One day, nobody dies. All across the world, nobody dies. And then the next day, and the next, and the next, people keep ageing – they get hurt and sick, but they never die. The result: a population boom, overnight.
With all the extra people, resources are finite. It’s said that in four month's time, the human race will cease to be viable. But this can’t be a natural event – someone’s got to be behind it. It’s a race against time as CIA agent Rex Matheson investigates a global conspiracy. The answers lie within an old, secret British institute. As Rex keeps asking: "What is Torchwood?", he’s drawn into a world of adventure, and a threat to change what it means to be human ... for ever.
In the launch episode of Torchwood: Miracle Day, Agent Rex Matheson is impaled in a car crash and miraculously survives, while his analyst, Esther Drummond, sets out to discover what Torchwood is. Far away, in Wales, Gwen Cooper lives in hiding with her husband Rhys and daughter Anwen – she’s the last surviving Torchwood member and is determined to stay hidden. In Kentucky, convicted murderer Oswald Danes survives his own execution. And when Esther meets the mysterious Captain Jack Harkness, assassins are activated to kill them all...

"And when Esther meets the mysterious Captain Jack Harkness, assassins are activated to kill them all..."
ReplyDeleteHow can they send assassins to kill them if no one can die anymore?
Miracle Day for everyone else. Just a normal day for Jack Harkness.
ReplyDeleteI don't even want to think about how decapitation would(or wouldn't) work in this scenario.
ReplyDeleteLove that! Unless it doesn't affect Jack, he dies, just doesn't stay dead. One of the press releases mentioned that Jack finds that he's the most vulnerable person on Earth.
ReplyDeleteSPOILERS AHEAD!!!
ReplyDeleteIt's already confirmed that Jack apparently will be suddenly mortal now: http://scifimafia.com/2011/06/torchwood-spoiler-you-never-thought-captain-jack-harkness-would-do-this/
Actually Jack normally heals when he is injured, after Miracle day people hover and remained injured or near death.... they don't heal.
ReplyDeleteI still say the whole thing is an elaborate plot to kill Captain Jack while he is...

mortal.
I hadn't heard about Rex's part of the pilot (how he's impaled, but he lives). THAT is an interesting plot point. I hope he does lots of heroic stuff that winds up bringing about his own end in a very bittersweet kind of way (since he should have died anyway).
ReplyDeleteMiracle Day would most likely be temporary and people don't heal... they remain as injured as they are. So when/if Miracle Day does end and people die again, all the inured, near death people would die. So hunting them does make sense in a longer term.
ReplyDeleteYou can see in the Wallpapers I posted last weekend that he is injured and bleeding....
ReplyDeleteOh that's true! I figured he was injured, but it didn't occur to me that the injury was thematic (i.e. he was injured badly enough to die, but didn't because of the premise of the show, making him the perfect combination of character and exposition).
ReplyDeleteDespite being the same photos as the cast promo photos, I did NOT notice the wounds until I looked closely at the wallpapers. That was when I realized that people do not die, but they do not heal either.
ReplyDeleteThen the 11-minute featurette mentioned something on those lines too.
Between that and Jack's twist it should be a very interesting season!!
Oh! People don't heal either! Man, I need to pay more attention to this stuff. With GoT ending and Breaking Bad starting up around the same time, I haven't been paying enough attention to Torchwood.

ReplyDeleteThat's a good theory. Finding a way to kill the immortal guy.
ReplyDeleteI swear, Russel Davies wrote that excerpt. The prose is 100% him. Also, Rex Matheson might be the stupidest name in the history of TV.
ReplyDeleteAh well, still looking forward to it.
I think I remember reading the answer (or at least part of it) somewhere but if it's true it's a major plot point so I won't spoil it. (Yes, the irony of making that particular choice on this website does not escape me.) Anyway, your question should be answered during the first few episodes.
ReplyDeleteI knew it! It's their way around having to explain Jack's immortality!
ReplyDeleteExcept, you know, we've already SEEN him die.
