Clip #2 was funny but it also highlights the one and only thing that has ever really bugged me about Bones:
There's no way in hell that the main character, Dr. Temperance Brennan, could possibly be a successful pulp novelist. No chance. After all these years she still understands very little about conversational dialogue, the correct use of slang, humor, simile, metaphor, etc.
This character couldn't successfully write anything besides text books and owner's manuals.
Stephanie Meyer has no concept of conversational dialog, but that didn't stop her.
To be fair, though, I agree that these characters can sometimes seem to much like characterizations to exist. All of them, really, but especially Brennan. You just got to brush it off.
chupacabra! that's very x-files of you, bones. loving these long sneak peeks all involving b/b, btw. but i agree about brennan and the books. it's always bugged me too. the dialogue in her novels has gotta be mad awk.
there was an episode where it was explained that Angela sits with Brennan and listens to the rough draft & helps her flesh out the dialogue & characters & when to add an intimate scene or lighten it up.. Brennan ends up acknowledging Angela's contributions as the reason she is successful (b/c those are the parts people love most when she meets fans) and she pays Angela a percentage of her book sales
I remember. For that to be realistic, Angela would have to write the majority of the book on her own and that's not the way it was explained in the episode.
yeah, i was thinking of the angela contribution, but i agree that it's unrealistic that angela would just be tweaking brennan's dialogue. she'd have to be basically writing it. and it's also unrealistic that the forensics would be the majority of the book. i don't know... suspension of disbelief anyone?? that's basically the only way to watch this freakin' show anymore.
My point of view is that because Bones would control both sides of the conversation she would be able to make it do what she liked, and she definitely has her funny/light moments - she just doesn't get how other people think. Plus from memory its 25% that she pays Angela, so I'm guessing there's a fair amount of input!
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.

ReplyDeleteYeah. "Suspension of disbelief" or "just go with it", as I like to call it, is the conclusion I came to as well.
