Actually this is the first comment I've made in regard to Lori. Am I not allowed to express my opinion here as well, just because it might not agree with yours? I don't like her character, don't understand why they introduced her in the first place, and I'm frustrated with how hard the writers are trying to make her look like a canon version of a Mary Sue. One third of this promo, for instance, is devoted to how "hot" she looks in skinny jeans. I just don't like her and it's annoying to me and others who dislike her character to see her stealing screen time from the four core characters who made this show great in the first place. I'm sorry if you are fond of her character for some reason, but it's pretty clear that a LOT of us aren't and we have every right to express that frustration as fans of the show.
Quite a few promos, whether pictures or videos, were dedicated to showing off Grace in a bikini. And the guys themselves have been featured with their shirts off many times. That's kind of a silly thing to complain about.
As for not liking her, I don't see how you can hate someone we still know practically nothing about. The amount of information we have on this woman can fit in a single paragraph.
As for the character herself, she seems pretty awkward around people. I'm fairly certain that's by design. After all, as you mentioned, she is not one of the original four characters. Coming into a tight nit group like that and getting to know everyone is ALWAYS awkward. Cut her some slack, people have been whining about her since the very first episode.
And you can express yourself all you want, just don't get defensive, like you just did, when someone thinks you're jumping the gun. Which you have, a lot of you have. As for the assumption that I like her character, that's not exactly accurate. I don't like or hate her because I know almost nothing about her.
The fact of the matter is that people started hating her character from her first appearance and dogpiled on it. I haven't seen one reasonable complaint about her that can't be explained by her not having any backstory.
Call me crazy, but I enjoy it when people come to a reasonable conclusion based on facts. The simple truth is what I said above, we know almost nothing about her.
That's my main complaint about you Lori haters. She's had at most four awkward scenes that could create any sense of dislike for her, and maybe only one of them had anything to do with the character herself. The other three involved her trying to connect with the group and not doing a good job of it.
I'm adopting a wait and see approach for the time being. You can do whatever you want, I certainly don't have any control over your reactions, but keeping an open mind to new characters is actually productive, while hating on one doesn't accomplish anything.
I did give her a chance, actually - I didn't dislike the character on principle, I actually tried hard to like her since I figured she'd be sticking around one way or the other. But I can't help finding her character dry, uninteresting, and annoying. Part of it might be the acting, which I find pretty uninspired, and as I said before a lot of it is the writers trying to cram her down our throats. Initially Steve was very against her being on the team, and if they had run with that tension for a while and built up to her being accepted into the team I might have found it more believable and she might have grown on me more. But we went straight from "you're not welcome here" to "wow, you're awesome, why don't you involve yourself in every aspect of our team dynamics right away!" in less than two episodes. And from there it just evolved to LOOK HOW AWESOME LORI IS pretty much every episode. Yes, we don't have much backstory yet. But I don't think that matters much. They could tell me she was an alien from outer space at this point and it still wouldn't change the fact that I don't find her appealing. She's supposed to be a profiler, and yet she rarely has anything of value to add regarding the psychological aspects of the case (which might be my personal pet peeve seeing as I work in psychology). And again, the acting is very dry, monotone, and flat. And the writers are giving her WAY too much screen time right off the bat, which causes understandable resentment in fans who are tuning in to see Steve, Danno, Kono, and Chin and instead have scene after scene devoted to proving how awesome and kickass this new character is. Had they allowed her presence to evolve a little more organically rather than trying to shove her in our faces at every opportunity, maybe she wouldn't irk so many people.
The fact that we "don't know anything about her" really has nothing to do with why I don't like her, and as I said no amount of backstory is going to change the fact that the actress is very wooden (IMO) and that the writers are trying far too hard to cram her down our throats, adding a fifth character that wasn't needed and stealing screen time from the characters and relationships we tuned in to watch in the first place. As for calling me defensive... You replied to my comment by telling me I was "whining" and insinuating that my opinion was nothing more than a knee-jerk desire to complain, despite the fact that I have never posted in regard to Lori before now. Just because YOU think it's "jumping the gun" to dislike Lori doesn't mean it is. And if you had even expressed that opinion in a respectful manner (i.e. "You know, I think people just aren't giving her enough of a chance," etc) rather than making a snide comment devaluing my opinion, perhaps you wouldn't have found MY response to that as "defensive". I also never said that you liked her. I said IF you are fond of her, and I said that just becaue our opinions differ (which they clearly do) - not that you liked her for sure. And saying things like "you Lori-haters" as though I belong to some club or group, is disingenuous and seems to imply that I'm part of some mindless hateful group as opposed to a fan who has a valid and genuine dislike of a character. I tried keeping an open mind about her, I really did, but the character/actress just rub me the wrong way and I don't like her. That doesn't make me unreasonable or judgmental or cruel, it just means I don't enjoy watching her on screen.
I can't agree more with you. She's such a Mary Sue but still has no personality. They're just picking up this and that from the other four, and making her with these things. I wasn't against a new character when the season began. I was like "hey, more fun and hotness" but instead they're shoving down hour throat a boring, plain character...
I do agree that the biggest issue by far is the writers trying to force her down our throats, which is why I said "they're (the writers) trying way too hard" rather than "SHE'S trying way too hard." But I really don't find the actress to be good, either - part of the problem is that her acting seems very wooden and expressionless to me (a complaint I've heard repeated by others). Maybe it's that they're not giving her good material to work with, but I really don't find her acting to be all that convincing in addition to the poor writing in regard to her character's introduction.
Had they allowed her to be introduced more gradually and more naturally, maybe played some with the tension of having her added to the team against everyone's will and done some exploration of the team transitioning from distrust and resentment to grudging acceptance and respect, I think it could have been interesting and there wouldn't be NEARLY this amount of backlash against her. As it is, though, it seems like the writers are determined to MAKE us like her, RIGHT NOW, NO MATTER WHAT. It's like they're shoving her in our face saying "Look! See how awesome she is? She's great at everything and she's hot! See, Steve and Danno and Kono and Chin all love her now, too! Drink the koolaid, come on, you know you want to! She's just SO awesome that no one could possible dislike her!"
By trying to FORCE fans to like her immediately they pretty much did the opposite. People don't like being told how to think/feel or having things forced on them. If the character is solid and interesting and the acting is good, then they shouldn't need to try this hard to make people accept her. And if they DO need to try this hard, it probably just means they need to do away with her because trying to force people to like her will only do the opposite. They devoted way too much screen time to trying to prove how great Lori is, and people got upset because she messed up the team dynamics and took up valuable screen time that could have been devoted to fleshing out the original teams' stories (like Kono's undercover work). And now that that resentment is there, unfortunately I think no matter how well they try to write her from now on it will still haunt her character. They can try to write in some interesting back story or character development, but when it's built on a foundation of Mary Sue-dom, it's not going to hold up. No one likes a Mary Sue - they're the most annoying entities in fandom, hands down.
LOL which is my long-winded way of saying I agree with you, and thanks for responding! :)

I've always felt the same way about Grace Park. Neither Park, nor German have anything good to work with as far as script and character go.
The REAL problem is that Hawaii Five-0 isn't very competent at writing for women characters.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.

ReplyDeleteya! go Lori!
ReplyDeleteUgh. Can Lori PLEASE just go away already? They're trying WAY too hard to make her hot/awesome/badass and it only makes her that much more annoying.
ReplyDeleteSome sweet looking rides. And Lori didn't look too bad either...
ReplyDeleteI think it's gotten to the point where people whine about Lori merely because they can.
ReplyDeleteThanks! Can't wait.

God I hope that Lori scene is just brief. I don't need more of her. On the plus side more Chin and Kono looks good.

More screen time for Lori? Really? Why...?
ReplyDeleteVery well put.
ReplyDeleteHasn´t there been rumors that they are gonna make her Steve´s new love interest? Or, maybe I´m dreaming.... God, I hope I´m dreaming.
