According to Deadline Mekhi Phifer has been cast as Rex in the upcoming season of Torchwood. Head over to Deadline for the full story. Here is the description of the character of Rex:
He’s 28, the golden boy.
Has been, all his life. Harvard education, fast-tracker in the C.I.A., destined for success. Though he’s never taken it easy – Rex hustles, seduces and campaigns to get where he is today. He can talk his way into anything, then charm his way out, fast. He’s made a lot of enemies, but his friends and lovers would defend him to death. His choice of career is significant. Someone like Rex could make a fortune in Wall Street, or Hollywood. But choosing the C.I.A. says a lot about him: that for all his swagger, he does believe in justice. And will fight for it.
Slowly but surely, we see him make friends. He’s thrown together a bunch of people known as Torchwood, the only people who might have the answer to a global mystery. To Rex, at first, they’re a bunch of freaks. Welsh women and World War 2 Captains, what’s that about?! But as they race from one crisis to another, dodging assassins, blackmail, corruption and conspiracy, from Washington to Wales and the slums of Shanghai, Rex forges friendships in the heat of fire. He learns to trust his new colleagues. And they realize that this dangerous, dazzling, reckless man is the best friend they could ever have, in a world going to hell.
They frighten us, men like Rex. We wish we were him; we never will be.

Never in a million years would I have pegged Mekhi Phifer for a role on Torchwood. Not even as an extra.
ReplyDeleteI miss Mekhi on Lie To Me, and I love Torchwood, so this is great news.
ReplyDeleteIt is hard to see any traditional American TV industry actor as a Torchwood actor isn't it?!? That said... he may be ok in the role. I am leary of the whole Torchwood team in the states thing as it is, but not due to him at all. Just that it is such a 180 degree change for the show to make in my eyes.
ReplyDeleteMe too - but I'm happy it's him, and not Chad Michael Murray or any of the other rumored names in the first mix. At least I know Mekhi's work and like it.
ReplyDeleteThankfully I had not heard the CMM rumor! Yeah, Mekhi is a pretty strong actor and done some amazing work in movies and on TV.
ReplyDeleteHum sorry but I thought Rex was supposed to be a really handsome guy?
ReplyDeleteWhy the hell did they choose Mekhi, I mean I like the actor but well let's be honnest, he's not really the kind of guy we expect to see in a show like Torchwood ... I am afraid I won't like this new season, Ianto "out" first and Mekhi Phifer "in" then...I want Ianto back, come on it's SF no? Nothing is impossible! ^^
As a fan of Torchwood and also Mekhi's work on ER and Lie to Me, this is terrific casting. And after all, it's not like he hasn't worked with big name British actors before e.g. Tim Roth and most intriguingly, Alex Kingston who as Professor River Song is already part of the Dr Who universe.
ReplyDeleteWhen I heard Torchwood was moving Stateside, I was worried at the quality of the American/Canadian actors who would flesh out what's left of Torchwood Cardiff. I have no worries now if Mekhi's going into battle alongside John Barrowman and Eve Myles. Good luck to Mekhi, I hope his character sticks around for a while (after what happened to Tosh, Owen and Ianto)...
Wow - Stateside? :O Where have I been! I had no idea of such a change! :D Now I'm even more excited. When is it continuing? Ahh I'm so glad Eve Myles and John Barrowman are still there. <3 I was also surprised (positively!) about this Mekhi news. Can't wait! Now it makes more sense to me though. I thought they would ship Mekhi to the UK for filming. lol
