Hmmm... I didn't think the show had aired yet... so why is it unfortunate exactly? Is the UK version unfortunate too or just the American copy? I am looking forward to it and have enjoyed the UK version since I started watching it 2 years ago.
No. I was skeptical at first since the UK series is still running, but the casting was so spot on I got interested. Then seeing the trailers and interviews, it seems it may be less campy than the UK version and I am getting more interested as time goes on. You are not alone!
The original show is always going to have a special place in my heart, so I'm going to give this remake a shot. It looks better than I thought, although Mark Pellegrino looks kind of weird... :P
Yea, they reeeeally tried to make him look more like Herrick than he does naturally! I mean he is a natural blonde too but THAT blonde looks so out of place and fake on him.
Gads!! I had not thought of watching them both at the same time!! That will be very strange indeed!!! I am waiting to see if the series overall tone (humor, mood, special effects, soundtrack etc) varies from the UK version, since small tonal changes can seriously affect the over all show. I am guessing they won't have that same almost campy humor that so many British shows seem to have, but I am not sure that I would miss that style of humor of the series were more dark in tone and well executed.
I'm just not a fan of American copies. If a show needs to take the exact storyline, that's bad enough. But they cast the 'Annie' as a WOC, stole Aidan Turner's name, even dressed them the exact same then I have very, very little faith. If they can't even show a little originality by dressing the ghost differently than I don't hold out much hope for the story. Cases in point: Life on Mars, Viva Laughlin (Blackpool), Cracker, Coupling, The Eleventh Hour, Teachers, etc. It's not the same as shows like Skins or Law & Order, which are known for changing casts and plots so they go back and forth with success of plot and character. Unfortunately, when it's a remake of a smart, well-made show popular in Britain it rarely translates because the show will never be considered on its own merits, only compared to the original, which is why so many are cancelled after only a few episodes. I would imagine that this lasts one season as SyFy has been unwilling to give even their better shows like Caprica or mediocre ones like Stargate Universe very many chances and those were based on solid foundations of previous shows with tons of fan appeal.
In short this show is unfortunate because a) even if it's the best show ever, it's a remake of a smart, well-written British show and will always, therefore, be looked down upon; b) because rather than deciding to do a remake while developing their own style it very much seems like they're trying to copy the British one in casting, tone and style and c) because it's on Syfy rather than a network that gives genre shows more chances and just generally makes them of a better quality like Starz, HBO, Showtime, etc.
Meh. I'll give it a try but I'm pretty disappointed they couldn't even go for their own look. I mean, dressing the people the EXACT same and even stealing an actor's name for a character?
With a show premise of "a vampire, a werewolf, and a ghost living together," you kind've do need some campy humour in there... if anything, to show you're not taking yourself too seriously. That's what I'm worried about with the American version, that they'll forget to joke about what they're doing every now and then, and go into it too quick with darkness and seriousness.
NOTE: Name-calling, personal attacks, spamming, excessive self-promotion, condescending pomposity, general assiness, racism, sexism, any-other-ism, homophobia, acrophobia, and destructive (versus constructive) criticism will get you BANNED from the party.
This show is so unfortunate.

ReplyDeletegive it a try...I mean its going to be alright I think not brilliant though.
ReplyDeleteAm I the only one who is actually looking forward to this?

ReplyDeleteI am... though it'll be odd watching both versions of the show at the same time.
ReplyDeleteStill, it'll be interesting to see the cultural differences and whether they can pull off the humour.
I think the weirdness of it adds to the character he's playing. He was always quite creepy in the original.
