Welcome to another week of Question of the Day, hope you all had great weekends. Today's question comes from Pigeon666 who asks

"In your opinion, what is the most shocking/confusing series ending to a tv show or ending to a movie?"

Great question Pigeon666.

I think I'll split this into 4 Answers

1) Most Confusing Film Ending
I'd have to say that still 20 Years after I first watched it, the ending of 2001: A Space Odyssey still rattles my brain. I'm still not sure what I'm supposed to think but it was pretty awesome anyway. Other films to mention, Mememto, Mulholland Drive, American Psycho and Donnie Darko.

Don't watch if you've not seen it

2) Most Shocking Movie Ending
There are just so many that I love. The Shining, American Psycho, Sixth Sense, The Skeleton Key to name but a few, but my all time number 1 is The Mist. The ending was shocking and heartbreaking and the haunting music just superb.

Don't watch if you've not seen it

3) Most Confusing TV Endings
There have been a few, Lost initially was up there along with St. Elsewhere (wtf was that about) but to be I'd have to Pick Twin Peaks.

Don't watch if you've not seen it

4) Most Shocking TV Ending
This may seem silly to most of you but for years I watched the adventures of Dr. Sam Beckett and the ending was just so abrupt due to them cancelling the show.

  2. The last episode of Battlestar Galactica http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HrjvjZET8R4

    Spoilers!

The fleet without any hope to survive jumps to Earth, beacuse Starbuck is apparently an angel, who dissapears instead of her log awaited happy ending with Lee, who ends up climbing some mountains (seriously, whats up with that). The president dies (but she actually sees the new home of the people) and Adama spends his days as a lonely hermit in a made up cabin. People give up their lifestyle for an almost guaranteed death while trying to play Robinson Crusou... Everything ends so sadly! :(

  3. The most confusing, in my opinion, was the ending to the Sopranos. When the screen went black, many viewers were upset that this was the way the producers chose to end this great series. I just wondered about what was supposed to happen next and did we miss it?!

  4. Ouch, not having seen it it does sound confusing lol

  5. I gotta go with Memento. I was so confused in the process of the movie that even when I was pretty sure I knew the next sequence started the confusion all over again, Great Movie!

  6. The series finale of Lost was definitely shocking. The end of "Bad News" - the episode of HIMYM where Marshall's dad died was not something I saw coming.

There's probably more that I can't think of right now.

  7. Shocking Movie ending for me is No Way Out's ending. Anybody who knew Kevin Costner was that guy at the end of the movie is LYING. You never saw that coming because they set it up so well to think the manhunt was just a bogus cover-up. I'd give 2nd place to The Usual Suspects, but only because I thought it weird Verbal was in a barbershop quartet in Skokie, Illinois.

Shocking TV ending: NEWHART! (also the funniest) And the best ending line of all time: Maybe you should wear more sweaters.

  8. Most Confusing Film Ending:

Either "The Fountain" or "Primer". I mean, Primer was just ridiculous to follow period, but, The Fountain's ending was either some sort of Postmodern Drivel, or possibly a Brilliant Intellectual Gem. Can't decide which.

    Shocking Film Endings: Fight Club!!!!

Confusing Television Endings: A fair number of the animes I've seen lol.

Shocking Television Endings: Way too many to name. The Sopranos. While Torchwood isn't yet over, if I were to consider Torchwood COE a standalone mini-series, then definitely that.

I'm still trying to recover from that!

  10. meh, my "ending" is always the beginning...
The ending of the first episode of season 2 - Veronica Mars.
I mean, seriously...we go through the first 36 minutes and there's bunch snark, it seems we're moving into good territory and then Veronica is tricked by her ex-best friend into missing the bus. Well, it just so happens that bus mysteriously runs off the side of a cliff, killing everyone (her ex-friend survives for a few weeks then dies...) I've never gotten over that shock of randomly seeing some smoke over the hill and then BAM, they're all dead!

  11. Good call on Quantum Leap btw. It was kind of depressing, but I always loved it. Sam changed everything because he helped Al. Al was never there to help him. PARADOX!

  12. Movie ending? Planet of the Apes gives you the Uh oh feeling.

This isn't an ending but the insect pit in King Kong was surprising not to mention gross.

Lord of the rings was chuck full of these.

Tv ending. 24 too many to count.

The twilight zone that cornfield episode was disturbing all the way through not just the ending.

Watched the last scene f the sopranos on YT rather confusing to say the least as we never know what happens afterward.

    Profit of course

Heroes Five years Gone left me in goosebumps and shivering all over. Even today I can't bear to watch that episode.

  13. SPOILERS for BSG....

I too am still trying to recover from this ending!! Especially since those four you mentioned were the ones who fought with everything they had for the survival of the fleet and they had the saddest endings!! I still can't watch when Roslin dies, once was more than enough! The series ends for me when she gets into the raptor.

  17. The Mist's ending was "shocking," but I always felt it way too contrived to ever enjoy.

Pay It Forward was the most shocking/confusing to me when I first saw it cause the ending really took me off guard given the tone of the movie before that.

  18. To me it was clear, Tony got killed, screen went black because we were seeing it through his eyes. Life Lesson, everything will eventually catch up with you...

  20. OHH I just thought of one: SALT: it wasn't the best movie ever or anything but the end twist freaked me out... I was like O_O

    ReplyDelete
  21. Lost Highway, Mullholland Drive, Twin Peaks... hell any David Lynch product! I guess the only way his movies could be more shocking to m is if they actually made logical sense for once....... Then again THAT would make me worry too.

  23. Las Vegas ended with a cliffhanger, partially due to the writer's strike. Most shocking was the last image we see of seven months pregnant Delinda who suddenly starts bleeding... The "To Be Continued" legend appears on the screen with the fate of the baby, all old and several new storylines unresolved. .

  24. Shocking ending? Prison Break both shocked and confused me. After all that?! After I faithfully watch, especially through the last couple of seasons - that's all I get?!

  25. I don't understand the people saying that LOST's ending was the most confusing. Maybe if you were referring back to an earlier season finale (or maybe ABC's poor decision to include wreckage footage in the credits) I would understand it, but apart from that, LOST's series finale was laid out in an incredibly straight-forward way thanks to Christian.

For me Pushing Daisies was probably the most shocking (I was honestly really surprised at what Ned and Chuck ended up doing in the very last scene of the finale), and Happy Town wins out for most confusing (seriously... that character hadn't even been introduced beyond us being told that the character was dead, and that turned out not to be true).

Not sure I watch enough movies to vote on them, but I'd definitely put SAW up there as most shocking movie ending (though I totally understand votes for The Mist). I guess the movie ending that confused me the most was SAW 2 since it wasn't until a few hours after I had left the theater that I realized what I had missed and what the twist had been about. Donnie Darko and Memento may have been more confusing overall, but their endings were pretty straightforward.

  26. So true about Happy Town! That was a serious WTF moment if ever there was..... I guess maybe you could call it a shocking twist, but I just saw it as an unfinished series with an end scene that could have been re-shot to end better.
