Great job again.. long one! wow!
ReplyDeleteTo answer most of your questions posed.... most scenes in the books have a little more meat to them but they don't show Robert's boar attack or death directly either. The reason for this is that Robert is not a POV character so we learn of it from Ned's reaction to the news just like in the series.
Also, the limited POV characters in the book affect how we perceive Varys and Littlefinger too. They are more obviously sketchy and pulling the strings in the kingdom than in the books. The series lets the viewer see through Littlefinger and Varys's eyes and you get a much better feel for them. It's been fun to see them on screen and have so much more detail.
In the first book we only see through the eyes of Ned, Catelyn, Jon, Sansa, Arya, Bran, Tyrion and Daenerys. Any other scenes without those characters are created by the writers and new to the series. So no Varys vs Littlefinger meetings, no Robert and Cersei chats and no Jaime and Cersei chats etc....
And Ros was a nonentity for the most part... thankfully! Damn HBO for creating a phrase which will forever both haunt and irk me - Sexposition.
Dragons, death and Drogo... great combo. Reverse the order and you have it spot on!
Right on about seeing more of the world. The next seasons or books deal with the war of Five Kings and you get to know the more minor houses and learn about the realms in more detail. Including behind the wall!
Ned did get "chumped" but he was a chump in some ways. In a world where corruption and scheming rules, to stick to your ethics and honor code is just setting yourself up for death. Still such a striking death! Powerful to see Arya react and Sansa faint from shock and horror.... and then finally WAKE UP to reality!
One disagreement with Danny(?) is that Ned never knew it was his final moment so in the books it made sense that we never saw into Ned's head. He assumed and was basically told that if he admitted to treason his girls would be safe and he could "take the black" and join the Night's Watch. It was only because of Joffrey's demented and twisted mind (possibly influenced by Littlefinger) that Ned was beheaded.
About Drogo's injury. In the book they DO describe his injury. Drogo took an arrow to the leg and a vertical Arahk slice down his chest that basically sliced his nipple off. It was a detached nipple hanging off his body by a strand of flesh. Not a small cut like the series.
With regards to Drogo's actual death and Mirri Maz Duur's death, Dany realized the the reason her son was dead was because of the blood magic. It took his life to "save" Drogo. That death for life exchange showed her that a different death could possibly then give life to the dragon eggs... her new children.
The best part about Game of Thrones is that dead is dead. This series is NOT Supernatural. The final episode was anti-climatic somewaht but perfect as denouement. Season Two is set up so perfectly now and with Ned, Robert, Viserys and Drogo dead.... no one is safe!
