POLL : What is your favourite season of Sons of Anarchy ? (Series Finale)

28 Sept 2011

Hi. I wanted to end with a big one, a personal favorite of mine I saved for last : Sons of Anarchy, which entered its fourth season three weeks ago on FX.

So here it is, the final poll of the series of polls I started 3 months ago, pretty much at the time I started to post threads on SpoilerTV (*holding back my tears*). It was great having all your votes and comments on each thread. Some were more successful than others, but all in all I think it was a success. I truly thank all of you for participating throughout the summer, the SpoilerTV community is a great one and its members are good people.

By the way, I did not have polls about which season of Dexter, Chuck and Supernatural is the best because the three of them have had polls on this specific topic over the past few months.

  1. I love Sons of Anarchy, at least in the top 5 of the best dramas on TV this fall (assuming season 4 isn't catastrophic (I'm pretty sure it's not), I haven't started yet and I won't until November 29 when the season's over). Along with Fringe and True Blood, it's the first series I got to start watching week after week from the day the pilot aired on FX (with these 3 big shows, fall 2008 was quite prolific in exciting, ambitious new dramas that lasted quite a while), so I have a special bond to it, and that bond only grew stronger over the years.

The pilot was amazing, it got me hooked on SoA from the very beginning. Then, well, back then it was not as heavily serialized as it is now, so I can't say season 1 was the best… Season 2 is.

Indeed, except a slow-down in episodes 2.09 and 2.10, season 2 was pure awesomeness, full speed from start to finish, leaving me extremely satisfied and eager to get to the next episode each week. The last episodes of season 1 showed us that Kurt Sutter has had a great training writing for The Shield, and season 2 fully explored dark, interesting themes familiar to the famous FX landmark series. Jax was completely opposed to Clay because of the events of the previous season, I loved watching that father/son bond being torn apart, and my only regret is that this conflict vanished that easily (and that Ope forgave Tig that quickly for the shootout), I was expecting a bloodshed and an indelible mark over the MC, but over the long haul it was not possible to continue the show that way. Nonetheless, a terrific second season, my favorite.

Season 3 started out slow, because we all knew the core of the plot wasn't in Charming but in Belfast, and the MC got there only in episode 3.07, so Sutter stalled a little bit, with Jemma's dad and such (the kidnapping plotline to keep Tara busy while the boys were in Ireland felt a little like stalling too, interesting nonetheless). i'm not saying it wasn't good (even an okay episode of SoA is better than awesome episodes of most shows) but watching all 13 episodes over 4 days, it really felt like the season became really addictive around episode 7. At that point, it was back to the level of quality the show had in season 2. I think this season was more violent than the others. The 4 Belfast episodes were the best, even if the last 20 minutes of the finale contain some of the best scenes I've seen in the show.

Episode 3.13 feels like the end of an era, of a three-season chapter (which could be named "Abel"), on multiple angles : Unser is retiring, both Opie and Chibs get revenge with Stahl ("this is what she felt", what a powerful scene) and O'Phealan (loved that Chibs cut him a whole new smile beforehand) out of the picture, Jax chose his side (Clay's, he sees his father as a traitor, now Jax is really in the footsteps of Clay), a new son is on his way, Abel will have a little brother in season 4. What will the next chapter be like ? I have no idea, but I'm sure it'll be great.

  2. I went with Season 1 as it was such a different show to what I was used to watching. It blew me away.

Just wanted to also thank you for doing all these polls. I know how much time is involved in doing a regular feature (I used to do the Question of the Day before real life took it's toll).

It's been a lot of fun looking back at some of my favourite shows and thinking about which seasons I preferred (Not always an easy task!!!!)

    Thanks again Bunky

  3. Season 2 for me
the first one was brilliant, too
I wasn't a big fan of the entire Ireland storyline in S3 unfortunately

  4. Agree on s3, had to work my way through that, hope s4 will get the show back to old s1/s2 glory.

  7. I didn't enjoy S3 as much as 1 and 2 but I loved how S3 ended. It completely caught me off guard with what Jax was secretly doing and what ended up happening to agent stahl ( I never liked her) so I had to go with S3...

  8. Season 1 was great for it's originality and just complete change from anything on TV. I loved the stroy and allusions to hamlet in both plot and dialog.

Season 2 really took off and lifted SoA to another level though. So I vote Season 2.

Honorable mention for this season. Things are really moving forward in the overall story of the Sons. It makes for a lot of great tension and drama!

  9. Haven't started s4 yet. I'm even thinking about waiting until the season is over and then watching it, but I'm not sure yet.
