It's our 18th episode poll today and I did something I have not done since the poll began. I rewatched an episode to make sure my rankings fit. But before that, we have the results of the 16th episode poll where like predicted On the Head of a Pin won with 149 votes and 56% of the vote. Dark Side of the Moon placed second with 100 votes for 26%. My predictions weren't so good for the 17th episode so far though. Currently My Heart Will Go On (my vote) is winning with Heart (my prediction) in second. Today I have a much harder time predicting what will win but my guess is that it will be in seasons 4-6. Don't forget to leave comments because hiatus is more fun with conversation. And besides, you really don't want to be stuck on the John Winchester badge do you? :-P
Something Wicked - Michael from Something Wicked is one of my favorite PiP's of all time. He's snarky and scared and brave. He's a great big brother and the parallels between his situation and the Winchesters growing up really hit home to me, especially since I was an 80's latchkey kid with a little brother myself. This episode gave us the WeeChesters and proved that John sucked way before Faith. I also really enjoyed the shtriga. Its looks and the fact that it preyed on children made it one of the scarier monsters to me.
Hollywood Babylon - This episode was pure fun. I loved the in-jokes and Dean as PA. The story line was strange but interesting and they did a great job of pointing out things in the Supernatural world that make little sense. (Why salt? Why not another condiment?) When I'm looking for an episode just to feel good about, this one tops my list.
The Monster at the End of This Book - Anyone who follows the Supernatural comments on SpoilerTV knows that I HATE this episode. It's in the top 10 Worst for me. It made me hate meta episodes. I loathe the introduction of Chuck into the series and I thought the books plot line was utterly stupid. I'm sure there is something to love in this episode but I refuse to sit through it again to find out since I have to watch it next week in Live Chat.
Point of No Return - This is the episode I rewatched today. I wanted to give it a fair shake before I ranked these episodes because it leaves me divided every time. The high point for me is actually Bobby's verbal smack down of Dean, followed by Zachariah's death, Sam saying he believes in Dean and the brothers' Impala talk at the end. The low point is always Adam. While I cannot stand the idea of Adam, he did make canon that he doesn't consider Dean and Sam family and I agree with him. We also learned not to tick of Castiel, which may be a good lesson for season 7.
Frontierland - I'm not as into cowboy Winchesters as most fans, but I happily hummed along this episode right until I had a 19 ton anvil dropped on my head. And it totally ruined the episode for me. I enjoyed watching Sam with Samuel Colt and Dean geeking out over westerns made me giggle. I'm divided about the phoenix because while it is a cool monster, he seemed less monster than most and he was still gunned down. However, I will never vote for this episode in a favorites contest because it has the second worse ending of any SPN episode. The hackneyed, convoluted, absolutely non-sensical delivery of phoenix ashes made me question the writing talent as much as Bugs did. To add insult, it could have been a Winchester victory for once but they screwed that up too. Never have I been so irate about a script as I was with Frontierland and nothing in the previous 35 minutes ever makes up for such idiocy.
Feel free to call me nuts about TMatEoTB and Frontierland below. We will agree to disagree because comments are the family reunion you actually look forward to. (Edited to add: I don't mean to sound witchy, but comments are easier to read if they have capitals and punctuation. Thanks!)

It is funny that I love Chuck in the series.
ReplyDeleteUgh my computer! It doesn't like to work at night these days.
ReplyDelete1. Something Wicked
2. Point of No Return (by the narrowest of margins)
3. Hollywood Babylon
(thousands of other episodes)
4. Frontierland
(thousands more episodes)
5. The Monster at the End of This Book
ugh this one is tough 18th episode of the season had some great episodes but for me
ReplyDelete1. Point of No Return
2. Frontierland
3. Monster at The End of this book
4. Something Wicked
5. Hollywood Babylon
Something Wicked for me too. I actually like the Season 1 a lot because many of the standalone episodes were actually scary/creepy. This episode was great - funny, scary, & touching!
ReplyDeleteyou hated The Monster at the end of this book really i loved it was one of my faves of season 4 i also that the episode something wicked was okay not really that great but not terrible i think point of no return was the best 18th episode IMO
ReplyDeleteI had a hard time choosing between something wicked and point of no return. Had to go with point of no return tho. I guess it's Sam's faith that Dean will do the right thing that wins me over. Of course seeing Zachariah's timely demise is a plus. Loved to hate that guy.
ReplyDeleteme too i wish he would come back but theyve confirmed theres no plans or him to return in season 7
ReplyDeletePoint of No Return for me because it ended the whole emo-Dean phase of Season 5 plus we got to see Zachariah get ganked finally!
ReplyDeleteNext would be Hollywood Babylon because it was hilarious fun and those can be great episodes amdist all the scarier elements.
Then, Something Wicked as it was a pretty good episode from my recollection.
Fourth is Monster at the End of the Book because the idea was kind of lame but executed well, plus I love God...I mean Chuck.
Last is Frontierland as I'm not a fan of westerns and like he said the delivering of the Phoenix's Ashes was pretty bad.
thats a good point but i like the mythology dark story episodes more than the stand alones which is why i probaly like Point of no return/monster at the end of this book/frontierland the best and i know im probaly in the minority who likes mythology episodes better which is why season 1 was my least favourite season still liked season 1 though
ReplyDeletei hated hollywood babylon so much because it was probaly the cheesiest episode ive supernatural ever the episode was so cheesy
ReplyDeletethis is easy!!! point of no return is one of the best episodes!!!
ReplyDeleteOriginally Point of No Return was going to be third for me but after rewatching it, I moved it to second because it was more important to the series than Hollywood Babylon. However, if I were going by which episode I'd rather rewatch, Hollywood Babylon would be in second. Technically, I should probably have stuck with my original ranking.
ReplyDeleteI find season 1 was scarier for me too. I haven't truly been scared by a monster in Supernatural since they turned it into an epic battle of heaven and hell. I miss that.
ReplyDeleteI guess for the second time in a row--I'm sticking with a S1 episode- Something Wicked...there's just something about that season that is just so great. I know that the rest of the seasons have a more interesting and complex storyline and definitely S1 had the most blah episodes out of the bunch (until S6 in my opinion since I STILL don't get what the overall theme of the season was--Is it Castiel going an entire season behind the boys' back and working with Crowley or soulless Sam or is it Eve and her agenda? and what is the Campbells' role in all this...I feel like they had too many storylines and didn't know what to really pick...)
ReplyDeleteZachariah's death took second place in our previous Best Vicarious Death poll. The man was so loathsome that you just had to cheer when Dean shoved that angel knife up his throat.
ReplyDeleteVery good point about Point of No Return. Add that to the plus side of my comment.
ReplyDeletethere were some scariers eps...
ReplyDeleteThe guy from Time is on my side, the girl from season 4 that sam thought it was a ghost and cross the line xD..From season 6 the alpha vamp and castiel in the final was a little scary xD but i know what you say still i prefer this way
The season 6 story line is souls, which encompasses all the threads you mentioned. It's about them being powerful and what people are willing to do to get them or keep them out. Cas was willing to destroy alliances to get them, Crowley was willing to work with angels for his share, Eve was willing to leave her home to protect them, RoboSam was willing to kill Bobby to keep one out, and Death was willing to cryptically hint that they were important, powerful, and mysterious. Plus he got Sam's back so he was willing to go into hell to get it.
ReplyDelete1. Point Of No Return
ReplyDelete2. Frontierland
3. Something Wicked
4. Hollywood Babylon
5.The Monster at the End of This Book (ugh.)
Point of no Return.
ReplyDeleteDean stabbing Zach in the throat was awesome!Dean: 'Word to the wise: don't piss off the nerd angels'. (how prophetic was that in hindsight?) Also:Dean: 'I don’t know if it’s being a big brother or what, but to me, you’ve always been this snot-nosed kid that I’ve had to keep on the straight and narrow. I think we both know that’s not you anymore. I mean, hell, if you’re grown up enough to find faith in me, the least I can do is return the favor. So screw destiny right in the face. I say we take the fight to them and do it our way.'Then comes: Something Wicked
Hollywood Babylon
Frontierland
and last The Monster at t he End of This Book - cuz I cannot stand Chuck
I second your spacing and your Ugh. :-)
ReplyDeleteOh YAAAAAY! I just got the Trickster badge - awesome!
ReplyDeleteIt would be awesome if in the premiere's previouslies they put that Dean quote in - the one about not ticking off Cas. I will laugh until I fall off the bed if that is the case.
ReplyDeleteCongrats! That's a whole lot better than the John level.
ReplyDeleteYeah I really wish they would :D
ReplyDeletei actually love all of these episodes and i have no idea who to vote for
ReplyDeletesomething wicked was epic. for me it was one of those classic supernatural episodes that season 1 has a bunch of. a really evil monster that is killing innocent people that they need to hund down. i liked it when they had different monsters and it was just ghost ghost ghost or demon demon demon.
i loved hollywood babylon, it was hilarious. and i loved it for all the reasons you mentioned, dean as PA, them making fun of their own ideas, and any show where people get sucked into giant fans is funny, even if it is a bit cartoony (anyone ever seen that episode of south park when kenny gets sucked into the giant fan?)
i think its funny and great that a show can laugh at itself and tip their hats to their fans. i liked monster at the end of this book from the first 5 minutes. seeing the boys have to answer a quiz about themselves, and sams hesitationof his own LSAT score. i liked chuck too. what i didn't like in this episode was lillith, i always preferred her as an evil little girl, i think it made her way scarier and i never understood the point of that deal she tried to make with sam.
point of no return, well, it was the 100th episode and it was awesome. dean turning his back on sam and the others was heartwrenching and cas fully attacking dean was just epic, it really showed how much cas had done and often it takes harsh beat downs, both verbal and physical, for dean to realise how much his friends do for him. i don't think i've ever been happier when a vilaain was killed off than i was when dean shoved that sword through zachariah's hed, best moment ever!! and cas fighting the angels and ripping off his shirt to blow them all away was awesome
i liked frontierland. i loved the western theme, deans childishness and the phoenix, although i was sad they had to kill him coz he seemed like one of those not so evil mosnters
but like you dahne, i HATED the ending. i thought it was the stupidest ending of anything i had ever seen and couldn't believe that that was how they had ended it, just too ridiculous.
still not sure who to vote for, i'll come back later
I agree, I did enjoy the darker tone of Season 1 quite a bit, but if it had a better overall arc it could've been much better (not to say it was bad).
ReplyDeleteawesome!!
ReplyDeletei'm still on the balthazar badge
lol got my JW badge and I didn't even realize that I got it until I looked at activities...I was waiting for it too :(
ReplyDeleteIt would be awesome and fantastic if they did this!
ReplyDeleteAgreed, the mytharc was a bit stalled in season 1. I think that's why season 2 is such a favorite. It had the big mytharc but the show still hadn't fallen into the desolation of seasons 4 and 5. They were still allowed to have fun sometimes in season 2.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the explanation. I should have realized that it was about the souls I suppose...
ReplyDeleteI guess that all they could do about it was talk about souls, etc that it didn't make such an powerful impact for me...and it still doesn't explain why the Campbells were in the season...
I would have preferred it if they went with one main soul storyline (i.e Eve is out and about and collecting monster souls) for the entire season with the others interlinking/connecting up to it. I think that it would have been much more understandable at least for me...
yeah exactly. Plus the writer's strike in S3. If there wasn't the strike things might have been different in S4-S5 just maybe...
ReplyDeletethat would be amazing :D
ReplyDeleteI don't know..Help..
ReplyDeleteOkay,I'm gonna start from my least favorite episode and make my way to the top. It's easier to rule episodes out and see where it get's you..
5.Hollywood Babylon.I simply didn't like it and just today, that makes me very happy.
4.Something Wicked.Great episode,I loved it and if it wasn't for the competition in this poll it would be much higher on my list.
3.Frontierland(and I can't believe I have to place it 3rd).I was really excited about this episode and it was everything I was expecting.Sam and Samuel Colt had one of my favorite dialogues,Dean was simply brilliant,we saw an angel fight after a long time and the scene where Cas touches Bobby's soul was awesome!I didn't really mind the ending, but it wan't anything special either,so that's why it's 3rd(I have to rank them somehow)
2.The Monster at the End of This Book(I'm crying here).I have NOTHING bad to say about it.I absolutely loved it.The boys reading about themselves was hilarious and I really like Chuck.Plus, back in season 4,where we didn't know how things will turn out,Cas helping Dean against his orders always made me jump up and down from excitement!
1.Point of No Return. It's the 100th episode(a huge landmark)and it ranks very high in my list of all time favorite episodes.Dean and Sam's conversations were heartbreaking, there was Cas beating the hell out of Dean physically,Bobby doing the same verbally,Cas doing the trick with the sigil(which I never saw coming). The wink! And Zachariah's death.I six years there were three deaths I literally cheered for:Azazel,Ruby and Zachariah! Also, personally I never had a huge problem with Adam.Didn't love him either,I simply accepted his presence. But in this episode,I felt really bad for the poor guy.I know that a lot of people don't like him,but I really want to see him one last time, just to see what happened to him and give him some closure.
And I just realized that I won't be here for the rest of the polls... : (
wow, when you explain it like that it becomes so obvious
ReplyDeletei never really looked at it in that way but its so true, everything really was about the souls!!
i just wished they'd eplained some of it a bit sooner
and season 2. that evil clown from the opening of everybody loves a clown is so SO creepy, it turned me off clowns. i mean, come on, what else is scarier than this terrifying clown standing by the road or outside your window waving it you!!!
ReplyDeletebut that is defiantely why i preffered seasons 1 and 2, the monsters. they just don't compare to all the angel demon crap of like, the last 3 seasons
your ranking has really helped me decide who i'm gonna vote for, you've helped me narrow it down to 2, PoNR and MatEoTB which both just come above the other 3 because i really love all of them
ReplyDeletenow i just have to pick a number one :D
I had a really hard time deciding between Point of Nor Return and Monster at the End of this Book... I finally went for MatEotB... I just love Chuck and his whole nervous reaction around the guys is fabulous. "It's a Misery Thing"... loved it.
ReplyDeleteThat's a good point, mind if I use that for my reasoning for why I like Season 2 the best? I still really like Season 4 and 5 but the fact that there is so much despair/gloom in those seasons kind of dampers them a bit. Although, I did love the final minute of the Season 3 finale and the opening sequence of Dean being brought back in the Season 4 premiere.
ReplyDeleteThis is completely off topic, but I'm curious how to pronounce Dahne. The way I keep thinking is Day-nuh.
Point of No Return
ReplyDeleteAll the plot of the season is connected with what Cass did to stop the apocalypse from happening again..
ReplyDeleteFirst he ressurects Sam, without a soul.
Then he does an alliance with Crowley, he comes with the plan of searching purgatory and brings back samuel to do it.
They start killing alphas, asking questions to them.
Eve see this and freak outs because she liked the natural order.
So she and the alphas stars to creating more monsters so all the souls come to purgatory and crowley and castiel don't get any souls....
So yeah is all about the power of the soul...
Dawn, like morning, which will be here in 3 hours. Ugh, I have to get some sleep. :-)
ReplyDeleteI have massive problems with the end of season 4 and all of season 5 because it was one big disappointment or angst fest or guilt trip after another. I always like Supernatural better than any other show but there were times when I looked forward to Burn Notice or other shows just to get a break from the utter despair that permeated Supernatural in those seasons. That's why I like season 6 so much. It gave me as a viewer a chance to lay some of those burdens down and just enjoy the ride.
The clown is fucking scary!!!
ReplyDeleteI've never had clown fear but that scene where the dad wakes up to the clown standing over him holding his son's hand freaked me out big time.
ReplyDeleteI think fewer story lines would have made the season better too. As for the Campbells, they needed a hunter who could track down the Alphas to get the souls. Enter Grandpa Creepy and his esoteric knowledge he didn't bother sharing with the rest of the world. The other Campbells came along as a package deal. My take is that RoboSam came back first and Cas or Crowley led GC to Sam so that they could really get the soul machine going. Mostly though I think the Campbells were a mistake.
ReplyDeleteWe'll miss you while you are gone, but on the plus side, you don't have to rank the finales. :-) I also find it a relief in these polls when there are episodes I don't like. How strange is that! If you add John, my list of deaths I cheered out loud for is the same. Happy dance at the end of each one of them.
ReplyDeleteWhat was your favorite scene in Point of No Return?
ReplyDeleteJohn!?!?As in John Winchester??Really!?!
ReplyDeleteI take it you didn't like him then...
4th Hollywood Babylon
ReplyDeleteThere was nothing wrong with the episode on a whole but I found it unexciting and a little too "first time meta" for me.
3rd TMatTheEofT B
Although I hated the part about the Supernatural books and Winchester gospels and the blatant fan involvment, there were some bits and pieces that redeemed it for me .
I loved how the boys tried to do the opposite of the prophesies........ Dean with the tofu 'burger, .............
tryng not to argue with Sam,......... the band-aids and the car crash,........the laundry scene (such a moment of normality for them ), ....... Sam's confession to Chuck about the demon blood, ...... Castiel's unauthorized help with Lilith and Dean trying to convince Chuck to man up and come help him save Sam at the end, etc..
2nd Something Wicked.
The story was interesting. We got to see a not so flattering John moment. Poor little Dean!
Lots of brotherly bonding and Sam with his cute Dinosaur tee.shirt gets me every time!
1st Point of No Return
First of all for the sheer amount of content the episode had; there wasn't a lull in the story telling.
Poor Adam. I feel a little sorry for the character--he just seems so superfluous somehow.
However I hope he gets a closure in some way and gets out of the cage.
There is just too much going on to talk about it, so suffice to say that Zachariah went out in a "blaze of glory" by the hand of ( "weapon of heaven? angel? righteous man? ) Dean!!! Superlative!!!!!!!!
Now that is a perfectly reasonable reasoning for your liking Season 6 over Season 4-5. I respect that and can see where you're coming from. Personally, still unsure if they should've continued past Season 5 because I loved the finale of that season and thought it a fitting end. Some of Season 6 to me felt like fan-fiction which annoyed me and the points we've talked about with missed opportunities of ganking Raphael annoyed me as well. Still, the fact the brothers were brothers again was a nice thing of Season 6.
ReplyDelete1. Frontierland
ReplyDelete2. The Monster At The End of This Book
3. Something Wicked

5. Hollywood Babylon
The Monster at the End of This Book
ReplyDeleteHollywood Babylon
Something Wicked
Point of No Return
Frontierland
Chuck is awesome.
I tried to get into Frontierland, and I just couldn't do it. I did however get a giggle out of the Back to the Future moment with the phone and the ashes. Overall, I just didn't dig the episode.
This one is hard, but I'll have to go with Something Wicked, I love the 1st season in general. Then The Monster at the End of this Book, I really enjoyed this episode, besides, Chuck is awesome.
ReplyDelete1.Something Wicked
2.The Monster at the End of this Book
3.Point of No Return
4.Hollywood Babylon
5.Frontierland
I'm really torn here. I LOVE SW, MATEOTB, and PONR and I like Frontierland a lot. The only one am less keen on was HB. Unusually I don't agree with you here Dahne. I have no problem with Adam, and I really don't get what others object to about him. I love the meta stuff and thought the concept and execution of Monster was superb. The end of F was cool I thought and a nice little ref to the back to the future films.
ReplyDeleteIn the end I sadly have to chose between 2 of my all time, top 10, favourite eps; SW and PONR. Both incredibly important for the brothers relationship, both brilliant stories, both really moving. In the end I have gone for PONR, because of the context. It marked the final end of the chapter of the show where the boys relationship was strained. A period I absolutely loathed. So PONR it is.
I'm not voting! I'M NOT I TELL YOU!!!!
ReplyDeleteSeriously I can't choose between any of those. I consider them equally good.
Voted for "Point of no Return", definitely the best of those.
ReplyDeletecompletely agree! Maybe if they did (or stuck with one main soul story with the rest interlinking...) than it would have been so much clearer
ReplyDeleteHa! Guess I missed that poll. To bad for me. Lol.
ReplyDeleteI agree, the emo-dean thing was hard to watch.
ReplyDeletefewer story lines would deffinately have been better. the problem was that they opened them all up relatively early (maybe not some of them) did absolutely nothing to solve any of them for a while and then got rid of each of them within the space of one, maybe 2 episodes. as a whole i liked the season but i did not like the jumpy storylines
ReplyDeletei never really had a fear either but that clown scene is nightmare worthy
ReplyDeleteSo, it was a really tough decision, much harderthan yesterday's because, instead of simply liking the episodes but them not being near my faves, I really love all of today's choices and I know it's only going to get harder with these last 4 episode positions.
ReplyDeleteIn the end, I went with monster at the end of this book, because although I love all of these, I think I've rewatched this one the most. But it only just beat out point of no return by. A VERY small margin and it pained me to make that decision
I was right about the later polls being harder. Every 1 of those episodes is one of my favorites of those seasons. I went with Point of No Return though because, come on, it was the 100th episode and it kicked ass. If we could pick two, I would have voted for Frontierland b/c it was epically hilarious
ReplyDeletei'm gonna go with ... Point of no return
ReplyDeleteOk Dahne, this is where we come to odds and your intense hatred for certain things makes me worry about you (not that I haven't had my own moments of pure anger at certain parts of this series) but here's my ranking:
ReplyDelete1 POINT OF NO RETURN - The scene with Bobby marked this episode as one of my favorites. There's the issue of Adam becoming so important to the story that irks me, but everyone telling off Dean put him back in the mentality that he needed to be in, and I always loved the early scene with Castiel slaying all those angels.
2 SOMETHING WICKED - This episode introduced us to Young Sam & Dean, and the shtriga which was a great monster. There were some good one-liners (from the hotel owner's kid no less!) and we got that hysterical scene with the old lady "I was sleepin' with mah peepers open!"
3 THE MONSTER AT THE END OF THIS BOOK - Now, unlike Dahne, when I saw this episode I thought it practically blew my mind. Just the whole prophet thing. There were things that made me worry like the further introduction of things like the Winchester gospel (I mean WTF?) and the way it complicated the story line a bit, but I still really enjoy this episode.
4 FRONTIERLAND - I loved this episode. I loved how everyone kept calling them "clean" and the phoenix was a cool "monster?" the ending of the episode was not that bad at all. What I don't like is how in 1 episode they find the exact thing they need to destroy the mother of all monsters. :(
5 HOLLYWOOD BABYLON - I enjoy this episode but I've never thought it was anything special.
1-Moster At The End Of This Book-This episode is just awesome, not a fan of Chuck but the stuff with Lilith was chilling, I think it will go down as one of the best written episodes of the show ever.
ReplyDelete2-Point Of No Return-loved it, Sam was just amazing in the episode, Cas came through and Dean even pulled his head out of his own ass finally. It was nice to have Adam back and Zach and it had Bobby. Just an all round great episode.3-Something Wicked-one of my favourite episodes ever, its sweet and full of great brotherly moments plus Weechesters and JDM4-Frontierland-Ok but not great, I actually found it a bit try hard and somewhat pointless5-Hollywood Babylon-I've maybe bothered to watch this episode 2 times over the years. it was just boring.
I had a really hard time deciding between Monster and Point of No Return, but ended with voting for Monster. I just thought it was very original, and Chuck being a profit was funny, as was the meta references about the fans. I also loved the face-to-face between Lileth and Sam and the dynamics between Sam and Dean.
ReplyDeletePoint of No Return was also great. I loved the mystery around Adam climbing out the grave, loved the pissed off nerd angel, loved the twists, and loved Sam taking control and showing faith in Dean when Dean admitted that he wouldn't have done the same for Sam, and Dean recognizing that.
Third would have been Hollywood Babylon. I think it's one of the funniest SPN episodes. Loved Dean as a PA.
Fourth would have been Fronteirland. Also a very good episode, but it's not one I feel compelled to watch over and over again.
Fifth would have been Something Wicked. I liked this episode and liked the kid, but it was up against tough competition.
For me it's ''Something Wicked''. I've always loved that episode.
ReplyDelete1. Point of No Return
ReplyDelete2. Frontierland
3. Monster at The End of this book
4. Hollywood Babylon
5. Something Wicked
For me:
ReplyDeleteFrontierland
Point of No Return
Something Wicked
The Monster at the End of this Book
Hollywood Babylon
The Monster at the End of This Book is my favorite episode of all of Supernatural, so I have to rate it first. After that I'd probably say Frontierland, then Point of No Return, then Something Wicked, and finally Hollywood Babylon.
ReplyDeleteI WONT NO! kill me !... well no not that hard. Didnt like Frontierland THAT much soooo.... Point of No return it is :D close with tMatEotB
ReplyDelete"The Monster At The End Of This Book." The others are way down on the list for me. If I had to put the rest in order:
ReplyDeletePoint of No Return
Frontierland
Something Wicked
Hollywood Babylon
My computer has now completely died so I am not sure that I can get the new poll up tonight. We may have a one day split before continuing. Sorry.
ReplyDeleteI was skeptical about season 6 since Kripke clearly had a 5 year plan. However, if it had ended on such a depressing year as 5 I would have been very disappointed. I'm hoping with a tighter focus for season 7, we will get a dream season like season 2.
ReplyDeleteIt was during the midseason hiatus last December. We try to do polls and other things whenever there is a hiatus because they make the time feel at least a little shorter.
ReplyDeletePersonally, I think Mitch Pileggi's role was wasted from In the Beginning on. He needed to be a character that made sense to bring back. Grandpa Creepy's resurrection was a bad idea from the start.
ReplyDeleteThat did make me laugh, mostly because Misery still freaks me out.
ReplyDeleteHa! I'm used to people disagreeing with me. I do like how PoNR ended the brother strain. That's another reason why it ultimately took the second spot for me.
ReplyDeleteSorry to have strained you. Not voting sometimes works best for me too. So instead of voting, how about tell what you liked about these episodes?
ReplyDeleteWhat did you like best about Point of No Return?
ReplyDeleteThey did a great job with their 100th episode. It was at a point when everything was depressing me so I was worried when it originally aired. Instead, it ended up being one of the better episodes of the season.
ReplyDeleteFor being at odds, I agree with much of what you say. Bobby rocked in PoNR, Michael rocked in SW, the Winchester gospel was definitely out there, and the phoenix being able to kill Mother was way too easy. I agree with all of that.
ReplyDelete1. Point of No Return
ReplyDelete2. Frontierland
3. Hollywood Babylon
4. The Monster at the End of this Book
5. Something Wicked
I couldn't agree more...It never made any sense to me when I heard that they were bringing him back...
ReplyDeletef the Moon placed second with 100 votes for 26%. My predictions weren't so good for the 17th episode so far though
ReplyDelete1. Something Wicked - Shtriga was a creepy a** monster & it went after kids; Michael, he reminds me of Dean; Dean's interactions with Michael (he's so great with kids); Weechesters flashbacks in B&W; gave me another reason to want to punch John in his face
ReplyDelete2. Point of No Return - Sam admits he was wrong for running away; Bobby's verbal smack down; Cas's physical smack down; the wink; Zach stabbed in the neck; talk at the end
*Con - I REALLY dislike Adam story line & wished he was never brought in; no Impala
3 & 4 can switch places depending on my mood
3. Frontierland - Jensen's joy radiated off the screen; Sam & Sam Colt's interaction; Dean as a sheriff (little boy's dream come true)
*Con - hated the ending, it was just stupid
4. Hollywood Babylon - It was funny; Dean as a PA; Dean's excitement over meeting actors/actresses
*Con - several gross scenes, including the fan
way later.....
5. Monster at the End ... - funny in parts
*Cons - Chuck (I am not a fan), Lilith as an adult was not as creepy,
wow this one is a toughy!
ReplyDelete1.Point of No Return
2.The Monster at the End of This Book
3.Frontierland
4.Something Wicked
5.Hollywood Babylon
You're not the only one. I love Chuck too, and wouldn't mind seeing him again.
ReplyDelete1. PONR- Dean killing Zachariah was a highlight of the episode. I didn't like Castiel's beatdown of Dean like others. That scene always makes me cringe. However, I did love Sam's faith in Dean, which lead to the wink and Zachariah's death. Also, I had no problem with Adam, but now I'm starting to.
ReplyDelete2. MATEOTB- I thought this episode was funny. The scene in when they're in the laundromat and Dean is reading about himself sitting in a laundromat reading about himself. Also, I loved Chuck.
3. Hollywood Babylon- I really liked this episode. It made me laugh, and the over all story was interesting. It's not my favorite ever, but I don't mind re-watching it. I loved PA Dean.
4.Something Wicked- I thought this episode was pretty decent. I'm usually a sucker for any
episodes featuring a young Dean and Sam.
5. Frontierland- It's not my favorite episode, but it had some good moments. Dean as Sheriff, and geeking out over cowboy related things. It was nice to see Dean smile. I also loved that you could tell how much Jensen enjoyed making this episode. However, I didn't really like Sam and Samuel Colt's scenes. I thought they were way too long. it's not an episode that I would watch over and over again.
Point of No Return gets my vote.
ReplyDeleteExactly, no Kripke and going past the 5 year plan worried me a lot. I'm with you that if Season 7 has a tighter focus and resembles the first 2 seasons more, it should be great and be back on track.
ReplyDeleteHere's hoping!
I cannot believe how many of these polls I've missed! But since I love those polls and discussions so much, let me just say what I would've voted for.
ReplyDeleteepisode 13 (in general, pretty weak ones to chose from) - After School Special
episode 14 (again, not my favourites) - My Bloody Valentine
episde 15 (tough one, considering how much I love Death Takes a Holiday) - The French Mistake
episode 16 (an obvious choice and one of my favourites ever) - On the Head of a Pin
episode 17 (even though I loved My Heart Will Go On) - 99 Problems
and finally, this poll:
I must say, 18th episodes are really good ones.
Something Wicked will always have a warm spot in my heart for the amazing flashbacks and bringing even more spice to the relationship between John and the boys. The kid Dean from this episode never fails to break my heart, John is a jerk, Michael is a sweet kid and a great brother. The first mini Dean of the show, I'd say. And the shtriga was a great MOTW.
I just love The Monster at the End of this Book, it's funny, mysterious and tense, all in one. I've always loved Chuck, it has amazing Dean-Cas scenes (as many other season 4 episodes) and gives us the beginning of the plot twist with Lilith.
Point of No Return was awesome. A great 100th episode. Loved how Sam became the one who believed and wanted to keep fighting and how Cas reminded Dean how much he had to sacrifice and how both of them and Bobby kept trying to make Dean not give up. Although, as many season 5 episodes, it was a little bit too heavy. And I agree with Dahne, Adam is the low point.
Frontierland - well, not a Wild West fan here, so it didn't really impress me. I'd even say it was rather boring. Perhaps I just had too big expectations after I found out Samuel Colt was gonna be in this one.
And I gotta say, I don't remember much about Hollywood Babylon. I seriously gotta rewatch a huge part of season 2.
So, all things considered, my vote goes to... damn, it's really hard to decide, it's between Something Wicked and TMATEOTB.
But I'm gonna go for Something Wicked, because it's one of my very favourite episodes of the early SPN. And it was Apocalypse-free, all about the family drama. And saving people, hunting things, family business.
Season 3 was shaping up to be my favorite right until the writer's strike. Then they ruined it when they came back. 4 episodes and they wasted 3 of them. Such a pity.
ReplyDeleteI'm hoping to lose the brother angst for both brothers next season. I know that's not in the cards but that's my wishful thinking - no cursed coin involved.
ReplyDeleteIt's nice to see the love for season 1 in these polls. Generally I think it gets short shifted in favor of the latter seasons. Personally, some of my favorite episodes are in season 1.
ReplyDeleteI agree that the farther into the season we go the harder it seems to vote. There were some tough ones before the Best Show competition but now much more so.
ReplyDeleteWelcome to SpoilerTV Jeffrey. Thanks for voting and sharing your choice. Something Wicked is one of my favorites too.
ReplyDeleteWelcome to SpoilerTV Mikaeru. Thanks for sharing your ranking.
ReplyDeleteHi Apryl, welcome to SpoilerTV. Thanks for sharing.
ReplyDeleteGlad a decision didn't kill you. :-P Point of No Return looks like it will be the overall winner.
ReplyDeleteHa! We both have about the same reasoning for why we liked or didn't like each episode. Glad I'm not the only one who feels like punching John whenever he's on the screen.
ReplyDeleteI was less than overjoyed at the Cas beat down also, but it did show a Castiel losing control. I am choosing to consider this foreshadowing at this point, but that is likely my own version of a retcon.
ReplyDeleteWe missed your discussion also. Glad you are back. Michael will also have a soft spot in my heart because he was the original miniDean. I keep hoping we get him back someday. Maybe as a young hunter?
ReplyDeletethe hellatus is turning me into a bit of a dramaqueen :D Dyig dying inside, need tv now
ReplyDeletei just got a Bathalzar badge...is that good?
ReplyDeletehonestly one of the most fun things about these polls is finding out which of my favorite episodes Dahne disliked...nay...hated. :-)
I won't necessarily go to the mat over Chuck but given the addition of angels to the universe...a prophet and his books made me chuckle AND I STILL WANT THE SHOW TO SELL THAT ART WORK.
that said....I didn't pick it. I had to pick Something Wicked...so much goodness...the we got Winchester back story...including a key to Dean's character. the monster kind of creeped me out. It just worked on many levels for me. So, my final order is...
Something Wicked
Hollywood Babylon
The Monster At the End of the Book
Point of No Return -- memory is a little vague content-wise but I do know that I realized the Adam fix
the moment we discovered that Dean was Michael's vessel... but I think the fact
that I remember almost every moment of my first three choices and almost
nothing abou this ep says something.
Frontierland -- this ep felt to me like they were so concerned with the gags than with a tight story. But
I did like that the Phoenix wasn't a monster...just an angry husband seeking revenge.
I had a big long comment and then FF crashed on me before I could post so I'll just put my order which is definitely going to be in the minority of people and leave it at that for now. Maybe I'll get around to posting my reasons later.
ReplyDelete1. the Monster At the End of This Book - In my top 3 all time fav episodes, I adore this episode, SPN at it's best and meta is always fun for me.
2. Frontierland - I was nearly torn to vote for this as my number 1 because it was super good in my book especially as the end of their homages to the Back To The Future trilogy. It worked in that fun, homage, kitschy kind of way.
3. Hollywood babylon - Fun episode, some great lines
4. Something Wicked - Wee!chesters!
5. Point of No return - Honestly hated it (again this puts me in the minority) as i saw it as entirely against his character for dean to even consider running off and saying yes. It was far better when he gave the team free will speech and stuck to it. Only good part of the ep was Zachariah explaining how messed up Sam and Dean are to Adam, and Zach finally dying. Also they sly little wink Dean gave to Sam who loved so very hurt and broken thinking his brother had given up all hope was just Winchester gold. A look that said a thousand words. but otherwise I thought the whole premise of the episode sucked and was not really the best writing or story for a major arc episode.
Very true...
ReplyDeleteI'm glad my opinions are causing you to chuckle. I dislike several episodes and hate a few. TMatEotB is one I hate. :-) It sounds like we don't always agree though because I think Something Wicked was awesome as well. And yes, the Balthazar badge is good.
ReplyDeleteBelieve me I understand computer problems - as I am typing on a borrowed laptop waiting to find out how much fixing my computer is going to cost me. UGH! Technology is fabulous....when it works. Our opinions are opposite this time. While I understand the ending to Frontierland was a hat tip to Back to the Future, I still think it was a huge cop-out and the worse thing they could have done. They already paid homage to Back to the Future with the Delorean comment and this season really, really needed a solid win for the Winchesters. To trash that for a lame ending irked me to no end. I'll agree to disagree.
ReplyDeleteThese episodes were hard for me to chose between... here are my standings tho... such as they are, and they are subject to change at the slightest whim... just because im weird... lol
ReplyDelete1. Point of no return... simply because it was the end of Zachariah... he was so pompous and self absorbed that by the time Dean shoved that angel blade through his jaw i was ready to jump through the screen and do it myself... if i could have... i dont have a problem with adam though, so him being in this episode was a plus for me... the fact that he was given the chance to get to know the boys and realize that even if he didnt consider them family (at first) that they considered him family and would have been there for him if they had known... it just showed exactly how strong their ties are, blood or not...
From here though... its very difficult because some of them i dont remember all of the finer points of them... but here goes...
2. Something Wicked - This monster was one of the scariest to me, plus it was the introduction of the young-chesters... it establishes the idea that Dean has been more than looking out for a kid brother for most of his life... he has practically raised Sam while trying to grow up himself... and even though im the younger sibling... i can empathize...
3. Hollywood Babylon - This episode is only marginally behind Something Wicked and only slightly above TMatEoTB... but the comedy through the entire episode won it for me... i loved watching Dean as the PA and the constant snacking and the in-jokes... the way that it mocked the film industry was hilarious and so on it is definitely one i thoroughly enjoy when i watch through the second season...
4. The Monster at the End of This Book - I actually enjoy the episodes with Chuck... im not certain why... but i like the meta episodes... and (as i mentioned in the previous poll about Heart) even though the chick bugged me with her 20 Questions to make sure 'her boys wouldn't be made fun of'... the way that it kinda hit that somethings are just meant to happen was a bit of foreshadowing in how some things are supposed to play out through the season...
5. Frontierland - The main thing that bothered me about this episode was the delivery of the ashes... i mean... they could have gotten a little more creative, like finding a letter in the house that led to where he hid them so long ago or something... but a package that had to be delivered that far in the future... there is no way it would have been kept for that long at any post office... it almost says to me that they were ready to end the episode and just didnt know how so they rushed it...
Again... it was really hard to decide... and the ranks are subject to change depending on my mood and what season ive been watching and whether or not my memory has been working correctly... lol
Something Wicked: Backstory! And JDM :D ! And a brilliant scary MotW.
ReplyDeleteHollywood Babylon: Everything about it. The whole Hollywood parody. Dean being an awesome PA. Creepy ghosts. "Monsters I get, people are crazy" moto in action yet again. The Gilmore Girls shoutout. etc...
Moster at the end: Chuck for one. The meta (Personally I've reached a point where I think they have a tendency to overdo it on the show with the meta, but this was a time and an episode when I didn't think so. The scene in the laundromat alone is gold). And lastly my icky "I hate (like Hate HATE not "love to hate") Zachariah and I need him gone NOW" feeling was solidified. That coupled with the fact that he did die and the way he died gives me vindication for that moment of epiphany.
Point of no Return: Zachariah's death! That alone is enough but there is some great brothers, Bobby, Castiel and other moments that make it totally brilliant.
Frontierland: Cowboys! And Samuel Colt. (though I kinda felt really sorry for the phoenix).
I didn’t vote in this poll because I was too conflicted but
ReplyDeleteI would have ranked SW and HB at the bottom of episode 18’s not because they
weren’t solid episodes but because neither advanced the storyline as much as
some S1 and S2 episodes.
I really liked TMATEOTB and that’s probably the episode I would
have *settled on* had I voted even though I liked *most of* PONR and Frontierland
more, but both eps had content *problems* as you said (though somewhat
different from my POV than yours) and that made me uneasy voting for either of them.
I had no objections to Adam in PONR; to me it would have
been unrealistic for Dean to say “Yes” at that point and have Dean be “Michael”
for the rest of the season – or alternatively have Dean say yes with more
conditions to buy time (until the end of the season). (I’m not a fan who feels Adam
“stole” Dean’s storyline either). “Michael” made it clear enough in TSRTS that
Dean was his “true” vessel BUT not his only vessel so Michael getting Adam to
say yes (after temporarily trapping all three boys in the green room) was more
than acceptable to me, although I *realize* not all fans agree with this.
My major problem with PONR was Castiel’s brutally beating
Dean (when he could just have put him back to sleep) ranting like a jealous abusive,
girlfriend (“I gave up everything for youuuu! And this is how you repay me,
me, me?!!!”) and by Sam and Bobby’s lack of reaction once Cas said he did it. (As
as aside, tt makes me very, very uneasy that Cas’s action [and the rest of TFW’s
just shrugging it off] may foreshadow Dean’s [potential lack of] reaction to
the aftermath of Cas’s tearing down Sam’s wall to get Dean off his back, and
that Dean will focus more on Cas’s betrayal of them with Crowley [as he did with
Sam’s betrayal with Ruby]. I’m putting opening Purgatory/dealing with Godstiel
in a separate class because obviously that’s the larger issue.)
My problem with Frontierland (I did enjoy most of the
episode and Guy Bee did a marvelous job with capturing the old west atmosphere)
was the precept that Sam and Dean were going to get the phoenix ash no matter
what, once they identified a "Phoenix". Dabb/Lolfin gave him a
murdered human wife, framed and hanged the “unkillable” Phoenix for his wife’s
murder, then had him kill those responsible for her death (not for hanging him)
to make SamnDean seem marginally more justified in killing him. Dean dangled
the deputy as bait without even knowing what he did to piss off the Phoenix.
The harsh truth is the way the show set the plot up is they would have killed the Phoenix, a
normally harmless creature, for his ash no matter what and that doesn’t make
the boys very heroic in my eyes. Once they read in the journals that Phoenix
ash was effective against the Mother, they were laser focused on obtaining the
ash and they knew from Colt’s journal that The Colt had killed a Phoenix and
that signed his death warrant.
I didn’t have any
problems with the “ending” ending though; I thought it was very a clever thing
for Samuel Colt to do, besides being a great homage to “Back to the Future.”
He gets no points from me for saddling Dean with a horrifying demand (save Sam or kill him) without giving him any information about why he needs to or how and then leaving him to shoulder the burden alone while trying to figure out what the heck John was talking about. Horrid father, horrid person. Even soldiers are given a battle plan when heading into a fight.
ReplyDeleteI think that it was the writers who just wanted a storyline to bring back Mitch Pileggi to play Grandpa Creepy again. It could have been such a fantastic storyline and it is a shame that it never went anywhere...
ReplyDeleteCan't say I disagree with you..Home is the episode where he appears at the end isn't it?Well,he pissed me off because Sam and Dean were trying to find him so desperately and it kinda looked like his was toying with them..
ReplyDeleteBut he gained points when he gave his life for Dean,so I was sad when he died.
However,I'm definitely not one of the fans that desperately want him back(even though I really like JDM).His story had a fitting conclusion and it would be great to leave it at that..
Have to agree with you here. he made the boys' life miserable just for the sake of his personal vendetta. ( If it was even for that! )
ReplyDeleteDying for Dean was the least he could have done!!
I forgot about Opposite Day in TMatEotB. That was a tiny ray of sunshine in it. Still, not enough to keep it off my worst list. :-)
ReplyDeleteI believe the phrase "sucks out loud" was coined to describe John Winchester. I disliked him by Home but when he didn't even call in Faith (or afterwards according to Salvation) it turned to absolute loathing. I cheered so loudly when John died in IMToD that the people in my house came running to see what was wrong.
