If you frequent the internet a lot you could be forgiven for thinking that SPN and Fringe were the 2 top-rated shows on network TV. They are hugely popular among young, tech savvy people who are into scifi / fantasy / genre as well as social networking; tumblr, twitter, message boards etc (you might say 'nerds' or 'geeks' I couldn't possibly comment except to say that I see those terms as a badge of honour).
These people (and I proudly include myself among them - apart from the 'young' part) are highly active online and are very passionate, but - sadly - aren't representative of the viewing public. Also - again sadly - they are very adept at accessing their favourite shows through non traditional routes. So many avid fans of these shows download them (legally or illegally), live stream them, DVR them, buy them on itunes, DVD or Amazon video. They are less likely than the majority of TV viewers to just sit down in front of the TV from 9 to 10 on a Friday and watch live.Problem for the networks is how to make money out of a massively passionate fan base that doesn't watch live. They need to sort that out because over the next few years this trend is going to spread to other shows, age groups and networks. Fox and CW are in the first wave because their audience is younger.
But if I could have a Nielsen box and somehow get Fringe on my TV, I would watch, because now more than ever Fringe is in danger. I'd like a fifth and final season to end the show properly, but as much as FOX as showed faith in the show last year when they renewed it for a full 22-episode season, that's not gonna happen next May with such low ratings (3.05 million viewers/1.2% of the 18-49 demo, that's just not enough).
That is true, in part, but there just as many of us who are over 45 and even over 50 who watch Supernatural. We are the generation that grew up on sci-fi. I was reading Asimov in the 1960's. The Foundation series and the robot series were on my book shelves. The thing is, not many of us have a Nielsen box, but I do DVR everything I watch and rewatch. I am probably counted in that. I haven't gotten around to renting the Fringe DVD's but I will. The thing is, I will always watch and DVR Supernatural so I can rewatch it. My DVR auto records it ever Friday. The new president of the CW will realize this. He keeps an on things.
Catching up with Suburgatory Fringe Ringer (local broadcast) - I just realized 2 shows from yesterday has moved to Saturday and Sunday because of an election here.
It's FRINGE FRIDAY!!!! Gotta LUV it! CSI: NY as well. Gary Sinese's wonderful acting and those of his fellow actors as well. I've also started watching Ramsey's Kitchen Nightmares.
SPN! However, my godparents are in town and we're going out to eat and I have no clue if we'll be home in time. alksdjfalskdfjalskdfj ANY OTHER NIGHT WOULD HAVE BEEN, YOU GUYS.
Problem is also that people from elsewhere and not necessearily from the US vote in these polls. I`m from the EU and it really pisses me off when I can`t really help my favorite show to get renewed.
Supernatural, Fringe and Nikita (which I forgot to check, oops). DVR's are wonderful because I don't have to give up either Supernatural or Fringe and I always watch both the same day.
There are some ways Gusto eg I ordered my s6 DVD from Amazon.com in the US on the day it was released rather than waiting until it was released in the UK.
There is also an organised campaign to contact the companies that advertise during SPN, to thank them and tell them if it has made us by their products. Many are international brands like Samsung, HP, MacDonalds. You could join in with that.
I agree though that it is frustrating. But even most US fans actions make zero difference. It only matters what those Neilson households do. It is a ludicrous system when the technology exists, via set top boxes, DVR machines connected to the internet etc, to actually measure real viewing habits. They need to update their business plans to match modern viewing methods.
Well Fringe is at the top of my list and the only thing I watch on tv... There really isn't good quality tv anymore... Supernatural fell out of favor with me a coupe of years back... It just got too deep and I lost interest... I always watch Fringe live, and even though I have a DVR I don't use it... Live viewing is what I do cause honestly, on Friday night after work I don't go out and party like the rest of my friends, yes I'm part of the younger generations, but I'm more of a stay at home and watch things the old fashioned way... The TV!
I would love to view live on TV if I could! But sadly I live in Europe, and those shows doesn't air here yet.. which means download/livestream for me :/
But with buying DVDs you`re helping Warner Bros and not FOX. Fox is spending a lot of money to make the show and money from selling DVDs go to Warner Bros. So FOX gets money from advertising..so they need viewers...US viewers.
AW hopefully I WONT watch supernatural cause i got an exam tomorow morning but .... I'll probably stop studying for an hour to watch it.... i hate myself :P
Well, in your three first lines you could very well be describing me too. I never related my actual favorite shows to my reading of the Asimov's sagas during my teen years, that's an interesting thought. The difference is that I don't live in the US so the US networks don't care at all about my TV viewing habits.
Supernatural of course! And then Blue Bloods......if I'm calm enough to pay attention after Supernatural which I haven't been lately. I might have to watch Blue Bloods tomorrow. SN has been taking my breath away this season! :)
Actually it does make a big difference. WB and CBS joint own CW, so underwrite all the losses the CW makes. The $ they make from the DVDs, syndication etc of SPN make up for some of those losses. The owners have a big influence on the CW (they picked Mark Pedowitz for example), and I am sure will make their preferences very clear when it comes to renewal decisions. They will not want to lose those lucrative income streams.
I'm loving this season Sandi. For me it has been the most promising season start since s2. I find the idea of the Leviathans very intriguing, and it looks very much like it will be going back to the feel of the early seasons with the boys back on the road just the 2 of them.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
Fringe and Sanctuary (premiere Season 4, that you have forgotten :P)
ReplyDeleteFringe, Supernatural, Nikita.
ReplyDeleteditto. It's a packed Friday. :-)
ReplyDeleteIf everyone wants to watch Fringe, I'm just curious why the ratings are so low. It really messes my head. Hope Fringe will stay alive.
ReplyDeleteSPN of course. Can't wait for Jensen's second go at directing. And this season has started off so brilliantly that I have high expectations.

ReplyDeleteSupernatural: 7.03 The Girl Next Door
ReplyDeleteWhat will I watch tonight ? France/Albania, the penultimate Euro 2012
ReplyDeletequalifying game. The team is torn apart with multiple injuries and
several key players won't be there (Benzema, Abidal, Ribéry, Mexes,
Sagna, Gameiro, Diaby), but the substitutes will have a chance to prove
they're not just good to play 20-25 minutes at the end of the games (and
Djibril Cissé's back, love that guy). It will be a game it would be
better to win to take some of the pressure off of next Tuesday's game
against our direct competitor for the #1 place in the group, Bosnia, we
wouldn't want to go in playoff like in November 2009, if we win against
Albania tonight, even if Bosnia wins against Luxemburg, a draw against
them in 4 days would be enough to ensure the #1 place…
But if I could have a Nielsen box and somehow get Fringe on my TV, I
would watch, because now more than ever Fringe is in danger. I'd like a

All about Fringe for me tonight.

ReplyDeleteFringe, of course, Supernatural, and probably Blue Bloods
ReplyDeleteJust not feeling it, not very enthralled with the leviathan plot if I'm honest, and didn't really see the point of Sam's 'hallucinations'.
ReplyDeleteActually it does make a big difference. WB and CBS joint own CW, so underwrite all the losses the CW makes. ReplyDeleteYeah, I'd like them to get back on the road, staying in motels and slaying beastie of the week.
ReplyDelete
