Question of the Day - Which long running TV shows do you feel have run their course and should now end?

6 Dec 2010

Today I was thinking about all the shows that I used to love and enjoy that I always felt ended before their time and how several,IMHO, inferior shows continued to be produced.

As a result this led me to today's Question of the Day.

Which long running TV shows do you feel have run their course and should now end?

You can vote for up to 3 shows in the poll below. For me shows like Rules of Engagement, Two and Half Men and The Office have more than run their course along with shows like House and Grey's. I'd rather shows went out on their own terms and that the writers can wrap things up in their own time rather than getting cancelled due to dwindling ratings.

This is for shows that have had at least 4 seasons and are still on air.

Vote and Sound off in the comments and let me know if I have missed any.

  1. Hmm, really interesting question today, I'm not sure I agree that four season is a long running show myself, but whichever way it is, I voted the CSIs and the animated comics, because I think there's a point in a animated comics life when it just becomes cliche, and I think that most procedurals drag out their storylines, Criminal Minds is approaching this phase as well I think.

  2. good question btw !!!

    i vote for HIMYM
I'm fan of the show ,but its seen like ...its just running the same story over and over ...(just my view)
i would love if the show do interesting story line's thou :)

For *Rules of Engagement* ..don't make me start it ...i loss what the story about thou :P

  3. Voted for Dexter, The Simpsons and Weeds.
I would have also voted House and Chuck.

    ReplyDelete
  4. 11 votes for Gossip Girl and 8 for the Simpsons? Either here are indeed n00bs or some people just vote and don't even READ the headline of the poll.

    ReplyDelete
  5. Desp Housewives, House and OTH.
Though saying this about House makes me sad this season isnt so much fun

    ReplyDelete
  6. lol cause it should have more votes or none?

    ReplyDelete
  7. DEXTER! what? The season is soooo good :P

    ReplyDelete
  8. Bones, Chuck and HIMYM were what i voted for but would also add Burn Notice into there.

Chuck and Burn Notice have run out of steam. There's nowhere else the main theme/plot of the show can possibly go without making it more contrived than it is.

HIMYM has just lost the plot. It's not what it used to be. Same goes for Bones.

  9. Haven't liked S3 and S4 but this is just the worst. The writing has getting so bad, I just can't stand it anymore.

    ReplyDelete
  10. I voted for 'The Simpsons' mainly because the shows I religiously watch I'm happy with, and Simpsons is far overrun. Everyone who I know that did watch it doesn't any more!

    ReplyDelete
  11. :D Well okay hehe. I love it. Didnt like S3 either. (if its the one where the house blows up and the dude dies... if not well i meant this one. ahhaah worst thing ever) Any way

    ReplyDelete
  12. OTH, it should've ended after S6. GG is just getting boring, it already was after S2...

    ReplyDelete
  13. I voted for Two & a Half Men. I used to actually laugh at this show in the early days, now it's just sad. All the bad sex jokes, innuendos and sophomoric attempts at humor. Charlie is a sad caricature of a man (or a pathetic reflection of his real self), the kid is an unsympathetic smartass, and Allen is just an idiot. I stopped watching it when it stopped being funny years ago, but unfortunately my husband is a creature of habit and has it on once in a while -- but even he never laughs anymore. CBS won't cancel it since for some odd reason it's still their No. 1 comedy, but it's a very sad shell of what it once was.

  14. def OTH...the show is getting worse and worse

  15. I wish I could've given all three of my votes to House. It used to be my favorite show and now I can barely sit through it. Bring back the show and the character that we all fell in love with and dump this stupid soap opera. Death to Huddy. Whoever is in charge should write a book about how to ruin a great tv show.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Two and a Half Men is the obvious choice here.

    ReplyDelete
  17. i voted the simpsons and house (oh please don't kill me house fans)

i used to love the simpsons but i think they've run out of ideas and its kinda become a little ridiculous now and lost what i loved about it. and house, i guess i just liked the team dynamics of cameron, chase and foreman more, although i haven't exactly been watching recent episodes so who knows, it might've improved... anyone want to convince me to go back? all my tv watching friends have long abandoned house so i wouldn't know.

and and, I LOVE HIMYM. i see some comments about the fact that it has somewhat lost track of the plot, but i guess for me the show is about the comedy element and the running gags, not so much finding the mother (which is still important). For me its a light-hearted show, a break from the intense action and crazy rooting-for-you-favourite-character shows that my tv schedule mostly comprises of and hence has good longevity (like bbt, scrubs...)

    ReplyDelete
  18. I think when original characters/actors start leaving the show by choice, thats a sign that its the end. So Greys, CSI: LV, Criminal Minds, OTH, Desperate Housewives (I believe, but mostly I just think it should end)....

CSI: Miami, Dexter, and NCIS. These 3 i dont watch and feel that they have been on for to long

  20. Stop Choosing supernatural please it's awesome

    ReplyDelete
  21. I was just going to say - no one who voted for SPN has so far had the guts to front up and comment......because they know they're WRONG ;P

    ReplyDelete
  22. what???? Supernatural??? Seriously ??? Everything think that they want, but I don't think it's the series who deserves that really!
Even you choose supernatural, whatever because fans Supernatural are there to do to win! Like the cover for example ^^
For me Supernatural is awesome! So go Supernatural!

    ReplyDelete
  23. Chuck is in its best season so far at the moment according to some fans so I think the people that are saying that is a bit harsh. They managed to keep the story fresh which I didnt expect them to be able to do with adding Morgan into missions and actually exploring the Chuck/Sarah relationship. Entourage too had a very strong season in my eyes.

TAHM, ROE, HIMYM and TBBT have all had recent slumps but thats the same as with every show and they have come back round quite strong recently. Same with The Office and 30 Rock.

Gossip Girl is running out of new people to sleep with each other, as can be seen by the new Dan/Blair plot and is heading towards being as dull as OTH. That ran its course probably the same time as when The OC got pulled!

    ReplyDelete
  24. When producers of Supernatural announced sixth season I was so excited, but now I see it should've ended with fifth.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Well, if you think Supernatural is going "running the course", I'm sorry but you're wrong. Angels, Lucifer, God... It's all about Dean and Sam's job. They deal with demons, evil creatures. So, all this crap that some people is talking about "involve God and the devil in Supernatural is running the purpose of the beginning of the show" is completely nonsense. One hour or another, God or the devil would appear in the show. Literally.
Anyways... I think Supernatural is getting awesome each day. THANK YOU ERIC KRIPKE.

    ReplyDelete
  26. #1 easily is Family Guy, that show started being horrible when it came back from its initial cancellation (and I loved the first 3 seasons). Then I voted for Entourage which hasn't been good in a few seasons now, and Desperate Housewives from everyone I hear its lost its edge/creativity.

I know its all personal opinion but I don't get how people voted for Dexter, Chuck, Burn Notice. HIMYM I can understand more, but its still funny.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I voted "All of the above". I'd really be fine with them canceling every one of these shows and replacing them with something new. I still watch Eureka and Burn Notice, but they just don't have the charm of the first couple seasons.

    ReplyDelete
  28. One Tree Hill should end now! And also Weeds has run its course.

    ReplyDelete
  29. You people SUCK, supernatural deserves to continue idiots and it will

    ReplyDelete
  30. Pff, those 248 people are just Chuck fans who are pissed we won. 9 u9

    ReplyDelete
  31. I voted for it.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I didn't see that option, but that's what I would have done too.

    ReplyDelete
  33. I think reality shows have run their course more than all of these shows combined. They should all be destroyed, er...cancelled.

    ReplyDelete
  34. Weeds really went downhill in seasons 4 and 5, but this past season was quite good. It was only so, however, because it began to address many of the fundamental problems of the characters' and the plot explored the beginnings of the story. I think the creator expressed that next season will be the last anyways, and this past season did seem to mark the beginning of the end in terms of the final act. Dexter this season has been pretty good, though I hope it'll go out on a high note next season. The Office, on the other hand, I still watch habitually, but it's become almost painfully unfunny. I feel it should have ended by now, but they'll probably keep milking the show long after Steve Carrell's departure.

    ReplyDelete
  35. In all srsness, though, I voted for Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill, and I think Family Guy... but I forget.. @A@

Gossip Girl because judging by the title, that show should have never even been born, seeing as you can go to your local high school and watch the show for free, with a more realistic cast.

One Tree Hill because most if not all of the original cast disappeared, I personally never really watched it in the first place, and even the FANS want it to end.

If I chose Family Guy, it's because the show lost .. I dunno, whatever made it hilarious before.. It just seems like an empty shell of what it used to be.

Though the Simpsons might also should go. I haven't seen too much of it, but hasn't it been going on since forever? If they can still pull off awesome, then okay w/e, but if they're like how Family Guy is ['cept they've been around longer], then I think they should drop it.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Well done for fronting up - I still think you're wrong ;P

    ReplyDelete
  37. Well, IMO if you think a show is bad, you shouldn't watch it. It's pretty simple, others might like the one you want to cancel. Does it hurt that those shows are still on air? No.

    ReplyDelete
  38. Dammit, I hit the like button and meant to hit reply. I was going to say, do you even watch it? I never see you posting about it.

    ReplyDelete
  39. I voted "other" and wrote in: Law and Order: SVU

Enough is enough. The show used to be good (for a procedural) but SVU only has two types of episodes anymore: predictable or ridiculous.

    ReplyDelete
  40. LOL I'll agree with that!

    ReplyDelete
  41. Exactly my thoughts. Thank you very much for saying this.

    ReplyDelete
  42. What was wrong with season 4? I mean if you didn't like 4 than I obviously wouldn't expect you to like season 5, which in my opinion is the best yet. I mean do you just not like how Dexter's character has changed, or is it other things? How would show even be interesting in any way after season 2 if they didn't make it about Dexter trying and struggling to change? I personally do think that the show should end soon with season six being its last, unless the writers think they have a really amazing plan for a 7th season, but I doubt it. No drama should go past season 6. Lost and the Sopranos were six, The Wire was five.

    ReplyDelete
  43. I don't like where the Dexter character has been heading for the last 3 years, I hate all the filler storyline about the supporting character which nobody cares about and finally IMO the show now it's nothing more than "been there, done that" with some bad characters and bad overall plot.

    ReplyDelete
  44. I Think she is wrong 2 , come on the show just won guide tv cover and the votes were over 5000000
That's only mean how much people are devoted 4 that show and wanting more of it
    not 2 cancel it

    ReplyDelete
  45. NCIS just keeps getting better and better.

    ReplyDelete
  46. Glad, I'm not the only one:)

    ReplyDelete
  47. Ditto. The Apocalypse and Lucifer storyline was supposed to be there from the very beginning. The show's main mytharc was always supposed to end with Sam being Lucifer's vessel, so yeah, it was not running the purpose, it was always gonna lead to this and everything that's been happening in seasons 1-3 was leading to what happened in seasons 4-5.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Two and a Half Men. That show is ridiculously tired. The Simpsons has definitely been on long enough, the gags just aren't what they used to be. They should have finished with The Simpsons Movie and ended gracefully instead of dragging out.

    ReplyDelete
  49. It's possible but we do need to give Chuck fans a hand for giving us such a tight race. I hope they give Chuck a TV cover in the coming months because they deserve it too. Both Supernatural and Chuck have an awesome fan base.

    ReplyDelete
  50. There is definitely filler (though what defines that can be debated) with all the Miami Metro stuff, especially this season, and there is some "been there, done that," but there is also a lot of new and different, which is indisputable since Dexter's character is constantly evolving. Obviously though if you don't like the show anymore you don't like the show anymore, and there isn't much of a reason for me to try and convince you otherwise.

    ReplyDelete
  51. One Tree Hill, definitely. Seasons 1-4 were awesome and that's where the show should have ended. End of Tree Hill High, end of story.
seasons 5-8 were/are disastrous. I used to love the show so much that it's really sad for me to see where it ended up... :(

    Grey's is my second choice.

    ReplyDelete
  52. Wholeheartedly agree. I can easily see NCIS go on for atleast 10 seasons, maybe more.

    ReplyDelete
  53. Oh, I know I'm wrong. I was just trying to be honest about my vote. The truth I've tried to like Supernatural. I really have. I just haven't felt much interest in it. I can't stand Jensen Whackles acting either. I hate the CW for not being HD. That is why I voted against it. Maybe I'll try starting from the beginning over the summer next year. I know the poll doesn't matter, because it won't cause any of those shows to go away, so I wasn't taking it seriously. I'd much rather get rid of all the cop shows, slutty wife/doctor shows, and especially all of the reality shows before Supernatural.

    ReplyDelete
  54. why would people vote for Supernatural? It's restarting a whole new plot plus there are dozens of more monsters they can still cover, plus it's doing fine. One Tree Hill is getting to the point where it's getting pretty bad, but they need Lucas and Peyton back to spice up the plot

    ReplyDelete
  55. I'll try to remember my likes as -1 from now on, don't worry. I watch it very occasionally. I don't post about it, because I don't watch it enough. I'm not gonna go posting about something I don't like enough or know that much about. That would just start arguments. I'm not here to argue...well most of the time.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Hey I agree on that - there's plenty of shows that need to be gotten rid of.
At least you've given SPN a fair chance - I think most people who run it down haven't.

    ReplyDelete
  57. so let me get this straight , u wanna get rid of all these shows & u wanna get rid of them
and u did not pick any of em but u picked the one u dont know enough about it
    that's odd dont u think
and why u cant stand Jensen ? i mean of course every body have different point of view
and i respect other people opinions but did u really had to call him Whackles
i guess that was not necessary

    ReplyDelete
  58. You people SUCK, supernatural deserves to continue idiots and it will

    ReplyDelete
  59. I can speak of shows I have watched.
I chose - Bones, CSI, NCIS
It doesn't really say that they are bad or anything. I just don't think they hold the same interest for me as it once did.

    ReplyDelete
  60. Some people feel a loyalty to the show and want to watch it till the end, no matter how bad it gets. I've been waiting for the rap up of OTH for a few seasons now continually thinking this season will be the last. Even Prison Break which was a great show had people at the end just wishing for a rap up, same with last season of Heroes which ended up with a fair few unhappy fans at no rap up

    ReplyDelete
  61. oh yeah, Heroes needed a better conclusion than season 4 finale (which was more like a new beginning), especially that season 4 was REALLY bad compared to the other ones. But I loved the show anyway and it still hurts to think it went away without a proper ending or storyline closing. Same goes for another show I loved, the brutally cancelled after 2 seasons Dark Angel.

    ReplyDelete
  62. One Tree Hill needs to die.
    So does CSI: Miami.

    ReplyDelete
  63. I didn't like season 3 a whole lot, but season 4 was excellent, and it seems season 5 is climaxing well...

    ReplyDelete
  64. Entourage WOULD have gotten my vote, if it wasn't in it's final season (upcoming). Desperate Housewives are jumping time, which to me, might as well be a Shark. I WISH 2 1/2 Men would just go away, but for some reason the more disgusting of a human being Charlie Sheen gets, the better the ratings. What the hell is wrong with the 13-15mil people that watch that drivel? it's not even a little funny.

    ReplyDelete
  65. haven't liked season 4?? that's one of the BEST season of any show, ever!! The Trinity Killer storyline was fantastic! Season 5, SHOULD have been flat following last season, but it's been great! good tense moments along with a fresh and more disturbing story. but, to each his/her own.

    ReplyDelete
  66. If Dark Angel had become the Smart Alec show it probably would have had a few more seasons. Max became unwatchable in season 2. It got to where I wanted to mute the TV when she showed up, whining like always.

    ReplyDelete
  67. I love Chuck and for the most part, their fans were just as impassioned as we were. I would love it if Chuck got some recognition also... The same thing with Castle (my #3 show)... But, IMO, Supernatural will always be #1. This season has been so surprising and totally different than I expected. But I still love it, even without the ever popular brotherly bond. Since the relationship between the brothers has always been the highlight, the fact that I still love the show even with the missing bond, that really says something important about the writing. I may not love it in the same way as I did in previous seasons, but I am more anxious to see every episode than I ever have been... It is like each week is a new hellatus. I can't wait for the next episode!

    ReplyDelete
  68. I only started watching NCIS recently, so it is still pretty "fresh" for me... I just wish I could see some more with Tim and Ducky... They just have too many interesting characters on that show. I believe I have seen enough about Tony, Gibbs, and Ziva for a while. Time to focus some time on the other characters...

    ReplyDelete
  69. Most if not all of the original cast disappeared? Two cast members left...Chad and Hilarie. By choice, to persue other career options. Hilarie with her production company and Chad...well his career options were apparently not as vast as he had preceived them to be.

The show still has Sophia Bush, James Lafferty, Bethany Joy, Lee Norris, Antwon Tanner...plus great additions like Rob Buckley, Austin Nichols and Shantel VanSanten.

I do acknowledge that the show has changed, obviously. It is no longer considered a teen drama because frankly it's not. When they decided to age the show by four years (to get past the stage that every other teen drama failed to get past...the college years) they were able to open up the show to different situations, and a different audience. The show obviously would not have lasted for 8 seasons if they were still in high school. The fact that the characters are grown-up and have lives outside of who slept with who, and what the next fashion trend is going to be, is great. I think that season 8 is one of teh strongest seasons it's had,

Just saying, that first of all if you don't watch the show, then you really need to get your facts straight before posting about it. Like I said, we only lost two cast member *via choice* and not ALL of the fans want it to end, in fact most of the true die hard fans don't want it to end yet because we know that there is still plenty of storyline to go.

    ReplyDelete
  70. What? What? Supernatural was also voted one that should be axed. NO!!!!!! Not yet. Give it another season!

    ReplyDelete
  71. Maybe the people who voted Supernatural are disgruntled long time SpoilerTV fans who are tired of us overrunning their site. :-) We are passionate about our show and tend to tell everyone. Not that I think we should change because this fandom is awesome!

    ReplyDelete
  72. There's always room for more Abby! She's my favorite character.

    ReplyDelete
  73. I'm not disgruntled and I am a huge fan of Supernatural and I do want it to end because it needs to end. I just can't see it being good after Sam gets his soul back, if he does. Like I said many times on SpoilerTV, Sam could never be the same, he's been locked up in a Cage for over a year with Lucifer and Michael! Come on, people! Think it through! If you believe people have souls, how can you not believe that Sam would be okay and not go insane or be a human veggie??? Don't get me wrong, I really do enjoy the show but if they are planning on another season with Sam having his soul, then they messed up horribly! I know some won't agree with me, and that's okay. But I just can't see how Sam could get past what happened. NO ONE is that strong... I think they should continue another season with Sam not having his soul but being able to live a good life without it somehow...But EVERY good must end at some point.

    ReplyDelete
  74. The answer is quite obviously "Two And A Half Men." That show should actually be nuked.

    Now where's my prize?

    ReplyDelete
  75. That's only if his soul is really in hell (possible) and if it's being tortured by Lucifer and Michael (doubtful). What I can't believe is that Michael and Lucifer, who have been enemies for an eternity, would care at all about Sam's soul. They have far bigger issues to fight out. So what if Sam ruined their plans? They have been ruining each other's plans for millenia. Sam is the ant on the road with 2 opposing tanks. If he stays out of there way, he's too insignificant to worry about. I have no doubt that Sam gets his soul back, that there are many twists left in this season, and that Supernatural will have a seventh season. I'll trust the writers to tie up the lose ends and will be watching the season 7 premiere.

    ReplyDelete
  76. I wonder why so many ppl chose SPN? It's a great show and Season 6 has proven to be another hit so far ... I would love to see SPN go the extra mile and celebrate it's 10th anniversary! I voted for those Desperate Housewives ... just really can't stand them much though ... and yes, Burn Notice ... just dont ask me why ...

    ReplyDelete
  77. Soooooo true about GG. Cant even believe they are heading into DAIR romance territory. What a joke. Cancel this crap already before its too late.

    ReplyDelete
  78. Gossip Girl NEEDS TO END NOW. This show is so desperate, to the point of making Blair sleep with Dan. Sickening stuff. Cancel it please.

    ReplyDelete
  79. Definitely NOT One Tree Hill! I don't care what anybody else thinks, the show still has its fire and could easily last into a ninth season

    ReplyDelete
  80. I wasn't really taking it that seriously. So sorry. I take back everything I ever said. From now on, I will try to lose my sense of humor so I don't say anything wrong and hurt someone's feelings.

    ReplyDelete
  81. Well, you can see those who lost the TV Guide cover have been on. Has to be people who haven't watched Supernatural. The new story line is catching on and the show is picking up momentum. Don't vote on something you haven't watched, folks. lol

    ReplyDelete
  82. Totally disagree! NCIS just keeps getting better and better with every single episode! CSI: Miami was the best choice the original CSI: series creators took when they created it. I don't say that I don't like CSI: LV, but with William Petersen leaving it's just not the same anymore... So I voted for CSI: Las Vegas, Desperate Housewives and Two and a Half Men.

    ReplyDelete
  83. If the producers gave a little more to fans what they wanted, Grey's Anatomy would not have gotten so many votes. Currently all the couples are screwed up or don't get enough screen time, no wonder fans are getting tired of the show.

    ReplyDelete
  84. If the producers gave a little more to fans what they wanted, Grey's Anatomy would not have gotten so many votes. Currently all the couples are screwed up or don't get enough screen time, no wonder fans are getting tired of the show.

    ReplyDelete
  85. Gossip girl should just pack up their bags. I was just thinking about this and saw your question in the next post. Ha ha
They're repeating the same patterns again and again. I get it, scandalous lives, untrustworthy newbies, cheating, lying, break-ups, make-ups. You should just give a sort of happy ending and get it over with.
Desperate Housewives has just gotten desperate for attention now.
And well, How I met you Mother. It took my mum an hour to tell me the whole story. How the hell has his kids not lost their patience yet? :P

    ReplyDelete
  86. I voted for Gossip Girl (The storylines are getting too crazy , and everybody has done it with each other already)

Also voted for House, same old story everytime....
    and for Desperate Houswives.. bleehhh

Also i tink csi las vegas should round up by now... great show but to many seasons now.

    ReplyDelete
  87. I'm guessing more because the Simpsons is on what, season 54 already?

    ReplyDelete
  88. didn't Joshua Jackson once say something in a Fringe interview about the end of Dawson's Creek that at one point in TV soap opera's "everybody's slept together" and where do we go from there?

    ReplyDelete
  89. I hated to do it but one of the shows I voted for was CSI: Las Vegas. After 11 seasons how many more twists can there be? And for me it really lost the core of the show when Grissom left. Desperate Housewives I watch out of loyalty more than being into the show that much anymore. And while I only watch Two and a Half men on occasion, I voted it third. Are there any women left for Charlie to sleep with? And Charlie Sheen just can't stay out of trouble.

    ReplyDelete
  90. lol yeah I know, thats why I ask. I mean if you think it should have none votes then u r crazy hhehe :P

    ReplyDelete
  91. Dan (save for the odd re appearance), Deb, Karen, Keith, Whitey, Lucas, Peyton. Thats 7.
The dynamic of the show has changed so much that its lost its charm

    ReplyDelete
  92. Fuck you Spoiler girl, all the good shows u think should end, as I repeat, fuck you!

    ReplyDelete
  93. Had to Vote for House. house has become like the last 2 seasons of 24, they took and a good show and ran it into the ground. Use to be a big choice watch chuck or watch House now its no competition.

    ReplyDelete
  94. wtffff
who voted for gossipgirl to end?
this is finally a good season thats exciting!
    like seriously,
gossip girl is more intersting than all of those shows combined. period.

    ReplyDelete
  95. i dont think gossipgirl started getting boring after season 2. have you SEEN the end of season 3?!!!!
    like seriously, get a grip

    ReplyDelete
  96. Good question!

Well, I love Bones a lot! But I think that the writers are becoming a little without ideas. Some things are too cliche and others are ruining the show. It's an amazing show and I would become VERY sad if it was canceled. So I think it's time to start to think in an ending! I'll feel sad, but happy at the same time!

  97. Good? don't get me started this season has been a disaster seasons 1-4 are the best and will always be the best season 5 has been terrible and i can't stand julia stiles i think that's whats ruined this season for me and Lucitair while i've hated this season i do not believe Dexter has not run it's course i think season 6 will be alot better than season 5 just as long as it doesn't have julia stiles in it i'll be happy with the show i think it has alot of potential still

NCIS was my favourite show until it became so popular, it has changed alot

  100. Wow I missed this QotD!!! I voted Supernatural, Entourage and Weeds. I watch all 3 regularly, but all three are going in circles now.

  101. NCIS should stop this season even if i know it will be renew for sure cause of its ratings. The show is sooo boring now and nothing new on it.
I rather watch House who can still surprised me even after 7 years :)
