Awakening - Pilot Review
16 Mar 2011
Cancelled Shows Pilot ShowsThanks to tvmonkey for the heads up.
Let's tackle this one piece by piece, as it's almost entirely misleading.
"Two sisters." Yes. Jenna and Jayce (and, note to new screenwriters out there... try to not name main characters with the same first letter, and if you must, at least make the names different lengths, because not only can it be confusing to a skimming reader... you can interchange them and not notice... like Glenn and William did once or twice).
"On the verge of adulthood." Well, Jenna Lestrade is 30, and Jayce is 25 even though she ACTS like she's 16. So, no.
"Who find themselves on opposite sides of a zombie uprising." Easily the most confusing part of the logline. How the hell are two sisters going to be on opposites sides of A ZOMBIE UPRISING!? And have that be part of a continuing series?
Here's what the logline isn't telling you.
Jenna and Jayce are both zombies.
Yes, gentle readers, the zombies in Awakening are walking, talking, sentient beings with an ability to fit into normal life and, on a mere whim, "zomb out" meaning go from a "normal" look to, y'know, decayed flesh. Also they age and can have babies.
It's... a departure, for sure.
There's a point made by a zombie about how human (or "pre-dead") movies present them as lumbering, thoughtless brain-eaters. But... isn't that what fans of zombie movies like? Isn't that what they're looking for? I get that you want your zombies to be different. But you've basically just made them into undead cannibals. The mindless, decayed, ravenous horror is what's so frightening!
And, of course, Jenna, an ADA and a recovering bulimic when we meet her, is the family's "vegetarian" zombie (there's always a vegetarian...) meaning she doesn't eat human flesh. She's trying to fit into human society and even has a human boyfriend, Matt, who doesn't know her secret. Her parents don't know about him, either (there's a lot of "racism" overtones to the whole zombie vs human thing).
Jayce is an "organic" zombie. She likes her meat fresh. She likes to hunt. Which is a problem for her parents, because the whole "zombie" thing isn't out there in human society. They don't know zombies still exist. They did know, once, back in the 60s, when there was an "Awakening" which seems to be the "uprising" the logline refers to. Evan, Jenna and Jayce's father, is a survivor of the war (and a battle at a nearby tourist trap called Dellamore that gave me hope because it was a vague, off-hand reference to a hilarious zombie film with Rupert Everrett called Dellamorte Dellamore), and doesn't want to see that happen again.
So he and his wife, Eunice, get corpses from a restaurant, Macoute's, that has suppliers from morgues, medical labs, pathologists, etc. And the flesh is cooked.
The moment I stopped reading the script as a seriously toned zombie story and said, "wait, I think this is supposed to be campy horror comedy" was when, at the family dinner, Evan asks Eunice to pass him the lady fingers.
Y'know, like, a bowl of real lady's fingers.
Groan.

I already made fun of this a lot. After reading this I just got insanely mad how this piece of shit network butchers the idea of zombies into some sort of trendy vampire-like story. I said it before, but I really like to way Romero used zombies as a metaphore for the downfall of human culture and society. And I really liked that The Walking Dead stays away from the term "zombie" within its story.
ReplyDeleteAlthough it would be kind of fun to see how incredibly ridiculous this show will be, I hope this doesn't get picked up, because I sure as hell don't want zombies to be used and seen the way vampires are currently often pictured.
This does to zombies what Twilight did to vampires. It ruins them. Period. I don't get why this generation of writers tries to take an historic icon of the horror monster pantheon and then turns it on its head and makes it warm and fuzzy. It's like taking a Tarantino movie and editing out all the cursing and violence... it is just not the same anymore.
ReplyDeleteThis is going to FLOP BIGTIME.! I wouldn't watch it if you payed me.Thank you very much.!Hope they dont cancel any shows for this peice of shit.!
ReplyDeleteI have a feeling it will get picked up and get a million or two viewers a night.
ReplyDeleteThere is no accounting for taste, the CW's taste, or the CW in general!
I doubt the typical CW viewer knows much about zombies so it will probably be a hit in the 18-34 demo...
ReplyDeleteSo basically they're vampires..scratch zombies.. trying to fit into normal human society... and keep their secret of being vampires...scratch zombies... from the rest of the world. Once upon a time humans stumbled on to the vampire ... scratch zombie.. secrets.. but like humans..everyone forgot.. so now vampires....scratch zombies live among us..
ReplyDeleteThey can vamp.. I mean.. zomb out.. randomly and unexpectedly.. and EAT PEOPLE!
Anyone see where I'm going with this lol... Let's not make another Vampire series... let's make it about Zombies with the same rules... Its like True Blood.. for Zombies.. ok wtf?
all i have to say is.... -.-
ReplyDeleteIt's different, I'll give it that. A part of me wants to see it picked up just so I can see how the CW plans to sell the show in the promos.
ReplyDeleteHonestly, the thing that bothers me is not exactly the plot itself it is the use of "zombie" and how she completely changed up the traditiona ldefinition. Had she created her own word or usd something less iconic like a golem, wraith, shade or even something generic like 'walker', I may think it sounds much more interesting.
ReplyDeleteI think entertainment should't be taken so seriously. There are zombies that can lead a normal life...so what? =)
ReplyDeleteI will give a chance for the series, can be interesting, especially because it has two female characters as protagonists, a rare thing nowadays. The cast is very good so far, and I can see this show having a wicked sense of humour if done right.
I'm afraid so.
ReplyDeleteHey i am going to give this a shot, since Titus Welliver will be in this
ReplyDeletethey do not call themselves Zombies
ReplyDeleteThat's how I feel too. Many shows sound ridiculous or outright terrible by their pilot scripts but turn out ok. Titus always seems to be on good series, or maybe he makes them good?
ReplyDeleteFor me this has nothing to do with taking the business serious or not. I'm in for making fun of the genre if it's done well. Shaun of the Dead for example was a brilliant zombie comedy, I loved it.
ReplyDeleteBut this is just taking an idea and taking into the exact opposite direction. There is and should be nothing "sexy" and "trendy" about zombies, but yet this is exactly what CW is trying to do. I've been a gore and horror fan for many years and even though I'm not the genre freak I used to be anymore, I still enjoy a good zombie movie and such a show is just an affront to me.
HA! So are they undead-Americans, decaying-Americans..unliving or are they life challenged?
ReplyDeleteO well, If this makes it to pilot I wil lbe checking it out even if it sounds silly. I have been pleasantly surprised before tuning into a pilot I thought sounded sketchy at best....
I think I'll just stick to THE WALKING DEAD
ReplyDeleteWho wants to start the pool: how long Awakening will last before being cancelled?
ReplyDeleteMy money's on five episodes.
Ok, this is actually much, much worse than I was expecting. And I wasn't expecting it to sound good either.
ReplyDeleteAwakening is kinda off title.. they should rename it to True Brains
