I hate to admit it but I am getting disenchanted with this show. Every time Emma and Henry are on screen together I get the urge to change the channel. I find myself looking forward to the fairy tale world scenes but the reality does not match it. The best part of this episode was Rumpelstiltskin.
Great episode once again! And great job Robert Carlyle I really like they centered on his character with this episode and I hope they do that at least a few more times this season since its been picked up. And lol regina is sleeping with the sheriff I actually thought it would be him of all people! Lol im really going for him to being the huntsman. Great job to Robert as Rumplestiltskin especially and Im very curious as to what possible power rumple can get from collecting kids. It seems like Azazel from supernatural lol. Why does the next episode have to be two weeks! =( Great job with this episode and good interpretation to Cinderella they made her more fun to watch. O btw it took me totally by surprise when rumple killed the fairy godmother lol I didn’t see that happening I just saw the explosion and I almost choked on my pop lol. Robert Carlyle is and will always be the one to mainly keep me watching. If he were to leave it would pretty much take like 50% of my liking for the show because his 2 characters are very fun. The actor and their characters I like the least is probably ginnifer Goodwin. Her Cinderella is ok, her acting is ok, and her mary Margret is..eh.. but she’s not “bad” just my least favorite.
lol idk emma and henry to me are what connects both worlds and theirs more realism to it so that may be a factor. I do agree tho on Rumple he was the best! And i am betting what ever favor she will have to pay gold back with will be big. But i think another factor is that their making it feel like it doesnt exist (even though it doesnt) but they make it feel like it in their real world version and i feel that to but mainly its when they actually talk about project cobra lol.
Lots of Robert tonight, and that made it fun to watch. Sorry to see the sheriff and the mayor are in bed together, literally. That means it was the mayor's plan to put Emma to work in the department.
I quite enjoyed this episode. Was just me that thought that the make up of Cinderella was a bit orange? In the real world it was ok, but in the fairy tale world it seemed orange and weird.
The Stroybrooke bits again felt so contrived and predictable to me. I watch and mostly want to forward through the "real world" for the Enchanted Forest bits.
At least this episode had a healthy dose of Robert Carlyle in it! Not so coincidentally this is the first episode I rated above "ok"... This one got a "great".
Henry has gone from believable and cute to repetitive and boring to me. I still think he brings out the best of Jennifer Morrison acting wise, but I'm getting tired of his never listen to anybody and never pay any consequences role.
I found it nice to not have any apple closeups with the Mayor tonight!
It felt odd to me Ruby's/ Little Red Riding Hood's lucky charm is a wolf.....
I'm growing very tired of how obvious the Stroybrooke plots are. Not just the predictability, but the way they drive points home with redundancy. How many shoe scenes do we need to get the connection to Cinderella?
I wish everything on the Storybrooke side was more subtle and nuanced. It would be a much better counterpoint to the Enchanted Forest and a much better show in general!
Anyone else think Emma may be the author of the book Once Upon a Time? She seems to tell people what to do and their Storybrooke and Enchanted Forest characters follow her lead.
I think Jennifer's best scenes are with Henry actually. Although that is not saying much since most of her other scenes are mostly meh... I guess I can ignore the annoying factor with Emma and Henry to same degree since their scenes will likely be the scenes that expose the secrets of the show.
I too want to spend more time in fairy tale land. Storybrooke has no grounding in reality even if it is supposed to be the "real" world. It needs to have guidelines and rules to ground it besides no one can leave except Emma and anyone with her when she wants to go. I find Henry to be another spoiled brat on TV and that landscape is littered with them. There needs to be real consequences for him too. He's in good need of a spanking. In the end, what started off charming now either makes no sense or feels contrived. I still like many of the characters and the mystery is still intriguing but the plot needs focus and the characters need to be tweaked. Mostly though, it needs to find some humor and a bit of edginess.
I could not agree more about Henry! If The town's richest and most powerful person's young son ran away and continued to show the attitude he has, he should be sent off to military school or have a personal bodyguard babysitter that will rein him in.
My major issue from episode 1 has been the lack of grounding reality in Storybrooke.... even if it is a fairy tale town and not "real". It will likely be the inevitable cause of me not continuing to watch the series.
I agree about Henry: he is annoying and it is impossible that he wouldn't ave at least a baby sitter... come on.
About the Ruby wolf charm: in the original Red Riding Hood story the girl ends up going to bed with the wolf and the story served as a cautionary tale to young girls not to venture off limits or "bad things would happen" like going to bed with someone before being married. Perhaps the OUAT Red Riding Hood's character will be more developed in this direction, with RRH having an affair with the "wolf" or wanting to, what would explain Ruby's fantastic über sluttiness, as her apparent fondness for wolf related jewelry :)
I have already pointed this out in another post, but I think it is interesting to say that many of those Grimm tales had sexual conotation or made references to it. For example, in the original Rapunzel the evil stepmother finds out that Rapunzel had been letting down her hair for the prince/guy to "visit" her when her dress gets too tight around the waist...
BTW, I assume that Mr. Gold wanted to make a deal with Emma in order to be spared when she breaks the curse, because he seems to know what is going on after all.
I don't know if the Sheriff is playing Regina (and actually liking Emma), or if he is yet another pawn. It seems he is only doing what Regina tells him to and I wouldn't understand why on earth he would risk pissing her off. I just really really hope they don't start with the damn love triangles.
And Robert Carlyle is the best thing on the show. Period.
That favor is going to royally bite Emma in the backside. I was kind of surprised that all the players in Cinderella's story were in the same "places" in the present. But it worked pretty well and was a nice way of getting us an idea of what Emma went through when it came to giving up Henry.
I couldn't believe Cinderella let Rumpelstiltskin touch her belly. Am I the only person certain that he KNEW she was lying about having twins before he signed that contract?
I enjoyed the episode overall but I agree about Henry. While I don't find him as annoying as some other TV kids they need to get more realistic with the "real" world scenes. A lot of times when they pull something off under the Mayor's nose I just roll my eyes because it is so contrived.
Robert Carlyle really saved this episode and I hope we get to see more of him from now on.
NOOO Graham- watcha selling yourself like that for? Another really good episode- really enjoyed it and I like how they're focusing on one fairytale a week, it makes for much better storytelling. :)
I find it so odd that 500-year old fairy tales are more adult than what we "more advanced" people will tell our kids these days! XD I remember a lot of them had more violence and adult themes but I didn't recall Little Red Riding Ho' sleeping with the wolf! That does change the moral of the story a bit.... XDYeah I'm not sure I think Emma is the author but it did pop into my mind tonight. I agree about Rumpelstiltskin... He seems to be a thrill seeker that enjoys besting others in a battle of wits almost as much or more than whatever the actual "wager" is. At first I though that Mr. Gold knew what was going on and is more connected to the Enchanted Forest side of things, but I'm beginning to wonder if he is just so "in the know" about Storybrooke that he comes off as knowing more than he does in regards to the Enchanted Forest...
Not sure on Graham either.... He could be more in the pocket of the Mayor and keeping tabs on Emma by being the good guy around her. OR if he is the Huntsman, he has been more of an unwilling pawn for the Evil Queen and when he gets a chance he rebels and does the right thing. He certainly does not come off as evil, but then again even Mayor Mills barely comes across as evil since she is so utterly inept!
I mean she goes right up there in the pantheon of inept villains along with Simon BarSinister, Sindely Whiplash and Wiley E Coyote!
Even though I though Graham was the Big Bad Wolf or a werewolf based on his picture hitting it off with a wolf, I think you are right about the huntsman. There could even be a parallel: the queen sent the huntsman for Snow White's heart and got screwed and now Regina sends the sheriff to get along with Snow White's daughter and perhaps "win her heart" and will, again, be on the losing end. I think the double "heart" reference is tacky, but since this show seems to enjoy obvious "in-your-face" references (*Cinderella* cough * shoes* cough*) it could be just about it.
Yep, Regina doesn't hold a candle to her Evil Queen self. She is all about the evil looks and no action. Inept villain indeed. But I won't complain, since there is the magnificent Robert Carlyle.
Talking about Carlyle.... I am very confused as to how much Mr. Gold knows. The way he said "Emma" is a beautiful name (pilot) sounded very "in the know" and the fact that HE brought Henry to Regina, might indicate that he not only knows but set things into motion...The fact that he traded the baby for a future favor from Emma also seems to indicate that, but it could all just be a hunch and coincidences...well...annoying kid and inept villain (and lackluster main character) aside, I like the fact that this show is at least kind of original. After all, how many cop shows and 20's friends' comedies and CSIs can one handle?
Gald I was not the only one that is fed up with the overly repetitive callbacks to the Enchanted Forest... like Apples with the Mayor or Cinderella and shoes!
The sheriff is the woodsman in Snow White and he works for the Queen (Mayor) when he took Snow White into the woods to cut out her heart he had mercy for her and could not do it. The same will happen for Snow's daughter. The sheriff will only go with the Mayor for so long....but when it gets down to hurting Emma he will not abide by the Mayors/Queens wishes. I wonder if Henry knows who Mr Gold really is?? His identity and the fairy tale legend of knowing his name will be the deal breaker in the finale. I like the spin on Cinderella. I thought it was grand to see both royal couples dancing and working together. It was a little/big girls dream to see that play out. I gushed when I saw the glass slippers. LOL my husband laughed at me! LOL . I would also like to commend set directors for Snows apartment which I love. All the distressed wood and brick.....very dwarf cottage looking! The Sunday night 8pm hour is a nice escape to a grown up fairy tale it's fun. Kinda reminds me of when I was a kid and would watch Disney on Sunday nights.
I understand what you're saying about Emma hanging around with Henry behind Regina's back, but I truly don't think there's any other way for them to be around one another.
I do agree completely that Henry is a brat but perhaps is all due to the fact that for the first time someone is focusing completely on him (Emma). I think that given the background they established in the first episode, Henry is a very lonely boy, and Emma, as she's said repeatedly, is not mother material, she's going to have to learn to say no to Henry. I think that's an issue most parents have to deal through out their lives.
He made some sort of comment on the order of, "Oh, twins huh?", so I'm sure he knew. He also seemed to know about the quill, the way he held it up and talked about it. He signed anyway, possibly because he knew he could still create curses from jail.
Good point about a babysitter. Regina could certainly afford one. How about after-school day care? Does she have some twisted reason for leaving him alone, knowing he'll wander off to find Emma?
I like your take on the fact that since Henry seems to know who a lot of people were in the Enchanted Forrest but doesn't know yet who Mr. Gold was, finding out his name could be a gamechanger further on, just as it was in the original Rumpelstiltskin tale.
great episode!! very interesting how the mayor and the sheriff are sleeping together! but one thing i didn't get was did the sheriff ask her to be deputy because the mayor told him to or actually just to help her our?
I think it's a tall task to ask Storybrooke to be grounded in reality. By all accounts, the entire town had come into existence because of a curse from a different reality. This is also a town where time was frozen, no one leaves, and no one seems to visit either. I didn't miss the look of surprise by Granny in the pilot when Emma requested a room. I have my doubts that the outside world pays any attention to the existence of this town. Storybrooke may have been placed in the real world but I'm not certain it's really a part of the real world.
It was great ! I love the twist about Cinderella about her deal with Rumple. It was really dark.. Love it! I have to say: i enjoyed the Fairyland storyline more than Storybrooke this time.. but Mr. Gold/Rumple (amazing Robert Carlyle) make my day. I can't wait to see more
If you know the tale of Rumple you will know that the millers daughter had to give up her 1st born....Emma just made a deal with Mr Gold(Rumple) he will probably want Henry. Well we know his name is Rumple and that will be the deal breaker......how they figure it out ???? Maybe those pages of the fairy tale book are elsewhere......
"I'm growing very tired of how obvious the Stroybrooke plots are. Not just the predictability, but the way they drive points home with redundancy. How many shoe scenes do we need to get the connection to Cinderella?"
I think this is a problem that could be easily fixed by hiring better directors.
I'm beginning to think that Rumpelstiltskin wanted this curse as much as the Evil Queen did and so put it all in motion, making the Evil Queen his pawn. He had to know Cinderella was lying or it undermines his character. I hope we get more back story or character development on him.
I was half serious when I posted it and I still stand behind it. What does he give to the show besides nagging, whining and making himself out to be the only person who knows what is going on. I would be very inclined if the Mayor/Evil Queen takes more drastic measures to keep him at home.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
It was great! I loved it.
ReplyDeleteRumpelstiltskin is such a fun villain, always looking for ways to cause trouble no matter what.
ReplyDeleteI love Rumpelstiltskin. He is such an enjoyable villain and I can't wait to see more of him!
ReplyDeleteI hate to admit it but I am getting disenchanted with this show. Every time Emma and Henry are on screen together I get the urge to change the channel. ReplyDeleteI love the show, but the Emma and Henry scenes are really annoying. The sappiness is way over the top.
ReplyDeletePlus, Henry being a brat and forcing Emma to take him to work the case made me want to smack him.
And Emma hanging around a 10 year old boy against the wishes of his legal mother... yeah, she won't make a good cop.
Rumpelstiltskin/Mr. Gold is quickly cementing his place as my favorite character. He completely out-shined everyone else tonight.
ReplyDeleteNaughty naughty sherif Graham!! I want to know what's up with that!
ReplyDeleteI could not agree more about Henry!

ReplyDeleteI love Ruby, I hope she gets an episode soon. (If David Anders turns out to be the wolf, even more awesome.)
ReplyDeleteI feel bad for Emma and that deal with Rumpelstiltskin. I like Carlyle as Mr. Gold a lot more than Rumpelstiltskin.
ReplyDeleteThe ending was pretty expected for me I have to say, they spend way to much together and she has him under her boot so it was logical.
I did not like Cinderella as much as I like everybody else I have to say, I'm not sure why though...
I'm really enjoying the Emma-Henry interactions, I don't like them sneaking around but I can see there's no other way around it for them.
I understand what you're saying about Emma hanging around with Henry behind Regina's back, but I truly don't think there's any other way for them to be around one another.

ReplyDeleteYAY Ruby! I had missed this level of trashiness/sluttiness since Joy, from My Name is Earl.
ReplyDeleteI thought the same thing! Thomas was just kind of.. there.. but there's no denying Robert Carlyle is fantastic!
ReplyDeletehe's absolutely fantastic.. he's one thing that I can be sure to look forward to every week
ReplyDeleteWow didn't get to watch the show yet but I am going to watch it now. Everyone's comments were amazing. Loved them all.

ReplyDeleteThe Evil Queen already has to do whatever he wants if he says "Please."
ReplyDeleteRobert Carlyle really stole this show this week.
ReplyDeleteBut Please somebody kill this little kid or brainwash him or gag him!!! He's so unbearable that if it'll continue, I'm gonna stop watching this show.
I didn't love it but I like it.
ReplyDeleteMr. Gold is the real BAD character, forget the Evil Queen!
ReplyDeleteregardless of how you feel about the show, that's a terrible thing to say.
ReplyDeleteI was half serious when I posted it and I still stand behind it.
ReplyDeleteWhat does he give to the show besides nagging, whining and making himself out to be the only person who knows what is going on.
I would be very inclined if the Mayor/Evil Queen takes more drastic measures to keep him at home.
