Game of Thrones RatingsAccording to data obtained by Vulture, GoT earned a 1.6 rating in Nielsen's overnight household sample. By way of comparison, last September's debut of Boardwalk Empire on HBO averaged a 2.8 rating in the overnights.

I read that earlier... I guess I expected more like 2.5 overnights and over 3.5 million.. maybe near 5 million viewers total. I think a few of the Sunday shows may suffer from the NBA playoffs being on. I know 5 or so coworkers that watched the games and DVR'd Fall of Sam Axe and GoT to watch later. Maybe not and the ratings will just be low...
ReplyDeleteA thousand times more compelling than Boardwalk Empire.
ReplyDeletei know fell asleep watching BEs pilot lol
ReplyDeleteGOT i loved
I fell asleep during BE pilot too,,,, but I kept watching the series and enjoyed it. It still is one I do not watch if I am tired though....
ReplyDeleteSame for me.
ReplyDeletefail
ReplyDeleteWhat do they expect when HBO made it clear that the premiere would be available to watch across all of their channels simultaneously and additional viewings throughout the week?
ReplyDeleteIt's not exactly appointment television when it's almost impossible not to find it being repeated somewhere.
Boardwalk Empire was a bad show ,with poor ratings and HBO is now struggling ....
ReplyDeleteIt was on 3 times in a row on HBO premiere night alone. So I can hardly blame HBO for wanting to wait for the later airings ratings to figure them in too. It made it VERY convenient for viewers but it makes it terrible for premiere ratings I guess...
ReplyDeleteI am not sure I would agree with that on any level.
ReplyDeleteBoardwalk Empire won at least 2 awards last season and had more than 10 nominations
In addition... I know.True Blood is higher rated than when it first started. The Pacific was one of the best mini-series of all time. Temple Grandin won more than 10 awards last year and was nominated 15 times I think. Mildred Pierce will likely be nominated this year as will Game of Thrones.
I hate to see what you call successful if THAT is struggling!!
i think people hated the show when those sibling throw him from the wall lol juz kidding
ReplyDeleteJust watched the pre-credits. Intense stuff! haha
ReplyDeleteOH there are A LOT of events that may make people hate characters ore be disgusted with the series, but that one I'm sure made a few people gaps! Ha!
ReplyDeleteYou are gravely misinformed. Boardwalk Empire is a critically acclaimed series with strong ratings for HBO.

Game of Thrones was a really boring premiere. I was dissapointed with the pace and uninteresred in the plot. The only cool part was the very end when the kid was pushed out of the window. I thought it would be a powerful start, but it failed in my opinion. Same thing with the "Borgias"....another slow and uneventful series. Camelot is the only one out of three I actually like. It has a fast pace, the story is direct, and the characters are.......INTERESTING. I know I seem like a hater, but I will keep watching because, in the end, you can't judge any show on 1 episode. I got so used to having the other premieres being 2 hours as opposed to "Games" very short hour.
ReplyDeleteThe weak ratings could really just be that others thought like I did and was not impressed.
You don't seem like a hater to me at all honestly. You stated how you fell and why. And you aren't wrong, the pilot does not have a climactic event to cause the drama in the series like so many shows do. The series is more character driven than event driven, but there are big "explosive" type events that shape the story as it moves on.
ReplyDeleteI think Game of Thrones would have benefited fro ma 2 hour premiere too. There is so much detail and history that needed to be covered that it took up a large portion of the first episode.
I agree about The Borgias too. I have watched 3 episodes now and still am not sure if I like it or not.... That's rarely a good thing.
Camelot is more exciting than Borgias to me too, but has a somewhat "cheap" feel to it at times. I was expecting more, but I love Merlin and it's even cheaper production wise so I'm sure my feeling will pass and I will just enjoy Camelot without a second thought. It's growing on me each week.
WHAAT?
ReplyDeleteMakes no sense.
Unless they didn't count DVRs. Because I recorded it to watch/rewatch and catch everything and pretty much everyone I know did the same - there are few "casual" GoT viewers, except newcomers.
I am still guessing it will be over 4 and near 5 million viewers when it's all said on done ... with the 3 back to back to back episode numbers tallied and the DVR added in. I could be wrong....
ReplyDeleteIt follows the book very closely. Not exactlly, but pretty much what happened in the few chapters of the book, happened last night.
ReplyDeleteI refuse to believe this! I simply refuse to!
ReplyDeleteIf Glee ( which i have nothing against!) can get a goddamn 12 million viewership and all those NCIS' get over 20, than surely the fates would deem Game Of Thrones higher on that list!?
Ah, but times are cruel!
In any case, i really hope to see stronger final numbers. This is the kind of show that people need to adjust to, especially with it's strong sexual contents and tones..... It'll take a few episodes, and while that is totally understandable, i still would've wished to have been swept off my feet by the premiere numbers....even though we still have time for that to happen!
HBO doesn't really care who watches on 9pm (otherwise they wouldn't have A-Bombed their scedule with GoT repeats), so i hope they will base their upcoming decisions regarding the show's future (which seem to shine bright regardless of these numbers) on the total ammount of viewers that night or of the two first nights.
That's what the series is all about... a bit slow paced and character driven. And come on! Camelot? Terrible acting, worse writing and the cheapness is written all over it. But I guess that could be your thing if you prefer a lot of action (even if it has excruciating dialogue in it..)
ReplyDeleteInteresting article discussing how "Everyone was down Sunday" for ratings. They theorized it may be NBA play-offs starting and NFL playoffs ... Which does make sense.

Yeah, It is more of a preferance thing in the end. I acually thought Camelot looked epic in some scenes. The introduction of the castle was cool and the lady in the lake scene was impressive. That's just me. I'm all for character driven stuff, naybe that's why Game of Thrones deserved a 2 hour start.
