What’s going on with Eureka?

Syfy confirms its ordered a mere six episodes for a sixth season of the veteran sci-fi drama. But the network seems to be disputing a report that the shortened order definitely marks the end of the series.

In a statement issued to EW, Mark Stern, president of programing at Syfy, says: “[Producers] Bruce Miller and Jaime Paglia have brought a creative vitality to Eureka that has kept it fresh and inventive. Although we do not have a commitment beyond six episodes for the sixth season, we are hopeful that this will not be the end of the franchise.”

  1. Why so many different posts on the same thing?  Be easier to follow people talking about it if the the first one was jut updated with any new news :)

  2. Well that statement makes me cautiously optimistic ;)  I feel as though the show has really hit its groove since the timeline revamp.  I really love the characters and their relationships as they stand now.  Even if season 6 is the last (hopefully not), I hope it gets more than a six episode order. And there's plenty of time to decide that seeing as they're only filming season 5 now.

  3. It sounds like SyFy is trying to cover their bases and not commit to the final 6 as the end of the series. Looks to me like they are just saying platitudes so as they don't upset fans.

  4. or they are looking for grass roots fan base support to tell them that this is in fact one of their best shows and that the draw is still there.  let's face it.  not many sci-fi shows stay in the game this long.  Maybe if Firefly was made now, the fan base could have grown faster and it wouln't have been cancelled

  5. I'm confused now.  It almost sounds like the TV show is being cancelled but they hope to make a couple of movies.

  6. Stern's comment could be an indication that they are planning some sort of spin-off.  Not sure what they could spin off, but with more than 20 episodes left, that gives them plenty of time to build up some side story.

  10. I feel a spinoff would be really poor...I love the cross overs they do...stick to those or just end it

  11. I can never tell where I am with Eureka.  This current season is really the second half of last season, even though it's being shown a year later?  Maybe they are just ordering 6 episodes so they can catch up with themselves?

  12. We're still in season four. They're filming season five now. They're going to start filming season six - Which has 6 episodes - soon.

  13. sounds like contract disputes or something that is making it nearly impossible to confirm episodes beyond these 6 for season 6... fingers crossed for quick resolution and confirmation of more Eureka!

  16. This is difficult to answer quickly. I've listened to an Interview with Jamie Paglia on the Sci-Fi Guys Podcast and if I remember correctly the original plan was to air Season 4.5 early this year but somehow that didn't work out.

  17. After Farscape, Syfy wants to kill off one of its bests shows! That sucks! I love Eureka (and Allison/Carter) ! I want it to stay for 2 more years at least!

  18. I don't know whether they're just trying to avoid a hostile fan reaction, or actually trolling for one to "justify" continuing the series. I can totally see The Powers That Be at SyFy playing games with us, though. Perhaps the thing to do is buy stock in Comcast, which IIRC has bought NBC/Universal. Then raise Cain as a stockholder, about the lousy management decisions being made at SyFy. That should get their attention!
