  1. A little disappointed they did not change the last ring in the opening credits to show a Lannister lion with the crown, but I guess Joffrey is a Baratheon... at least in name....

However that certainly disappeared as soon as Arya and Syrio came on screen! Syrio kicked some well armored ass! Stoopid Lannister lions killing all Baratheon loyalists!

Varys looks so odd in leathers and unperfumed! He delivers his lines as well though... "[I serve] The realm. Someone has to". AWESOME!

Oh Cersei irony is lost on you I gather!
How can you let Sansa , the daughter if a traitor, marry your son? Your son who is the spawn of The Kingslayer who happened to have killed his own king. If you ask me traitors fit right in to the Lannister line!

I seriously hope those raven rookeries are soundproofed !! Can you imagine the squaking of hundreds of ravens at once.... all the time.... all day.....

Ha! We get to meet Shagga, son of Dolf of the Stone Crows; Timett,  son of Timett; the fairmaiden (ha!) Chella, daughter of Cheyk; and Bronn, son of someone you haven't heard of!
    BEST LINE OF THE NIGHT!

Ghost! Ghost returns! Is that seriously two episodes in a row? Ohhhh ugly! Undead Crows are quite unappealing!

Wait! Did I seriously just see that? HBO left out a sex scene that was in the books?  The Lamb woman was being raped repeatedly by men in the books, not thrown around. I guess if she were a red-haired prostitute she would have gotten the sex scene left in the episode....

When will people learn it is a very bad idea to piss off Khal Drogo! When their tongues are ripped out I guess...

The first episode written by GRRM himself and we have 2 direwolves in one episode! Go figure. Great scene with Robb and his bannermen dining. The Greatjon got a bit lippy didn't he? Well I found him more funny the less fingers... Well done Grey Wind!

#@$$^%@^&# Lannisrers! I hope kicking Ser Barristan the Bold out of the King's Gaurd comes back to haunt them later! Nice to know some one in the Seven Kingdoms has honor other than Eddard Stark alone.

Now will Ned's honor get him in trouble like it has the entire series?

Awesome episode. Maybe one of the least "contained" with no real beginning middle and end plot wise, but I thought it was very well done and had a real seamless feel to me unlike a few of the other episodes. The transitions all felt natural and unforced and it was just so well-honed. I guess that happens when the writer of the books writes an episode for the series....

I thought we'd get the battle this week, but I guess it comes next week. Can't wait for it!

  2. Is it just me or does Jon "Greatjon" Umber look a lot like Richard Moll (Night Court, Highlander)?

  3. Guess that site doesn't play well with hotlinking....

  4. I was very much underwhelmed by the final scene, but the rest of the episode was excellent.

Loved Khal Drogo being a huge boss.

What I like about Jon is that, while he`s setup to be a stereotypical hero character, he`s too busy brooding and feeling sorry for himself to be particularly heroic (with good reason to be fair) (minus the battling of White Walkers).

Robb on the other hand was awesome. More direwolf attacks means more awkward cutting, but it wasn`t as bad as Arya, Sansa, and Joffrey`s encounter with Nymeria in episode 2.

Tyrion showed himself to be his usual excellent self and, yes, Bronn definitely did have the best line of the night.

Varys was also a lot of fun. I liked watching Littlefinger, Pycelle, and Varys all plotting behind the plotting Cersei.

SYRIO FOREL! I hope he made it out of that situation alive. The episode needed more Arya. Since it was called `The Pointy End` I thought we would have a lot more of her than we did. Also, less Sansa please. I can`t tell if I`m disliking the acting, or the character. I mean, yes, the character is insufferably naive, but still. I guess we`ll see as time goes on.

Finally, with all of the plotting and discussion of huge numbers of men, I`m worried that they`re building up excitement that they can`t follow through on... I mean, there`s no way we`re getting a 45 minute long Helm`s Deep.

Looking back at what I wrote, it seems that I was kind of down on the episode. Don`t get me wrong, I definitely enjoyed it. I think it was the anti-climactic finish that seems to have put me in an overly critical mood.

  5. I expected a little more Arya too. I was a little surprised by her first kill. In the books they make a note of "everything Syrio taught her left her head and all she recalled was Jon's first lesson - stick them with the pointy end" , and then she drove Needle forward killing the stable boy. In the episode it seemed almost accidental to me. I always read it as VERY purposeful.

The final scene was a very odd place to end it indeed. It did not complete any of the stories in the episode and I think it would have been better as an opening scene to next week.  I think they would have been MUCH better off showing Arya wandering in th dungeons briefly when they chose to show her first kill and then end the episode with Arya killing the stable boy and running down the street.

That possible end scene aside, maybe ending with Robb leading the Stark army into battle would have been good. Another good ending may have been Jon sneaking off from the Wall (like in the books) and being grabbed in the darkness by the hands of unseen assailants. Of course  in the next episode it would be Grenn, Pyp and Sam come to take him back to the Wall, but  it could have been played off as Lannister men etc.

Could not agree more about Sansa. It's sad but I literally dread every time her face appears on camera! Either she is terrible as an actress and so "one-note" I cannot stand it or they are writing her far too one-note and Sophie is the best actress in the world. In the books I loved to hate Sanasa, but in the series I just loathe her and any scene she ruins.

I hope Syrio made it out too!

I worry about the huge battle too. if they scale it down like they scaled down the Hand's Tournament it could be painful. If they do like one distant shot to show scale and then film tight on individual battles within it could work, but I worry it will seem like something less than one of the most important battles in the War of the Five Kings.

  6. As I said after 1x07 I expected an Arya heavy episode considering the title. Then again I was surprised we only saw her in the beginning and then she disappeared. Also the line stick 'em with the pinty end didn't occur so I'm not exactly sure why the episode was named like that.

Always great seeing Tyrion, can't wait to see him prepared for the battle. Unless he finds a way out of this, but he didn't look very happy when he saw his father's look.

The happenings at the wall are still a bit of a mystery to me. I suppose this season they won't have any influence on the plot, but it's more of a setup for coming seasons.
Nice seeing more of Ghost, but he wasn't very quiet again and I can only rely on one of darq's comments that he usually rarely makes any sound at all.

Liked Robb and his scenes. Especially dealing with this other Lord (don't know his name, but he was an excellent addition) who threatened to leave was pretty important.
Right now I can't predict the outcome of the battle. I don't think Ned will survive, but I also don't expect Robb to loose. I'm expecting something unexpected...

The ending was rather disappointing. Sansa being naive and stupid, thinking that her father will confess and say Joffrey is the rightful heir... Don't know what the point of this was. But even though I hate him, Joffrey was kind of good in this particular scene.

Ah, and finally we heard and saw a bit more of the youngest Stark kid.

The Dothraki scenes were rather pointless to me this week. Just showed that Dany is having a big influence on Drogo and that some of his people don't seem particularly happy about it.

  7. Felt very sorry for Barristan. I guess there will be repercussions or at least I hope so.

  8. The "Stick Them With the Pointy End" bit made more sense for the Arya scene in the book. In the book you 'hear' Arya's inner dialog and i played out something like this, but more detailed.

Arya was escaping through the dungeons and the streets of King's Landing over walls and rooftops while trying to calm herself reciting Syrio's lessons to her. But then when the stable boy tried to accost her, everything Syrio ever taught her vanished in a heartbeat. The only lesson Arya could remember was the one Jon Snow had given her, the very first. She stuck him with the pointy end, The other lord was Jon "Greatjon" Umber. He was another perfect casting for me.There Dothraki scenes this week will become important in the future, but right now seemed rather unimportant. Other than the AWESOME Drogo fight... and ew! ripping out a tongue, trachea and part of na esophagus.... ew!The one thing that bothered me most in the Dothraki scenes was... Why isn't Dany showing her pregnancy baby bump? She is like 6 to 7 months along at this point and should have a fair sized bump.

  9. Lysa and her son creep me the $%& out ... ewwww.

Skittle makes me happy.  I loved the interaction between Tywin and Tyrion.  There's always an underlying game of one upsmanship going on between them.

I actually really like Sophie's portrayal of Sansa - even in the books I could not figure out why they kept writing from her POV, it was flat reading too.  But Sansa herself is flat up until (spoiler), she has a single driving purpose to be this great Lady and marry the prince.  She's still hanging on to those romantic fantasies of knights and true love.  She doesn't have any personality other than the one drilled into her by Septa.  The complete opposite of Arya which is why we love seeing her so much on screen.

Arya is delightful - the show has been somewhat stingy with Maisie's scenes - they better not be come season 2.

Cercei ... you aspire to power and the throne - be careful what you wish for.

Overall a good ep, a little disjointed but they are squeezing and awful lot of material into these last 3 eps.  Can't wait for next sunday :)

  10. I was just thinking about how I missed so much of Arya from the books! Jinx!
Her reciting all the lessons Syrio taught her as she did absolutely any daily task. They made me chuckle in the books and added even more warmth to her character.

One would hardly know from the limited exposure in the series that her nickname was Arya Underfoot for always being around NEd and in places she ought not be.

  11. I keep trying to like Lena as Cersei, but I can't. Same with Sophie as Sansa. I read AGOT again since the series started and pictured every character as the role from the series.... except those two.

Every other casting choice has been brilliant as soon as I saw it or won me over in an episode or three.

  12. Agreed. Not enjoying Heady in the role at all. She's far too... arch. And cold. She flip flops between "Has Depth" (discussing her love for Robert/Lyanna, or discussing her dead firstborn) and "Is Far Too Cold and Frowny (the rest of the time). If she gave some sort of hint of depth when being cold and calculating, or some sort of hint of cold calculation while showing depth, she'd be more consistent and likable.

  13. As much as people seem to overwhelmingly hate Joffrey, I think his actor is doing a tremendous job. This is in contrast to the fairly unlikeable Cersei and Sansa, who aren't even fun to hate because their acting confuses me.

    ReplyDelete
  14. Yeah it really did seem accidental. I mean, props to HBO for killing a child on screen, but still. It made so much more sense in the books (as you've explained in your post below describing how it went down in the novel).

The problem with Sansa, to be fair, is that she is written one-note. Yes, the actress says everything with the same tone and I don't doubt that that somehow affects our opinions of her, but the things she's saying are all written like that too. I liked her in the pilot. I just hope that she gets better as she stops being so naive.

  15. so are Septa and Syrio dead?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Ah, now that is a really good question. It was heavily implied and yet, with there being no verbal or onscreen confirmation, we can't be completely sure.

When it comes to the Septa, someone mentioned the fact that all of Ned's people had been killed. This probably includes Septa Mordane. In fact, in the novels, her head is mounted on a pike on the Red Keep's walls. I imagine that she is dead.

As for Syrio, he's another matter all together. He wasn't a member of Stark's household, so the blanket "everyone is dead" doesn't apply to him. Novelwise, there is a lot of speculation about Syrio's continued existence. For now, the simplest answer is that yes, he is dead; however, I'm not completely certain and with him being the awesomest character ever so, I really hope he's still out there.

  17. So many good comments here, I have nothing to add! :D It was an awesome episode! And yes, I expected more Arya too!! :(

  18. Well I've finally caught on ( thanks SpoilerTV Podcast for suggesting the show )
Loved the epi, and is it me or was this the easiest episode to follow. I found it before somewhat hard to understand with their old use of language, it's more difficult for someone who's not perfect in english....
The intro is almost two minutes long, but I never skip it, cause the music is awsome!!!

Is the sword teacher of Arya dead? I kinda liked him....
gosh only 2 episodes left.....  :(

  19. I finally watched it (the downside of living in Europe), and it was amazing! I thought it was the best episode yet, which is saying something. Khal Drogo was simply amazing in his fight (just like his dance last week). I also hope to see more scenes with Tyrion and Tywin. They were amazing together!

Robb was bad ass. Good that we finally saw some of the little Stark kid (even though it was like one line), Bran was his normal self I guess. And Jon Snow was awesome too. I do hope he will stop looking so damn angry all the time, lol. He killed a walker (atleast I think it was one), be happy about it.

I loathe every Sansa, Cersei, Joffrey scene. Although Joffrey is played a lot better than Sansa and or Cersei. And man. Lysa's kid saying "I'm hungry!" and trying to open her dress... I'm glad I didn't have to see that again ;).

  20. I felt it was the easiest episode to flow too and had a more natural flow to it than many of the other episodes. I think the fact that the author of the books wrote this episode made a difference.

Two school of thought on Syrio's fate. The first is Syrio saying "The  First Sword of Braavos does not run" is all you need to know. He would have stayed and kept fighting Lannister men as they came and evenetually died.

The second theory is that Syrio defeated the Lannister lions and while they were all unconscious, he left the Red Keep. When the Lannister men woke up they were too embarrassed to tell anyone that a dance instructor defeated 5 armored men. So Syrio escaped to 'dance' another day.

One interesting note about this. George RR Martin (The author) refuses to answer the question of Syrio's fate in any interview.

  21. Agree on all points ESPECIALLY Lysa and her pathetic son!

There will be at least one more scene of Tywin and Tyrion this year I am fairly certain.

Jon is angry for most of the books honestly. He broods, it's what he does and who he is. The good news is in later books he is too busy to think of brooding too often!

I'm not sure if Jon killed a white walker or if he killed the undead victim (zombie) of a white walker honestly.

Interesting book note on that scene. In the fight Ghost helped battle Ortho the zombie and once again a direwolf saved a Stark.

  22. I thought Joffrey overdid his early scenes, but in the last few episodes and in the Sansa requests mercy scene I thought he was VERY good! When I read the book I see Joffrey from the series now.

I am right with you on Cersei and Sansa. I cannot make up my mind if I hate the casting choices, hate the direction D&D have taken the characters, or if I hate the characters because the actresses are doing their jobs well! Even if it's the third I have issues with Cersei being so less explosive than in the books.

In the books the reader feels fire and passion whether she is mocking someone or being civil I think that "fire" is lacking as portrayed on screen.

Sansa I think is one of the hardest characters to bring to screen so I am cutting one of the most inexperienced actresses some slack for now. She is such a proper brat in the book... and Sophie does play that bratty quality well, but I still can't enjoy any scene she is the center of...

    ReplyDelete
  23. I know it wasn't in the books ... so how come for this ep they made Hodor a White Walker?

    ReplyDelete
  24. He didn't kill one of the "White Walkers", but rather, he killed a "Wight". I don't know if they're going to bother making the distinction since the two sound so similar out loud and it might get a bit confusing. Basically, the creepy purple eyed giant guy with a sword from the pilot is a "White Walker". Anyone who comes back from the dead (with blue eyes) is a "Wight", raised by the "White Walkers." In the novels, although the term White Walker is used, they are more often referred to as "The Others". I think they did away with the term because of its use on LOST.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Yup, he killed a wight, not a white walker.
