see Dean's side of things too. Doesn't mean he liked being lied to but he came to understand it. For me the best part was Dean admitting that he didn't like lying to Sam...he obviously knew it was wrong and that was weighing on him, not killing Amy which he felt justified in doing. It's called talking out your issues and respecting the other side even if you don't agree with it, that's what mature people do, and both guys were doing it here and I applaud that BIG time. It's what I'd hoped they'd do last week but I guess the folks behind the scenes needed to drag it out a little more. I think it was well handled and there was no slight against either brother.
I'm also glad Dean opened up about the Cas thing too. No, I don't think that's all of what's bothering him but since when has mr. "no chick flick moments" ever been that willing to open up about his feelings?
And anyone who thinks Sam is just fine and dandy is kidding themselves. I seriously don't think we've seen the last of the hallucinations...Sam's got plenty to work through and no doubt we'll be seeing that too. And maybe part of his making up with Dean was not wanting to go through it alone? Just a thought.
Oh, and if you think Sam's troubles are always played out off screen, then go back and watch Seasons 2-4 and maybe you'll see differently. Let's face it, we've been privvy to both guys pain all along...no offense, but I think that statement was a bit of an over-reaction.
Awesome! Fantastic! Great! The boys have decided to forgive each other and move on. The show was just excellent from beginning to end! I am really enjoying this season so much.
I didn't see any but I only watched season 1 of The Mentalist. A fan of the show might have picked up on something I missed. Thee was nothing outright though.
It's only been 1.5 weeks so I don't think anyone would have forgotten their faces by now. In fact, if this happened for real, CNN would still be digging into the killers' background, pundits would still be talking about what happened and blaming someone for how the killers were raised, and People magazine would have their faces splashed on the cover of this week's issue. I know this isn't real, but the fact that only one person mentioned it is not plausible to me. Murderous killing spree from people who were already presumed to be dead once would be huge news for at least a month.
I agree that we have not seen the last of Sam's hellucinations. LeviaSam made that crystal clear last week. Sam's in for a big reckoning with his definition of fine and I think the writers will play it out big. I also disagree when people say all Sam's troubles play off screen. Yes, a lot of times we see things from Dean's point-of-view, but that doesn't mean that we haven't felt Sam's confusion, anger, pride, sorrow, remorse, etc. Much of the time it is Sam's feelings and issues that drive the plot.
i thought that was kinda stupid they killed the good witch ghost person but its fine. I just thought they could've spared a life. It was a good episode though and next week im a little surprised the groom is sam and i cant think of anyone who would be his wife! she has brown hair and caucasian thats all we know.
I agree in a way. But I also don't think it makes Dean look pathetic. he might not have been stuck in the cage for God knows how long but he had a pretty shitty year as well, and while I think they're overdoing the whole ordeal, for him to feel so bad for merely lying to Sam was really brotherly.
Just watched it. Overall, I liked the episode. It was well paced and felt like the older episodes. The ending didn't sit well with me. First of all, Sam shouldn't have apologized for getting mad at Dean. His opinion was just as valid, and Dean should have apologized for not acknowledging that Sam's opinion was just as valid. And why didn't Sam even get the chance to express his point of view? Dean's "I went with my gut" ignores the fact that Sam's gut was saying something different and Dean steamrolled right over Sam's judgment by killing Amy without Sam's knowledge. I would have been much more comfortable with a truce acknowledging that both points of view were valid, the lying and not communicating was wrong, but they shouldn't let this argument end their relationship. Was Dean's revelation that he's "climbing the walls" all that's coming for his growth arc? After drinking himself into a stupor for the past few seasons, I hope not. That guy needs some serious self-reflection, and admitting that the stress is getting to him, while a good first step, is only a first step.
We had the mandatory "We need to call Bobby so that he can tell us what to do" comment. Not sure whether the call actually took place or whether they figured it out on their own. It would be great if they figured out that they can solve some of these cases themselves, like they used to in the old days.
What was with Dean's "You almost got us killed" comment? Is he trying to make Sam feel guilty for having hallucinations?
The Ellen line was funny.
It felt like both Sam and Dean were written in character again. Yay for seeing smart Sam again!
Sam has feelings? And they're driving the plot? I'm sorry, but that's not even remotely true. When was the last time we really got to hear Sam express ANY feelings/emotions. Sam has issues? What issues? I thought he was all better and was "feeling pretty good." Dean on the other hand, is chock full of issues and feelings... constantly... and we ALWAYS hear about them...
The thing is, is that they're not telling Sam's story. The halucinations are a symptom of his experience. They're a gimmick, really. We still haven't heard Sam tell what he remembers. We don't know if he remembers everything, or if he's just getting flashes. I'd like to hear Sam describe the experience, tell his feelings about what happened, and say how much he remembers. If Adam was down there, I'd like Sam to talk about that and what happened to Adam. I'd like to hear Sam explain how it came to be that his soul became split from his body and how his body was able to walk and talk without a soul, if he has some insight into that. If not, I'd like to see him wondering about it. I'd like to know if he remembers Cas coming down to rescue him, what happened, and why Cas left without knowing that he didn't have the soul. I'd like to know if he tried using his powers since he went to hell and what happened.
Comparing this with a story of a different trauma - say a story of a woman being raped on a train - a typical story would be a description of the woman boarding the train and going through the experience, the after-effects and her healing process, some post-traumatic stress effects (maybe she's afraid to be near trains now), and then the story might go on to tell how she finds a new meaning in life with working with trauma victims, and how she was able to move forward.
If this same story was written by SPN writers in the style which they write for Sam, we would see the woman bording the train. The woman would go missing for a while. We'd be told that she was raped. And then we'd see her fear of trains and how that fear of trains was inconveniencing her co-workers who were trying to travel with her to business meetings. And that would be the end of the story. The story would become that of a woman who is terrified of trains.
overall, I really enjoyed the episode.. I love that Ellen was able to knock some sense into Dean, even from beyond the grave!
what completely shocked me, though, was how quickly the Amy drama was resolved.. yeah, I'm sure there'll be a bit of residual fallout, but really? so quickly? don't get me wrong, I'm glad to have the boys together again, but it doesn't seem like Sam put up too much of a fight.. I don't know how realistic that is, but then again, the Winchesters don't really deal with "realistic" very often.. so hey.. I won't complain.
How do you know it was the middle of the night? Dean was passed out in front of the TV, but with all of the alcohol and pills he was on, it could have been 2 in the afternoon. They had been holed up together in the cabin for three weeks at that time, and Sam felt like he was managing the hallucinations. He read about the murders, did what he had been trained to do since he was a child, and that is go out on a hunt and try to stop the murders. He did leave Dean a note that he was fine. I agree he should have called Dean back (I don't think we saw any evidence that Bobby was calling too), but he probably didn't because Dean was just yelling at that point. It was a childish reaction - like Sam trying to dodge John's calls in the flashbacks - but when a sibling is yelling and not talking, the reaction is understandable. Not wise, but understandable.
I rated it awesome as I did 'Meet The New Boss' and 'Slash Fiction'. The episode was very well written and acted out. I was laughing hysterically at the antics of the supposed psychics, something I don't usually do, even when I watch comedies. I instantly took a liking to Melanie; I particularly loved the conversation between Dean and her when she asked him if ghosts can feel the pain and when Dean went for a little Sam-ism saying probably, she gave a satisfied - and rather savage - "good". I'd like to see her again. But I guess that's out of the cards. The callbacks to previous seasons and characters - Missouri (S1), Pamela (S4-5) and Ellen (S2,3,5) - were also much appreciated. I've noticed that recently, they have taken to giving more shout-outs to previous seasons, which is cool really. Apart from the Impala noticeably absent, I enjoyed the episode and how the brothers reconciled at the end for I dreaded that the writers would drag the Amy storyline further on. It took the brothers seeing things from a different perspective - what with all the siblings reference in the episode - to understand why each of them did what they did. That's nice 'cause I won't have to wait with bated breath to cringe every time the brothers talk and bring up Amy again. Now I'm rather dreading next week's episode with Sam heading up the aisle! I hope it's not really till death do them part... or not! 'Cause this is Supernatural and the bride might well be ganked by the end of the episode! :P Let's wait and watch.
I assume it was night because the cabin was dark when Sam left. I guess it could have been an extremely cloudy afternoon, but odds are it was night. Sam's note said: ""Back in a few days. I'm fine. Sam" Given that just 3 weeks before he was waving a gun around and shooting at non-existent people, no one would call this note adequate. Even though Dean was in a cast, he still could have come along. He just wouldn't have been able to go on the actual hunt. Yes, he would have been a pain about it, but it would have been a far better solution than sneaking off. Bobby said he was calling in the episode but Sam wasn't answering him either and I doubt Bobby was yelling. The entire episode was a sloppy mess that regressed the characters instead of moving them forward. I put that blame solely on the writers. We could have been out of this mess a long time ago if they hadn't decided to turn the characters into teenagers again.
Absolutely true. Sam has had everything thrown at him from age 6 months:-
the demon blood,
the visions,
the fact that his own father told his brother to kill him if he couldn't save him,
the whole demon blood addiction /Ruby story,
having been told that he was the Devil's meatsuit, ( Dean was Michaels's, okay but if I had to choose who to have inside me, I wouldn't pick Lucifer),
having to undergo nearly 200 hell-years of torture while probably trying to protect Adam too, ( that has never been addressed),
getting yanked out of Hell witthout a soul, and because of that lack, not having moral principles to base his life on ,and so killing without remorse along with the Campbells, just to have that prey on his conscience when he does get his soul back,
Castiel, a once friend, pulls down his wall leaving him at the mercy of his terrible Hell experiences,
and to end it all he asks his brother to trust him, which he doesn't do and then lies to him for days,
plus the fact that Sam's phsychology has never really been explored in depth at all.
I have probably missed out a lot of other things, so I think Sam has bundles of issues that could be addressed by the writers.
I am in no way putting Dean down here because I love him as much as Sam and I know he has his own issues, but they do tend to take precedence over Sam's.for some reason known only to the writers.
That's for sure! But i was referring to the"old guy drinks" now i may not be a guy,but i am old enough to say older, not old. Ha,I guess one day you will also find out, lol. :)
It's weird because in this area everything we drink out of has a handle on it. We'd never see a guy Dean's age drinking from a rocks glass. The bartenders are both pretty and tough. They wouldn't allow it. HA!
Hmmm... my comment seems to have disappeared... Oh well. Suffice it to say that In liked this ep. I loved the shout out to Ellen, Missouri, Pamela. Always nice to see that the old characters still have a place in the boys' hearts. Ellen's message from the beyond was a nice touch (I mean in a town full of psychics, someone from the boys' past should reach out to them right?) and I'm glad she's still able to kick Dean in the ass. :)
I like Melanie. I thought she was a capable PiP. She focused on Dean because he was the one actually responding to her. (Sam was still in his snit-fit angry mode) I liked how she thanked him and didn't let him take the blame for Cammille's death. "You didn't bring the ghost here, so thank you for coming here and killing it." They rarely get thanked and it's nice to hear once in a while.
I liked the way they dealt with the whole Amy thing and finally put it to rest. Dean spent most of the ep trying to tiptoe around find a way to get past Sam's anger until he finally just confronted him face to face. Sam wanted him to talk, he got his wish. At least that was a catalyst for Sam to finally try to see things from his brother's perspective and remember that despite what he may think sometimes, Dean has always looked out for him. finally admitting that, if he hadn't known Amy, he probably would've killed her too was a turning point. Sam was entitled to his anger, but sometimes what is right isn't what you want. I liked his line about Dean's drinking and not sleeping hardly being the actions of someone who was sure they'd done the right thing, forcing Dean to admit it wasn't the killing, it was the lying to Sam that he'd felt guilty about.
Dean finally opened up a little, admitting his trust issues after Cas. I'm sure there's more to it, but that will come out eventually. Maybe having Sam back on the same page will help with Dean's own guilt about a few things. I'm sure Sam isn't as fine as he pretends (LeviaSam gave us a hint about Satanvision!) so I'm guessing next week has something to do with his psychological reactions to everything. I'm having a hard time believing either Winchester could sincerely want to get married, considering how every relationship they've ever had have been such epic failures.
All in all, a nice, simple Monster of the week, ep that gave the boys a chance to clear the air and remember that they are all they have left and that family is important, even if you don't agree with their choices. I'm looking forward to them moving forward and kicking some Levia-butt from here on in!
LOL,handles are good....It seems that when you come on the site,i'm getting off.I should be back some where between 6 or 7. I find you later.Happy viewing!
Sam didn't know Cas brought him back until Cas told him that. He didn't remember that part. When Dean was brought back, he didn't know how it happened either.
Could we have learned a little more about what Sam went through in hell? Maybe so. But when Dean came back he was pretty adamant about not wanting to describe what he'd been through. He said there were no words that could do it justice. If that was true for his experience, then it certainly must be true for Sam's.
I'm sorry, but we've seen Sam's problems spelled out all over the screen since Season One. Sam's the one who wears his heart on his sleeve so whatever he's going through we experience it with him. Dean was the "no chick flick" guy up until the last few seasons. His inner angst remained just that, inner...until he let it out by bashing on the Impala or being forced into a dreaded chick flick moment by Sam.
To say that Sam is overlooked while Dean is fawned over is a little bit of an over-reaction, imo. I thought this scene, in fact the whole episode, was handled beautifully. BOTH characters showed emotional growth, BOTH were able to recognize and respect the feelings and motivations of the other. I don't know how you could ask for much more.
Couldn't agree more...I thought the whole thing was handled VERY well, giving plenty of respect to both brothers and spelling out both sides. Yes, there is more to come...that's life, nothing is sewed up tidily in an hour...but I at least feel like the brothers are on the same page again, or at least understand where each other is coming from, and can move on from there TOGETHER, the way it should be!
Dean did get a chance to describe his Hell experience when he told Sam about becoming a torturer. We learned more about it when we met Alistair and saw their interactions while Dean tortured Alistair. It's been 29 episodes since Swan Song and we still haven't heard about Sam's experience from his own words.
Not sure what you mean about not experiencing Dean's inner angst until the last few seasons. We saw a lot from Dean about his fear of losing his family in the first two seasons. There was him grieving his father, his soliloquy after Sam's death, his childhood flashbacks, WIAWSNB. In season 3 we had a lot on Dean's pact with the demon. He got to face the fear of hell in the dream episode. In season 4, we got the Hell discussions, Alistair, and the scenes with broken Dean and Cas in the hospital about his purpose. And so on...
I completly agree with you. I want to see more of Sam story, i love Dean just as much, but come on, is always about him! Sam has gone through so much and we barely see his pov.
And with all due respect, I think you're being a little unrealistic about wanting all the details of Sam's experience. We only found out details of Dean's because Alistair showed up. Yes, he mentioned having tortured people...he didn't go into it in depth, giving us every detail of every moment and telling us everything he saw and did, which is what you're suggesting we need from Sam.
Personally, I don't think reliving every second of the experience is going to do Sam much good. He's having hallucinations as it is. Yes, I'd like to see a little "I've been there, I understand, you can let it out to me" from Dean...which he tried to do when he first found Sam was back but Sam didn't have his soul and so he couldn't do it then. But with the hallucinations and all, it could be that Sam isn't capable of sharing in that much detail right now.
That's why I liked the way they did things in this episode...each recoginzing the others side and acknowledging it and coming to an understanding so they can proceed as a united front from here on in. Maybe I'm jaded, but I don't see anything wrong with that and I REALLY don't think there's been as huge a bias toward Dean and away from Sam as some here do.
Actually, we found out details when Dean spilled about it on the side of the road at the end of Heaven and Hell. We just got more details when Alistair showed up in ep 16, On the Head of a Pin which was AFTER Heaven and Hell. We've gotten next to nothing for Sam yet this season. So how chris is being "unrealistic" is beyond me.
Why the hell, is always Sam who apologizes in the end? I think he had every reasons to be angry, and i understand Dean pov but it doesn't mean he was right or that it was fine to lie to Sam. I love that the brothers are together again, but shouldn't have been Sam to give up, or at least not this easily. I wanna see more of Sam story this season, he has been through so much, when will they gonna show us what he feels, what he thinks? He seems to just accept things, i mean what does he think about what he did when he was without a soul? What does he think about what Cas did to him? What does he think about been the Devil's meatsuit? He was tortured in hell for years, he broke the damn wall, and he is just fine? Yeah, he has hallucinations, but in the past 2 or 3 weeks he seems to not have them anymore. So it was so easy to overcome what he suffered in hell? So many warnings from Dead and nothing? (I know the season is not over yet, theres still hope) For the first time we had a angry Sam, we saw how he felt, he felt hurt for what Dean did, and he was right, but everything was just ignored and in one episode everything was forgiven. We already saw numerous times Dean angry, punching Sam, screaming at Sam, at least this time i was hoping to see Sam punching Deam (just like Dean did when Sam stole his car). I still loved this episode, and it brought memories from the first 2 seasons. So far i really like this season.
(I'm sorry for any mistake, i'm portuguese and my english isn't perfect ): )
When did I say I wanted every detail of every moment? I just listed some pretty big plot holes and said I wanted to hear Sam's perspective on his experience. I don't know why it would be so hard to tell both Sam and Dean's stories in parallel, the way they used to in the early seasons.
Why it's always Sam who apologizes? Because that's who he is. Isn't emotionally constipated like Dean. If he waited for Dean to speak up, they would never talk. Dean's what John made him. Sam has always been much more free with his emotions. By now he knows he has to make the first step with Dean. Only because of that can they meet in the middle.
That's crap (not aimed at you, but at the show). Season 1 Sam was in touch with his feelings, but he didn't always defer to Dean and John. Quite the opposite actually.
You are comparing S7 Sam to S1 Sam? As I said, BY NOW Sam knows. S1 Sam wanted to get way way away and he behaved accordingly, he knew he wouldn't be sticking with Dean and John and he didn't care much about what Dean or John wanted. S7 Sam wants to be a hunter and stick with Dean, he's willing to "work" on the relationship he has with Dean and not burn bridges. Apples and oranges.
Ok, a more recent example is early season 4 Sam (before the addiction took over). Sam could have stuck to his guns about Amy without burning bridges. They could have agreed to disagree but continue to hunt together.
You said you wanted Sam to describe the experience, share his feelings about it, tell what he remembered about Adam and about having been brought back by Cas and what it was like to have a soul. That's a heck of a lot of detail to go into...a WHOLE lot more than Dean did. He simply said he tortured people to get off the rack and was ashamed of himself because he enjoyed it. Period...end of description. Alistair showed up and made him relive it more.
I really don't think it's necessary to go into all of that. We know what it was like for Sam without a soul because we saw it. We can assume Hell wasn't a walk in the park, and we're seeing the remnants of that in the hallucinations.
I admit I would like Sam to just admit how much it's tearing him up and lean on Dean a bit but Dean's not the only one who has changed in the last couple of seasons...as he became a more emotional character, Sam gained a new strength and that's manifesting itself in his trying to deal with his issues on his own. I see that as a good thing...both have matured and I think last night's episode showed us that perhaps they've come to, or are coming to, the point where they can relate to each other on a new level, which is a healthy thing.
Again, I don't feel that one brother has been overshadowed to the expense of another and I CERTAINLY didn't see that last night!
Sam's hell experience and post hell repercussions (soullessness and hallucinations) has really been Sam's only storyline for both seasons 6 and 7. Dean's hell storyline had to share time in season 4 with his destiny told to him by the angels to save the world from the apocalypse. They can find time to fill in more of the holes in Sam's story.
We have a pretty detailed account of how Dean's hell time was spent. For the first 30 years every day he was tortured on the rack (cut up until there was nothing left) and given the choice to get off and start torturing. For the last 10 years he was Alistair's apprentice and did the torturing himself. We've seen how this has affected him. We don't have any of that kind of detail with Sam. A lot of this detail could be filled on with just a couple of scenes, but I'm getting the feeling you don't want to give him even that.
Signing off now because this is starting to turn into one of those brother fights that I try to avoid.
Dean's storyline had to be told in some detail because it was germane to the overall Apocalypse story...it was the breaking of the first seal.
I don't think an overdue amount of time was spent on it. And the last thing I want to get into is a "brother fight" because frankly I don't buy into that crap.
I just felt the need to point up that this episode was done REALLY well and to disagree with the people who felt Sam was somehow trvialized or overlooked.
I think his storyline has been handled fine and I don't think we've seen the last of it yet. More will be told in time. I just don't buy into the argument that one brother has been overshadowed by the other...sorry, not true.
Currently yes, but I am secretly campaigning for Bruce or Wilson to take over that spot. Bruce watches more TV than I do by far and it's always fun to read his comments. You can tell he has watched, read, viewed everything he comments on instead of just commenting. Wilson was one of the first people I chatted with when I started SPTV a little over 1 year ago. I find him insightful, funny, and I always know I can find a good conversation with him in the mix. Not to say that there aren't other people I highly enjoy discussing with. There are tons. (Love everything you write Jilly!) It's just these 2 are so close to the top spot. With my new job, I really miss having good in-depth conversations with my SpoilerTV friends and can't wait for vacation so I can get more into the mix again.
I've now rewatched the episode and certain scenes over and over again. I give it a great for a Supernatural episode and definitely awesome in comparison with the rest of TV. I felt this episode did what I most wanted it to do - show the brothers taking steps toward maturity and bringing them together again in a more solid, if not still bumpy, relationship. I did feel like I was dodging anvils through big sections of the story but I liked the pacing and the callback to simpler times soothed something in me as a fan. In the end, I am pleased with how it ended up and how beyond hope that next episode with not chuck the new found maturity and willingness to attempt to talk the brothers have now established.
They didn't realize she was good when they killed her. They thought she was the one who was killing off the people. It was only after Melanie's friend was killed did they realize it was the ghost sister who was actually doing the killing.
Well, I'll be... :) I'm trying to keep up in the # of comments but I just can't. O.o Lately it seems like I either have something school-related to work on, or I'm at work, or I'm falling in love all over again with Mass Effect 2. (I'm such a nerd, I know!) But maybe eventually I will be able to step up my game. As of now I have 2 people between myself and you, and I'd bet they are more likely to climb the ranks than I am. lol
That would have been a mess to try and incorporate into this episode. Might have been better served with a "cool-down" episode to develop the Levis a little more and help the fellas regroup. And possibly add a dash more Crowley.
loved it. apart from those few moments when they were really obviously annoyed with each other, this episode took me back to old times where we hunted scary monsters. this new car is depressing me though, i want the baby back!!! and that moment were the ghost was at the window was actually terrifying! when was the last time a salt circle has actually worked throughout an entire episode? i liked modern psycic girl and how they completely threw all those fake psychics and their crap under the bus. was any one else really annoyed all episode by sam's annoying sideburns!?!?!
I love my boys and I am thrilled with the direction of the writers to get this show back to it's beginning. What I mean is Sam and Dean on the road hunting, eating, researching, talking, laughing and working together. They are brothers and have been through Hell literally and their bond is fierce. I cringe when they are not on speaking terms...........please SPN writers and PTB keep them together and keep them hunting.......Friday night hunts rule.............keep it spectacular funny scary and witty and let the soap opera drama stay on on daytime tv where it belongs. I love Supernatural and I love the brothers....and uncle Bobby too...and also Baby!!!!! "Carry On My Wayward Son"......................there is hunting to be done!
It was going to be tough to follow the last ep but this one was brilliant as well. I'm glad that the Amy thing is out in the open and that the brothers had a talk (although Dean needs to do a little bit more talking). Loved that Ellen reached out to Dean - only Ellen could give Dean a talking-to from the spirit world. Overall a great episode with some great lines - the waiter at the restaurant, woo-woo crap, Russian ogres - loved it.
Agreed, sometimes it just takes someone to be the bigger man and that is what happened here. Sam had to be the bigger man, see past all his own issues and get Dean to talk so to understand where Dean was coming from. Sam has sort of had to overcome all his own shit this season so he can be there for Dean, its just who Sam is.
and I definitely agree the writers are overplaying Dean's issues. His Catholic guilt is becoming tiresome, sometimes I want to tell him strap on a pair and deal already but I guess then he wouldn't be Dean would he? Imagine how much better he could feel if he just stopped playing the martyr?
loved this eposide . I loved the twist that the *evil* sister was in fact good and trying to warn them . This felt like an old eposide like something they would do in season 1-3 which i missed :( . Loved actaully Dean and Sam falling out because it was qite werid when Dean was trying to talk to Sam and Sam was soooo angry with every right .Loved the end though feel as though Dean is keeping something.......mmmm douno just got a feeling . I am so glad that the writers are back on track with this i was hating my fav show last year and i never want to again , i am loveing this season so far think it might fall in 3rd place with my fav's season's . I have a feelig that Cas will be back plus i was at a supernatural con and Misha kindy did not say no he just smiled *stars in my eyes* sorry just cant get overy how such a lovely guy he is and i got to cuddel him and death and chuck cant wait for may !!!!!!!!!!!. Anyway's i also liked that they have never actuallyu done an eposide like this before but it still felt fresh . I know alot of people are saying Dean got all the credit for saying her life but i think he was just more gentaler and recepected her feelings cause Sam was to angry he was helping by all means but he was way! angry even she could feel it , plus maby she liked Dean better so what ! lol i like Dean better but if someone thanks Sam or flirts with him i am not raging. Here's my only tiny issues is that i felt like Dean should have said sorry but he was right Sam would have done the same if she was not his friend at the end of the day , just felt that Sam was owed that at least maby Dean will start crying like usual lol and drink beer with Sam and start talking to him about whatever he is hiding and maby he'll say sorry then . I wonderer where this season will head but by the titles for the next few it sounds cool .
I really liked the episode, like many of you already said, it felt like the old Supernatural. I missed ghost hunts so badly in season 6 that right know I welcome any of them with my arms wide open. And I liked the physic town and the episode's overall storyline. I voted "great" cause it might have not been mind blowing, but it was a strong, entertaining episode. I guess the feel of the "good, old times" was its biggest advantage for me. Definitely loving season 7 so far!
Oh, and I'm SOOO glad the Amy crap is over. It was the one thing about this season I really disliked.
And, after watching the promo and the sneak peek for this week's episode, I have a feeling we're getting another great one on Friday ;) Can't wait!!!
This was a decent, old school Supernatural episode.
The only part I didn't like was the way-too-easy resolution to the brothers' issues. Sam was too conciliatory, Dean wasn't conciliatory enough, and the whole thing felt rushed and unearned. Then again, I haven't been too impressed with this season up to this point so I shouldn't be surprised.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
I loved everything about this episode! Again! Loving this season.
ReplyDeleteKnew the break up wouldn't last long. The end scene was adorable! lkajdlfkjasdlfkjasdflkj
Ellen mention, so yay!
Of course it wasn't like Slash Fiction...but it was still good :) I'm glad the boys are back together and seem ok at the end
ReplyDeleteOk- Episode. A little bit confusing...
ReplyDeleteNow stop being a bitch
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed this ep so hard!
Pretty cool episodes so far!! :D
I enjoyed the episode. I am glad Dean told Sam how he felt and I loved the Ellen reference. That was too good.
ReplyDeleteYESSS!!!!
ReplyDeleteWe're two for two...two excellent episodes in a row with classic Supernatural vibes!
"You affirmate me again and I'll punch you in the face!"
Then I was cringing waiting for the last five minutes wondering if they were going to punch us in the gut again, but MAN was that worth the wait!
ReplyDeleteOk. I'll go take my meds now.
Loved the car choice.
How does Dean make such pretty salt lines?
The Ellen reference was a tad creepy. Wonder if that is something the writers can build upon?
ReplyDeleteI loved it. It felt like old time Supernatural. It had the gruesome deaths, I mean a guy got forked to death! :) And it had the spook factor, as well as the interplay between the brothers.
ReplyDeleteThere were a LOT of subtle messages in this episode too.
10 out of 10 for me. Old time Supernatural.
LOL I thought the same thing! They always dig perfectly rectangular graves with clean edges. If they ever quit hunting they could get jobs as grave diggers. :)
ReplyDeleteGood point on the salt lines too...always absolutely perfect. Wouldn't his hand be shaking just a TAD?
ReplyDeleteLOL! The things we pick up on!
it would have been better if they metioned cas more or he showed up
ReplyDeleteBUT THE ELLEN THING WAS AWSOME!! TOTALLLYYY SOMEHING SHE WOULD SAY!
KICK YOUR ASS FROM THE BEYOND!! LOL!! x3 :D
Still miss Cas... :(
I think it would have been better with Cas, or they could have at least mentioned him more.
ReplyDeleteBUT THE ELLEN THING WAS AWSOME!!!!! TOTALLY SOMETHING SHE WOULD SAY!!!
KICK YOUR ASS FROM THE BEYOND!!! LOL! X3 ;D
Still Miss Cas....
ReplyDeleteThe promo made it seem like a dream type environment...can't wait.
ReplyDeleteLoved the ep, Loved the Ellen ref and possibly a member of the Campbell family and his partner.
ReplyDeletebut did I miss something or does anyone have any clue WHERE IS THE IMPALA?
I am happy with the ep too that god they are back together and I do miss the car. It was a good ep but next week HELL YES! that will be a AWESOME! ep so cant wait.
ReplyDeleteI loved the episode - good, traditional Supernatural MoTW.
ReplyDeleteBest of all the boys are back on track. Together.
Now all we need is the Impala back and we can get on with kicking leviathan butt.
It was put on ice when they were wanted last week. I'm guessing it will be back soon
ReplyDeleteAnd where do they get those steel cans of salt? They look like old gasoline cans. Never saw those in any feed store around here.
ReplyDeleteNothing wrong with knowing your soils!
ReplyDeleteWow, I was surprised by how much I enjoyed this episode! :)
ReplyDeleteI saw the same thing. I said "I swear they reuse that can all the time. They must pick up all the salt before they leave and recycle it on the next case or something..."
ReplyDeleteWow, it's like you read my mind or something.
ReplyDelete...Get it? Psychic joke relating to the fact that I agree with you 100%?
...No? Ok.
This was an actually well-implemented "back to basics" episode...And yet it was placed well in the world of season 7, and dealt with lasting issues like the Levia-Brothers, and settled the whole Amy thing. great great great episode.
ReplyDeleteLol! I actually didn't at first...I'm attributing that to the fact that it's very late where I am and my brain isn't exactly firing on all cylinders. :D
ReplyDeleteNice to see that one again Sam was made a prop for Dean's emotions/thoughts/feelings/story.
ReplyDeleteDrinky Dean has been missing for two weeks now. What's up with that?
ReplyDeleteHippie diner must have been out of organic wine.
Your brain has CYLINDERS!? Wow. [/Literal]
ReplyDeleteI'm loving Season 7! This episode was a normal kind of monster of the week thing, even with the conflict between Sam and Dean. I loved this episode though!
ReplyDeleteI loved the Ellen comment, but when they guy said Ellenore before Ellen, I thought he was talking about the vampire Lenore, and then I was confused.. LOL
Anyways, pretty average awesome episode of Supernatural.
If anyone was wondering why the actress that played Melanie looked familiar it's because she plays Elijah Wood's sister on Wilfred
ReplyDeleteSammy's dealt with his issues. Dean hasn't. There be differences ma'am.
ReplyDeleteOMG she's such a hardass on that show. Didn't even recognize her here as the PiP.
ReplyDeleteYup, four of them, ~240 horsepower. Currently I'm operating at about half the optimum power. Shutting down to recharge. *zzzzzzzzz*
ReplyDeleteGreat episode!
ReplyDeleteGood to see Dean sticking with Sam and waiting him out.
ReplyDeleteThis was Awesome... one of the best MOTW i've seen!! the two ben really got their mojo.... want moreee!!
ReplyDeleteThink of the girl thing as a flip on Provenance. In that one Dean saved the day, but Sarah was all over thanking Sam. Man I miss Sarah.
ReplyDeleteSam's done with his anguish. Dean has been carrying the load for way too long and the cracks are starting to show.
ReplyDeleteSam gets all the breaks.
Agreed.
ReplyDeleteI hope that after the NotImpala confessions Dean feels better and doesn't need to drown his sorrows. Here's to a functional, non-alcholic Dean.
ReplyDeleteYep. That's an awful lot of hard liquor for someone his age. We used to pound beer. You'd never catch us with scotch or whiskey neat. Maybe shots of Everclear but no old guy drinks.
ReplyDeleteOh he is? Really? Because I didn't even see any of Sam's anguish this season. Hell I haven't seen any of Sam's anguish since Dean died back and Season 3. They must've dealt with Sam's issues/anguish off-screen, because I'm certainly not seeing it!
ReplyDeleteWhen was that? When he was inflicting pain on himself to get rid of the hallucination of Lucifer? I can't remember. Wait... I think I know why I can't remember... because they've never actually shown Sam dealing with his issues... must've been an off-screen thing...
ReplyDeleteHe was sitting and rocking because he couldn't handle the hallucinations and didn't want to "burden" anybody. That's what family's for. He had to get ratted out by a Horseman to be forced to deal with his instability.
ReplyDeleteAnd it better have the new rims or I will be sorely disappointed.
ReplyDeleteAmazing episode tonight! I
ReplyDeletewas really excited to see what the Ben's could do and they did not
disappoint!! I loved this episode!! The writing and the look! Just brilliant!!
Most things on SPN are off screen.
ReplyDeleteI would have liked for them to go into more depth with this as well, but for now it seems that Sam is fine and is coping.
Maybe Sammy is marrying Sarah? :D
ReplyDelete^^; one weird thing was how one girl almost reconized them from last week's episode while the boys walked on 2 crime scene and the police didn't made the connection...I guess the police aren't searching for them cause they're 'dead', but still...they still saw her face many time and all
ReplyDeleteIf that's the surprise then I take back every terrible thing I have said about Dabb and Loflin. Sarah reappearance is a wish 7 years in the making.
ReplyDeleteShe did get elbows deep in it, didn't she?
ReplyDeleteSarah was one of the few PiP's who realized that she inadvertently caused someone's death and then tried to do something about it. She had integrity, confidence, and common sense. In short, she was as perfect as you can get before people start resenting you for it.
ReplyDeleteAnd she even forced Dean into a wait by the car moment.
ReplyDeleteGreat episode! All the classic Supernatural stuff I love (minus the Impala, but she'll be back) with some new twists to keep it fresh. Loved the town full of fake and real psychics, and Melanie was great!
ReplyDeleteThis was a fabulous episode.
ReplyDeletePractice on the salt lines. lol Not all dirt is clay. In some part of Texas, it's like that but in other areas, it's pure gumbo. What they were digging looked like bagged flower bed dirt. lol. In the past there was chunks.
ReplyDeleteMaybe they buy the salt in bags or something and pour it in the can.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed the episode overall, but while I'm glad to see the boys together again I must admit I'm a little peeved that the resolution ended up being just another version of "gee, Dean, you're right, sorry" - maybe because I still don't think it was the right thing to do, killing Amy, and I was enjoying the fact that for once Sam got to be in the "righteously angry" role instead of Dean (who seems to be in those shoes far too often for my liking).
ReplyDeleteIt also bothered me that Dean was calling Sam a "bitch" just for being angry with him, especially considering Dean's track record with dealing with his own anger (punching Sam, as mentioned, beating up the Impala, drinking, going on monster killing sprees, etc).
I will be highly impressed if they took time out of being dead and getting out of Dodge to go get the rims.
ReplyDeleteIf that wasn't clay it had very low organic matter in it. I'd pay to see a 20 lb lump of clay with half a beer bottle in it come up on one of those shovels.
ReplyDeleteI totally loved this ep. Brilliant.
ReplyDeleteMe too. But Dean said they were nice. Maybe they sent Bobby for them since they weren't busy calling him a half-dozen times for answers.
ReplyDeleteYep.
ReplyDeleteI love Dean and I love Sam, and I don't mean any of this as a criticism of the character of Dean because it's really about the writers and how they're choosing to portray the story lines and neglect Sam's POV so consistently.
ReplyDeleteIt was awesome to see only the brothers working together to solve the case. I love Bobby as well as the next fan, in fact probably more than most, but it was good to have them doing all the old season 1 hunting activities. I love a good salt and burn.
ReplyDeleteSee, it seemed to me that Sam DID just let that anger go.
ReplyDeleteI also didn't see Sam as having "run away", but as having asked for and taken space from Dean.
ReplyDeleteAh.
ReplyDeleteCan someone explain the car to me? Did I miss something happening to the Impala?
ReplyDeleteTotally agree on a rewatch.
ReplyDeleteGood episode, very predictable though. Still, much better than episodes 3-5, but not as good as the first two or Slash Fiction, very average.
ReplyDeletejust didn t like the melanie character, worrried this is a sg attempt to sneak in a lisa.2 and thinks people will be to stupid to notice, only that i liked lisa and couldn t stand this character. since she was in almost every scene -well don t think i ll rewatch it.i liked they made up though
ReplyDeleteI need to rewatch too, I think. I enjoyed it while it was on, but five hours later I'm sitting here thinking, ".....eh....." I like the Ellen reference, and I don't mind the new car, but overall the episode came off like a Season 1 MOTW thing. The brothers are too old and too experienced for that to play well anymore.
ReplyDeleteYour least favorite writers ? That was Acker's and Blacker's first script ever lol
ReplyDeleteI really liked it.
ReplyDeleteI'd love to see Lisa and Ben back; they were an indication Dean's not fifteen years old, that he's got some depth as a character. I don't see Melanie being written as well enough rounded to be anything more than helpless-chick-of-the-week.
ReplyDeleteWell, the reason the girl was so grateful to Dean was probably because he was the one she saw defending her. She didn't really see Sam burning the bones or having the confrontation with that guy...and it reminds me a bit of season one when all the girls were all over Dean.
ReplyDeleteYes, she was my favourite for Sam too.
ReplyDeleteShe was all of what you said above as well as being courageous and embodying everything that Sam admired in a girl---- education, class and intelligence.
The fact that she was beautiful was an extra :-)
Don't ask me why but I thought that the Wincest joke fathomed that Sam and Dean will part ways at the end of the show.
ReplyDeleteBesides the fact that I loved this episode's original flavourness, I really liked the girl, she really felt like the old school female guest stars, she wasn't just a prop to move the story forward and give pathos to the guys, it was an intersection of their lives, that's a bit I had missed the last seasons.
ReplyDeleteI simply flat out loved this episode.
ReplyDeleteLOL Plus it helps that some PA does most of the digging. :-D
ReplyDeleteMy feeling is that it was one of the seeds to Deans bigger issues...why his drinking is getting worse. I don't think it's all shaken trust since what happened with Cas. Dean opened up to Sam a little but I don't think he said what Ellen was telling him to say.
ReplyDeleteOMG! Salt and burn, Classic SPN!!!!
ReplyDeleteand I love it when Dean told Sam that he felt guilty by lying to him but he didn't feel guilty at all by killing Amy. And he explained it really reasonable. He killed her because she was a monster and knows that Sam couldn't do it because she's his friend. That's why he did it. Good job, Dean!!!
but.. I think I saw Sam's puppy when Dean told him "you almost got us both killed". Awwww...
like a welcome back present. :-)
ReplyDeleteClearly Slash Fiction would be a hard episode to come after but while it was an okay episode, something fell flat for me. I thought that the one confrontation scene was done brilliantly and then nothing? they're back together and everything's okay?!
ReplyDeleteYou misunderstand me.
ReplyDeleteI think I'm fine with the simplistic story but there is something off about the episode that I can't identify until I rewatch it. Or maybe I'll find i'm making the whole unease up in the rewatch.
ReplyDeleteI think the story had to be basic since the case was not the focal point. Getting Dean and Sam's relationship back on track was. My guess is they chose to highlight some season 1 nostalgia not only as a throwback bone for the audience but also to give it that starting over flavor.
ReplyDeleteThey were doing their best to highlight sibling dysfunction in this episode that's for sure. That anvil dropping was one issue of have. I do wish they would part ways with all the Wincest allusions though. They make me very uncomfortable and quite frankly it's gotten really old. Time for a new shtick
ReplyDeleteThey obviously did their homework. They could not have thrown in such a homage to season 1 without having watched those episodes shortly before crafting the script.
ReplyDeleteThis is an excellent point I intended to address in my recap. No way the sheriff wasn't at least puzzled as to why the Feds looked so familiar, and I can't believe Lily Dale wasn't all over the traveling serial killer vibes.
ReplyDeleteThey had to stash the Impala last episode because the LeviaBrothers were using a 67 Impala in their crime spree too. My guess is that it is still too fresh in people's memories so they are lying low, Impala-free. She is due to come back in the 10th episode I believe.
ReplyDeleteIt's very likely that she will be a one-shot PiP. If they changed it so she had real psychic power then they might go there. Since she doesn't they have no need to consult with her and you know how Dean and Sam hate revisiting a town they have already been in,
ReplyDeleteAh. I thought it was something like that after the exchange with the psychic about them just looking like the Winchesters, but I didn't watch the last epiose too closely I guess.
ReplyDeleteI always say to myself it's because they've been doing it their whole lives. They can make such nice looking holes and lines after 20+ years of practice. Makes sense, I guess.
ReplyDeleteI'd say: Just wait and be patient. I'm pretty sure they're gonna get back to Sam's storyline in a few episodes. Maybe there's this big BANG and Luci and his hallucinations are back...:)
ReplyDeleteI agree Sam showed maturity in
ReplyDeletetelling Dean that he needed space. He knew the best way to deal with his anger
was to get away from Dean for awhile because he knew that around Dean he
wouldn't be allowed the luxury of experiencing his very justified emotions without condemnation
from Dean. Look how long it took before Dean called Sam a bitch for still being
angry. Sam wasn't even being nasty; just brusque. I get annoyed with Dean when
he yells at Sam like that and annoyed with Sam because he just stands there and
takes it.
Sorry, but that's hardly anguish. And he wasn't sitting and rocking because he couldn't handle his hallucinations. Go back and watch the episode.
ReplyDeleteagreed that was probably the one and only time we will see her, I didn't see anything to indicate she was anything more than a one episode wonder. What I did see was the probability of this being Dean getting his mojo back with the ladies. I expect a return of slutty Dean is on the cards.
ReplyDeletepersonally I think if Sam can be fine and over his issues so quickly then I don't see why Dean cant be too, especially since Sam's issues make Dean's look a bit pathetic.
ReplyDeleteI dont want to get into a brothers war so all I'm going to say is the fact that Sam can seemingly overcome something so immense (or many things over the years really) says a lot about his strength. He gets up and gets on with the job and doesn't wallow. This season has highlighted what an incredible person Sam is.
After rewatching today, this epsiode deserves an upgrade. Obviously, I wasn't in the position to do that at 3 am :)
ReplyDeleteAwesome Ep! Loved everything about it.
ReplyDelete:P It's during time like this that my boyfriend is saying ''S.U.I.M.'' => 'Shut Up It's Magic''
ReplyDeleteAWESOME !!
ReplyDeleteThe FBI announced they were dead on TV. I'm guessing like most people the cops and anyone seeing them have forgotten all about it. Think about it, you saw a murderer on tv then a few days later they say he's dead. Would you remember the face much longer?
ReplyDeleteI loved this episode. Last week's was definitely better, but this one had an old-school Supernatural vibe. It was them working a case, working closely with another person and eventually trying to save them, and there was even some cute brotherly stuff at the end
ReplyDeleteBRAVO! Couldn't agree more...except with the Missouri part, I love her and would love to see her back. But the rest...abso-freakin'-lutely!
ReplyDeleteDid it ever occur to anyone that as much as we all want a season 1/2 vibe back again...and thank God we're finally getting it...that BOTH guys have done a considerable amount of growing up since then and the way they handle this whole blow up reflected that?
Now your in for it Frank!
ReplyDeletethis might be a stupid question but are there any digs at the show The Mentalist in it? I have not started watching season 7 yet.
ReplyDeleteAwesome! Fantastic! Great! The boys have decided to forgive each other and move on. The show was just excellent from beginning to end! I am really enjoying this season so much.
ReplyDeleteI didn't see any but I only watched season 1 of The Mentalist. A fan of the show might have picked up on something I missed. Thee was nothing outright though.
ReplyDeleteIt's only been 1.5 weeks so I don't think anyone would have forgotten their faces by now.
ReplyDeleteDean was reacting to Ellen's from beyond advice there.
ReplyDeleteI agree that we have not seen the last of Sam's hellucinations.
ReplyDeleteI remember hearing Dean say something about "he went all the mentalist on you" to Sam after they met with the pawn shop guy.
ReplyDeletei thought that was kinda stupid they killed the good witch ghost person but its fine. I just thought they could've spared a life. It was a good episode though and next week im a little surprised the groom is sam and i cant think of anyone who would be his wife! she has brown hair and caucasian thats all we know.
ReplyDeleteI agree in a way. But I also don't think it makes Dean look pathetic. he might not have been stuck in the cage for God knows how long but he had a pretty shitty year as well, and while I think they're overdoing the whole ordeal, for him to feel so bad for merely lying to Sam was really brotherly.
ReplyDeleteYES I LOVED THE ELLEN REFERENCE I HAD TO WATCH THAT SCENE TWICE BECAUSE I WASNT SURE ON IT.
ReplyDeleteI can't remember which episodes Dabb & Loflin wrote.
ReplyDeleteJust watched it.
ReplyDeleteWe had the mandatory "We need to call Bobby so that he can tell us what to do" comment.
Because they had to ditch the impala until this whole "serial killer" thing is over and done with.
ReplyDeleteSam has feelings? And they're driving the plot? I'm sorry, but that's not even remotely true. When was the last time we really got to hear Sam express ANY feelings/emotions. Sam has issues? What issues? I thought he was all better and was "feeling pretty good." Dean on the other hand, is chock full of issues and feelings... constantly... and we ALWAYS hear about them...
ReplyDeleteTook me back to the early seasons,I liked that.
ReplyDeleteThe thing is, is that they're not telling Sam's story.
ReplyDeleteComparing this with a story of a different trauma - say a story of a woman being raped on a train - a typical story would be a description of the woman boarding the train and going through the experience, the after-effects and her healing process, some post-traumatic stress effects (maybe she's afraid to be near trains now), and then the story might go on to tell how she finds a new meaning in life with working with trauma victims, and how she was able to move forward.
ReplyDeletewhat completely shocked me, though, was how quickly the Amy drama was resolved.. yeah, I'm sure there'll be a bit of residual fallout, but really? so quickly? don't get me wrong, I'm glad to have the boys together again, but it doesn't seem like Sam put up too much of a fight.. I don't know how realistic that is, but then again, the Winchesters don't really deal with "realistic" very often.. so hey.. I won't complain.
wow, I didn't even notice! thanks :)
ReplyDeleteHow do you know it was the middle of the night?
ReplyDeleteI rated it awesome as I did 'Meet The New Boss' and 'Slash Fiction'.
ReplyDeleteThe episode was very well written and acted out.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely true.
ReplyDeleteSam has had everything thrown at him from age 6 months:-
the demon blood,
the visions,
the fact that his own father told his brother to kill him if he couldn't save him,
the whole demon blood addiction /Ruby story,
having been told that he was the Devil's meatsuit, ( Dean was Michaels's, okay but if I had to choose who to have inside me, I wouldn't pick Lucifer),
having to undergo nearly 200 hell-years of torture while probably trying to protect Adam too, ( that has never been addressed),
getting yanked out of Hell witthout a soul, and because of that lack, not having moral principles to base his life on ,and so killing without remorse along with the Campbells, just to have that prey on his conscience when he does get his soul back,
Castiel, a once friend, pulls down his wall leaving him at the mercy of his terrible Hell experiences,
and to end it all he asks his brother to trust him, which he doesn't do and then lies to him for days,
plus the fact that Sam's phsychology has never really been explored in depth at all.
I have probably missed out a lot of other things, so I think Sam has bundles of issues that could be addressed by the writers.
I am in no way putting Dean down here because I love him as much as Sam and I know he has his own issues, but they do tend to take precedence over Sam's.for some reason known only to the writers.
I'm from Indiana. I'm used to stepping in it!
ReplyDeletehaha, nice... can't wait to catch up with season 7 and watch this episode.
ReplyDeletejust noticed it... you are the top 1 commentator... :)
ReplyDeleteThat's for sure! But i was referring to the"old guy drinks" now i may not be a guy,but i am old enough to say older, not old. Ha,I guess one day you will also find out, lol. :)
ReplyDeleteIt's weird because in this area everything we drink out of has a handle on it. We'd never see a guy Dean's age drinking from a rocks glass. The bartenders are both pretty and tough. They wouldn't allow it. HA!
ReplyDeleteHmmm... my comment seems to have disappeared... :)
ReplyDeleteI like Melanie.
ReplyDeleteHe did...when the guy was reading their feelings from their body language. I'm a Mentalist fan and I thought that was hysterical!
ReplyDeleteAlso, the main PiP read the body language of Sam and Dean throughout the episode.
ReplyDeleteSam didn't know Cas brought him back until Cas told him that. He didn't remember that part.
ReplyDeleteWhen Dean was brought back, he didn't know how it happened either.
ReplyDeleteDean did get a chance to describe his Hell experience when he told Sam about becoming a torturer. We learned more about it when we met Alistair and saw their interactions while Dean tortured Alistair. It's been 29 episodes since Swan Song and we still haven't heard about Sam's experience from his own words.
ReplyDeleteNot sure what you mean about not experiencing Dean's inner angst until the last few seasons.
ReplyDeleteWe have to stop agreeing like this.....
ReplyDeleteAnd with all due respect, I think you're being a little unrealistic about wanting all the details of Sam's experience. We only found out details of Dean's because Alistair showed up. Yes, he mentioned having tortured people...he didn't go into it in depth, giving us every detail of every moment and telling us everything he saw and did, which is what you're suggesting we need from Sam.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I don't think reliving every second of the experience is going to do Sam much good.
ReplyDeleteWhy the hell, is always Sam who apologizes in the end? I think he had every reasons to be angry, and i understand Dean pov but it doesn't mean he was right or that it was fine to lie to Sam. I love that the brothers are together again, but shouldn't have been Sam to give up, or at least not this easily.
ReplyDeleteI wanna see more of Sam story this season, he has been through so much, when will they gonna show us what he feels, what he thinks? He seems to just accept things, i mean what does he think about what he did when he was without a soul? What does he think about what Cas did to him? What does he think about been the Devil's meatsuit? He was tortured in hell for years, he broke the damn wall, and he is just fine? Yeah, he has hallucinations, but in the past 2 or 3 weeks he seems to not have them anymore. So it was so easy to overcome what he suffered in hell? So many warnings from Dead and nothing? (I know the season is not over yet, theres still hope)
For the first time we had a angry Sam, we saw how he felt, he felt hurt for what Dean did, and he was right, but everything was just ignored and in one episode everything was forgiven.
ReplyDeleteWhy it's always Sam who apologizes? Because that's who he is. Isn't emotionally constipated like Dean. If he waited for Dean to speak up, they would never talk. Dean's what John made him. Sam has always been much more free with his emotions. By now he knows he has to make the first step with Dean. Only because of that can they meet in the middle.
ReplyDeleteThat's crap (not aimed at you, but at the show). Season 1 Sam was in touch with his feelings, but he didn't always defer to Dean and John. Quite the opposite actually.
ReplyDeleteYou are comparing S7 Sam to S1 Sam? As I said, BY NOW Sam knows. S1 Sam wanted to get way way away and he behaved accordingly, he knew he wouldn't be sticking with Dean and John and he didn't care much about what Dean or John wanted. S7 Sam wants to be a hunter and stick with Dean, he's willing to "work" on the relationship he has with Dean and not burn bridges. Apples and oranges.
ReplyDeleteOk, a more recent example is early season 4 Sam (before the addiction took over). Sam could have stuck to his guns about Amy without burning bridges. They could have agreed to disagree but continue to hunt together.
ReplyDeleteYou said you wanted Sam to describe the experience, share his feelings about it, tell what he remembered about Adam and about having been brought back by Cas and what it was like to have a soul. That's a heck of a lot of detail to go into...a WHOLE lot more than Dean did. He simply said he tortured people to get off the rack and was ashamed of himself because he enjoyed it. Period...end of description. Alistair showed up and made him relive it more.
ReplyDeleteI really don't think it's necessary to go into all of that.
Awesome for so many reasons ;)
ReplyDeleteSam's hell experience and post hell repercussions (soullessness and hallucinations) has really been Sam's only storyline for both seasons 6 and 7. Dean's hell storyline had to share time in season 4 with his destiny told to him by the angels to save the world from the apocalypse. They can find time to fill in more of the holes in Sam's story.
ReplyDeleteWe have a pretty detailed account of how Dean's hell time was spent.
Anguish, guilt, fear. Whichever adjective you wish to use.
ReplyDeleteSammy got over it and is following his own twelve steps.
Dean's storyline had to be told in some detail because it was germane to the overall Apocalypse story...it was the breaking of the first seal.
ReplyDeleteI don't think an overdue amount of time was spent on it.
Great list. Here's some more...
ReplyDeleteDemons possessed people around Sam his whole life for the purpose of watching and manipulating him.
Sam watched his girl friend die the same way his mother died.
Sam was made to feel guilty for wanting a college education.
Because Sam did not embrace the hunter's life as a child, he was never able to earn his father's approval.
The emotional consequences of most of these issues has never been touched upon let along explored.
You are totally right. I missed it the first time around. There also is a dig about California that might have been referencing that show.
ReplyDeleteCurrently yes, but I am secretly campaigning for Bruce or Wilson to take over that spot.
ReplyDeleteI've now rewatched the episode and certain scenes over and over again.
ReplyDeleteI upgraded it too once I rewatched and could get my brain wrapped around a few key scenes.
ReplyDeleteThey didn't realize she was good when they killed her. They thought she was the one who was killing off the people. It was only after Melanie's friend was killed did they realize it was the ghost sister who was actually doing the killing.
ReplyDeleteIn you ADDED section that was exactly what I was thinking...Sam slapped a bandaid on it so to speak because he's having it rough in his head.
ReplyDeleteWell, I'll be... :)
ReplyDeleteI'm trying to keep up in the # of comments but I just can't. O.o
Lately it seems like I either have something school-related to work on, or I'm at work, or I'm falling in love all over again with Mass Effect 2.
ReplyDeletePeople still remember Nancy Grace. Oh wait..
ReplyDeleteSo how would Osiris have fared in Lily Dale?
ReplyDeleteHis head would have exploded.
loved it. apart from those few moments when they were really obviously annoyed with each other, this episode took me back to old times where we hunted scary monsters.
ReplyDeletethis new car is depressing me though, i want the baby back!!!
and that moment were the ghost was at the window was actually terrifying! when was the last time a salt circle has actually worked throughout an entire episode?
i liked modern psycic girl and how they completely threw all those fake psychics and their crap under the bus.
was any one else really annoyed all episode by sam's annoying sideburns!?!?!
oh thank god. i could not have gone for the rest of the season without seeing her
ReplyDeleteI love my boys and I am thrilled with the direction of the writers to get this show back to it's beginning.
ReplyDelete"Carry On My Wayward Son"......................there is hunting to be done!
I couldn't agree w/you more! Kudos
ReplyDeleteIt was going to be tough to follow the last ep but this one was brilliant as well.
ReplyDeletePiP?
ReplyDeleteAgreed, sometimes it just takes someone to be the bigger man and that is what happened here. Sam had to be the bigger man, see past all his own issues and get Dean to talk so to understand where Dean was coming from. Sam has sort of had to overcome all his own shit this season so he can be there for Dean, its just who Sam is.
ReplyDeletenext time Sam lies to his brother we'll put it down to him being brotherly then shall we? See how that goes down with the fans?
ReplyDeleteand I definitely agree the writers are overplaying Dean's issues. His Catholic guilt is becoming tiresome, sometimes I want to tell him strap on a pair and deal already but I guess then he wouldn't be Dean would he? Imagine how much better he could feel if he just stopped playing the martyr?
ReplyDeleteperson in peril. ;)
ReplyDeleteChrist on a bike, you sound as obnoxiously angsty as Dean. We get it.
ReplyDeleteScaring you a bit, isn't it? :)
ReplyDeleteloved this eposide .
ReplyDeleteI really liked the episode, like many of you already said, it felt like the old Supernatural.
ReplyDeleteOh, and I'm SOOO glad the Amy crap is over. It was the one thing about this season I really disliked.
And, after watching the promo and the sneak peek for this week's episode, I have a feeling we're getting another great one on Friday ;) Can't wait!!!
lol I wouldn't exactly use the words "spare a life" referring to a dead person ;P
ReplyDeleteThis was a decent, old school Supernatural episode.
ReplyDeleteThe only part I didn't like was the way-too-easy resolution to the brothers' issues. Sam was too conciliatory, Dean wasn't conciliatory enough, and the whole thing felt rushed and unearned. Then again, I haven't been too impressed with this season up to this point so I shouldn't be surprised.
