The BBC has responded to complaints that Torchwood: Miracle Day features "too much gay content".

The fourth series of the sci-fi show, a co-production between the BBC and cable network Starz, has attracted criticism from some viewers who are unhappy with the material.

  1. LOL. Really? Which century do these people live in? (this was meant sarcastically, btw.)

  2. That is depressing. They censor the hell out of it and still get complaints.

  3. Some people just feel the need to complain about everything. You wouldn't hear people saying there's too much straight content, so where's the problem here?

  4. This is where they need to turn the microphone over to Russel T Davies so he can tell them to fuck off.

  5. *sniggers* Can I complain that there's too much straight content in Castle? LOL

  6. I kinda have to agree that the scene was completely unnecessary, it meant nothing to the plot and didn't move the story on in any way.  The Rex/Vera one was odd too, wasn't really needed or built up beforehand, but I think it was there to make more of her death in the next episode :s lol

  7. RTD's problem is that he still trying to be controversial when he includes scenes like this, he needs to realise that times have moved on since Queer as Folk.  We don't need scenes like this in order to make it an 'adult' production.  Sadly he's going back down this route, like he did with S1 & 2, rather than building on the sucess of how adult themes were handled in CoE imo

  8. Come on!!! Really??? They have cut the scenes and even after this people are complaining???? Are they complaining too because Rex and Vera had sex or they only were offended with Jack scene???

  9. However Jack is ominisexual just like Captain John Hart. IF Captain John had his way, he may have had a poodle sex scene! Ha! Xd

I could be wrong, but hasn't Jack been with more men than women in the series overall?

  10. I think the sex scenes were handled poorly in Miracle Day, however.... I think that the sex scenes made sense . Whenever there is eminent danger, people have a heightened sense of sexuality... the adrenaline, fight or fight turns into F#$% or fight for many, many people.

In addition, Jack was mortal for the first time in decades and had a heightened sense of his own mortality and along with that a renewed desire to "live". Experiencing the sexual side of life was not entirely out of character at all.

That said, I'm not entirely sure either sex scene thus far was really needed. Rex and the doctor did add a level of poignancy to Rex watching her be burnt to ashes. However, I think it would have been dramatic and disturbing enough for anyone witnessing the event... lover, co-worker or friend.

  11. The debate should be about sex scenes on tv period. Whether it's gay or not shouldn't even remotely enter the debate, regardless of what side you are on. "Too much gay content." Seriously? And how often have they complained about "too much heterosexual content" I wonder?

  12. Yeah I think he has, thou he has always flirted with just about anyone (male, female, alien) up to now.  So much so that the Doctor always added a 'Behave!!' to him after introducing him to anyone.

We don't need sex scenes to establish the fact that he's ominisexual, just that he flirts with both sexes and, like previous series, has the occasional throw away line about aliens he's been with.  In MD he only seems to flirt with Rex and picks up a gay one night stand :(

  13. This isn't Doctor Who, it's an adult show intended to have adult content.

If you can't handle it, don't watch it. Simple as that.

  14. I'm not sure the scenes were needed either... especially how they were handled. If they had been done better, meaning related to the plot more and added to the plot more, I think they would have been justified - gay sex scene or not.

  15. Having a throw away gratuitous sex scene that has no impact on the plot what so ever does not make a show adult, it makes it pathetic and dull imo.  It's the mistake he made in S1 and 2 that made the show cringe worthy for me, he sorted it for CoE but seems to have back pedalled to this.

  16. Ugh. I didn't care for the sex scenes either - they just seemed to be thrown in for the sake of it - but people like this should either learn to deal with it and shut up, or go watch another show without "offensive," gay content. Like, I'm so sorry Torchwood doesn't share your homophobia, jackasses.

Although I do find it kind of amusing that the problem isn't that there's gay content at all, just that there's too much of it. So it's like, having a omnisexual main character is fine, so long as he only has intimate scenes with women. Or you know, you can only make one reference to Jack's sexuality per episode. I was aware that networks have a history of this sort of thing (Willow and Tara being girlfriends who aren't allowed to kiss onscreen, ect)  but I always assumed it was an attempt to tell the story the writers wanted without completely putting the homophobic crowd off the show. It's a little stranger coming from audience members.

  17. Oh no!  Bare ass!  Everybody run!  Grow up, people.

Rex's constant homophobic remarks seem more offensive to me than two dudes getting it on.  It's also offensive to me that Esther Drummond isn't getting any salacious sex scenes.  What happened to equal opportunity?

  18. people have to complain about everything u don't like it simple just don't watch it.

  19. The UK version was censored? How much different was that scene from the US version?

  20. I don't know what bothers me more... The original complaint, or the BBC's defense. While mostly eloquent, that last line in which they claim the gay sex "was not meant to cause offense" is silly. Of course it wasn't meant to cause offense. It's not like the writers woke up one day and said "Hey, you know what would make everyone who watches our shoe really angry? Gay sex. Because that stuff is awful." *sighs*

  21. It's totally ridiculous ! I think that they don't know the word : TOLERANCE !!!

  22. There's never to much gay content. Ever.

  23. is indeed too much, get rid of it!!!

  24. You are truly an idiot. Look up the definition of phobia. It means a uncontrolled fear of something. Homophobia is not a real word. Most people do not have a fear of gays, including me, they just find their behavior disgusting, immoral, vile, and they need to stay in the closet. They have a right to live as they choose but they do not have a right to shove it down our throats. If you believe they have this right then I also have the right to shove their immoral behavior in their face. You choose Anya, but choose carefully.
