Thanks to Bruce_F for the heads up.
"Harry Potter" director David Yates is teaming up with the BBC to turn its iconic sci-fi TV series "Doctor Who" into a bigscreen franchise.
Yates, who directed the last four Potter films, told Daily Variety that he is about to start work on developing a "Doctor Who" movie with Jane Tranter, head of L.A.-based BBC Worldwide Prods.
"We're looking at writers now. We're going to spend two to three years to get it right," he said. "It needs quite a radical transformation to take it into the bigger arena."

A lot of people are upset about this but I'm in agreement. The Doctor Who specials are, to be frank, awful. I can enjoy them as a fan of the show but objectively they're very not good.
ReplyDeleteAs long as they can tie it into the show somehow I think this will work. Their best bet would to do an origin story or have it set during the Time War. They would have to rework Daleks for the big screen though because they just scream "low budget camp".
Rut ro do I really want Dr Who coming to the big screen? I really love my Doctor Who right where he is for now.

ReplyDeleteI'd say most of them are sub-par, but not all. A few of them were quite entertaining.
I really don't like the idea of a Doctor Who movie by Yates -.-
ReplyDeleteWow, that could be really awesome. :)
ReplyDeleteI thought the BBC said this wasn't true.
ReplyDeleteDoctor Whos been made into films before and its been hit and miss, and as for the specials being awful, I dont agree with that description but I can agree they are a mixed bag but I think you have to remember it is in essence a childrens show and should be viewed as such, also it is filmed on a bbc budget so its never going to be as glossy as something coming out of Hollywood, nor would I or any of my fellow country bods want it to be. Thats its charm.

ReplyDeleteI'd be a good bit more excited about the prospect without that line. Does it make me sound old and crotchety if I say I love the show just the way it is, in all its campy, niche-audience glory?
Honestly, it's as good now as its ever been, with visuals especially stunning these last few seasons, and Matt Smith quickly passed even Tom Baker as my favorite Doctor.
"Radical transformation" just sounds... worrying.
Ok I seem to be late, this is what taking a break from spoilertv and all things tv related for a weekend cause xD
ReplyDeleteNot sure how I feel about this, could be great, could suck ass like a certain other movie we shouldn't speak off...
I think its a terrible idea
ReplyDeleteI believe it when it happens, DW going to the big screen has been rumoured for years and never works out.
ReplyDeleteI have mixed feelings about this. While I would love to the Doctor get the big screen treatment part of the charm of Doctor Who is its campy feel. I would hate to see that campy charm sacrificed in order to give it more big screen appeal.
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with you there. I not really sure I would like a radically transformed Doctor Who.
ReplyDeleteSo, I assume we're talking a reboot of the Doctor Who franchise in movie form? Mixed emotions...
ReplyDeleteThey calmed people down who thought it was in the process of being made by saying it's only in development. As you can see from the story, the Head of BBC Worldwide is part of this release of info, so would be silly for the BBC to then deny it XD
ReplyDeleteThis would be a big Hollywood film thou, BBC WW are only the creative force behind all this. This being mentioned in Varity (a HUGE Hollywood publication) would be to get the wheels turning and a way of getting people to come to them. I don't think it will be a children's film if I'm honest, they will want to make it as big as possible I imagine, lol
ReplyDeleteIt's never been pushed by Jane Tranter before though, the person who pushed for it to be back in 2005 on the small screen. I have a feeling that this one could be for reals, lol
ReplyDeleteI dunno if Terry Nation Estate will allow the licence for the big and small screen at the same time, nor do I know how long a deal they made with the TV show. They are notoriously bad at allowing anyone to use them unless they have strict control over how they are represented so I wouldn't bet on them being in a film just yet :( lol
ReplyDeleteI was hoping mad about this yesterday, but having slept on it and thought it through I am more open minded. The thing that me was his dismissal of what the show has done up to now, and the starting from scratch idea. The quotes make Yates sound very dismissive of the TV show, which is bound to get any loyal fan's back up imho.
ReplyDeleteI hope that he intends to start from the beginning again, start it on Gallifrey and show some background for new viewers. I imagine it starting like Superman did, a solid intro to home life, before forwarded winding a 100 years to him saving aliens :D We could then have a whole series of films, perhaps with regenerations and different actors wanting to take on the role.
If Yates and Tranter want to take this on with a different spin to it, they need to stick to that and not muddy the waters of the TV show. That means no crossover of stories or characters, they MUST be unique imo for this to work.
OMG this will be so amazing but it has to be Matt Smith and Steven Moffat HAS to wright it and River Song HAS TO BE IN IT!!!!!! :)
