- TNT may have the two most watched series on basic cable this summer (The Closer + Rizzoli & Isles) and the most watched series on the 18-49 demo (Falling Skies), USA Network is nonetheless the #1 channel this summer with all its 8 series among the first 11 shows, all the other 5 TNT series come after them, with Men of a Certain Age even behind all 4 SyFy series, sadly.

- Still, none of these 20 shows is nowhere near HBO's True Blood, the mega hit on the 18-49 demo with an average of 2.75% of the american people between 18 and 49 years old watching the show on HBO (which only a third of the households have) each Sunday at 9pm - the 7 reruns throughout the week, the DVR and HBOGo are not even included.

- If I had made a ranking based on the percentage of the 18-49 demo I indicated in parenthesis, The Closer would be #9 instead of #1 (the audience for this show is quite old). A show like White Collar, with an average of 3.93 million viewers, has more people in the target audience (1.23%) than The Closer (1.20%), despite the latter having 2.57 million more viewers !

- The perfect line-up this summer, ratings-wise, is True Blood + Falling Skies on Sundays, The Closer + Rizzoli & Isles on Mondays, White Collar + Covert Affairs on Tuesdays, Royal Pains + Necessary Roughness on Wednesdays, Burn Notice + Suits on Thursdays.

- The new series Falling Skies and Franklin & Bash on TNT and Suits on USA Network have all been renewed for a second season (Falling Skies season 2 will have 10 episodes and Suits season 2 will have 16 episodes). Necessary Roughness will undoubtedly also be renewed for a 2nd season.

- Rizzoli & Isles has been renewed for a third season (15 episodes), Warehouse 13 has been renewed for a fourth season (12 episodes), White Collar has been renewed for a fourth season (16 episodes), Leverage has been renewed for a fifth season (15 episodes), Burn Notice was already renewed for a sixth season (16 episodes) and Covert Affairs will undoubtedly be renewed for a third season (16 episodes).

- The final seasons of The Closer (season 7 part III, 6 episodes), In Plain Sight (season 5, 13 episodes) and Eureka (season 5, 13 episodes) will air in summer 2012.

- Still no word on the fate of Alphas & Haven on SyFy and Memphis Beat & Hawthorne on TNT.

- TNT cancelled Men of a Certain Age after 2 seasons (22 episodes) and it was the final season of Law & Order - Criminal Intent (10 seasons (6 on NBC + 4 on USA) for a total of 195 episodes).

- Leverage will return on November 27th for 8 episodes and The Closer + Rizzoli & Isles will return on November 28th for 5 episodes.

- Covert Affairs will return on November 1st for 6 new episodes, Burn Notice will air its summer finale on September 8 and will return 8 weeks later for 6 new episodes, White Collar will return for 6 new episodes in January 2012 and Royal Pains will also return around January/February 2012 to finish its third season.

  1. Thank you for putting all this info together. It answered a couple of questions I had..

  2. Memphis Beat's ratings aren't nearly as awful as I thought they were.  It may actually get renewed, not that I'd want it to.  Hawthorne could be a goner.  (crosses fingers)

Alphas ratings aren't great but they seem decent enough.  It should get a renewal.  Conversely, if it wasn't for the fact that Haven is a joint venture with Showcase in Canada, Haven could easily be a goner.

Besides the shows mentioned above, everything else seems pretty solid.

  3. I like Memphis Beat.  Jason Lee's Dwight keeps bringing me back.  It's not appointment TV by any stretch but I always manage to catch up on what i miss.

  4. All I can say is that without USA and TNT the summer hiatus would be unbearable.

  6. Thanks for this. The only shows from there I watch are Falling Skies and Alphas, but it's good to see how they're doing against all the other shows :)

  8. Not happy about some of the ratings.  Haven has to be a keeper.  Please!  I've always wondered why us old folks aren't counted in the ratings?  I am 57 and I watch most of these shows.

  9. Now, I don't watch Warehouse 13 or Eureka (I will soon), but I'm very confused about why Eureka is being cancelled so unceremoniously while Warehouse 13 lives on. The ratings difference is, what, 200K viewers? I know that's a lot for Syfy, but Alphas is WAY below that and is still undecided. Syfy can't really claim the numbers sucking in this case.

  10. Agreed completely. These posts are absolutely fantastic. I love that everything is here in one big post and that Bunky gives a short rundown at the end.

  11. You're not counted because the Nielsen system is antiquated and unable to cope with changing times. Baby Boomers have more money (and spend more money) than the "key" 18-49 demo, and yet they get ignored. This is why CBS isn't the number 1 network (even though their shows are watched regularly by 10 million + viewers). It's awful and stupid, but the advertising companies don't seem to care. They call the shots with regards to how much they will pay for a slot during some show and they haven't been willing to venture into the over 50 market.

  12. Well this is so not fair!!! I am not the norm.  But, I am not alone either.  We should be counted.  I bet a lot of great shows that were canceled would still be on if they counted us too.  My goodness we are the only ones w/money right now.  Cadence is there anything I can do to change it?  If so, let me know.  I will gladly give voice to my disappointment.

  13. I love that the highest episode of Warehouse 13 this season was during HG Well's only appearance so far....what can I say I want a spin off :)

Yes it does suck that we aren't counted but as long as media relies on the neilson ratings were screwed.

  14. So odd that Burn Notice is not the number one show on USA anymore.

  15. Actually it has nothing to do with Nielsen at all and everything to do with those advertisers you mention.  It is the advertisers that drive which viewers are considered important.  Nielsen just delivers the data they ask for.

  16. Eureka has a huge cast so my guess is that it is much more expensive and less likely to add viewers.

  17. Agreed. I have been living on a steady diet of White Collar, Burn Notice and Leverage since the start of the summer!

  18. Ah, I see it as a bit of a "chicken and the egg" scenario.

Do the advertisers only see the data they want to see, or is the Nielsen company unable/afraid to delve into the modern field of television watching with new technology?

Obviously, the data for those watching TV at 50+ is available and the advertisers choose to ignore them along with much in the way of DVR information... But Nielsen's policies haven't changed since the 70s. I think you're right in that the brunt of the blame should lie with the advertisers for being kind of moronic (I mean, really, who wouldn't want to explore selling things to a target audience with so much money), but Nielsen needs to look into what it's doing/how it's doing it and adjust to the new millenium.

  19. Thank you for the rundown. How many more episodes of The Closer and Rizzoli & Isles for the summer?

  20. I'm still waiting for TNT to drop the hammer on Memphis Beat but the show might eek out one more renewal.

  21. Well, Hawthore is cancelled and Alphas renewed.
I'm counting Haven will be renewed with those numbers, which are very good for a Friday night show.

  22. I've read that is mostly has to do with the cost to create this show, apparently it's huge.

  23. I'm really hoping for a 3rd season of Haven, it's getting really good.

  24. Alphas got the green light 3 weeks ago for a 2nd season.  Will they change their mind after seeing these ratings for the finale?
