In its second week, AMC’s period Western Hell On Wheels drew 3.8 million total viewers, 1.8 million in adults 18-49 and 25-54. That was down 14% in total viewers, 25% in 18-49 and 21% in 25-54 from the series’ solid premiere. Meanwhile, another freshman, Showtime’s Homeland, continues its steady growth. The conspiracy thriller averaged 1.42 million viewers at 10 PM, up 7% from the previous Sunday, and 1.68 million for the night to post its fifth consecutive week of ratings increases.

  1. Thanks for sharing. I'm happy "Homeland's" ratings are steadily improving (even though it's already renewed for another season). How "Hell on Wheels" is doing so much better than "Breaking Bad" did, I guess I can't understand.

  2. Hell on Wheels simply has the best lead-in you could imagine on basic cable. The Walking Dead attracts a huge viewership and it's definitely a main reason for HoW's good ratings and I also suppose that a western attracts more fans than a dark drama about a high school teacher cooking meth. It's definitely not as brilliant and excellent as Breaking Bad, but the second episode was a huge improvement over the pilot and very enjoyable.
And Homeland deserves this steady growth, it's the best show on TV right now.

  3. Plus I think Hell on Wheels had 3 major factors going for it...
The first being that there are a lot of Western fans out there and no Western series on TV for the most part.

Also, After 5 years of great series from AMC I think more people will tune into a AMC premiere simply because the series is on AMC. I know I will.

And lastly like Stix mentioned. The Walking Dead is one of the best cable series you could have as a lead-in.

  4. I think you're right...
Despite its critical acclaim and absolute brilliance many people have been put off by the premise of Breaking Bad. I know many people I mention it to are skeptical if not outright disinterested because of the premise. Either watching a man with cancer or watching a teacher cook meth (or maybe both) put people off.

Once they watch it they understand that  its more than jsut the some of its parts... everything combines on Breaking Bad to make it arguably the best series on TV.

I agree. I was not sold on episode 1 of Hell on Wheels, but episode 2 hooked me. Everything seemed to flow better and just interested me more. It drew me in completely.

  7. Great news about Homeland, I'm so hooked on it that I've already started a rewatch along with a friend I encouraged to give it a go  XD   She was as enthusiastic about it as I am from the get go, and now I know the characters a little better (esp after this weeks twist) it's even more intense guessing who is on what side, lol.

I think the second episode of HoW was even better than the pilot, hopefully this drop off is just the ones who decided it wasn't for them and the figures stay more or less stable from here on in.
