Breaking Bad - Season 5 being the last season is getting more and more likely

It's not exactly news, but I thought it was worth mentioning that Vince Gilligan (the brilliant mind behind Breaking Bad) got interviewed by the New York Times recently and once again, he talked about how it's pretty sure that Breaking Bad will end next season.

Mr. Gilligan admitted the show cannot go on much longer. Although he’s changed his mind in the past, he now thinks the show should end after 5 seasons, if for no other reason than to honor the integrity of the experiment :

“This was never intended to be an open-ended show. As creators of the show, we have to see it through to the end, to finish what we started. I will be sad the day Breaking Bad ends, but the worst thing that could happen, and I learned this from experience on The X Files, is to reach a peak and then be on the long slow decline. It's better to leave a party too soon than to stay too late".

  1. I love this. So much. Keeping the integrity of the show is perfect.
(However, having fewer AMC shows on air makes me sad)

  2. What a great guy, he just gets it. Brilliant, intelligent, honest and humble. A role-model for showrunners.

  6. I'm glad for what Vince Gilligan said. Breaking Bad is my favorite series on air, and of course I would be sad to see it end, but as he said, it's better to leave us early but on a high note than later in a slow and painful decline.
I also hope that AMC will just be ok with his decision to end the show and won't force him to go on further, but since they've basically been doing whatever he has said them to do so far, I don't think it's gonna be an issue.

  7. I'm confident AMC will not intervene. Recently read an article where the AMC president said their original programming is all about the show's creators' vision and that's the most important thing on AMC.
It's also one of the reasons why AMC so far mostly got stronger in later seasons whereas most other shows' first season is often the best one. AMC requires their (possible) show runners to completely map out season 1 and plan ahead for future seasons (also when they are only pitching pilots).

That said, I think 5 seasons of Breaking Bad are enough. It's not the type of show that can go on forever and 5 seasons sound like a perfect deal.

  8. I enjoy shows much more who have a beginning, middle and end like LOST managed. 5 seasons seem like a good deal to me. Argh, still have to start watching Breaking Bad.
