Game of Thrones - Season 2 - Casting Rumor - Christopher Eccleston could join
28 Jun 2011
Game of ThronesWith filming soon to start on Game of Thrones' second season (which should be right after Comic-Con), casting news and rumors are starting to surface. And the most interesting rumor concerns the casting of a former Time Lord.
According to Den of Geek, the former 9th Doctor himself, actor Christopher Eccleston, is rumored to be currently lined up for a role in the second season of HBO's hit drama/fantasy series.

i hope it is the optimal second season now with the doctor *-*
ReplyDeleteEpic news, I'd be very happy to see him in GoT :D
ReplyDeleteI'm trying to figure out who he would play. Some rumors are saying Stannis but I'm thinking it might be Balon Greyjoy.
ReplyDeleteThis could be cool... Eccleston is usually pretty decent!
ReplyDeleteI kind of can't imagine him as Stannis..
ReplyDeleteThere's been a rumor of him cast as Stannis Baratheon for a couple months now, but no real solid proof just yet. It would be interesting if he was though!
ReplyDeleteAlso been months of rumors about Tony Curran (Pillars of the Earth) as Edmure Tully, but again no solid evidence just yet.
These are too fun to not post somewhere! From

I can't see him as Stannis either... maybe Davos?
ReplyDeleteI could see Gerard Butler as Stannis, but I'm afraid that is just another rumor for now.
Balon would be interesting.... I thought maybe Davos, but Balon would fit better maybe...
ReplyDeleteOh! The number of muppets has increases since when last I checked :D! Ahahaha, Animahl Drogo. Too good.
ReplyDeleteAnyway, about this actual thread, as you say, Eccelston has been rumoured for a role for months. Not that it couldn't happen... I'm just skeptical. Blastr probably grabbed it off winter-is-coming.
We should start getting some solid info soon with production begins in July. At least, I'm hoping we will.
ReplyDeleteYep. I trust the casting team since they have more than earned it with their first season choices!
ReplyDeleteThat said, Natalie Dormer as Margery Tyrell threw me a little. I think Margery is like 16 or 17 in the books if I recall and Natalie is twice that. Even with the cast aged up a few years.... it stretched it in my mind, but I'm sure she will pull it off!
Yeah, with he plot what it is, the age here actually does matter. Still, she seems good and everyone is raving about her (I have never seen the tudors). Did you see the wording of her casting news? It sounded like she was being made a series regular. The words were something like "she joins the regular cast as Margery Tyrell". This means several things.
ReplyDeleteA) She is joining the cast. Some members of the cast happen to be regulars.
B) She is a series regular. This means her book role will be beefed up which also means:
C) Loras and Renly will likely be promoted.
Thoughts?
After my initial reaction I thought about it and I actually think aging her up ADDS to the role.
ReplyDeleteIt sets her up as a better nemesis for Cersei and a more worldly and dangerous player in The Game of Thrones.
I think Natalie Dormer would have been better suited to another role but I think she'll work as Margery.
ReplyDeleteWhat I'm really worried about the casting of Brienne and Melisandre. I know a lot of people are suggesting all these actresses based on looks but I'd rather have someone who nails the character than someone who happens to look the part.
I agree for the most part. Melisandre's look is not important much at all really and much of it will be covered by makeup, wardrobe and the wig department.
ReplyDeleteI do feel that appearance is important to Brienne though.
She really NEEDS to be a large woman that stands as an equal or as a superior to most men. Her character feeling shy and so out of place is caused by her look and size. In fact I think every aspect of Brienne stems from her stature and appearance. Makeup and hair will cover a lot of the physical traits for sure, but not height or strength or sword skill so much.
That said, of course they need an actress that can get the character's spirit and pull off the fish out of water, woman in men's armor in a man's world doing a man's job personality.
I wouldn't be too worried. Nina Gold has been brilliant about casting. I think my only quibble was the guy playing Illyrio, and he showed up in half a dozen scenes (if that). Reports coming in from current members of the cast (mostly the guy playing Renly) say that we will be VERY pleased with whomever they've picked. I don't think we necessarily need more big names, as long as the actor/actress is excellent. At the same time, there are many big names who ARE obviously excellent. So, we should find stuff out over the next week or two.
ReplyDeleteOh I agree. But I'm not going to balk if she happens to be a bit shorter than Jaime(in the books she is taller iirc) because the actor they cast for him happens to be very tall.
ReplyDeleteRight. I personally might balk, but it will pass in an episode or two. I t took me a little time to get used to King Robert being 5'10" and not 6'3" or 6'4" etc
ReplyDeleteIn the end I thought Addy was BRILLIANT as Robert
Casting did pay attention to height for the 2 other roles that are usually referred to by their height, like Brienne. Sandor Clegane and Gregor Clegane both were cast with actors that fit the heights in the book.
Agreed, I don't think I've seen him on TV since his short stint on Heroes.
ReplyDeleteI think that would be brilliant. Fingers crossed!
ReplyDeleteHe's currently doing a BBC drama series called "The Shadow Line" with Chwetel Ojiofer(?).
ReplyDeleteHe has one of the two leads so he has a fairly meaty role.
I posted a few posts on here about the series, but I can't find one now... sorry. There are photos in the archive though.
I haven't heard of that show, thanks for the info.
ReplyDeleteI think it wouldn't hurt to have a name comparable to Sean Bean or Mark Addy in Season Two.
ReplyDeleteFirst, to fill in the void left by Sean and Mark dying.
Second, with so many new characters each season, it will be nice to have an anchor in the new cities or locations of the story. Much like Mark and Sean were in Winterfell and King's Landing or Jon and Jeor Mormont at The Wall or Dany and Jorah Mormont in the East.
Lastly, I think it never hurts to have talented "big name" actors. I don't think they are needed as some truly brilliant performances have come from the lesser known actors in Season One, but I don't think it would hurt either.
Although if they save money by adding no big names and use said money on Direwolf CGI and dragon CGI I would be ok with it I think.
No problem. I love sharing good TV series with people.
ReplyDeleteIf you do start to watch it, the first episode or two don't really go anywhere plot wise. They just introduce characters and just leave you wondering what the series is actually about.. Kind of like GoT I guess XD. The last few episodes have been great though.
