I like it and I think its getting better. I am more interested in the dinos as enemies then i am of the sixths lol idk y i think its because every other show has human problems its nice to see a change. Also I really like the family and its dynamic of growth in the show. I think that is like 75% of what will keep people watching the show. It reminds me of the Kents on smallville. I also like Taylor he's a good fun commander that looks like he lets loose a little lol. The only thing i also hope for is doing any background on 2149 like how that bad air and such happend. Im not saying its bad they arent doing

  3. Odd. I think the pacing improved and it was an overall better episode than the pilot, but any improvement was ruined by the terrible VFX of the Pterosaurs. Really bad!

It will get old really fast if the kids are always in danger and used as a crutch for action or drama. It.s only been two episodes, but so far it's the "save the children!" series.

One mention of Sixers and no mention of Taylor's son , the hieroglyphs (or time space markings etc), or the conspiracy of why the Terra Nova project went back in time.

This episode was more natural feeling to me than the pilot which was very forced, but it had its own issues.

If we assume the Terra Nova Project sent back the best and brightest, wouldn't one of their experts think "Gee, thousands of egg fragments might mean this is a breeding ground for some species?" Just saying...

I would have liked for the show to make a point of showing they took the clothes and supplies off the dead soldiers since they would have VERY limited supplies and need to reuse everything - even from the dead.

If the kids are in danger next week and some one has to save them that will be the last straw for me.....

  4. I agree.

When I read they re-shot the pilot and first episodes to make it more about the family and a family adventure series I was worried.... Seems I was justified.

They dont have to mention the sixers right away dude. Just like any other show like supernatural, like a bunch of others i can name but to lazy to, this show has other mysteries and arcs they have to deal with such as the dinosaurs, 2149, terra nova and its people, etc. And dude they said in the episode that they figured that since the animals werent there for the eggs and it was deep under so its not dumb to think they would be gone since they were already. Also the soil was good enough where they needed it for terra nova to be built so its not like they were thinking that at all. And WHO would want to see them taking the clothes and supplies off the DEAD people? Usually its implyed that in any show if a dead guy has or wears stuff thats needed (like in falling skies, supernatural, etc.) they take it off. I assumed that right of the bat and i dont think they wanted to waste the time. Lastly, the kids are main characters they have to be involved in it some way wheter its being in danger or not. I rather that then have them relax in their house or something. Wierd analisys.

  6. Meh. The visual effects were awful.

  7. Such a disappointment.  Predictable.  Sorry fx.  Ho hum.

  8. This episode had a really "No Ordinary Family" feel to it. That's not necessarily a bad thing, but it's definitely a little bit of a departure from the tone of the pilot.

  9. I enjoyed it. I preferred seeing the challenges of the new surroundings tonight as opposed to the "evil conspiracy" arc of the sixers vs Taylor as that obviously is coming so there's time to examine other challenge angles (in addition to a possible rival for Mrs Shannon). Not a mind blower, but a solid ep imo.

  10. Heard the bit about fertile soil, but not buying not being able to tell the difference. Any scientist worth their salt can tell a cyclical event by the layers of egg shells, soil, egg shells soil. If I were leading a scientific team to find a location for the future of humanity I would actually look at the data a little deeper - dig a little deeper... literally.

Things like recycling clothes are details that make a Science Fiction series real. Here we have people struggling to survive on Earth in drab colored rags, grime covered clothing who pass through a crack in time and end up at a survival camp with an army surplus and a Gap store? Why wasn't everyone wearing bright colored lounge wear on Earth?

In a 13 episode season there are generally not many (if any) filler episodes. Last night's was mostly filler. I know plots need time to develop and I was not saying answer every thing in one episode, quite the contrary.

The kids being main characters IS the problem for me. It keeps the plots too light and too family oriented. Terra Nova (the location) is not a Disney vacation site - it is the last refuge for the survival of the human species. That is relatively dark subject matter.

  11. I think that is a bad thing when you consider how turned off people were by No Ordinary Family. I can definitely see this show not making it. There is just too many problems going on.

  12. But since I liked No Ordinary Family (the later episodes a bit more so than the earlier ones, granted), it's not that much of a bad thing to me.

  13. The first people who came and built that were not biologists or zoologists, but soldiers who wanted to ensure physical presence, safety of the future colonists. The things you mention about determining cyclical events - do you really think that they would have the necessary equipment and means to do so right away? The dying world required for something new to start, and as that was a priority, they didnt have time to do what you mention. That said, it is quite realistic this could happen. How many explorers of new worlds ever brought top scientists right away? It was always the same logic - come, settle, build, develop. Science usually comes after that. Since you observe the smallest of details, like the supplies of dead people, you really should have observed this, but I guess when one is bent on being overly critical and employing impossible standards, one will look at even those things that are well done as bad just because he would want to reinforce his criticism and name as many things as possible (the same goes for supposedly poorly FX...pteros were not any worse than bats in Batman Begins)

I disagree, I'll keep watching for the family dynamic over the dino dynamic

You might just have to get used to it, it was clear that is their motivation.. It ties hand in hand with the over arching theme of wanting to create a new and better world for the Shannons, that is for their kids. And showing all these situations where they are endangered drives the plot because its what they have to confront or do to make that better world for their children.

  16. So last post I speculated that maybe the show was featuring riffs and easter eggs to famous thrillers, sci-fi, and action adventure films. Last week there seemed to be the obvious Jurassic Park and Mad Max and this week it seemed to tribute Alfred Hitchcock's The Birds (even though these are tech. reptiles).I didn't expect Terra Nova to be their breeding ground...I kept thinking there was some other plot, but I was actually impressed with a simplicity presented in this episode, because now I know the show will focus on both normal crazy things at the same time as the mystery politics aspect, making things not too predictable, and allowing some time for those things to unfold. What I also found interesting was the character Malcolm Wallace....Alfred Russell Wallace was scientist who rivaled with and expanded on Darwinism in theories of evolution...Wallace hypothisezed about what has become known as "The Wallace Effect":Natural selection can contribute to the reproductive isolation of incipient species by encouraging varieties to develop barriers to hybridization.

Sometimes also called "reinforcement" or "heterozygote disadvantage", the Wallace effect continues to be a topic of research in evolutionary biology, as it is potentially an important factor in speciation, especially sympatric speciation. Its validity has been supported by mathematical models, and recently by empirical field data on the evolution of differing flowering times as a reproductive isolation mechanism[, as well as sex-chromosome linked species preference in flycatchers. This episode that introduced Wallace shows how a species might change location of procreation process, which could be interesting if the conditions would some how be extremely different and the birds would "mutate" and come back to haunt us down the road as something else...or better yet, to think about this theory and apply it to human beings via time travel!!! -(But I am sure I took this too far already, but I can't deny that "Wallace" might be something to think about in general)Anyways I generally liked the episode. But will be looking forward to learning more

  17. I kind of understand why they would do it though --Fox wants to try a sci-fi family show to get more viewers...Don't get me wrong. I love mythology and political dynamics --but sometimes stand alone episodes find their way back in being a connetor in some other later episode..

  18. That's a great point!

  19. I like the optimism represented by the kids. A new beginning for the family as well as humanity. I get it.

I just don't like the idea of them always be in danger. That said it's only been 2 airing so maybe in the next week or two the kids will not be in need of rescuing? I can only hope.

I mostly likely would quit watching before I get used to it honestly. As a humanity struggling to survive or begin again, but as a family adventure series I lose interest. Especially when there are serious plot issues and mediocre (at best) VFX.

I happen to be one of those that's physically incapable of seeing 3D effects and just gets a headache, but my eyes discern bad VFX instantly. I have very high standards for any series that relies on VFX for living things because of it.

  20. Everything about this episode was so painfully predictable and thus so damn boring. This show is trying to appeal to the broader masses too much its losing any chance of getting much needed support from sci-fi fans

    ReplyDelete
  21. Me too! --I like the idea that it could be 'different' and that it's realistic in that not everything that happens has to be a conspiracy (or will that prove false later??).

But I think it gives it more texture. I think the show is trying to be multi-genre so there might be some episodes that appeal to sci-fi group more than the family and?or political group, but I think if they play their cards right they can show us that the genres should all go together, because nobodies life (as in the viewers') is just one or the other...everything overlaps..

  22. I get it, I just don't know if I can stomach it. Considering that my TV time is precious to me, I don't know if I'll stick to this one.  But i'll give it one or two more episodes to see if it grabs hold of me or not.

  23. Meh.  This episode was really tame.  The only really interesting bit was that Taylor has asked Jim to find the mole in camp.  That should be interesting but that's in future episodes, not this one.

  24. Predictable episode indeed...
The cyclic migration plot was quite interesting, but it got somehow ruined when they proposed to use pheromones to get the dinos away and establish a new spawning ground... Every biologist know that the "homing" behavior that some species display to reproduce is very complex. Those dines have not been attracted inTerra Nova by pheromones, maybe by chemical cues that could have been released by the egg shell remains, although apparently they have been excavated when building Terra Nova... So, another possibility is the magnetic cues. Theories have been raised by scientists on the fact that developing embryos/larvae could imprint the magnetic characteristics of their birth location, and use that to come back to reproduce once they reach their reproductive mature age (it's been discussed for sea turtles, salmon...)... Hence, the change in spawning ground would work only for the "new generation"...
Anyway... As DarthLocke4 said... I guess I also went too far on that...

Another thing that really bugged me was the whole interaction between Malcolm and Jim: "you want my wife but it's my wife... and you're just a scientist and me I have muscles so I am a big bad boy that will kick your ass". The moment where Jim proposed Malcolm to come with them hunt the dines and add at the end "I didn't think so" was pathetically childish... and I did not detect it was second degree humor...If they had kept it at the discussion they had at night, it would have been ok, but having that grown up man behaving like his son is just... huh....boring...

Also, the dad who does not know how to cook, can't remember half of the things his wife said blah blah... Outside of being very "cliche" , I do not feel it suits this particular show...

I don't believe I'll keep watching... the fact that it is family oriented would not bother me that much if we actually had real "adult interactions" moments to counteract all the angst and teenage crisis thing... However, I do not find those adult moments here... Too bad... it could have been great...
