Fringe - Producers Discuss the Pregnancy
12 Feb 2011
Cancelled ShowsHey Guys,
After much speculation, the truth was revealed in Friday night's episode of Fringe: The other Olivia (Anna Torv) is pregnant with Peter's baby.
As if the two universes couldn't be more complicated, the producers of the Fox series tell TVGuide.com exclusively that there will be much larger things to come. Will Walternate (John Noble) use Bolivia's baby to lure Peter (Joshua Jackson) back to the alternate universe? The sinister answer may surprise you.
Fringe: Is Alt-Olivia pregnant?
TVGuide.com: Why make Bolivia pregnant? Was this your way of humanizing the other universe?
J.H. Wyman: Yes. It's what the alternate universe is doing and who they are really is why they're human to us. There will be some much larger things to come, definitely.
TVGuide.com: It seems as though Walternate is going to use Bolivia's pregnancy to get Peter back to the alternate universe.
Jeff Pinkner: Well, actually, I'm not sure that's what's going to happen. It's implied that he's going to use the baby to get Peter back, but I think that the baby will provide Walternate with a means to his end, but it's not limited exclusively to getting Peter back.
TVGuide.com: Since the baby has the same DNA as Peter, does that mean it could be used to activate the machine?
Pinkner: That's a possibility. So, as Joel said, it has been our intent from the beginning to complicate the viewers' [main] interests. By exploring this alternate universe, we're trying to, over time, allow people to realize that they're not the bad guy. Walternate is the biggest victim in this entire saga. He had his son stolen from him.
J.J. Abrams: Fringe deserves to live beyond Season 3
TVGuide.com: Bolivia seems to really be in love with Peter, so how is he going to feel about Walternate's plans, whatever they might be?
Pinkner: Bolivia is just a citizen of that world who, heroically, like the fireman, is trying to put out the flames and is now involved in this much larger saga and genuinely fell for Peter. You'll definitely see repercussions of that line of thinking. All of this will drive the storytelling towards the back end of the season, for sure. She's also just discovered she's pregnant. There's a whole saga that goes on with that. It causes her to ask questions about herself.
TVGuide.com: Peter and Olivia's relationship is already so strained. Once this news comes out, will it cause a bigger break in their relationship?
Pinkner: This has been a year of self-actualization. People are starting to ask a lot of questions: what they stand for, what they're doing here, what their involvement is and what they're experiencing. I'm looking also at [them] going through changes that may bring their complex relationship to a whole other level. I can definitely assure you that it's not going to fall out in a way that you would expect.
TVGuide.com: Peter has become a machine in a lot of ways. Will this news bring back his humanity, or might it destroy him all together?
Pinkner: We were not trying to suggest that Peter was becoming a machine. The machine is clearly tapped into the darker side of his nature. This is a character who, because of Olivia and Bolivia, who he thought was Olivia, has become more vulnerable and more willing to allow somebody into his heart and to know him, both good and bad, since he was brought to our world. We were using that episode to show Olivia is actually getting through to him... we're trying to earn their relationship in a way that isn't like, "Oh, pretty TV actor, pretty TV actress, they belong together."
Check out the rest of today's news
TVGuide.com: How Peter feels about a particular universe will effect which universe is saved by the machine. So, in learning about this pregnancy, should we all be really worried about the regular universe now?
Pinkner: There's always peril for this universe because it is going to start to break down like over there. I think that as the cards are being laid out for you, you're going to have certain assumptions, but our job is to make sure that we turn over some cards that you didn't even expect to see. So, right now, you may assume that, but it would just be an assumption.
TVGuide.com: Will Bolivia return to the normal universe?
Pinkner: Eventually, I think the characters will all meet up again. But, we're not, at this moment, prepared to say when or where.
TVGuide.com: Each season finale has had a big "what the heck just happened?" moment: showing us the Twin Towers, Olivias being switched... What can we look forward to this year?
Pinkner: There are always going to be big revelations, hopefully earned revelations that you're like, "Oh, my gosh. I never saw it coming and I'm so intrigued and compelled." It's going to be a big event, which will propel us into Season 4 and, hopefully, have you look at the show through a completely different prism and say, "Oh, wow, I never saw that coming."
Fringe airs Fridays at 9/8c on Fox.

Okay, if I get it right, Walternate now wants to use the baby to power up the machine instead of the original Peter *sigh* Call me a whiner but I was so happy that Peter finally got to be special in some way - Olivia is the one with the abilities, Walter is the brain and Peter was just the caretaker, after all - and it looks like the writers are about to take that special something away by using the baby *sigh*
ReplyDeleteInteresting. Maybe it's not one universe has to die for the other to live at all. Maybe just Peter was going to destroy "over there" (willingly or not, with intent or not) as foretold in prophecy, but now this pregnancy or the birth could alter events, or what Peter does with the machine.
ReplyDeleteWho knows really, maybe Blue and Red realities have split due to some yet unknown event and the machine can destroy one of the worlds (as we have all thought) or maybe it can merge them together even. A purple credit screen next year?
That's the problem with a series that has a tagline "imagine the impossibilities", with Fringe there is just too many possibilities to be sure about anything just yet. The baby may not come to term, Fauxlivia could die in labor, and yet everything could be altered by the simple fact the pregnancy happened.
Best part of Fringe is something looks certain to happen but may not. At the last second or at anytime in the show an unexpected event changes all. The writers are masters at blindsiding the audience with a change in direction. The actors handle these changes with perfection.
ReplyDeleteher sister died in childbirth, she's probably scared.
ReplyDeleteits gonna be weird watching next weeks episode knowing that he's a babyDaddy, but he doesn't know it. and poor Olivia, she's going to go darn near catatonic when she finds out.
ReplyDeleteyeah, but why would he need the baby? i mean, by reasoning, if the baby could operate the machine so should walternate, right? same dna... i don't think that's it, but who knows.
ReplyDeletei keep feeling worse and worse for olivia!! seriously, what has she done?? she doesn't deserve all the crap that's happened and is happening in her life........
ReplyDeleteWalternate didn't deserve to have his son stolen from him...nor did he deserve his world to become a hell on earth either...
ReplyDeleteyour a kate fan, Awesome! and...
ReplyDeleteI agree. I think that when she finds out that feauxOlivia is pregnant with peter's baby she's gotta go near catatonic with thenews and everything else that has been going on with her and her emotions after being tourtured over on the other side.
Peter as well, if he thinks he's confused now, wait until the news breaks and he will be even more confused.
1. In the last scene Walternate says that she will access to any resources that she needs...what does he mean by that.
ReplyDelete2. I do feel bad for FeuxOlivia, but at the same time sh brought it on herself when she chose to continue with the mission after getting involved and "falling for Peter" and continuing to lie for her.
3. Well, at least I hope that this baby gets her to start thinking about the right things, and doing what is right for the baby, and maybe work with us now and not against us. p.s. This is not a transuniversal baby because both parents are from the same universe, it was just conceived in the alt universe from its origins. And for some reason, I get the feeling that its a boy but we'll see.
4. We are supposed to gain sympathy for Walternate and be glad that he has moral bounderies, but I still think that he has another motive. And I"m not so sure he won't use Feaux"s baby for his own means (the machine maybe.)
5. How will Peter find out, and what in the world is he going to tell Olivia. If he thinks he''s confused now he just needs to wait unitl the news breaks.
All good questions... here are my responses for the little it's worthlol
ReplyDelete1. I honestly think he was being benevolent here. No alterior motives... not that he won't take advatage of the baby, but I felt it was a sincere "you're my "daughter" now since you're having my son's baby"
2. No sympathy for Fauxlivia myself ether. She took on the mission as a good soldier and was willing to pay the consequences after.
3. I had thought of this in the same way as you... two parents from Red with conception in Blue. Will the fact that it was conceived in Blue have any effect? I can see both sides of what Fauxlivia could do next... want to protect both worlds now or protect her own Red even more strongly than before... I too think it's a boy, but not sure why.
4. I am not sure they are trying to make us "like" him more or make Walternate more sympathetic exactly... maybe just see him as more than 'that guy trying to destroy our world'. I think he is legitimately happy to have a connection to his stolen son. But that does not rule out his willingness to use the pregnancy or baby for his purposes either. I think he will do whatever it takes to achieve his goals, but we still do not know EXACTLY what his goals are. Destroy Blue? Save Red (does not necessarily mean destroying Blue)? Reclaim his son? Or something else altogether we have not had hints at yet...
5. Yeah, how and when Peter finds out about the pregnancy will be a huge moment... maybe only surpassed the rest of this season by who tells or how Olivia finds out! I can't see anyone coming over her to inform him... maybe more shifter torture? Maybe Peter will uncover the dual universe type writer and read it himself? Maybe Red will find a way to "pull" Olivia or Peter over there? Maybe Sam has some dual universe insight and already knows? There is definitely more to Sam than we know so far.... So many possibilities!
It's such perfect juxtaposition! Walter is responsible for all these problems but we feel sympathetic to him... and Walternate has been nothing but a victim in this and we (mostly) consider him the bad guy.
ReplyDeleteYeah I think Walternate was being genuine too. But it was still creepy. Maybe it's because we're not used to seeing a human side from him. I don't know. If he's not willing to experiment on children in general then I don't think he would be willing to experiment on his own grandchild especially when all he's wanted was to get his only son back who was stolen from him and save his world. But I could be wrong. What I'm interested to find out is what was he like before his son was stolen from him?
ReplyDeleteActual who creeps me out more than Walternate is Alt-Brandon. That guy really has no morals. He was the one who wanted to dissect Olivia's brain for study. He doesn't seem to be bothered by anything they're doing. Walternate didn't want to experiment on children but Alt-Brandon was all for it.
I not only didn't feel bad for Fauxlivia, I also felt a bit of sweet satisfaction that she finally had to pay the price for what she did. I know that that's what she was assigned to do but now she actually has to feel the consequences of that now. She couldn't think that she could mess up Olivia and Peter's life without messing up her own with Frank. I feel really bad for Frank though. Yeah... I guess I really don't like Fauxlivia. It's hard to feel sorry for her when she was the one who caused all that devastation.
I don't think Fauxlivia feels as negatively about our world as she did and I don't think she completely trusts Walternate either. But I guess we'll have to wait and see what she decides.
My guess is that someone will come to Peter with the news. Maybe they will "pull" him over but that would be dangerous for him. He's already crossed over three times. And if they manage to pull Olivia over they'll probably try to kill her again. It's hard to say how he'll find out.
Poor Peter. He's so conflicted and lost right now not to mention he's really trying to make things right with Olivia again. I don't know what he's going to think after he finds this out. And Poor Olivia. She's trying so hard to pick up the pieces and move on with life. This is really going to throw them.
Brandon is deinitely up for anything 'over there', but while that creeps me out a lil... I also find it a fun change of pace.
ReplyDeleteI have some sympathy for Fauxlivia, because I don't think Walternate has been truthful with her, but it's a small amount. Frank more so, but frankly I don't give a damn about him (background character to me) much at all....
I don't think Walternate will experiment on the baby or with the pregnancy, but that is not to say he won't use them to control Fauxlivia or Peter (if he can) or just take advantage of them in any way he can....
And Peter thought he was confused now... Not only a destroyer of his own world or the world he came from, not only heightened aggressiveness lately, cheated out of true love by Fauxlivia, damage out of his control to one of the relationships he cherishes most (Olivia) and now ... a baby on the way which makes every aforementioned element THAT much worse, but will also be a constant reminder to Olivia. Assuming it comes to term and she finds out... but yeah... Peter has the weight of the world on his shoulders... scratch that... TWO WORLDS!
oh i agree!! i loathe walternate for what he's trying to do, but he is the real victim in this story! it's awful what walter did! because of the kind of person walter is now and the way the writers are portraying him, and because he's the one in our side, it's hard to feel anything besides sympathy and pitty for him, but he was a real monster back in those days!
ReplyDeleteOk fauxlivia is pregnant and we should all be in love with the other universe? I don't buy that, if they wanted us like fauxlivia then they bshouldn't have her killing deaf guy who was no threat to her with a shot in the head like she was an assassin on a missioon.
ReplyDeleteShe can have tripplets and genuine feeling for Peter, i don't care, assassinating an innocent non threatning guy,t will be the difference between the two olivias, our olivia went back to save Alt-Broyles' son's life at the risk of not being able to come back, that is something i know faulivia wouldn't do. that pregnancy as a trick to get me invested in fauxlivia's fate is a waste of time.
