Pilot Buzz - Shows most likely to be picked up

From an interview with Horizon Media senior vice president of research Brad Adgate

Are there any pilots that are already receiving a far amount of buzz? Which ones look most promising for this fall?

I think "Missing," a drama on ABC with Ashley Judd, is about as close as a sure thing you can get for a pilot getting picked up. It’s about a former CIA agent (Judd) looking for her missing son in Italy.

I think "The River," a drama about a famous TV naturalist lost in the Amazon, could get picked up, it sounds a little like "Lost."

On CBS an unnamed drama from Susannah Grant about a doctor who gets advice from beyond the grave from his deceased wife is the type of show that has worked well in the past with the network.

"Person of Interest" from J.J. Abrams is about a former CIA operative turned detective, and it may also get ordered.

On The CW, "Awakening" is a series about a zombie uprising, and that genre has been popular on that network.

Besides "Terra Nova" and "X Factor," other shows that could be new on Fox in 2011-12 include "Exit Strategy," about CIA operatives looking to gracefully leave a botched operation.

The animated version of "Napoleon Dynamite" should have a cult following similar to the film.

On NBC, "Prime Suspect," based upon a British series about a female detective in a male-dominated precinct with Maria Bello, seems like it will get an order. Another one is "Smash," about putting together a Broadway musical with Debra Messing. It comes from Steven Spielberg. "Wonder Woman" has gotten a lot of buzz as well.

  2. Don't know anything about this show, but I'd like to see Kirk Acevedo more regularly on my TV...

  3. I have no idea what the Christina Applegate pilot on NBC is called, but with her, Will Arnett and Maya Rudolph on board surely that's almost a dead cert to get picked up? And the Chelsea Handler one?

  4. Nothing surprising on the green light for Persons of Interest, given who's involved. I can't believe there will actually be a proper drama on CBS (I haven't seen The Good Wife yet, heard a lot of praise though), not a copshow. Same for Awekening, me likes some zombies.

And how can you pass on Ashley Judd and Sean Bean starring in a mystery drama ? The River (with Leslie Hope I think) looks like one of the best new series of the next season as well. When I read all the pitchs from ABC pilots those two struck me in particular, along with Pan Am. ABC is gaining some interest all of a sudden, it looks like they finally decide to aim at a more masculine audience.

If Exit Strategy is on FOX this fall, it's not a good sign for Human Target. That makes me sad, Human Target improved a lot on its 2nd season so I hope there will be a compromise :

On Friday nights from September to December 2011 : 13 episodes of Exit Strategy season 1, alongside the first half of the 4th season of Fringe.
On Friday nights from January to May 2012 : 13 episodes of Human Target season 3, alongside the second half of the 4th season of Fringe.

That sounds about right. Kevin Reilly, may I take your seat ?

  6. The Good Wife is awesome, just putting that out there.
I'm glad ABC are getting back in there, if they can get these three pilots up and running into new shows that will do a world of good for them, considering how they have made some of the largest hits of tv today (Lost, Grey's, Depserate Housewives - you don't have to agree that they're good but the are successful).
I'm worried for Human Target. But Fringe is always a good thing.

  8. Ahh, I guess that's it then.

  10. im actually not sure of the accuracy of those reports

  11. is it? great! That show is gonna be awesome... lot of promising pilots this time... but unfortunately, most of the interesting shows on networks will hardly air a season... and the rest will limp to another season before being put down... I hate that among new shows, only historical and medieval fantasy crap is coming on cable (except The Killing which is awesome)...

  12. Alcatraz comes from Bad Robot (JJ Abrams's production house)... I am sure that it will be picked up even though his new shows are not working out that well...

  15. Haven't you read/Heard anything about Awakening? It's ridiculous and not in good way. As I said several times already their take on zombies is just an afront to the genre and sounds like it has the potential to be unintentionally funnier as many sitcoms.

  16. what about Secret Circle on the CW i think that has a stronger chance of being picked up than The Awakening does

  17. I really hope that Awakening and Secret Circle get picked up on the CW.

  18. according to both this article and a report from a tv event in Cannes, The Awakening is the CW pilot generating the most buzz (none of the others were mentioned) but of course the CW will pickup more than 1 of its pilots so i guess SS is still in the runner but Awakening is more of a sure thing

  19. Hmmm... sounds like most of the ones I thought would be picked up are being picked up. I ahte to root against any series, but with the contest on here....

Few more months and it will be time to be excited for a new crop of series... It's the most wonderful time.... of the year....

  20. The UK version is classic British Crime drama. Not so procedural as the initial crime dramas here. Most of the time Tennison (the protagonist detective) knows the suspect right away but spends the episode or two trying to build a case to arrest them.

I was looking forward to this anyway, but finding Mr. Acevedo in it is a treat indeed!
