Rachel Nichols is in negotiations to join the cast of CBS' Criminal Minds as a series regular, the show's first new regular addition since Joe Mantegna took over for Mandy Patinkin in 2007. Nicholson was originally tapped for a 3-episode arc, which will begin airing next week. CBS had said it would add a new female regular cast member this season following the departure of original co-star A.J. Cook. The character Alias alumna Nichols will play, FBI cadet Ashley Seager, had been originally listed as a new regular but was eventually scaled back to 3 episodes. Seager will first join the Behavior Analysis Unit when she is invited by Agent Hotch (Thomas Gibson) to consult on a case after learning her family history will bring a unique insight into the mind of a serial killer.

  1. Instead of adding another female, let's just make JJ come back!!!

  2. I am all for this!! HELL YEA! She was AWESOME on The Inside, a show that came out the same year as Criminal Minds but was cancelled mid-season. On The Inside, she played a young FBI agent that was abducted as a child and therefore had a unique perspective on kidnaps, killers etc. Sounds like they may do a similar back story on her character on CM. They can maybe make her chracter more interesting than Prentiss or JJ since both were yawnfests!

  3. I am fairly certain Nichols will be a profiler not a communication liaison , so one has nothing to do with the other.

  4. Look I've barely watched since JJ left but I was a huge Alias fan and I did like Rachel on that show it's just JJ was my favorite Character and lets face it even if she isn't going to be a comm. Liaison she's still AJ Cooks replacement. I may catch up over the holiday break just so I can see if I like the show with her on it or not. Oh and by the way Prentiss and JJ are both anything but a yawnfest. The only boring one for me is Rossi but I thinks it's cause he hasn't had much of a storyline last time I looked, someone please let me know if thats changed.

  5. I often like background characterson shows more than the main star. Spike on BTVS Chloe on Smallville etc... butthey are just background characters. Criminal minds spends more time every episode on the criminals the BAU is trying to catch because that's the premise of the show. It's about the unit. To me Any of them can be replaced. Each part is different, but it's still the same show. If people want to watch for chracters that's great! But that does not mean someone's favorite is the main character on the series. JJ was unneeded on Criminal minds and that's why they decided to let that character go. Theteam can still track and capture killers without a liaison. Prentiss would be easily replaced by any other female agent just as she easily replaced Elle Greenway before her. Mandy Patinkin is an actor with possibly the most gravitas out there and many said when he was fired the show was over. I don't know if ratings are up or down since Mandy left, but the show has carried on and remained strong if not stronger. FYI... Gideon was my favorite character on Criminal Minds.

  6. By the way I don't mean to sound like i'm attacking, I just don't see how JJ or Prentiss contribute the the policing aspect of the show very much. Most the cases seem to be solved by Garcia, Reid, Rossi and Morgan. But I enjoy the darkness of the psychological aspect of the twisted criminals. So to me it does not matter who goes after them. I am likely in the minority.

  7. Even if she is a profiler, the actress will be a replacement to AJ Cook. I don't have anything against Rachel or her character, I just prefer having AJ back on the show. Better if we can have both but if I have to choose, my choice will be always AJ.

  8. I love how they make it sound like A.J. Cook left voluntarily.

  9. That probably won't happen because AJ didn't leave voluntarily. She was fired for "creative" or "financial reasons" or whatever excuse they came up with. I love how CBS can't seem to own up to the fact they didn't give her a choice in the matter.

  10. Also read how Prentiss will be taking the "deal" CBS offered her after all. The one wehre she will be on less episodes and have less face time in the episodes she is on, but she can audition for new show pilots. Looks like she will not be around long either from the sounds of it.

  11. I wish they would bring back AJ!! If Nicholson does join the cast, which I have no problem with in itself, there will have been no valid reason for AJ to have left!!

  12. Well if Prentiss goes too then they have 2 out and one in.. .saving them 50% of the cost of 2 contracts. Maybe more since both JJ and Prentiss likely had raises in their tenure on Criminal Minds. So by losing the two and bringing in Nichols they do have reason. Fresh stories for her characters background and less cost. If she works out they really did not lose anything, but they gained new blood in the series and a new starting point for possible plots. Even if she does not work out they can just replace her with another female character (at less cost) as Prentiss already successfully replace Elle. It's a win-win situation.

  13. I agree but the thing is that this actress will probably get lesser money than A.J Cook so that would be a consideration but is that why they let her go in the first place? money?

  14. That's what they said. Well at first it was "financial reasons" then they changed it to "creative reasons" so who knows. It might have been a bit of both. I don't know. My whole issue is that they need to refresh the show so they immediately replace the only two female FBI agents on the show (Garcia is more of a technical analyst), while the 4 men are completely safe. Not that I don't love the men on the show but it does send the message that CBS thinks women are expendable.
