More than doubling its Adult 18-49 lead-in at 8:00 p.m. (+160%) and gaining audience throughout its premiere against the World Series and Sunday Night Football, ABC's series debut of "Once Upon a Time" opened with an average audience of 12.8 million viewers and a 3.9 rating, 10 share among Adults 18-49, standing as Sunday's No. 1 non-sports program.
* ABC's "Once Upon a Time" opened as TV's No. 1 drama debut this season in Adults 18-49 and as the top-rated in more than 1 year - since 9/20/10. In fact, ABC claims the season's Top 2 drama debuts with "Once Upon a Time" and "Revenge," respectively.
* "Once Upon a Time" drew ABC's biggest audience in the time period with regular programming in over 3-1/2 years and its top Adult 18-49 number in nearly 3 years - since 3/30/08 and 11/2/08, respectively.

During the 10 o'clock hour, ABC's "Pan Am" qualified as the No. 1 drama with Adults 18-34 (1.4/4) and Women 18-34 (1.9/5), qualifying as the hour's top-drama for the 5th week in a row on the latter measure.
* The new ABC drama retained 100% of it Adult 18-49 audience week to week, while growing by 8% in Adults 18-34 and by 6% in Women 18-34.
A note about increasing DVR penetration and year-to-year rating comparisons: Year-to-year rating comparisons based on the Live + Same Day data stream are distorted by the level of DVR penetration in the Nielsen sample, which has jumped up to 42% currently, from 38% at the same point in 2010. More viewers are watching shows on their own timetables, which may not be reflected in the overnight next day numbers. The only truly valid year-to-year comparison would be one based on the Live + 7 Day metric, once those stats are released by Nielsen.

Good to see that Once Upon A Time by the LOST Alumni opened so strongly. :)
ReplyDeleteWow, didn't expect that.
ReplyDeleteI'm at work now and EVERYONE is talking about it.
ReplyDeleteGreat !
ReplyDeleteI thought it would premiere big since it was one of the few shows premiering between the early Fall starts and the mid-season starts, but those numbers are great!
ReplyDeleteI guess it kind of hit the sweet spot, being the only new show premiering and being perfect counter-programming to the baseball playoffs.
Since Pan Am is #1 for ABC does that save it from possible cancellation? I know the total viewers are low but if it's doing strong in the demo( at least my understanding of the ratings) is that a good thing?
ReplyDelete#1 in the demo for the 10 o clock spot ***
ReplyDeleteI'm glad it did so well. Considering my two new favorites are Terra Nova and Ringer, it's nice to have something strong out of the gate. Let's hope it can continue once baseball is done.
ReplyDeleteYou'd have to see how it is doing against other ABC shows. If the demos are good compared to other ABC shows, then you are probably safe.
ReplyDeleteCongrats to Once Upon A Time.
ReplyDeleteSince Charlie's Angels was a huge flop and Pan Am has regrettably declined, ABC needed a hit. I'm hoping the ratings hold up for this one. I don't want to see this show partake in a ratings free-fall like V did.
ReplyDeleteI wasn't expecting to like it too much, but I'm glad that, so far, I am wrong!
ReplyDeleteAwesome. :)
ReplyDeleteEven if some people don't like Once, you should at least appreciate that this show is going to open up a lot of possibilities for other networks to try more ambitious shows. If the ratings stabilize like this, though I don't see why they would drop a little, let alone drop at all. I bet word of mouth will garner even bigger ratings for next week, considering how much positive buzz it's getting.
It would be nice for something so outlandish to be a big hit on broadcast television.
ReplyDeleteSorry, but Pan Am is doing horribly, in total viewers as well as the demo.
ReplyDeleteGood news. I hope it keeps the momentum going.
ReplyDeleteI didn't expect Once to do this well but this coming Sunday will be very telling...
