  1. Another novel title.

This time the episode is titled after Hemingway's "The Sun Also Rises" novel, which focuses on post-WWI life and highlights the themes of "lost generation"(ie people without hope or future, to damaged to plan it, living life in present) and is structured to highlight the natural life-death order of things.

The novel itself focuses on seemingly perfect love relationship between Jake and Brett. A relationship, which as novel progresses, becomes more and more destructive, due to both main characters not being entirely as honest and as good as it seemed at the start. Jake through the novel looses his honor, love, faith, hope and is completely devastated. Brett on other hand turns out to be a selfish, immoral woman, driven by selfish desires and impulses, causing problems and bringing her beloved even lower than he is.

The novel also plays with "future"possibilities of their relationship, had they actually been like they seemed at the start of novel, but eventually they both move different ways, each spiraling downwards in the way he/she best knows.

  2. Thanks for sharing. I'm interested in seeing the connection between the novel and the episode... probably some sort of foreshadowing as to the nature of Elena and Stefan's relationship just before the season finale. Anyways, good stuff. Thanks for providing that info :)
