EW's James Hibberd has more Game of Thrones news for us today, the official release date of the Season 1 DVD or BD box set!

The fantasy drama is arguably the most anticipated DVD release for a TV series that’s aired this year. And with the show’s expected home video revenue factored as a major player in the show’s finances, it’s no surprise HBO has pulled out all the stops. Based on the two disks I previewed, Thrones was given a lavish presentation. The sophisticated menu navigation and behind-the-scenes extras that are on par with DVD sets from hit movies rather than what fans typically receive for TV shows.

Game of Thrones arrives in stores on March 6, 2012. The cost: $79.98 for BD and $59.99 for standard-def DVD. Here’s a list of all the extras followed by 11 exclusive pics and then a video clip from one the of the documentaries.

Here’s an exclusive clip from Anatomy of an Episode — the making of the Sky Cells scene from “A Golden Crown”…

*****UPDATE*****

According to HBOWatch the HBOStore is offering a special gift for pre-ordering Game of Thrones Season 1 on DVD or Blu-Ray.
You may not be able to give the gift of Game of Thrones on Blu-Ray or DVD to your favorite HBO fan this year but you’ll get a special bonus for pre-ordering it. Today at the HBO Store the company is offering an exclusive “Creating the World of Westeros” bonus disc! We’re assuming that this disc is simply a compilation of the web featurettes released throughout the promotion of Game of Thrones Season 1. The DVD will set you back $60 while the Blu-Ray set will cost $80.

  1. This is AWESOME!

Okay, it's not a pre-Christmas release like all of us wanted, but the menus look awesome. IT appears that the documentary footage they released during the season is only a part of each of the DVD/BD special features. They seem to have added aspects to each feature if the pictures are any indication.
    Great news!

I love the storyboard sketches! Always so fun to look at.....

  2. The storyboards remind me a bit from the Lord of the Rings Extended Edition DVDs. And 7 audio commentaries out of the 10 episodes. Looks like I might get it if the price is right.

  3. The bonus disc sounds interesting. I wonder if it will be worth the price difference ordering from HBO compared to Amazon or some other site....

If it is just the officially released material from during Season One, I'm not sure it is, but the completist collector in me wants it nonetheless! XD

  5. If only they'd do a show about making the show. Just 22 full episodes per showseason or so. I'm easy!

  6. 22 episodes and 2 hours per episode? Oh yes, that sounds niiiiiiiiice!
