Game of Thrones - George R.R. Martin Q&A on Google HQ

Here's a great live Q&A broadcast by Google HQ. This is the full transcript for now... The video is down now that's it's over, but should be uploaded to Youtube soon(and will be updated on this page soon after).

Two notes:

**If you want the transcript in chronological order hit the "oldest" button at the top right of the transcript. It seems to default to newest comment first.

**There is some discussion about the later books. So non-readers or readers not caught up to A Dance with Dragons yet be warned.

Though he's just birthed the mammoth thousand-page tome "A Dance With Dragons," fantasy author George R. R. Martin isn't slowing down. With another two volumes promised before the epic "A Song of Ice and Fire" concludes, and a second season of Emmy-nominated show Game of Thrones (named after the first book) on the way, fans are still clamoring for more blood, sex, violence and dragons.

For those who want more Martin now, Google has planned an event that will whet appetites. The Authors@Google program, which brings writers to the Googleplex to chat informally with Googlers, will broadcast their conversation with Martin live, as he answers questions submitted by fans all over the world.

Watch the talk here at 12 p.m. PST, or follow along for our liveblog, so you can catch every last word about what's happening in Westeros.

  1. Interesting to see he writes 500 pages a year (in a good year)....

That would mean a likely 2 years minimum for each of the next books if they are similar in size. add in the added "distractions" of writing Game of Throne episodes, press tours for his books and the TV series and of course Emmy Awards acceptance speeches and I think 3 years per book is being hopeful.

I was never a Three Stooges fan, but now I feel the need to go back and read AGoT to see if I can spot Larry, Moe and Curly,,, Ha! XD

  2. I think he say somewhere that there 100 pages of stuff he moved into next book rather than ADWD. I think 3 years is good guess for next book.

I liked the bit on how he based the religion in the book on various real religion, never occur to me until I read it, but it seen so obvious.

  3. I read something about a lot moved to the next book too and it does make sense since so many of the POVs ended in cliffhangers. I'm hoping for 3 years on The Winds of Winter and then maybe a little longer for A Dream of Spring.

Part of me thinks the hard part .. GRRM's "Mareenese Knot" is worked out now and the next two books should take fewer versions and rewrites and not take as long overall...IT may actually be possible to get to the under three years per book realm again.

The other part of me thinks he is overwhelmed by the pressure of living up to expectations (his own and fans) he didn't have for the first three books, dealing with a host of characters and plots he didn't have in the early books...so every future book will take longer to write and streamline.

  4. It looks like HBO is hoping to finish the entire saga... or at least has no season limit planned.

  5. Surprised to hear that it still only 10 episode per season, it will be hard to cover book 2 in the time length as the books only get bigger and bigger. But look like there not willing to expand it so I don't think they catch up with GRRM,

  6. I have just finish a ASWD last night so, I would be delighted and hoping for the next one in three years.

I think he has resolved the Mareenese Knot, but some of that might be optimums on my part.

  7. @sycarroll:disqus I felt the same way when I finished it. I was happy and thought it was all set up nicely for the next book. So I'm hopeful too honestly.

It's just his statements on the press tour have made me think. Then again, If I were him and made the statement that this book would be out in about a year and it took 6.... well I might be overly cautious when I gave answers too.
