Glee-2.09-Special Education (Recap)

Lets talk. There is a lot to say and for once it's not all good.
Tonight's episode Special Education was this years Sectional's episode, and like last year drama unfolds. And is it me or is the drama always about sex? Ryan Murphy are you trying to use metaphor's? There has been a lot of judgement on this season saying that it's not as good as last year-and in some ways i agree and in other i disagree. Was last years Sectional's episode better then this years? YES like 100% better. Now to be fair, depending on who you ship (Finnchel, Quick, Fabrevans) depends on how you see the episode. I am a Finnchel lover always, they are the core couple of the show. That being said i did not hate Quinn and Sam singing (I've) Had the Time of My Life-although i really do not like the song and his voice did not suit it-they were unbelievably cute. But was it me or was anyone else completely heartbroken to see Sam and Quinn come out like Rachel and Finn? That move is specifically made for them-i felt dupted.

Now the real heartbreaking in this episode goes to...the writers! Here's the issue- Santana telling Rachel about her and Finn-really that was very Santana like. My problem lies in the way they writers choose to portray Rachel. They say the show is about bringing misfits together, to a place where they all feel they belong. Well when are you going to make Rachel feel like she belongs? Her little attitude about doing solo's is getting old, her acting like a child every time Mr. Schue take's something away from her-also getting old. She is clearly the most mature one in the group and yet they have her acting like a child-it's really sad and upsetting. What's not upsetting Kurt and Rachel having a friendship-it is beyond cute and something they both needed to embrace a long time ago. What's even better is them singing together. We saw it in episode 4 with Happy Day's which is by far the most amazing performance-and now with Don't Cry for Me Argentina-i admit the song is kind of dreadful-but it fits both of them perfectly. And anytime Lea Michele sings and i get chills you know she's doing something right.
Now the biggest issue of this episode is that last scene with Finn and Rachel. Firstly he is in the wrong-it absolutely matters that he slept with Santana and lied about it-and did he NOT learn anything from last years Sectionals. Admittly Rachel hooking up with Puck-dick move and completely beneath her, and she is wrong and Finn should be mad. However comparing it to last years Puck/Quinn/Finn mess was wrong-cause it's still all on him. This upset me the most in the whole episode-Finn is constantly making mistakes and never paying for them-but when Rachel makes a mistake she gets outcasted by everyone in Glee including Mr. Schue. I really do love this show with everything i am-but sometimes the writes need to remember who is in the wrong-and its Finn.
The last performance of Dog Day's Are Over was great-i love the song and i love what they did with it. They kept each character as they are no fancy foot work, no costume-just them having a good time on stage.

Highlight Scene: Rachel yelling at Finn "You said you'd never break up with me!" my heart break's always for Rachel and Lea Michele nails it everytime.
Highlight Character: Puck-for being awesome with everyone! Especially saying No to Rachel

Overall 2.5/5 it's so hard to love everything about this episode when there is so much wrong with it.

  1. Completely agreed... I hate what they are doing to Finnchel... :-(

  2. Dang it! I haven't seen it yet because we don't have FOX here in Am. Samoa so I wait until my midnight when the ep is on iTunes. But I had heard Finchel would have problems...never thought Finn to be the one breaking them up because as you say, he's wrong..well more wrong than Rachel.
I agree though. When will Rachel finally fit in the glee club? During the Rocky Horror ep, Mercedes wanted to put her in a jar in her basement. In the Brit ep, Santana criticized her clothes. You'd think after all they'd been through as a club last year, they'd have each others' back already.
I like the friendship between Kurt and Rachel. I've been wanting that to happen for sometime.
Rachel hon, quit the club. Out of all of them, you will be a broadway star. You don't need them. Until Finn apologizes, he's a Lima loser. Move on. Too bad Dalton is an all boys school.

Ok venting done. *sighs* I feel so much better. :) Bring on the next episode!

  3. Oh I really don't agree at all with the Finn and Rachel thing. From my point of view, Rachel is wrong.

Finn made a mistake, he knew that, and he regretted ever sleeping with Santana. The fact that he cut himself off from doing it again with her shows a lot of restraint, and he did it before getting back with Rachel. Mind you, she was dating someone else at the time, and by all outward appearances it looked like they were getting serious.

Finn lying about it was a bad move, I won't pretend it wasn't, but there are unwritten rules to these things. Whoever you've been intimate with in the past is in no way the business of who you're currently with. This is a very important rule in any relationship, it helps make things work.

I could understand her being angry about the lie, but it seemed like she was more upset about it being Santana. Then she immediately turns around and hooks up with Puck? There is no way to justify that. Finn slept with someone when they weren't together, Rachel slept with the guy who his previous girlfriend cheated with and became pregnant from. What's worse, she did it out of revenge for something she had no right to get revenge for.

I'm sorry, I can agree with the rest of the review, but that part is completely nonsensical. Rachel's crimes were FAR worse than his.

I totally agree with that. I do'nt like Finn, I have never liked him and never will. It feels like during every episode he screws up, again and again, and then he apologizes by singing or making a speech (not always though), and then everything okay and he's a saint. He's an immature idiot who needs to grow up and doesn't level up to Rachel at all.

  5. I agree with the recap - it feels like hardly any of the characters have actually grown...mainly Rachel.

  6. Really? Quinn is actually dating a nice guy and not being a bitch to him. Puck decided to listen to his head and not what's in his pants. Brittany is putting effort into a relationship. Rachel isn't the only one who has grown.

  7. I stated some haven't actually grown - basically....I feel like Finn, Rachel as well as others - just seem to be stuck in limbo...of a sorts.....Britt, Quinn and Puck are like the only ones who seem to grow.....there characters are actually forming into something else...besides what we saw in S1.....the other just stay the same - yeah, have had their moments, but it doesn't seem to be any solid progression with the others....

  8. Well, I actually was almost spoiler free until yesterday. Then, I knew something would happen. But, I was very disappointed in the episode. I've disliked elements of some but have never been really disappointed, as I was in this one. This was sectionals! So...there should be this excitement. I felt like those kids boarding the bus.

But, aside from that, my big beef was actually not in Rachel's reaction to Santana...but, #1--in Mr. Shue's reaction to Rachel's reaction. Whether she appears more mature or not is not the point. She's supposed to be 16 (I think). She's a kid. He's an adult. He had absolutely no right to yell at her in front of the others the way he did in a club that is voluntary, not part of the school curriculum. Especially since he was there to witness the Finn-Santana business. I'm sorry but I liked him at one point. Now, I think he's a self-serving jerk. He based his decisions in tonight's episode not on what was good for the choir but what would impress Emma the most.

He stood there and watched as Santana declared that absolutely no one likes Rachel. All of them did. Obviously, from her reaction to Finn's sexual encounter being with SANTANA, the girl's got some insecurities (as most teens do). But, hey, no support (even away from the choir)...just suck it up and sing with the group and be happy about it. While I'm at it, Emma did a lousy job of counselling, too. It's a wonder if any of these kids make it out of there alive. Certainly, if they do, they will need massive therapy.

Finn? My biggest beef with him is an odd one. Last shot of the show? He has his arm around Puck's shoulder. HELLO???? whether Puck stopped or not--he was on that bed with the intention of screwing another of Finn's girlfriends. He didn't go through with it and Finn is perfectly fine with him. But, Rachel, he all of a sudden can't forgive.

Next week better be better. I'm really POed.

  9. I agree with you to the extent that Finn never pays for his actions, like leaving Kurt hanging last episode. To be truthful, i still do not believe Finn has Kurts back because Finn is only on the football team for popularity and we all know it is not cool to stick up for the gay guy in highschool. I thought Quinn and Sams performance was weak (compare to Rachael and Finn) and it was because of the song choice, i hate that song too and it is cheesy as hell (even for this show). Mr. Shue needs to be more modern with his song choices or let the kids choose their own songs, when Quinn and Sam sang "Lucky" they killed it and they choose that song. Mr. Shue is the worst teacher ever, sure he is good looking, great body but he sucks as a teacher in general especially Glee. Just cause you can sing does not mean you should head up Glee. The Warblers are also starting to get on my nerves, their is no school like this, sure private schools have no bullying policy but that does not mean their is no bullying, my school had a no cheating policy, i still cheated. Kurt seems to be in some weird world where everyone hair is perfect, no one is competitve for the lead vocals, everyone's voice is soft and quiet, and it seems if you say one insulting comment to these guys then they would be at a lost for words. I would not let my son step into this school cause it would brainwash him into believing the world is fair, with no conflict (which is how i see the school) but that is far from reality. These Warblers will be shocked the moment someone yells a profanity in their direction. However, they have some really awsome musical numbers and that is when we get to see some of Blaine's personality. That actor looks like he is having a blast doing them. Thank god Mr. Shue gave Santana a solo (though i did not like the song) you know who else needs a solo, Tina. At the end in the dog days song she blew me away at how powerful that voice can be, seriously i knew Mercedes had vocals but wow go Tina, she has some range. This show is also prejudice (big time!!) notice how the whalling moments went to the black women in the Hipsters, cause you know black women like Tina Turner, Beyonce, Whitney (fucking) Houston can't sing, they have no control in their voices and can only whal cause that how black women sing, apparently. Seriously, Ryan Murphy, Hollywood, writers of Glee, are you guys fucking kidding. Mercedes can sing without knocking out of the park. You are confusing this generation by telling them Maddonna (who does not have an mediocre voice), Brittney Spears (a weird voice), and other white girls can even hold a dime to Whitney Houston. I starting to question if these writers know much about music in general or do the specialize in pop music, cause they pay big time for them. I am sorry i have so much, too much to say, this episode was funny, it was not that bad, and no it was not as good as last years and the fact that they tied in the end made me happy cause I was actually cheer for the Warblers (not cause of Kurt but cause they are pretty good and fun to watch) and New Directions are having some serious problems. Put Rachael in her place, let Tina get some solos, have Mercedes sing a song where she doesn't whal or diva it up (like Beyonce's Irreplaceble, Baby Boy, Sweet Dreams) or something, and as for Finn, I always hated him, let him get run over by a bus, that would be funny, and have Emma join Glee as co-captine since Will only does things to please her these days (buying a new car, performing Toxic with Glee, doing the entire Rocky Horror show, selfishly taking Sam's role in Rocky Horrer so he can have Emma give him a lap dance or whatever that was, and not letting Rachael perform and solo at sectionals). And allowing Glee to perform some songs that actually match their talents and rang, I love Quinn and Sam and they can do a better duet than that. I also hated that they stole Finn and Rachael's entrance, weak.

  10. Completely agree, Mr. Shue sucks and he had no right to yell at that student for disagree with him. Especially if it is an afterschool activity and he is doing it to impress Emma. Well said. I hate Finn too.

  11. Yes, everybody should join the I hate Finn bandwagon cause he has not change and is an idoit. I doubt he wil give up his popularity to defend Kurt from getting bullied.

  12. I usually don't care about this show enough to engage in a discussion but something that you wrote really made me think. I was reading your recaps before and couldn't tell if you were a guy or a girl. Now I have a pretty good guess that you're a girl:) The way you reacted to the final Finn/Rachel scene gave it away. I'm a guy and I disagree with you a 100%. Yes, what he did was wrong. He should have told her at some point what happened between him and Santana and he admitted that. However it's not like Santana and Rachel are friends or have ever been friends for that matter. How on earth can you compare him sleeping with someone when he was single and not disclosing that information to his girlfriend to her cheating on him with his former best friend out of spite? Because that's what it was. She didn't do it cuz she was lonely and felt hurt. She clearly stated that she did it to make him feel bad, as in, to hurt him! How can you side with her on this one? How can your heart go out to her when she's done the worst possible thing a girlfriend can do for the worst possible reason? And her saying that it cancels the whole Santana thing out just proves that she, in fact, is NOT the smartest, most mature person of the group. She's a spoiled kid who bitches and moans every time she doesn't get what she wants. And you're right about that part - the writers need to do/try something new cuz what they're doing is getting old very fast.

Actually I agree with everything else you wrote a 100%. Finn is in the habit of making mistakes, I'm just saying in this episode he was the one who was wronged...a lot! Kurt is getting too much attention, but I personally think that of all the glee kids he's the most talented actor. Your assessment is right, an okay episode but not nearly as good as last year's sectionals-centric episode.

  13. Anyone else thought the 3rd age group should have won over The Wraglers? o.O

    ReplyDelete
  14. wow. i like how that was completely about Finn and Rachel.

  15. I agree with almost everything in this recap. Im not a hard-core Finnchel fan, but I agree that this break-up was sloppy in the writing dept. I LOVE Sam and Quinn- I think it's great that she is finally in a healthy relationship, and that she isn't being a biotch. I also think Puck was great when he left Rachel. But I don't see the appeal in the whole Artie/Brittany relationship- besides the hilarious Brittany lines of course. Their relationship doesn't make any sense to me...but maybe that's why it works...Lastly, WEMMA?! what a shame. Seriously, something better happen or I think the show will lose a lot of fans- Wemma is such a wanted couple in this show, and then they go and ruin it?!
