Haha, wow. I recently started watching the show on Blu-ray and finished Season 3 a couple of weeks ago. Fantastic show, but I don't think Anti-Smoking/Drinking Ads would be that effective. I don't smoke or drink and watching three seasons of the show has not persuaded me to do either.
ReplyDeleteseba canal.. i dunno why but ur posts crack me up..thanks m8 :D
ReplyDeleteThose are those stupid people from lung liga again. There are some rabid people all over who see wolf in every sheep. They must have too much time on their hands and are searching for ways to manifest themselves and make others life difficult. We have some of those stupid groups here in Switzerland like the VCS, which is against cars and demand pay parking logs and that stores urge their customers to use puplic transportation with all severity, even stores where you buy furniture and heavy machinery. (I'd like seeing those guys transport a bed in a bus, right?) :-P or those paraniods who demand a warning before each Simpsons episode. Those are the people who are the reason that they only air Supernatural close to midnight or later, cause it's labaled horror, while they air criminal minds at prime time.
ReplyDeleteMost Swiss are pretty liberal and in the article they do say that the show only reflects the enviroment of the sixties and that the actors only smoke herb cigarettes. I guess the average moderately intelligent viewer will realize that, but apparently the guys from lung liga don't belong in that category. (Remember Dallas? I don't think people started to be alcoholics because of the plot playing around a bar, 80% of the show.)
Word! Why are viewers persistently labelled little children in need of greater protection than our freedom to choose not to watch something, or to watch something and NOT let it influence us?
ReplyDeleteBrilliant...
ReplyDeleteEven though it's not only teens watching the show, I have to admit that I do understand why people concentrate at this part of the audience and ask for preventions. After all, they are still the ones that can be influenced the most by such things.
ReplyDeleteI think a grown up person - and I'm not only speaking of ... I don't know ... 30+ or something ... but like ... I don't know, even before you finished school - knows quite well what to do and what not to do on their own. I hate smoking, but I won't hate people that do smoke, just like I don't really mind if there's a lot of smoking going on in a show.
I understand that this might not be the case for the really young audience, but then again I think this is more about how the person gets educated, in which evironment they grow up and where they stand socially (including friends and all) ... I doubt that anybody would watch the show and think "oh, look, that old dude's smoking a lot. I'm gonna do that as well now 'cause I guess it's cool" ... if they decide to start smoking, then probably not because of a TV show.
And it's smoking. It's legal. Not too healthy. But legal. As well as drinking alcohol, at least when it's not too much and not too regularily. Those shows want you to connect. It's gotta be as real as possible. In real life, there's people around you who drink, who smoke, who don't drink, who don't smoke.
As long as they're not using it to indirectly advertise smoking (in general or special brands) as well as drinking, I don't understand why some people keep wanting to hide the younger audience in some bubble. How's that gonna help anyways?
Also, I've never seen the show, but a clip with all of the smoking scenes cut together ... well, of course that looks bad at first. But it doesn't really represent the actual context / show.
[Oo ... I hope I had a point with this. I can't concentrate too well today.]
