Supernatural - Weekly Poll - Favorite Episode (Season One)

5 Jan 2011

Favorite Episode (Season One)

Nominations are mostly in and unfortunately, they did not narrow much down at all. That means this week could be the hardest to vote for of all. Some general statistics as of 8:00 pm St. Louis, USA time:

Of the 126 episodes eligible for nomination, 99 episodes were nominated. Only 27 episodes did not make it on anyone's top 12 list. That's amazing since many of us proved we could come up with a top 12 least favorite episodes list pretty quickly. I guess it shows that Supernatural has something to appeal to every taste. It also shows that for the most part, people find something to like in even the worst episodes.  Case in point, I liked a lot of the dialogue in Route 666 even if it had the worst plot by far and some of the most atrocious acting ever seen on Supernatural.

Season 1 and season 4 tied for the most nominated episodes at 17 each.  Season 3 had the least amount of episodes to NOT be nominated.  Before people remind me that it was the shortest season, it also had the highest percentage of episodes nominated with 81%.  Season one and four had 77% of their episodes nominated, season 2 had 73% with 16 episodes nominated, and season 5 had the lowest percentage with 64%.

However, when you look at actual votes, Season 2 had the most with 112 nominations and season 5 was right behind with 103.  Season 3 with 92 and season 4 with 81 came next.  Season 1 only had 58 nominations.  What a difference a couple of episodes can make.  Mystery Spot had 24 nominations, the most of any episode, while Changing Channels had 21.  In fact, comedic episodes fared very well in these nominations.

More statistics to follow but for now, happy voting!  Don't forget to comment about your favorites.  We obviously have a wide variety of opinions and it's more fun when everyone is heard.

By the way, don't forget to participate in the TV Overload poll.  They are trying to scientifically measure which show has the strongest online fanbase, based on how much people participate in the fandom.  It does ask demographic questions but nothing that can identify you individually.  Basically you answer those, pick your favorite show (Supernatural maybe?) and answer a few questions about it.  It doesn't take very long but it would be nice to see how wide the fanbase is for Supernatural.  My guess is that we skew a whole lot older than most of our detractors suspect.

  1. So. Difficult. T___T

Skin, Home, Asylum, Benders, Something Wicked and Devil's Trap are my top for this season. How the hell am I gonna choose?! Gr, narrow it down to Skin, Home, Devil's Trap. Guh. I'ma go with Skin. Home and DT made me wibble too hard for me to watch it over and over again. Asylum too, so mad at Sammy for shooting Dean. Something Wick brought us the first of the Wee!Chesters, who were adorable. But I have to choose between Skin and Benders. That smile when Dean finds Sam or that ending fight when Dean shot uh, himself.

Winner: Skin. It's the first on my Supernatural marathon tomorrow actually, shoulda figured.

  2. Nope.
    Not voting.
    *folds arms*
    Can't make me.

  3. can't decide
looking at the least, it just seems like every episode is up there!!
    i can't pick 1!!!
maybe i'll come back later and attempt to decide

    ReplyDelete
  4. Wow. This is harder than I thought!

    ReplyDelete
  5. just completed that poll thing, is it sad that i ticked yes or the highest thing for every question??
i think i might be a wee bit obsessed with supernatural

    ReplyDelete
  6. I had to vote for Faith. That episode in general really just hits home with me. Honorable mentions though would be the Pilot, Home and Devil's Trap.

    ReplyDelete
  7. You are in good company here my friend. The only thing I didn't check yes to was going to a con and that's only because none of my St. Louis friends watch Supernatural so they won't go with me. :-(

    ReplyDelete
  8. haha! If you are, I am too......do you think if we met in person we'd talk at the same time like Sam and Dean? Or finish each other's sentences?

    ReplyDelete
  9. Dahne..... Why are you killing my brain? I CAN'T CHOOSE A FAVORITE! /dies

    ReplyDelete
  10. Mwahhhh! As my mother would say, "You got yourselves into this mess yourselves." If you all would have just nominated the same episodes as me, there would only be 4 choices. :-P Much easier.

    ReplyDelete
  11. i had that same problem. i managed to convince one of my friends to come because two weeks before i got him to start watching season 5

    ReplyDelete
  12. thank you for making the decision just that much harder.
right now i'm pretty much torn between scarecrow, pilot, faith and bloody mary

    ReplyDelete
  13. i wouldn't be surprised at all, we pretty much say the same stuff here.
i love this site, and these polls :D

    ReplyDelete
  14. /dispatches dead brain in retaliation against Dahne

    ReplyDelete
  15. which 4 might i ask?
and btw, 4 choices would not make it any easier, not by a long shot!

    ReplyDelete
  16. ugh these r gonna be the the hardest polls to make a choice on. I love every episode so much. For season 1 though, I chose Hell House b/c thats 1 of the funniest of the season and I always love the comedic episodes

  17. Why it's hard to choose in the season 1 poll? - Part 2

    14. Nightmare - In all honesty, this isn't one of my favorites either because Max annoyed the living daylights out of me. I was happy when he died. However, it did show us what Sam could do and how much it freaked them both out. It also set up the idea that Sam was not the only special child.

    15. The Benders were what's the word that means creepy to the nth degree. I'm usually good with the whole supernatural thing, but anything that could really happen makes my skin crawl. Plus, their hygiene alone could scare someone. However, this one does not get my vote because the middle part dragged on too much.

    16. Shadow was too whiny but surprisingly I liked the John reunion. Yeah, I can't believe it either. The hug and tentative reconciliation even moved me. I liked it even better when John left though. However, for me it was the shock of seeing Meg bite it and the daeva storyline that was the best part. Of course, Meg came right back and that part became moot.

    17. I'm not a fan of the future Ghostfacers so they irked me every single time they were on the screen. The rest of the episode was good though, especially the pranks. The tulpa was kind of lame to me too.

    18. Something Wicked - loved this one. Something about the Winchesters working with kids that really moves me. I loved how Michael was the original mini-Dean before Ben. I also liked the flash backs, which gave us a clearer picture of how they grew up. Have I mentioned that I hate John? This one is unique though, in that I liked the PiP more than the rest of the story. The fact that Michael was willing to put himself at risk to save his brother resonated with me. Of course, now it's the only theme in town. This one has a shot for my vote.

    19. Provenance is another that may get my vote. Again, it is largely due to the PiP. I think Sarah is the best PiP this show has ever had and I really hope they bring her back in another one-shot. After all, they drive all over the country. Why wouldn't they run into past people again? I think this episode encompasses all that is good about Supernatural. It was scary - little girl with huge razor - ikes! It had good action and humor as well. All in all, it's one of episodes I suggest to people when they want to know what Supernatural is like - no mytharc to weigh a newbie done, just SPN goodness.

    21. In my opinion, the best thing about Salvation was the the opening previouslies to Carry on My Wayward Son. The rest of the episode went downhill from there. I wasn't interested in the John chases Meg plot line at all and the end swung from way out emo to great John's been captured. I tend to be biased against the penultimate episodes though. I think it's because these are the angsty ones and the finales are the action.

    22. Devil's Trap is one of the best episodes of all in my opinion and it is by far my favorite finale. that's saying something because usually they are awesome. I love the twist of John possessed and the cliffhanger that coined hellatus. But no where was Supernatural any better than the scene between Possessed John and the brothers pinned to the wall. It's my favorite scene of the entire series. I might hate John but Jeffrey Dean Morgan can act! To this day, even though I have seen it 100 times it still gives me chills.

    ReplyDelete
  18. Anything to help. :-P

If it's any comfort, I'm not sure which one I'm going to vote for either.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Hey! Watch it! I think you're confusing me with Doc Benton. I don't like to play with brains.

    ReplyDelete
  20. I nominated Dead in the Water, Faith, Provenance, and Devil's Trap. It was a hard choice because I could have easily gone for Asylum, Scarecrow, Skin, and Something Wicked too. I'm one of those few fans that loved season 1. There are parts of it that I think top every thing that followed, one of which is the Devil's Trap finale. Another is the vulnerability of Faith, back when it wasn't common for the brothers to be dead. And I haven't seen better one-shot PiP's than Michael and Sarah.

    ReplyDelete
  21. So I went with the pilot. As much as I love season one and the majority of its episodes. There's just something about the pilot that always makes me super happy.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Well I've narrowed it down to 5.....

    Skin
    Asylum
    Scarecrow
    Faith
    Devil's Trap

    That's it.
That's as far as I'm going.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Why is this so hard to choose??? And I have the same problem. Salute to Supernatural is coming to Toronto and I can't find anyone to go with me :(. I'm thinking about just going by myself because I've never been to one and I would kill to see them live :). Also I don't remember all three of them coming so close to me at the same time and I don't know if they'll ever do it again.

    ReplyDelete
  24. If you can, I'd say go. If they ever come to St. Louis, I'm going regardless if anyone else comes with me, although I'll probably beg and plead first. However, I can't see flying to California and doing Com-Con by myself. That's way too big and probably not near as much fun.

    ReplyDelete
  25. you forgot Dead Man's Blood. That's the episode where John,Dean & Sam work together to get the Colt from the vamps.

    ReplyDelete
  26. It wasn't nominated before the first poll went up so it isn't included.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Beyond a doubt, Devil's Trap

    ReplyDelete
  28. agreed. season one is my fave season. just because it was so innocent but not at the same time. it's just so different now to what it was back then.

    ReplyDelete
  29. ya i understand that it wasnt nominated. just kinda stunned that it wasnt

    ReplyDelete
  30. Don't feel bad. I did too. I am going to the con in Nashville. I know I'm obsessed. My daughter never stops telling me. A guy at work told everyone, if a black car pulls up out front, and a dark haired guy sticks his head out of the driver's seat and says, "Dean is in the back seat waiting for you," you'll never see her again. He's right.

    ReplyDelete
  31. oh darn, i forgot there was a part two to this!!!
and i was so close to choosing as well!!
i'll be back later with a painfull decision

    ReplyDelete
  32. I think it is because everything was new then and therefore to me more special. The first time we saw a shapeshifter was awesome. Now it's old hat. The first time we saw a brother near death moved me so much, but now real death is getting old. They'll just keep coming back again anyway. The first time we saw a loved one possessed - now who hasn't been possessed. There's something more insular about season 1, almost an innocence in me as a viewer, that was lost in the propulsion to epicness. I miss it.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think those choices are awesome. Could you maybe just possibly narrow it down just a little bit more? I'm pretty sure there isn't an all of the above choice. :-P

Way off topic, but my like button is working again. I am so excited. It's been forever since I have been able to like someone who someone else has already liked. I guess writing Disqus about it really works. If I weren't exhausted from two nights without sleep, I would be liking everyone jsut for the freedom to be able to do it. But I'm going to bed. Have fun deciding - I know you eventually will.

    ReplyDelete
  34. i miss it too.
it's the season i most commonly go back and rewatch

    ReplyDelete
  35. As awesome as Pilot, Skin, and Devil's Trap are...I had to go with Phantom Traveler. That episode showed one of Dean's fears and the whole thing taking place on a plane was pretty exciting, plus it showcased the first demon.

    ReplyDelete
  36. after a lot of debate, i voted pilot. for me, it just started the whole thing off (obviously, its the pilot!)
but it was the borthers first coming together, it ahd the classic lines, the classic music and a classic ghost hunt

    ReplyDelete
  37. Well there should be.
I like the idea of 'all of the above' - that way I can live up to my life's mantra:
'Procrastinate like your life depends on it.'

    ReplyDelete
  38. Yay! You made a choice! Good work!
If you can do it there might be hope for me yet......

    ReplyDelete
  39. For me it was between Faith, Skin, Scarecrow, Asylum, and Nightmare.
I went with Nightmare because it jumpstarted the storyline that leads to Sam becoming the vessel of Lucifer. o.o

    ReplyDelete
  40. must... eliminate.... 8 more....episodes...

    ReplyDelete
  41. of course, the finale is in the lead... that sucks

    ReplyDelete
  42. I eventually chose for 'Home'. I think it got something in it that I hadn't seen before on the show (okay, JDM, but else). I can't quite put my finger on it, but I really liked that episode.

    ReplyDelete
  43. when the 5 seasons are done, could we do a poll with the winner and runner up from each season and see who wins overall?

    ReplyDelete
  44. You should definitely go..I'll go to Jus In Bello II in Rome by myself..No one wanted to come with me.. : (
But think about it..A hotel full of people CRAZY about Supernatural!
I'm sure you'll find someone to talk to... ; )

    ReplyDelete
  45. Devil's Trap hands down!!!
(I'm surprised Dead Man's blood is not in! Because better than J2 is J3 and I loved the interaction between Sam and John in that episode!)

    ReplyDelete
  46. As much as I loved Phantom Traveler, Bloody Mary and Faith, it was down to Something Wicked, Provenance (even though I didn't nominate it) and Devil's Trap.

I just loved Something Wicked. It had the whole package - a scary MOTW, who was after children, Michael the mini Dean and of course the flashbacks. They made this episode so awesome. Seing that kid with a riffle, ready to shoot, his "shoot first, ask questions later" and of course the immortal "watch out for Sammy" get me every time. The relationship between Dean and John is one of the best things about early Supernatural IMO, even though John was such a jerk. But it made me love Dean even more.

Provenance was awesome. Who doesn't love Sarah? Also, a haunted painting that repairs itself, how cool is that? my favourite moment is the OMG by Sam when he sees that painting again after destroying it. LOL so cute.

Devil's Trap is what I ended up voting for as my favoruite finale in the polls we did in the summer. I loved the exorcism they finally managed to do on Meg, but the real girl's death was sad and tragic, yet she still managed to help them find John. And of course, possessed John. Some great acting, some emotional moments and the boys tortured by their possessed father. Just wow. And then comes the cliffhanger, the one that makes you jump up to the ceiling. Seriously, best cliffhanger ever. Also, love the moment when Sam looks in the mirror at the injured Dean in the car and says: "not before everything".

So, in the end my vote goes to Devil's Trap. Family comes first in this show and that episode was all about family.

    ReplyDelete
  47. I'm going with 'Benders'. I love it and it's not gonna get a lot of votes. ;D I think Devil's Trap or Faith are going to be the episodes to beat.

    ReplyDelete
  48. So you're playing Switzerland? ;D

    ReplyDelete
  49. I know. Why don't you use:

    Eeny, meeny, miny, moe,
Catch the Impala by the wheel.
If she honks let her go,
Eeny, meeny, miny, moe, you are it!

    ReplyDelete
  50. Can I just say that I love you guys? :)

I voted for Home. To be honest I don't even know why. I was torn between Home, Devil's Trap, Scarecrow and Faith, and they're all such great episodes.

    ReplyDelete
  51. For me, it came down to Provenance and Faith, but in the end, I just had to go with Faith (which was the only season 1 ep to make it into my top 12). Jensen Ackles' portrayal of Dean facing his own mortality and then dealing with the moral implications of his recovery moves me every time, despite then number of times I've gone back and rewatched the episode.

    ReplyDelete
  52. I'm currently wrestling with Faith and Scarecrow.

Scare Factor: Hmm. Both the reaper and the scarecrow were creepy, but I'll go with the reaper for way back then you couldn't kill them. Point for Faith.

Acting: Phenomonal acting in both. Jared was probably better in Scarecrow but Jensen was really spectacular in Faith. I wasn't really feeling Jensen's performance as much as I usually do in Scarecrow, but both J's were great in Faith. Point for it, then.

Angst: Each of the two epiosdes had a lot of angst in them. Scarecrow had slightly less than Faith. Point for Scarecrow.

Humour: I can't remember much for this. The only one-liner I can remember is "I hope your apple pie is freakin' worth it!" so Scarecrow gets the point.

Good Emotional Moments: Faith wins this hand down. Others can explain it better than I, so read someone else's comment.

    ReplyDelete
  53. I was stuck between the Pilot and Devil's Trap, but I had to go with Pilot.. So hard though!

    ReplyDelete
  54. Hehe...Your comment, I like!

Don´t worry, Jillyanne, you are braver than me. You can narrow it down to five. I am not even that far.

    ReplyDelete
  55. Oh I could never do that.......this is far too important ;P
Eeny, meeny etc is fine for the small things but this requires serious, considered, rational thought....
And I love your SPN twist on it Claudia......

    ReplyDelete
  56. OK, I voted for skin. Why? Hmmm, hard to say...
Liked the story for sure. And Dean being a shapeshifter (or vice versa). The fighting scene was good - a little Karate Kid like. There where many good things in that episode. But I voted for it because of the end. The shapeshifter trying to kill Sam, than Dean shoots him and rips of the amulet, like saying "you can´t have my brother".... Maybe I am reading too much into that, but I like to believe...

    ReplyDelete
  57. For me this one was easy. Provenance is THE favorite for me, so obviously my vote went for that. But I probably should avoid the site when it comes to Season 3...

    ReplyDelete
  58. Same reason I voted for it :)

    ReplyDelete
  59. Well hell......
    Ok......I freakin' hate this.....
    Ok....Devil's Trap.
    There I did it.....
But I didn't want to ....now I'm going to hell for choosing one above the others......

    ReplyDelete
  60. You did well, little Padawan! Good choice you made...

    ReplyDelete
  61. aaawww man that hurt like a SOB....

    ReplyDelete
  62. agreed, season 3 is gonna be terrible to choose one...

    ReplyDelete
  63. Argh, this poll is so difficult to vote in, and an know that the ones after this is going to be worse! Thank you so much for putting together the statistics, it was very fun to read. :) Since it would be so hard if I sat down and made an actual calculated descision of which episode deserve my vote I would be sitting here all night. So I decided to lay my vote between the episodes that I have rewatched most times which is the Pilot, Bloody Mary, Scarecrow, The Benders, Hell house and Provenance. My vote went to Bloody Mary because of the monster, the lovely PiP and the intresting development in Sam's storyline.

    ReplyDelete
  64. This one is actually pretty easy for me. I loved all of season one, after all, it is what got me hooked from the beginning, but my favorite ep is easily Faith. From seeing Sam's need to save his brother to Dean's need to understand why anyone deserved to die for him, I think it's the first time we saw the true characterizations of the Winchesters. Sam's determination and willingness to do what he thought was right, Dean's belief that he wasn't worth it and his willingness to sacrifice himself for an innocent who was... it sealed my loyalty and admiration for these two guys and has been the basis for everything since. See, I can make a decision. Jilly? Your turn!

    ReplyDelete
  65. Devil's trap for me.

Next, I would pick the Pilot followed by Faith.

I also really enjoyed Scarecrow, Bloody Mary, Skin, Hell House and The Benders but I don't think that they really have any business in a "top 10" list.

    ReplyDelete
  66. I agree, it's so difficult. Season one is my favorite season of Supernatural.

    ReplyDelete
  67. Heh! That's funny! Did you vote eventually?

    ReplyDelete
  68. I beat you to it Sue.....didn't think I had it in me didya? <3

    ReplyDelete
  69. glad to see you made your choice.
i understand the diffuculty it was to do so.
and a good choice it was too!

    ReplyDelete
  70. season 3 has my all time fave, mystery spot, so even though there are other amazing choices (jus in bello) i don't think it will be too hard for me to choose

    ReplyDelete
  71. I am going to have to go with Home. Just b/c it connected all of the dots. It was some great acting by Jared and Jensen. Dean with his heartbreaking call to his dad. Sam getting to see his mother for the first time. Knowing that Papa Winchester was there with them all along. Missouri and Dean "Boy, you put your feet on my table and I will wack you with a spoon." :) or "Dean is going to clean this up for you." Learning about their childhood and their dad's life. So I am voting for "Home"

    ReplyDelete
  72. It will be part of the week of the new episode.

    ReplyDelete
  73. Ahhh, so you did. *pats Jilly on head* Good girl. :) Devil's Trap was probably my second choice, followed closely by The Benders, The Pilot and Something Wicked. Character traits in these have carried them thru the entire series. It just occurred to me that these polls will be way easier than character/monster polls. I think I can pinpoint my fave from each season. I didn't get here in time to nominate, so I hope all my faves will be there. Now to go watch the People's Choice Awards and cross my fingers we win... and that they actually say it on the freakin' program this time. *sigh* No respect.

    ReplyDelete
  74. Very well put. This encompasses much of what I love best about Faith.

    ReplyDelete
  75. Between Faith and Devil's Trap, I vote Faith. Why? Because Devil's Trap is winning. Yep, that's the whole reason. I like them both equally. On to season 2, where I have absolutely no hesitation in my voting. It's a nice change.

    ReplyDelete
  76. between Home and Devil's Trap... Eventually chose Home. :D because Devil's trap ends in one of the most I-can't-wait-to-see-what-happens-later (which ain't happy) cliffhangers I have ever seen in my entire life and we had to wait months to know that.
Home was awesome, from beginning to end (cause it actually had an end), and I simply love that Missouri lady. I wish she had been on the show more times!

    ReplyDelete
  77. 17 episode seriously? I hate you... Skin Faith and The benders and then provenance...

Okay Provenance is only for the awesome caracter of Sarah so I can cut.

hum................. ARGH! And then I look at the list and im like... hum that ep is awesome too. Devil's trap and Asylum :DDDDDD aw. Damn it.

But I HAVE to go with The Benders cause I watched it 3 times in a row once hehehe. I think I like it a lot. And it's so crazy original and it was my first episode of supernatural ever without me even knowing it. In french so of course it sucked and I saw the part with hot jared in a cage and what can I say 3 years later I thought "hey what was that show with the two cousin.. looked okay" Yeah cause i thought they were cousin, in y defense thats what dean said in that episode ahaha. ANY WAY!

    The benders it is!

    ReplyDelete
  78. WHAT ? They are going to toronto... F*** ME. sorry lol I'm 8 hours from toronto and im going to vancon and damn its NOT cheap

    ReplyDelete
  79. I see, so you like 'classics'. Lol The pilot was certainly a classic episode. A perfect little TV movie. I love the shadow fight between Sam and Dean.

    ReplyDelete
  80. Aww! *hug* The Benders needs more love for being so amazingly creepy.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Awe, yeah, sorry. They're coming in October but it's really early yet. The tickets aren't even on sale, it's understandable you missed hearing about it. On the good side Van Con will be totally worth it and amazing so it will be money well spent. :)

    ReplyDelete
  82. yeah yeah... I'm still pissed ahahah! but bow I think I'll just go to both and BE SUPER HAPPY MOUHAHAHAH! General package is like 90$ not bad :D
    SPN POWER

    ReplyDelete
  83. yes it was, i loved every moment of it

    ReplyDelete
  84. Pilot, Skin, Asylum, Faith, Something Wicked, Provenance, Devil's Trap. That's seven. Okay... Faith, Something Wicked, Provenance, Devil's Trap. Now this is reallly hard. Watched those four again (to be fair). Even though it pains me. I vote for Something Wicked. This episode pulls at my heart strings every time. I loved Michael (original mini-Dean). I loved the flashbacks to Dean and Sam's terrible childhood (thanks, John). Ithought the monster was scary. The old lady "sleeping with my peepers open" still cracks me up especially Dean's reaction. But also being a big sister, I relate to the "do anything for your little brother", (in my case, little sister) mentality. Hope that made sense.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Had to vote Hell House because of Hell Hounds.
