A recent Study by german TV-Industry Site Meedia revealed, that CBS's CSI Miami is the most watched american TV-Series in Germany (audience 14 - 49 years), followed by House M.D., Bones, The Mentalist and NCIS.

  1. These shows are also big in France ! but honestly i think there are popular because 1: good shows and 2: because there are on the main channels (TF1 AND M6) and these channels promote the shows.

  2. I am forever baffled by the continuing popularity of CSI: Miami.  I would go into detail as to why but that would violate Spoiler TV's new mandate against destructive criticism.  :)

  3. Shows like CSI Miami are popular because they're easy to sell abroad, to air and re-air. 90% of the population doesn't expect more from a TV show. It goes for the USA, France, Germany and most countries, that's why CBS is so popular in the US, and that's why their shows are big elsewhere as well.

No matter what country you live in, copshows with a defined structure (42 minutes to find the culprit, no matter what happened in the previous episode that aired the week before, no matter what happens in the next episode), they just work ratings-wise.

I'd like to see Curb your Enthusiasm on primetime on a free access channel in France but I know that will never happen because it's a "segmenting" show. CSI Miami isn't segmenting, it reaches everyone.

However I don't know anyone my age watching the CSI franchise or the NCIS franchise. I find it weird that CSI Miami is so popular on the german key-demo, the audience is probably more around 40 than 20 years old.

On the other hand, House and Bones are big on people around 18 though, everyone I know watch these shows, because they're easy to follow, because most people don't go on the internet and find out about more TV shows and because they have the greatest exposure. Sure, shows more demanding like Breaking Bad and Fringe do air in France, but respectively on a documentary channel (Arte) and at 11pm (TF1). You can't expect people to watch them massively given the conditions. I didn't find out about them while watching TV, it's all coming from the computer.
