Best One-Shot PiP (Season 1)
Nominations are in and it's time to vote for the Best One-Shot PiP. I will be adding a new poll every day until all 5 seasons are covered. Each poll will be open for approximately 2 days although today's will be more like 1 and 1/2 days. If you don't see your nomination, it's probably because the person was in more than one episode or I moved the nomination to next week's question on best one-shot monster. That would include Madison from Heart, Casey from Sin City, Dracula from Monster Movie, and Nick from Sex and Violence.
Don't forget to comment below. It makes the whole voting thing more interesting. Happy voting!

In my opinion, season 1 had the best one-shot PiP's. There were a lot of them and most of them stuck out in my mind. I guess that's why I really loved season 1 even if it wasn't others' favorite. For me, a good PiP stands out among the others and does something to actively help or make things more interesting. Characters like Lori from Hookman don't fit the bill since she mostly whined and screamed a lot. Others like Sarah Blake from Provenance really struck me because even though she was freaked out she became part of the solution. I love how she decided that since her family sold the painting, she was partly responsible for stopping any more murders. She rocked! The only exception is the kids who have guest starred on Supernatural. Maybe it's my background as a teacher but I'm a sucker for the kid episodes, whether they help or not.
ReplyDeleteEven though I nominated mostly kids I ended up voting for Sarah. The kids on SPN have all been amazing actors who had to do some very weird and scary things, so I have lot of love for them <3.........
ReplyDeleteBut Sarah - she had a sense of humor that fitted right in with the boys..... she was anything but a screamy wimpette - and even Dean approved of her.
I liked Rebecca Warren in Skin because she wasn´t the typical "damsel in distress".
ReplyDeleteShe didn´t take the boy´s words for granted but investigated on her own. That´s how she found out, Sam and Dean were lying. I also liked that she and her brother had a history with Sam, which made it harder to watch the boys leave because for me it seemed, saying goodbye to Rebecca equals saing goodbye to the normal life Sam wished for himself. After that I can´t remember Sam saying anything about a normal life again. So Rebecca was not just a strong PiP but a "milestone" in one of the boys life.
I voted for Sarah, definitely. I loved how once she realized that the painting truly was haunted and the ghost was killing people, she held herself and her father responsible since they were the ones to sell the painting. I loved how she may have been completely scared out of her mind, but still went head first right into the case, insistent on going no matter what and fought along the boys' sides (especially Sam's =P), and in the end it was Sarah who gave the right info in stopping the ghost. So yeah, Sarah for me. The kids were too hard to choose from because I have so much respect for those little actors and what they can pull off, so I went with Sarah instead.
ReplyDeleteSarah! She was amazing and make a very nice couple with Sam. ;)
ReplyDeleteI voted for Missouri, don't actually remember the others.
ReplyDeleteI voted for Sarah from Providence, because she is one of the only female characters that I felt really struck the right note between being vulnerable enough to need protection from the boys and also being strong enough to voice her own opinions and actually be helpful in the situation at hand.
ReplyDeleteI remember I really liked Officer Kathleen in the Benders. She handled her own and got her revenge, but I felt sorry for her because of her brother. I also liked Layla from Faith, because damn, the scene where Dean said he'll pray for her? Heartbreaking. I felt so bad for her in this episode.
ReplyDeleteTough choice...tough choice...
Voted for Sarah but wish I could vote for Layla too :D
ReplyDeleteI voted for Sarah :)
ReplyDeleteOne time, I had a dream where Sarah showed up in one of the newer seasons, and she was pissed at Sam for not coming back to visit her, like he had promised xD Hmm.. that would have been an interesting episode.. :P
:DDD I had one where she were trained by bobby to become a hunter and they (sam) met in s6.
ReplyDeleteOh, HAHAHAHA! :D
ReplyDeleteI voted for Michael, cause I can't help but love the Supernatural kids. And he especially won me, because he was so much like Dean, so protective over his little brother. And Dahne, he did help the boys catch and kill the shtriga, so I guess that makes him a good PiP as well ;)
ReplyDeleteEmily from Scarecrow. I just felt really bad for her and all that she went through. Also, she wasn't immediatly attracted to Dean. I respect her for that.
ReplyDeleteSuper excited for the one shot monster next week - it'll be heated.
Voted Sarah.
ReplyDeletethere were alot of great options there but in the end i went with layla from faith because her story was really sad and the boys never managed to save her in the end :(
ReplyDeletevery excited for the monster one :D
If I had to list my top 10 one-shot PiP's of all time, 8 of of them would come from season 1, which should have made it a hard contest for me. I love the SPN kids, especially Lucas and Michael. Lucas (and Andrea) has my heart because it was Dean's ability to relate to Lucas that won me over and made Supernatural must-see-TV for me. Michael was the original mini-Dean, but more importantly was willing to put himself on the line in order to kill the shtriga and save his brother. He was a teenager who did more than most of the adult PiP's on this show were willing to do and that makes him awesome. Kat was another teenager who went beyond most adults. She willing let a ghost whisper in her ear even though she had no way of knowing it wouldn't hurt her. She was also handy with a gun, staying functional when her boyfriend couldn't.
ReplyDeleteI think Haley Collins tends to get short-shafted in polls. She also took matters in stride and did what needed to be done to save her brother. What I loved about her was when she was confronted with the supernatural, she didn't ask endless questions and act like the Winchesters were insane. Instead, she looked to them as experts and did what had to be done. But, she also did not let the brothers push her around. She called Dean on his lying and stood up to Sam when he insisted they leave. In many ways, the things I love most about Lisa can also be said about Haley.
Still, for me it comes down to 2 people. Layla from Faith and Sarah from Provenance. Layla is one of the most sympathetic characters ever written. Who doesn't love the fatally ill woman who comes off as a saint? Add to that the impressive acting and it's a character you can't forget. I loved that she was the episode's moral compass and I still loved her. I too wish that the brothers would run into her sometime and she would tell them about the surgery that cured her. Unfortunately, that would also cheapen her character a bit so I will file that under be careful what you wish for.
In the end though, I chose Sarah Blake. I loved how she called the brothers on their lying and insisted they include her as part of the solution. She didn't just go with the flow but actually made the brothers fill her in and helped to defeat one scary painting girl. I liked how she could be classy and yet I feel she would also fit in any bar the brothers visit. Plus, she had a way of making others comfortable around her, even Dean who is not from her world. Mostly though, I loved how she was intelligent and brave even in unknown situations. She is a heroine for the times and I wish more females were portrayed like her on TV. She is the number one person I wish would show up again. Not just because Sam needs her and Dean approves of her, but because she was an interesting character in her own right, even if separate from the brothers.
In the end I love the people who were nominated in this list. There are only 4 that I wouldn't vote for. Two because they are more interesting in fanfiction than their limited time on screen and two because I deeply loathe them. Other than that, this list shows that when it comes to one-shot characters, season 1 is vastly superior to all other seasons. Something I love to remember whenever season 1 gets the shaft in other contests.
I think Sam talked about going back to a normal life in Shadows and Salvation also. However, I agree with you about Rebecca. She was strong and smart and yet still open to listen to what the brothers said. She was a strong woman with deep ties to her family and Sam, which always resonates deeply on this show. Especially since we rarely see PiP's who have any kind of connection with the Winchesters.
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely! In fact, Michael makes it into my list of best one-shot PiP's of all time. He did more as a kid than almost anyone else in the show. In fact, he was the first one to be willing to trade his life for his brother so in a way he fits into the overarching theme of Supernatural. I love Michael!
ReplyDeleteWhat I loved most about Emily is that when she found out that her aunt and uncle had betrayed her, she held them accountable but then didn't melt into a hysterical blob like I would have done. She realized the situation and was ready to help with anything she could. I loved how she lit the tree on fire herself at the end and how she was still ready to face whatever life threw at her at the end, and she had really gone through a lot beforehand.
ReplyDeleteFun fact - Even though Emily did not immediately fall for Dean, the actress who played her did date Jensen Ackles. Guess both J2 are good with dating co-workers. :-) And I'm excited about next week's poll too. Again, I think all the best one-shot monsters are from season 1.
Good point. They did save all the other people on this list except Pastor Jim and Caleb. Layla was rare in many ways but the fact that she was dying from a natural cause made it all the more heartbreaking. The Winchesters are prepared to defeat all things supernatural, but even they cannot win against something natural like a brain tumor. It showed their vulnerability too.
ReplyDeleteAfter some debate, I had to go with Layla. She taught Dean something about faith and courage... plain old human hope that had nothing to do with the supernatural. I'd like to know what happened to her.
ReplyDelete'You know, I'm not much of the prayin' type. But I'm gonna pray for you.'
ReplyDelete'Well, there's a miracle right there.'
Not so much tugging at the heart-strings as hauling on them with an eighteen wheeler truck........
I voted for Sarah! I realy liked her and I'd love to see her again! She was the perfect girl for Sammy (since Jess is gone!)
ReplyDeleteThat line gets me everytime...*sob*
ReplyDeleteI have to ask: which two do you deeply loathe and why?
ReplyDeleteI actually quite agree with this! I've been waiting for Sarah to come back. I'd love to see Sam with her. She was my favorite girl. <3
ReplyDeleteI hate Cassie and Missouri for completely opposite reasons. I hate Cassie because of the actress. She made a great fence post but not a great love interest or person facing the supernatural. My four year old niece has more realistic facial expressions. She also ruined another sci fi show for me, The 4400. I loved it right until she came on and then it went completely downhill. This character could have been really interesting but instead I find the whole thing cringe worthy.
ReplyDeleteIn Missouri's case, I love the actress. Loretta Divine can do amazing things with very little to work with. However, I hate the way Missouri's character was written. I hate how she got parental when Dean and Sam had no personal experience with her. She delved into their personal lives like an old friend when she was really a stranger. I don't care if she knew John or not, I found her creepy, insulting, and in need of some etiquette lessons about personal space. Plus, I never understood why she treated the brothers so vastly different. She went out of her way to insult Dean, which makes no since because she didn't know him. I found that very off-putting and I would have no matter which brother it was. It was so odd that I spent most of my time wishing the episode was over. Again, this episode could have been epic with the return to their home and instead it is one of the shows that I rarely re-watch because the character of Missouri annoys me so very much. If we were voting for which character we never want to see return, Missouri and Becky would tie for me. I hate them both.
Missouri; she's one of the few who can actually kick Dean's but ;)
ReplyDeleteI love that post, it articulately describes exactly why I dislike Missouri. Her attitude towards Dean in particular bugged the living hell out of me, and her general attitude towards the boys was overly familiar, as you said. She's actually one PiP I wouldn't have minded the boys not being able to save. Cassie didn't bother me quite as much. I think I've only ever seen that episode once, and I can't remember her very clearly. I do remember thinking she was an odd character to bring in just for one episode. I suppose they probably brought her in to try and show another side of Dean, but I'm really not sure why that was necessary when we'd literally just had 'Faith' (one of the best Dean eps ever, IMO).
