Supernatural - Episode 6.07 - Family Matters - Recap / Review
7 Nov 2010
DH Reviews SupernaturalIn an episode of surprises, we start before the episode even begins. Why hello Misha. Yes, I will stay tuned for Supernatural. I feel bad for people who watch Smallville and then don't stay for Supernatural. Before we begin, I am completely non-objective because I love this episode. It's my favorite this year. I can't believe there are people who didn't like it.
Previously - things sucked, both literally and metaphorically
We open from Sam-Thing's point-of-view and everything is blurry and confusing. Cas is poking him and asking weird questions. Dean is in intense interrogation mode. Sam-Thing is not feverish or speaking in tongues, but wait a minute, he's had no sleep for over a year. What! If I don't get 6 hours a night, people avoid me. Maybe Sam-Thing is just how sleep-deprived Sam acts. And here I was impressed by his all-nighter last week. Anyway, Dean is as shocked as I am and wavers between super-cool monster hunter and flabbergasted, concerned brother. Cas has a feeling and things get really awkward as he goes beltless. Cas proceeds to torture Sam-thing for the answers just like he did the kid in episode 3. I don't like it here either but the special effects are cool though so I concentrate on them. "It's his soul. It's gone." If I hadn't seen the preview last week, I would be stunned. By the way, I'm glad they told us this last week because there are too many shocks in this one already.
Sam-Thing and Dean look confused, while Cas speculates Michael and Lucifer are playing catch with Sam's soul. You got to do something in the cage. Cas conveniently sidesteps the question we all want to know, "Is it Sam?" Great, now I'm stuck with doubts and the Sam-Thing moniker. Dean wants Cas to get Sam's soul back but Cas points out a few small problems. I start my "Things I Am Confused About" list. Today's episode is going to be longer than usual. Apparently it took several angels to rescue Dean. Why then were the demons confused as to why Dean came back? Shouldn't an angel assault on hell warrant a little time on the demon grapevine? Also, the cage is being heavily guarded. By whom? I can't believe they let demons guard Satan, so that leaves angels. Releasing Michael and Lucifer seems like number 1 on Raphael's to do list so it can't be his angels guarding it. By default, shouldn't the angels guarding the cage be on Team Cas? I can see if Cas were saying they couldn't go in because of the danger of inadvertently letting Lucifer out too, but not because of a guard problem. While I am lost in mysteries, Sam-Thing shrugs and starts untying his restraints.
Dean won't untie Sam-Thing, so Sam-Thing pleads in a little kid voice, "Dean, I'm not some psycho. I didn't want you to get hurt. I was just trying to stop the vamps." Dean's not buying it. "Sam, how am I even supposed to let you out of this room?" Great discussion follows complete with an apology and more confusion. The point is moot though as Sam-Thing unties the knots and calmly says that Dean can't hold him. Dean has no choice but will be watching him. Sam-Thing agrees. I am really concerned because Cas doesn't look like this is a good idea, although he uses his healing powers to make Sam-Thing pretty again. I think everyone forgot the key question. Shouldn't somebody ask Cas if this has happened before and what the person was like? It would be nice to know what to expect.
(Um, Wilson, I'm borrowing your table. I might need somewhere to duck.) I don't trust this version of Sam. He had all the right words and all the right expressions to conjure up Sammy. His tone was little brother wheedling for big brother to understand and make things right. It was everything I hoped, but Supernatural has made me suspicious. This Sam-Thing knows Sammy and he knows Dean and I think he's manipulating the situation. It may be just the soullessness making me uneasy but Sam-Thing has lied and capitalized on Dean's feelings before. The way Cas looked at Dean reinforced my doubt. This was too calculating for me. (Ducks under table.)
All leads point to Grandpa Creepy, of course, and Dean and Sam-Thing enter Creepy Compound. Not like the barbed wire fencing and guards say something's up. His neighbors must think he's creating a militia. In the compound, busy worker bees are sharpening knives and pouring blood. Where did Gramps get so many followers? I spy "cult". Christian greets Sam-Thing like a frat brother and is cold to Dean. Good thing Gwen annoys me as much as you Christian, so you're not the only one I want to die. Dean gives it right back. "Hello Newman. Where's the man?" I don't watch Seinfeld but even I think it's a good comparison. Dean and Sam-Thing barge in on a nostalgic Grandpa Creepy. He wants to know what's wrong. I want to know where Christian is. Obviously something's up and he doesn't seem the type to stay in the background unless Grandpa Creepy orders it. He's second in command. Cas pops in for some male posturing and a little more torture. (Enough already.) Gramps starts screaming and Christian starts running. Apparently, he needed his coffee more than information. Christian bursts in gun first only to be sent back to the bleachers by Gramps. In the whole Creepy Compound, Christian is the only one who comes running? Either the worker bees find Grandpa creepy too or they are used to hearing people scream in pain.
Cas confirms that Grandpa Creepy does have a soul, which makes him even creepier. Since he's not dumb, he gets it. Sam-Thing: "Whoever dragged me out left a piece behind. Did you know?" Apparently Gramps has nothing to hide - right- and didn't know -maybe. He admits Sam-Thing sometimes scares him. Me too, Gramps. Cas checks out of the conversation to listen to war updates, or maybe the football game. He has to fly but Dean demands, "You better tear the attic up. Find something to help Sam." Shut up, Dean! Cas deadpans, "Of course. Your problems always come first." You go Cas. Dean is in as much need of a verbal smackdown here as you were last episode. Cas jets and for the first time I laugh with Grandpa Creepy: "I would have asked him to stick around for a beer."
Creepy Compound is abuzz with activity and Sam-Thing susses out that they found AlphaVamp. He's hurt Grandpa didn't invite him but Dean knows it's because Grandpa doesn't trust him. Dean backs Grandpa into a corner by saying, "Big Daddy Bloodsucker, I ain't gonna miss that. But this is your deal. Ok, I get it. I'll follow your lead. I trust YOU." What! Noooooo! Please Dean, tell me you aren't falling for this family thing. Dean and Sam-Thing walk outside. Dean: "I don't trust him. Dude's hiding something." Thank goodness. You had me worried there. Sam-Thing wonders about Dean not trusting family. Dean: "I can feel it and if you weren't RoboSam you'd feel it too." Thanks Dean; that fits better than Sam-Thing. Since Grandpa Creepy is still the only lead they have, they go back in. RoboSam sits with Christian while Dean breaks into Gramps' office. But Christian won't be fooled twice and follows Dean. Dean says he needs to make a private phone call but Christian doesn't buy it. In all fairness Dean starts the fight by saying he was going to call Christian's wife, "let her know I'm not going to make it over tonight." Apparently, Christian was being nice before and I agree with Dean that he needs to work on his people skills. Christian goes all green-eyed saying that he is a big, bad hunter and doesn't need Dean. Jealous much! "You walk around like you're playing pro tennis. Only action you've seen lately is between your slut girlfriend's legs." Excuse me! You did not just go there Christian. Lisa is the only female I like on this show. Ok, I hate you more than Gwen. You die first, and in a horrible fashion. Dean slams Christian into a wall and I can't wait for Christian to get what's coming to him. Christian has obviously not seen Dean angry and threatens him. "You sure you want to come with us tomorrow. Accidents happen." What is your deal? Are you that worried Dean will show you up? Dean shows more self-control than I would. He adjusts Christian's collar, saying, "Don't worry man. I got your back." before walking out.
At the hunt, Grandpa Creepy assigns Dean and Gwen to background patrol. Gwen: "I'm in the rear with the reject." Good thing I hate Christian more now or you'd be first on my hit list. Dean has no choice but to let RoboSam go. Gwen apologizes and says she always gets the worst jobs because of Mary. She is a young, sassy female, but all resemblance ends there. Gwen is more sympathetic this episode but she's still a CSK. However, she does know her stuff as she beheads a runaway vamp. Dean hears gunshot and runs to the house, only to see Grandpa Creepy and RoboSam loading AlphaVamp into the van. Dean gets back to Gwen just in time and Gwen doesn't tell Grandpa Creepy that he left. Give it up writers. I'm never going to like her.
Back in Metallicar, Dean asks RoboSam if anything odd happened. RoboSam lies. Again. Dean pulls the car over and RoboSam admits that he was keeping Grandpa Creepy's nefarious plot from Dean because Dean would "mess it up. You'd shoot first, ask questions later, and we needed to ask questions." Dean wonders, "and did it ever occur to you that this is really shady?" RoboSam didn’t and Dean realizes that he has no instinct. Dean tells RoboSam that they do things his way or RoboSam can join Grandpa Creepy. Great scene by both! Jared does a great job with RoboSam.
Back at Creepy Compound, RoboSam tells Grandpa Creepy that he and Dean have separated. Come on. Does anyone believe RoboSam chose Grandpa Creepy over Dean? Anyone? I didn’t think so. Grandpa is glad to have RoboSam, but he isn't making him a general in the Campbell Soup Army until he's souled up. RoboSam is one sharp soldier and he turns on the GPS on Grandpa Creepy's phone. RoboSam rejoins Dean in the Impala. "You didn’t think I would come back." "I figured 60-40." Oh Dean of little faith, we all knew he was coming back. RoboSam explains Plan B and proceeds to make me laugh for the second time this episode by deadpanning that Grandpa Creepy "thinks Velcro is big news." Well, he has been dead since the 70's. He's still adjusting.
Over at Monster Torture Headquarters, Grandpa Creepy has AlphaVamp stuck in a haunted house prop reject, hands and feet nailed down and dead man's blood pumping full force. Grandpa decides this isn’t enough and throws the big old electric switch. AlphaVamp laughs. Grandpa Creepy leaves to find new persuasion techniques and AlphaVamp seriously needs a manicure as his nails elongate so he can scratch at the restraints. His tracker skills work through the dead man's blood though, as he asks Dean and RoboSam, "Are you two going to hide all night? Come on out boys." AlphaVamp tries to remind Dean of his good old vamp days, but Dean realizes that he can't "fire up that psychic Bat signal" with all the dead man's blood floating around. Dean follows Grandpa Creepy's persuasion technique and electrocutes AlphaVamp, but AlphaVamp is getting tired of it. "When your kind first huddled around the fire, I was the thing in the dark. Now you think you can hurt me." Still, AlphaVamp is in a chatty mood because soon he "will be ankle deep in your blood, sucking the marrow from your bones." Nice AlphaVamp. Maybe you should have dinner with Veritas sometime. Perhaps in purgatory. Which is what Grandpa Creepy is after. Apparently, when monsters die they don't go to heaven or hell; they go to purgatory and their "grandpappy" wants to know where it is located. But not for himself. "Well if the old man's Kermit, whose hand is up his" butt? Before we can get an answer, Grandpa Creepy, Christian, and Red Shirt walk in. On a side note, all Alphas have a Mommy, and the monster angle gets a whole lot more interesting. Maybe Lilith?
Dean and RoboSam are deweaponized in the hallway, and finally Dean gives Grandpa Creepy the smackdown he deserves. "Wow! You know I've seen some stupid in my time, but you take the crown. Putting Jaws in a fishbowl. Man, how do you think that's gonna end?" Grandpa makes an excuse but Dean's not having it. "Whatever you're doing, whatever you're hiding is going to put you and everyone around you in the ground." Dean deguns Gramps but Gwen is there. And it's stalemate. Until AlphaVamp breaks out and it's sayonara Red Shirt. For some reason Grandpa Creepy still thinks he's in charge but Dean quickly rectifies that. Dean splits them into groups but warns Grandpa Creepy, "if we make it through this, you, me, and Sam are having one hell of a family meeting." Good acting from the CSA here as they realize that the balance of power has shifted.
RoboSam, Grandpa Creepy and Christian check things out. Superhunter Christian lowers his gun and my heart dances gleefully because everyone knows that as soon as you let your guard down, you're a Vamp Happy Meal (Thanks Spike from Buffy). Guess you're not as good as you think you are Christian. Right on time, AlphaVamp snaps his neck and puts RoboSam in a headlock. Apparently no-souled hunters are good for vamp business and AlphaVamp fangs out. Say what? Christian's alive and pumping AlphaVamp with dead man's blood. WHAT!!! Christian is a black-eyed demon. No way! What the heck is going on here? The surprises keep coming as I am literally hanging on to the bed to keep from falling off. I love Supernatural! Dean rushes in, a light flashes, and AlphaVamp is now surrounded by a bunch of demons. At the risk of repeating myself, What!!! And then they all disappear, including AlphaVamp and Christian. My mind is now blown. Did NOT see that coming. Somewhere in the recess of my now numbed-mind, I hear pipes banging…or footsteps..or clapping. What the hell! It's Crowley! "Well that was dramatic!" King of Hell…try King of the Understatement! The twists are flying fast and furious now as Crowley states that Christian has been a demon for awhile now and Grandpa Creepy is his employee. Not only that, but the Winchesters are in his employ too. Grandpa Creepy admits that Crowley brought both he and Sam back, but Crowley kept the soul. He'll release Sam's soul in exchange for Alphas. Crowley really wants a condo in Purgatory it seems. The Winchesters think he's bluffing (and so do I) but Crowley claims he has the mojo for it. "So we clear. Me Charlie, you angels. Job's simple enough. Bring me creatures. Aim high on the food chain please. Everybody wins." And Crowley goes the way of Christian. I still sit clutching the bed edge. Not even Supernatural can be made of this much awesome right? All hail Sera!Thankfully we are at commercial break so my mind can refocus. And all the questions tumble in. How did Crowley amass so much power in such a small amount of time? How did Cas not see that Christian was a demon when he was in the same room with him? Is Crowley bluffing about it all, taking advantage of the situation? That sounds like him. What is so special about purgatory? It doesn't sound much better than hell. Thankfully 90210 comes to my rescue. Do you have to make it so easy? Last week you were celebrating underachievement. This week you fawn over Joe Jonas. My mind has sufficiently recovered enough to get through the episode's end.
Back at the Warehouse of Blown Minds, Grandpa Creepy tries to assert control but even Gwen isn't buying it. Still, he is her grandpa and cult leader so she gets the van. Meanwhile, RoboSam takes offense at Grandpa Creepy's lying face, as well he should. "Working with a demon, huh. You're not who I thought you were." Gramps tries to defend himself but goes too far when he says, "So the way I see it, you got 2 choices. Put a bullet in your grandfather or step aside." RoboSam wants option #1 but Dean let's Creepy by. RoboSam: "He sold us out." and my heart aches for him. Right until he rushes into Crowley's service. The Winchesters have always done things their own way so I have a hard time believing the first course of action is doing Crowley's bidding. Shouldn't they be on the phone with Bobby by now? Shouldn't they be calling out for Cas? At least look at the options before giving in the towel. The weird lighting has RoboSam's eyes looking yellow. And my uneasiness rises again. In my mind, I see Sam telling Dean not to shoot Crowley because "a deal is a deal." Once again I duck under the table. Is RoboSam hiding something? Is another twist around the corner? I want so much to believe this is Sam and that all my questions spur from the soul issue. I want to believe in my heart. My head yells differently. I don't trust Sam!
Next week - "Doubt leads to betrayal."

I loved this episode because it gave us lots of answers but I still have lots of questions. What did you think of RoboSam? Do you think he could be trusted?
ReplyDeleteI loved, loved, loved this episode. I do think that RoboSam is our Sam. He did want Dean to hunt with him in Exile and again in this episode. He knows that things are wrong and being with Dean makes it better. I think that Sam does intellectually get the whole right/wrong thing, but just can't see it when he is working. He is just thinking about the final outcome and any collateral damage that is left in his wake doesn't even compute.
ReplyDeleteI do think that Crowley could have gained that much juice is such a short time. Lilith was the #1 Demon and Crowley was her #1 in so many ways. He is resourceful if nothing else. Also, look at how powerful Cas has become in the last year. He was pretty much just a soldier up till now and now he is pretty much the head honcho. Crowley is in the same position. With Lilith, Allistair, and Lucifer all gone, he is the big cheese.
I was pretty accepting of all the answers we got. I know that there are others that are questioning a lot more, but the whole "Crowley sprung them and now is holding Sam's soul" makes sense to me. He wanted Samuel for his creature knowledge and also knows what suckers the Winchesters are for family. Also, he knows that when it comes to hunting...there is probably not a better duo. They did take down Heaven and Hell :)
AND I finally get why everyone in interviews was saying that Sam is like Dean in season 1. I had an epiphany while watching (the 3rd time) :) It isn't because he is kicking butt like season 1 Dean. It is his unquestioning family loyalty. Dean was so loyal to John and just would get so mad at Sam for always questioning everything John did. This Sam just doesn't question any order...he just does it. When the boys were having their roadside convo, Sam says, "but he's our grandfather". Like we need to listen to him cause he is family and gave an order.
I have a lot of questions too and I don't know if Crowley is bluffing or not... but anything is possible at this point... I loved the eps and loved the surprises I honestly think Sam is not trying to be deceiving and is just trying to trust Dean to be his soul until he can get it back... Dean has doubt and I don't blame him but I don't think they are going to turn Sam into this monster... I do believe him that he wants to get help- and I also believe he doesn't know what getting his soul back is going to mean for him... lots of questions for me too but I think Sam is trying to do the right thing... but also can't help being a hunter and wanting to do all he can to get info on the Alpha's but I don't think he can help it... it's just how he is right now... and those are my thoughts lol
ReplyDeleteHell no. I love Sam, but RoboSam - not so much - and I so don't trust him. Not as far as I could throw him (I'm 5'1" - so: not very far.)
ReplyDeleteIt's a relief that Sam can at least ease up on the fake feelings - that was starting to grate a bit. (actually it was puke making so..... yeah)
I get the feeling we're supposed to relax a little now we know Sam is soulless and that Crowley's driving the bus. Me, I don't believe it's that simple. Cause things on Supernatural just AREN'T that simple. I have no idea what's going on - (I seem to be saying that a lot - but it's true unfortunately) - but I think we are faaaaar from knowing everything, and what we do know - could be blatant misdirection.
Can't shake the feeling that Cas knows more than he's letting on. I can't quite put my finger on why - anyone else feeling the same? - got any ideas? But if that's true I can see big trouble when Dean finds out. Cause he sees Cas as family now.
AlphaMom? The mind boggles - yeah - boggles. Mommy Dearest to the nth degree.
Crowley. Well, what can I say? Badass King of Hell coercing my boys into doing dastardly deeds to get Sam's soul back. You SUCK Crowley! I love you but you SUCK. And do you even have Sam's soul? Just cause you say you do - and we can believe you right ? Cause you wouldn't tell porkies would you?
I loved this episode. I love this season. Whatcha got for us this week Sera?
ohh WOW, why doubt leads to betrayal.., it sound bad..., all i know dean doubt abt sam, so he will betrayal sam..? oohhhh plzz dont, i cant see fight between the brothers anymore..., but yeah i also wondering n curious to sam, did he honest to dean or still hide something?, if he sam with his soul, i will say he still hide something but now i cant predict react in his face...., look like he..., i dont know "not himself, or under control by something...? i hope sam is sam n no more hiding something from dean..., i hope im not watch them beating each other again...., LoL no i cant watch that happen again..., :(
ReplyDeletei love this epi, even with soulless sam but he choice dean over gramps n they work together again (even i always know sam will choice dean more than anyone) damn this show really can kill me :P
one thing is bother me, when alpha vamps fang out to sam, is he try to turn sam (because vamps-sam is a perfect animal for him) or want to suck dry sam blood?
btw love ur recap..., :D
So, I have been practically pacing back and forth today looking for your SPN recap, Dahne. :P
ReplyDeleteI just wanted to say that before I read it.
Yeah me too.
ReplyDeleteSam and Dean going into purgatory for some reason..., u think? so could be that in epi 11?, we saw dean walk with tessa rite? so where is sam..., i heard death also back in this epi, so can be sam walk with death? n dean asking tessa help to find sam..?,
ReplyDeleteif i notice alpha vamps said, if ppl with soul death they go to up or down, n sam have no soul, it make sense if he die n go to purgatory n dean find try to save him..., we know with some spell they can be in situation death n life so they can find a reaper...,
look like dean know that purgatory location, he have a vision when he get turn, i saw the map...,
wow this show getting better n better, the best season for me so far..., :D
I just thought purgatory would be a fun place for the writers to send them. Somewhere new and exotic, with all kinds of interesting monsters to beat the crap out of. ;)))
ReplyDeleteIn a way, I felt like this episode turned the table on how we should perceive Sam: calculative but ignorant of emotion. He is merely grasping at ideas from his former life, like trusting "family"--it seemed like he had to reason with himself that Grandpa was trustworthy just because Sam had a strong belief in family pre-hell. I won't say I trust him either, as I'd hate to completely say "oh it's Sam again! HURRAY" cause he IS still sans soul, but I breathed a little lighter this episode after that situation sort've cooled off. I really hope he is Sam (I am calling him Sam-Lite for now on) and then all these bombs that fell during this episode completely rattled my little mind. The scene with the triple reveal (at least) was absolutely amazing. My jaw was on the floor! I couldn't believe how well that was laid out for us. As for Gwen, I don't hate her anymore. I don't like her, but I don't hate her. Christian however? I swear to God I almost left the room with his comments in the hallway regarding Lisa. I really got THAT invested--I mean really. I got REALLY pissed off at that one. And to see in retrospect that it was a Demon--I should've known. Kudos Sera Gamble. You are so close to the level of Eric Kripke it's kinda scary. Also, the gore factor this season is makin' me smile. I believe that Sera Gamble (along with a few other SPN people) are the reason why I am suddenly a gore hound. I never liked gory things before, but dang, it just gets better and better as the show goes on! :P
ReplyDeleteyeah, i agree its must be interesting to watch... well even i hope no one of the brothers death again..., but is must be great story..., :D
ReplyDeleteI found a mistake in this episode.
ReplyDeleteWhen Castiel gives Gramps an 'Angel Cavity Search' and Christian ran in with a shotgun when he heard the old man scream why didnt Cass see that Christian was possessed???
As we've learned, angels and demons see eachothers true faces thru vessels but when Cass looked at Christian when he stormed in, he remained calm.
Only explenation is that he didn't care that there's a friggin' demon on the door but that's impossible
Oh my God. This episode was so awesome! I'm with you, Supernatural is just amazing. When they pull out eps like this, they truly are top of the TV tree. I hope Sam is Sam and not Darkside-Sam. My heart couldn't bare anymore betrayl. I am taking him on face value and hoping for the best. I hope that the boys try and work together and Dean operates as Sam's soul until they can get his back. But I agree, they usually try and work out a way to work around those trying to pull their strings. And Crowley has been pulling their strings for a while, if you think about how he set up Lucifer last season. Seems he's always been planning this big play and the boys have already been his unwitting pawns, merrily pushing Lucifer back into the cage and Michael for good measure, all because of information Crowley so conveniently made available to them. There were so many answers given to us and so many more questions and so much more to unravel. It made my head spin. I am really loving season 6 for it's maturity, great scripts and nice gore! Oh and I love the idea of them going to Purgatory, at least one of them, for a look-see. I am busting for the Tessa/Death ep. Your write up was great and made me laugh a bunch of times. Thanks! Bring on the next ep!
ReplyDeleteIn MBV Castiel could tell that a guy's soul was still in his dead body by just running his hand over the corpse. He was able to tell that the soul had been transfered to a suitcase just by feel. Now the only way he can tell if someone is souled or not is if he tortures them AND he misses an active demon? I'm starting to wonder exactly what "regrettable things" Castiel has been doing and do they involve lying to Dean more than Sam has?
ReplyDeleteThat's on my list of Things That Confuse Me too. It makes no sense that if Cas has supermojo he keeps missing basic things like demons and soulless people. I don't buy that he is merely distracted either. This is either a huge plot hole or there is something going on here as well.
ReplyDeleteYeah I noticed these things as well...Maybe it's just a couple plot holes, but maybe not. Honestly, they changed the way people get possessed on this show, they changed the croatoan virus, they tweak things here and there so it's possible that it's just something like that as well. Maybe it was just something to add drama...? I don't know, I'm just as confused as you are...
ReplyDeleteloved this Dahne. :P
ReplyDeleteThanks as always for your support guys. It would have been up Saturday night except I had a harder time writing this one than the others. It's hard to say how much I liked this episode without sounding like a drunk girl at a frat party. For me, this episode regrounded me in Supernatural. I was one of the naysayers as to how this season would progress because it's hard to top the Apocalypse. I like standalone eps but I couldn't see the mytharc. I never thought of purgatory. However, this episode with its continuous surprises, varied answers, and most important, significant shaping of the new mytharc gives me a glimpse of what post-5 Supernatural will be like. I have to say I'm excited about it in a way I haven't been before. The preceding episodes were good but this showed me all we have to look forward to in the Sera years. I can't wait for the ride!
ReplyDeleteI'm the same in regards to how I feel about Sam. I still don't trust him but I don't hate him because it's not his fault his soul was left behind. And with Gwen, I never really hated her to begin with and this episode I was really hoping that people's mostly negative views on her would change.
ReplyDeleteI don't think Christian was a demon at first. I think a demon took possession of his body after the vamp killed him.
ReplyDeleteI thoroughly enjoyed your recap. Your commentary had me weak, especially the 90210 stuff. And lol @ Campbell Soup Army.
ReplyDeleteI dont know why but calling Sam , Sam -thing cracked me up .Great recap.
ReplyDeleteI was thinking about some of your questions about Castiel and the whole sticking his hand inside of Sam to find out if he doesn't have a soul and the fact that he could wave his hand over the body to figure that out last season. I am thinking because the soul was in the case and so close Cas could feel it there. However with Sam he needed to confirm that the soul wasn't there and the only way to do that is to invade his body. The same way he needed to find out the name of the angel from the boy. It was inscribed on the soul somehow and the only way for him to read the soul is to invade the body. Just an idea.
ReplyDeleteI loved this episode! I thought it was fantastic! We finally got some answers to why Sam has been acting the way he is. Looking at him, it would seem that something is definitely missing-yes, I know his soul-but, just like Dean said, Sam is a robot, but I am thinking more like a zombie. But, this explains a lot-his lack of emotion, his freezing up-everything. So, we find out that since Lucifer is gone, our buddy who we love to hate, Crowley, is now "king of hell" (suits him right) and he is the one who holds the key to Sam's soul with the help of Grandpa and his cronies (the family). It might be a stupid question, but did creepy Grandpa sell his sould to Crowley? I am glad that Christian is gone-he had to go-and I hope Gwen is next. She looks familiar-was she in the episode where there was a girl who waited outside a campus building for the professor (in the cold) and the professor supposedly committed suicide? This was the one where we first met the Trickster. This Alpha stuff I still do not get. But, I do understand the concept of Purgatory (limbo between heaven and hell)-my Catholic roots help to understand this. Dean did not know, but Sam did. So, Sam's sould is in Purgatory? Not a good place to be for anyone. I was hoping that once the amulet was found, that is where Sam's soul would be! Wishful thinking on my part, I know, but still, hope springs eternal. Cas looked especially stressed and at a loss for answers regarding Sam. I hope he can help Dean and Sam. I hope Bobby can help, too. This week we should get some more answers and I cannot wait!
ReplyDeleteWhat can I say? I love the boys, so with me they will always have the benefit of a doubt. Whatever they do to one other I will forgive them as they always seem to forgive each other.
ReplyDeleteIs Sam - well Sam? I think yes.
Is he done lying? Yeah, when hell freezes over or Dean stops kicking ass...
Not for one minute do I believe we are done with this mytharc (Sam get soul back, everly happy after). There will be a Twist, and a big one I´m sure of it!
I think last episode was just the beginning...
Weird lighting has his eyes looking yellow? I never saw that. =O Can you link me to a screenshot of it or something?
ReplyDeleteMaybe this had something to do with Cas's sudden departure. It may have been a sign of something for Cas.
ReplyDeleteI've watched it 3 times and I don't think it happened.
ReplyDeleteLOL! You and me both! I've watched it through three times and even slowed it down with my player to see if it was a flash and I missed it, but there is nothing there showing his eyes being yellow. Glad I'm not the only one. =P
ReplyDeleteI agree. If Sam wasn't Sam or if something else was going on, I think Cas would have picked up on it. Remember the brandings Cas put on their ribs in a previous episode? I think this may have something to do with nothing else possessing Sam.
ReplyDeleteI think Dean will be Sam's soul too. I think it will be Dean taking care of Sam like old times. It could be a hilarious plot twist.
ReplyDeleteI've decided that I'm not going to believe anything any character says (except Dean) until there is proof. Is Sam going to Winchester-up and listen to Dean? Hope so, but not counting on it. Dean was right in his assessment that RoboSam does not know the difference between what is and isn't important. And Sam's always been a bit arrogant in believing he was right. I don't see that changing but actually getting worse considering now he doesn't have that pesky conscience to deal with. Dean needs to watch his back. RoboSam did seem genuinely unaware of Gpa's duplicity, but I'm not sure he'll simply trust his brother's intuition even though it's been proven over and over that soul or no soul, Dean's instincts about people are usually right on the money.
ReplyDeleteDoes Crowley really have Sam's soul? Doubt it. He's the king of manipulation and will use anything to his advantage. But I can't see a demon -- even the king of Hell -- having the mojo to pull anything or anyone from a cage that is a prison created by Heaven. I would think it would have to be impenetrable for any denizen of Hell, including whomever is currently the head honcho. Angels aren't stupid and it apparently held Lucifer for millennium, so....
Is Cas on Dean's side? I would like to think so, but the 'regrettable things' comment wasn't just arbitrary, so I believe he's got an agenda also.
And don't forget about Balthazar and his soul collecting, I'm sure that ties in somehow. Poor Dean, he's the only one who's playing straight in this entire mess. He'll get screwed. He always does. But he will find a way to save Sam and beat them at their own game, but what a ride until that happens!!
i watch abt 6 or 7x i also dont saw that happen.., nothing wrong with sam eyes :P
ReplyDeleteGreat episode, even though my favourite of the season has to be "Weekend at Bobby's". Speaking of which, if only Grampa Creepy was more upfront about what he knew so that when Sam and Dean had Crowley's bones at their mercy they could have added to the demand list. Sigh.
ReplyDeleteBack to this episode; issue #1, RoboSam. I think it is Sam, but he can't yet be trusted. He has all the memories of our beloved Sammy and he tries using those memories to act as close to Sammy as possible, but without the emotions and understanding he falls short by a lot. It leaves us with a sort of bipolar Robo-Sam who is all mission-oriented one second and fake sympathy the next. Hopefully the writers won't wait until the season finale to get Sam his soul back (cough cough, hint hint).
issue #2 - Grampa Creepy and his merry men. To be fair, I had never hated the relatives. Unlike the most fans, I liked both Ruby and Bela (as villains; I never trusted Ruby, but I liked her as a badguy). As long as the show stays focused on Sam and Dean, I'll always welcome secondary characters who can add a whole new dimension and/or plot point. And man, what a plot point this is. Besides, if you try it from another perspective, they aren't so bad. I don't see RoboSam really sharing all with his cousins, so they probably don't know just how good Dean is or how much he really did before "retiring". And its almost better this way since you know they'll have to eat their words once Sam and Dean get back to the rhythm and show them how hunting is really done. They also provide comic relief - I find it funny that the writers need to kill a Cambell each episode they feature in (I mean come on; just how many Cambells are there?). I need to start making a pool on how each Cambell will meet their horrific end.
issue #3 - Crowley. I get that Crowley is the new head honcho since Lilith, Azazel and Alistair are out of the picture, but being the one responsible for Sam having no soul - I can't believe it. I don't think he has that kind of mojo even with his upgrade. I think he is making the most of the situation, and he's honest with his want of the Alphas and purgatory, but I don't think he's the true puppet master of the season.
issue #4 - Purgatory. I think it's a great idea, not only since it opens a whole new playing field to explore along with Heaven and Hell, it gives a chance to bring back some familiar faces. When I heard that the writers were thinking of bringing back Gabriel and Azazel I thought it was kind of lame; it's one thing to bring back Sam and Dean (and Cas I guess) since they are the main characters, but to resurrect every single character the fans like gets rid of a whole lot of credibility for the show. But if - actually, who are we kidding - when the boys go to purgatory they'll probably meet Azazel and Zachariah and company there too. 'Cause it isn't like dead demons and angels go back to heaven and hell either. Actually, that might be what Crowley is after - I feel his rank comes more with his powers of persuasion and ability to think 5 steps ahead than pure mojo. So if he's able to tap into purgatory and release big players like Lilith and Azazel in exchange for their loyalty or service or something, Crowley would be unstoppable.
heck no !
ReplyDeleteI absolutely agree with everything you've said. :D
ReplyDeleteI'm less and less convinced that Crowley has Sam's soul. I wonder if somehow it ended up in purgatory? Something to do with the all the demon blood he chugged in Swan Song? Or something to do with who actually pulled him out of the cage? Don't know. This episode answered too many questions too easily for my liking. It just doesn't sit right you know? I just feel itchy.
And I'm worried about Cas. Something is just not right with him, and I get the feeling it's not just the war in heaven.
So, Dean has to be Sam's conscience/moral compass/whatever, but Sam can be the cool, clinical, calculating side of the operation (which is great as long as HE doesn't screw Dean over).
Time for Dean to take charge (oh it did my heart good to see him put Grandpa in his place) and sort these suckers out once and for all.
I know - I loved Dean just getting in Gpa's face and telling him they were gonna have a long talk when this was over. :D Dean could be Sam's moral compass/conscience, but the real question is whether or not Sam is capable of following his lead. Sam is an über-hunter now. So far, he's only been guided by his own black and white ideals concerning the successful completion of the hunts. Will he actually be able to break that habit after an entire year of not dealing with the gray areas in order to follow Dean's lead? Will he be able to discern where the actual line is? I'm not so sure. Sam seems sincere, but without a soul, how sincere can you actually be? I don't expect Dean to just start to trust him and treat him any different than he has been. He still doesn't know what Sam is or if he's really Sam without his soul. Not even Cas could answer that question. His only motivation is to save his brother, but he's not going to just blindly trust something simply because it's wearing Sam's face.
ReplyDeleteYou're right. Lots of questions got answered, but I think some of those answers are just misdirects. Cas thought Sam's soul was still in the cage, Crowley claims he has it... who really knows? I don;t think either of them are right, I think there are a lot of twists yet to come!
Do you think SAM can be trusted?
ReplyDeleteHELL NO :))
Sam is a big man-child at the mo...... albeit....an extremely calculating, manipulative sasquatch of a man-child....he's not educated in the MORALITY zone at the moment.... and you can see the "why,Dean...why? " written all over his face, when dean does something, that involves feelings... that are completely alien to Sam.
Add in his Self-righteousness + Stubbornness + Control issues = TOTAL F**KING DISASTER :((
He's letting Dean drive the bus cause HE wants to.... that can change at any moment.... I'm expecting this to happen. He's too unpredictable, and he tends to do Sociopathic things, right there in the moment.
Dean is hot headed under pressure and getting scared = anger to him...OH Dean... that never solves anything :(
Dean needs to stop barking orders at him.... that's gonna suck in the long run...Sam will just REBEL.
Dean needs to approach this like a parent explaining to a child or explaining a different point of view.
" OOOOKAY Sam you wanna murder someone.... well that's not a good idea... cause BLAH, BLAH, BLAH "
MHO- I really do feel for him..... but he's dangerous in this state... he can't be trusted.... Sammy was all about the EMPATHY. This Sam is a SOCIOPATH in every sense of the word... He'll try, but essentially won't get it... and he will slip.
I can be dissapointed temporarily... but i won't get mad... cause NO SOUL SAMMY :(((
As for CROWLEY:
My stance on this: He's clever+ manipulative= LYING LIAR WHO LIES :))
MHO- this is too simple for supernatural therefore total MISDIRECTION. He may have brought
Crowley said it himself that Christian had been his for 2 years at least...
ReplyDeleteYeah, I suspect misdirection too.
ReplyDeleteThe twists were still awesome though :)
