  1. Another awesome episode. Nice for the 'The Kingsroad" to show the inner workings of the relationships more.

The familial bond between Jon Snow and his siblings (all but Sansa of course). How even if Catelyn has never accepted Jon, the children rely on him and look up to him as a big brother. The almost brotherly bond between King Robert and Ned Stark. Considering Jon Arryn raised them both as wards when they were young I guess that is to be expected, but it just was not discussed enough detail in the pilot.

Also nice to hear at least one of the Dire wolves names. In the books they are so important to each of the children and always underfoot. They hinted at it a little with Bran's Wolf following him around and now we get to see the wolf protect its master during an attempted assassination. They could have at least revealed out heroes name as he sat at the foot of the bed looking protective.. For those that care, Bran's Wolf is named Summer.Arya's wolf protecting her from the attack of Joffrey too. It almost seems out of place without seeing the weeks of bonding between pup and master/mistress.

Have to feel for Jon.He leaves his family (even if not fully accepted) to seek honor being a protector of the realm. Then he finds out the the "honorable" Night's Watch is made up of criminals and rapists. Not exactly what he had planned for himself.

We also got to see two young girls growing into women. Sansa becming more weak and submissive to her "darling" Prince Joffrey and Daenerys becoming more assertive to her Khal Drogo. Both foreshadowing of their mediate futures to a large degree.

The depth of the characters is starting to come out more and more. Two episodes in and you are beginning to feel as if you know more than a handful of the characters quite well.

Again incredibly acting and I am enjoying the adaptation for the most part other than missing the time spent with the wolves as they bonded to the Stark children. The drama and action should begin to pick up as Jon arrives on the wall and the King's party arrives back in King's Landing.

  2. I liked it too, I just don't like it when, even if it is fiction, an animal has to be killed. That will be my least favourite moment in the story. The queen is a bitch and her son is whinny little brat. Too bad the other sister couldn't have stood up to them and told the truth.

  3. That scene did its job then. It gave insight into the true character of both Queen Cersei and Prince Joffrey. How the queen demanded some form of revenge even if it was unjust. She had to have her way. How Joffrey smiled as they verdict was given on Lady. Knowing it would cause his possible future queen despair.... and he just smiled wickedly enjoying her pain and his shallow victory. A victory not won by him, but by his mother over a 13 year old and a 10 year old.

    Twisted folk these Lannisters are.....

  4. The thing I love is the level of detail in Game of Thrones. On each viewing more details pop out. I just noticed on second viewing the credits changed to adapt to the story in this episode. From King's Landing to Winterfell to The Wall to Pentos in the Pilot. In this episode it went to the Dothraki Grasslands and showed the horses and tents...not Pentos.

  5. Cadence and I discussed this once before, but would anyone want a spoiler free Q&A or brief explanation of histories of past events that led to where the series started? I am by no means an expert, but I could answer many questions... Cadence could answer more than me probably and I think others on the site know the books well too.

Much of the meaningful past can be found in HBO's viewer's guide here.

    http://viewers-guide.hbo.com/game-of-thrones/

On the upper right there is a button for "The Houses" if you click that you can get info on each house, family trees and brief synopses on characters.

Then in the upper right corner again, there is the "Appendix". It has a nice description of the war that led up to the series and a few brief histories of the gods, organizations and people in the world Game of Thrones takes place.

Personally I think that reading these short histories and maybe a few of the character or family synopses will help with understanding the series on a much deeper level. After reading them the layers of context from the books will more or less be there for you to add to the enjoyment and to curb most confusion....

  6. Much better than the pilot. This episode was full of wonderful performances and it actually felt more like you were being told a story and not a nice clip show of book moments. I still think they wasted time and money with the Targaryens. This week Daenerys got a bit more personality than a a slow-mo walking doll, maybe it's that she showed interest in the dragon story or realzing she could use sex. Now she just has to get rid of her stupid annoying brother, I would love it if she used her husband to kill him and everything is peachy. :D The whole Stark clan was phenomenal in this episode. And the bonding between John Snow (the bastard) and Tyrion Lannister (the dwarf) was great. I can't wait to watch the next episode!

  7. Sorry, I have to disagree, sure a scene (flashback, memory, etc.) with the kids and the pups would have been nice but I don't think you needed it to understand the bond between the kids and the wolves.

  8. I'm glad! I was wondering how someone that has not read the books would see the 2 separate wolves attacking the Stark's attackers.

It's difficult to "pretend" to remove the knowledge of the books from my mind and attempt to look at the series without that knowledge and imagine how i would see the series...

  9. Well this is just sad..... http://www.valyriansteel.com/shop/swords/needle-sword-of-arya-stark/prod_3.html

One might think that is a sword shop was going to name a sword after one on TV they may actually make an effort for their product to resemble said sword on TV!!!

  10. Just watched it... very snazzy episode. This was a typical second episode, cut back on everything other than the characters.
It took me a while to work out where everyone was, but that's probably because of the fact I still am getting to know the characters. Also didn't Ned leave with the King at the end of the 1st episode? I assume he returned for his son, but they din't explain it. I also hadn't realised most of his chidren had gone with him until the Dog-Drama unfolded.
The wall storyline is intriguing me the most and I found Tyrion as the most interesting character thus far.
Also enjoyed the woman who married the Dothraki's storyline, glad her brother didn't get much screen-time! She also is becoming a bit obsessed with that Dragon egg!
Liking it, the pace is nice, hopefully the wolves will take a bit more of a step back now and let us focus on the actual human relationships.
Enjoying the fact I have no idea where it's going, what is going to happen or anything at all. Oh, except that "Winter Is Coming." Think they might have mentioned that :P

  11. In the first episode Ned left to go HUNTING with the King... not to go back to King's Landing. They really did not get into Sansa and Arya going with Ned to King's Landing.

Sansa is going with to bond with her "new family" as she is now betrothed to Prince Joffrey... and to prepare for the eventual royal wedding. Arya is going with as something similar to a "lady in waiting" or part of her sister's "court".

The Dragon Egg's are Dany's connection to the past she never knew. Her ancestor's the Targaryen Kings of the past conquered the realms with the help or dragons they controlled. Dragons have been extinct for hundreds of years now, but these "fossils" are her past, present and future....

In the books the wolves do become more background characters. often referred to, but not real stories onto themselves. The exception is Jon's wolf who is with him at the Wall and very much a part of his experience there in the books.

The books where very much like that too. The real direction of the story takes place in the middle act of Book One (as much as there can be a middle act when characters are strewn across the realms).

    Glad you are enjoying!

  12. Wait a second! Reading through this I just realised that we haven't seen Ghost since the pilot. Where was he on the way to The Wall!?

    ReplyDelete
  13. know... Like I said I miss the Wolf pups and bonding with them the most of all the changes. I assume he went with Jon to the wall, but we have not seen him since the initial "adoption" of them in the forest. I wonder if they are going to diminish Ghost's role as much as they have Lady and Nymeria's roles. Those two are not as important, but yet they were the first to be introduced by name. When the other 3 Wolves have ongoing roles .... so I amjust not sure... not at all!

  14. They didn't make the sword after it was shown on TV.
They just made it resemble the sword the way they imagined it from the books.

  15. I realized that AFTER I wrote it. Oooops! I wonder if they will now make a version that is based on the HBO series too?

  16. I did enjoy King Robert dissing his "son" with the words that "This little girl disarmed you and threw your sword away" indicating his humiliation should have him hiding not crying for justice. The Lannisters are EVIL EVIL EVIL- I cannot wait to see them get theirs. You gotta love that they are out to kill little kids and puppies - I don't think you get much more vile than that! "Anakin killing younglings? No!" Ah- the dark side is strong with these ones....Anyone else excited about the wife of the horse lord deciding to get tutored by the courtesan in the ways of controlling men and using her means to get her own power and embrace the dragon conqueror within herself? Me thinks her brother will not be getting what he plans from this arranged marriage.

  17. Alright, I'll try to type down some thoughts although there's not a lot left to say, everything's pretty much covered already.

The Kingsroad was a good follow-up to Winter Is Coming, but for me personally it didn't quite click yet. I enjoy it, but I was hoping I would be more intrigued by it and get sucked into the story really quickly. So far this hasn't happened and I'm having trouble explaining it. The monthlong hype definitely is to blame. The other problem I guess is responsible for my feelings is that some things should be more detailed in my opinion. But of course that's always the problem with adapting books, especially when they are as detailes as A Song Of Ice And Fire appears to be. Good thing I haven't read them...

But we don't really know the full degree of Bran's injuries or what's going to happen with him.
It was pretty surprising to me that some of the Stark kids came with Ned, others stayed in Winterfell. It was clear to me that Sansa would come along, but why did Arya come too? And what about the little Stark kid that hasn't really been introduced yet and was only seen quickly when King Robert came to WInterfell and when Rob mentioned him to his mother.
There are some other little examples, but those are the ones that stood out me.

The wolves are great and to me they were the stars in this episode, but they grew up very fast. Has anyone an idea what time span those first two episodes covered? Must have been some months already.

Best character so far - Tyrion. He was awesome and it was made clear that his wit and intelligence will be crucial in the future. Also liked him bonding with Jon.
Also liked the Hound. Don't know if he's important in the books, but he was pretty interesting in this episode.

  18. I was wondering how long the King's party stayed at Winterfell too. I don't recall hoe long their stay at Winterfell was in the books. I doubt they would travel a month on horseback and only stay a few days, but I just don't recall. If we can gauge time by hair growth, Jon's hair has grown out quite a bit since the 'barber' cut it the night of the King's welcome feast.I do know that between the time The Starks found the DireWolf pups and King Robert arrived at Winterfell was about a month.

According to GRRM's description of Direwolves, they can grow to be as large as ponies. From what I have read or seen on our real world Direwolves, they think they were approximately up to 5 feet in length and up to 250 pounds. Taller than a modern grey wolf but stockier in appearance and proportionally shorter stronger legs. So them growing so much, so fast in our minds is partly due to the species huge size and partially due to the time spent at Winterfell.

  19. Hmmmm, interesting to learn that the first book covers about 2 years.

About the direwolves - I suppose they won't be pictured as big as in the books. It's just easier to use regular direwolves instead of using CGI effects.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Yeah I think they will keep them normal sized but you never know. From what I recall in the books their actual size does not come into play. So they could get away with wolf sized direwolves.

Also I researched some just now and It is closer to one year for book one. Illyrio invites the Targaryens to live in his manse in 297, so the story begins some time after that... likely near 298. The latest events in book one likely take place around the start of 299 or the end of 298. The way the books are written it is hard to pinpoint times of events in the books themselves. The histories all have precise dates, but events that take place in the books... well it's more approximations...

  21. Well, in regards to time span, Catelyn says (upon deciding to go South) that a month has passed since Bran's fall. While I think I'm enjoying the show more than you, I definitely think that they could be doing a better job of explaining lengths of time. I have no clue how long Danaerys has been with the Khal, nor do I know how much time had passed between Ned and the King heading south and Catelyn leaving Winterfell.

    ReplyDelete
  22. I agree completely on time in the series... or the lack of viewer perspective of time more so. When I was researching the timeline and trying to sort out events in Book One, I read that there are no "official" timelines for the time of the books themselves because GRRM said he doesn't want people to concentrate on time and a different person that constructed their own timeline said that GRRM prefers others do NOT make timelines. I found that odd.

With so many characters in different parts of this continent or "island", and so many of the POV chapters taking place at different times chronologically maybe he fears the "LOST syndrome". Where in the final season everyone is constantly making trips back and forth across the island so that certain characters are in the places they need to be at specific times for specific events to take place.

For an author that puts so much detail into his books, I would think that having specific event dates would be a given. I never really thought about it before as I was reading, but I did when watching the series since so much content was removed making it harder to gauge time lengths.

  23. In regards to Daenerys wasn't there a line in the books in Dany's POV about how Khal Drogo took her every night for tow weeks from behind in the Dothraki fashion.. something like as relentlessly as he rode his horses... but Dany didn't mind because she could hide her tears in the pillows. and it got so bad she considered ending her life until she found the strength in her dragon's eggs.... and then every night it was easier for her.

SO I assume that was a couple weeks or a month even.

Then there is a line "For half a moon they rode down through the Forests of Qohor..." this all happened the day Dany and her handmaids have the conversation about dragons and the Moon and "it is known" etc. Then GRRM writes "it was her 14th name day". Without going into spoilers, I assume at this point it has been at least a month or two with the Khal.

But honestly all that is moot since they have rearranged events. Those events are all supposed to happen after Viserys has an outburst. We haven't seen that outburst yet... or maybe we won't?

  24. We have our first causality of the Game of Thrones wars.

"According to The Smoking Gun, Michael Podniestrzanski and his cousin, Joshua Ross, "got into a verbal altercation" about which of the HBO show's characters were going to win a battle.

The verbal disagreement then turned physical, with the report indicating Podniestrzanski took a swing at Ross. As the fight continued, Ross reportedly "ended up getting thrown into the front window during the altercation."

Podniestrzanski was arrested for misdemeanor domestic battery and as of yesterday is currently being held in county jail."

That is taking TV watching a little TOO seriously for me....
