Musings On One Of The Reasons I Love Supernatural

5 Nov 2010

One evening at about five thirty my boss walked into my office. He seemed a little hesitant to begin the conversation. I have had these moments myself. They come when you know that you don’t really talk to this person aside from work, and you have some supervisory position, so you want to seem friendly and ask him/her some innocuous aspect of his/her personal life. He told me that he had wanted to ask me about what I was reading, but that I always am reading some classic book of great societal or political import which would make him feel he wasn’t reading enough intellectual material. It is true that I often read classics, and they are generally in the Gothic Fiction genre. He decided that curiosity got the better of him and he was going to ask anyway…and in a way that looked pained, he asked me what book I was reading.

I told him that it was a novelization based on my favorite television show where two hot brothers travel around America in a classic car fighting monsters and demons, and fornicating with women. He breathed a big sigh of relief and smiled ear to ear. He told me that sounded like a great book.

Well, the book left much to be desired, but the show is great. I am of course talking about Supernatural on The CW, Fridays at 9pm est. And yes, this is generally the way I summarize Supernatural when I am quickly describing it for someone. Especially if the person I am trying to get to watch the show is not a big scifi/fantasy/horror fan. Of course it is only the surface, easy premise line of the story. The show itself means far more than that.

I could go into many details about the show, explaining away all the different elements and how they relate to just the day to day. There is the importance of family, difficulties with addiction for both the addict and those that love him/her, coming to terms with who you are, taking responsibility for past mistakes, and there's that whole free will versus destiny thing. Any one of those I could write an entire blog article on. I probably will, too. Today, though, I wanted to write about the show in more general terms, and an epiphany I had about it.

One of the more central themes is that of an ordinary life versus an extraordinary life. Sam and Dean don’t generally talk about their lives as hunters as being “extraordinary”, but it is more than the ordinary, and so yes, “extra” ordinary. At the very beginning, in the pilot episode, we know that Sam had left the life. He had “abandoned” Dean and Dad and gone to college. He was graduating and getting ready to go to law school. His plan was to marry his girlfriend, Jessica, and fully realize the ordinary, normal life, complete with the white picket fence, fighting over who had the greenest lawn, probably the 2.3 children, the works. Sam is pulled back into the family business when Dad goes missing and Dean comes by for help. After, when Jessica dies in a fire on the ceiling, the same way that Sam and Dean’s mom died, Sam is back in the life. At first he's back primarily for revenge, but it changes later on. Dean at first seems to think an ordinary life is out of the realm of possibility for him, but wants it for his brother. Now, six seasons in, Dean is the one who tried having a normal life, and is brought back into the fold by Sam.

All talk on Supernatural about Sam and/or Dean living an “ordinary, apple pie” kind of life is baffling to my very Aquarian personality. I will admit that the extraordinary fascinates me. Most people guess this by my love of the genre. In this case, though, it is more than that. I wrestle with how they could go back to an ordinary life after seeing what they’ve seen. Sam and Dean know that there is crazy evil out there. How could they just sit idly by and let horrible things happen? How could they not be the heroes they are? Furthermore, how can anyone decide against joining the fight once he/she knows the truth? Could anyone live a normal life—go work a basic 9-5 job, be a soccer mom, maybe drive his/her kid to hockey practice, or go to PTA meetings if he/she knew there was absolute evil out there trying to bring on the end of the world? I would think that knowing demons are out there possessing people, and evil monsters eating people would be enough to make someone decide that the “details” had to be put aside. We all need to save people, and hunt evil things! Who could worry about health insurance when people’s lives are on the line!

And then it hit me. The mini-epiphany I mentioned earlier? WE DO THIS EVERY DAY. We know there is evil out there. We have all seen it. We see it every day on television, in the paper, on the internet. Maybe not vampires, werewolves or demons, but we see evil. In our world, today, there are acts of genocide being perpetuated. There are people hungry and homeless. There are people murdered in their homes as they sleep. We know this stuff is out there, yet how many of us do anything about it?

We go through our lives living day to day, focusing on our own problems, our own achievements or failures. Often times, if something horrible touches our lives, it spurns us into action. Otherwise, we turn a blind eye to it. We leave the fight to people willing to take it on for one reason or another. We don’t make the fight our own.

This is why I have so much love for smart scifi/fantasy/horror. So much about human nature can be explored in these shows. I once tried to explain on a date to someone that Buffy the Vampire Slayer was not a show about some chick fighting vampires, it was a show about a teenage girl facing her demons. He thought I was crazy. Well, maybe I do overanalyze, but I think the point with art is to make you think. Pablo Picasso once said “Art is a lie that makes us realize truth.” So now I ask, what are you taking with you from your shows? Because if you want to overanalyze with me, I suggest you check out the two brothers who are battling their demons, and fighting the good fight.

  1. You know, you really raise some interesting points. I really love Supernatural even though I have some reservations about certain aspects. I'm always defending the show coz people dont give it a chance and they think that it's not serious or profound.

  2. Well written. I particularly like the point about these two people taking the extraordinary step of making this fight their own. It takes a steel will beyond description to do what those two do every day and it's why I always thought characters on the show were too hard on Sam for the whole demon blood thing. As long as it's kept in check it's a positive, not a negative. When you're fighting unspeakable evil you shouldn't nitpick so much.

  3. I'm not really sure I "get" this article.

The comparison between the Hunters and us in the regular world is flawed. Firstly, Dean and Sam were trained from a young age to fight these demons. Regular people are typically *not* trained from a young age to deal with murderers, rapists, etc.

To compare the average Joe to Dean & Sam being able to leave that life behind doesn't make sense. Although there are monsters in the world today, WE generally don't go out and fight it (cops, etc, excluded). Hunters live that life.

Now, a comparison between Hunters and Cops would be a good one. Both see brutal and violent things. Both would consider leaving that life. Could they? Even retired cops have trouble letting go of it.

Anyway, it was a well written article. I'm just not convinced the line "WE DO THIS EVERY DAY" really holds up.

  4. An experience I've recently had with Supernatural that pretty much showed the intensity of it's effect on people: I went to the commuter lounge at my university a couple weeks ago--filled with about 30-40 lounging people--VERY LOUD and annoying. Nobody wanted to choose something on tv and I knew TNT would have a showing of SPN at 11 so I turned it there. It was "Sam, Interrupted"--a good episode that delved into the psyche of the brothers and explained a little of how they felt about their situations: Dean's exposition about why he has to save everyone, and Sam's realization of how his anger has been there all along--however generally this episode is seen as pseudo-filler to most fans and even I write it off as an episode between Abandon All Hope and My Bloody Valentine (lol).

But that's not the point. A few minutes after I changed the channel to SPN, people began to ask "What is this!??" And then it got quiet. People watched the whole episode, and then after it was over, the noise began again. The next week I came in and they were watching it WITHOUT ME. This room full of people who didn't even know what the show was completely loved it so much that for about a month (before the tv service went screwy in there) they watched SPN everyday on TNT...
    Ahhhh...the power of SPN. :)

  5. Thought provoking. Rewatching Season One this week made me stop and wonder about how the boys got enough love to be able to care about others. So I agree that there are underlying themes that can be related back to our own lives.Well done Nicole ::))

  6. Thought provoking Nicole. Rewatching early Season One this week...I wondered how the boys got enough love to care so much for others. So there is definately a place for our daily life with this show. Well done::))

  7. This is a very good article. I have always been a fan of Supernatural and oftentimes I find myself in a situation where I would ask myself: "What if this will happen to me?". There's a great deal of truth in their stories that most people don't see.

  8. Wilson, we need to send you out into the world to convert the rest of the unbelievers out there!

Hey I just had a thought - you know how in appliance stores they always have all the tvs on so you can see the quality of the picture? We could go out there and make sure they're all tuned to Supernatural - or put DVDs in their players?

    ReplyDelete
  9. We should do a flashmob Supernatural scene.

    ReplyDelete
  10. Great idea! What should we do? Sam's 'high as a kite' scene from Sam Interrupted springs to mind - I'll be Sam, since they gave him 'everything'. You can be Dean.

  11. 'Spectaculacular'

    ReplyDelete
  12. Interesting thoughts - thanks for sharing.
For me Supernatural is purely entertainment. I truly don't want to think about anything 'deep and meaningful' when I watch it. I can read a newspaper or go online if I want a reminder of the horrors going on in the real world. Supernatural is escapism at its best. If I started putting too much effort into analyzing it, it would lose its appeal for me, I think.

  13. Hey Wilson - you just gave me my 5 hundred and oneth 'like'. Thank you so much. I feel so special. :)))

    ReplyDelete
  14. Supernatural is a wonderful escapism show which makes it so accessible to so many different types of people.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Hey Wilson - where's my LIKE?

    ReplyDelete
  16. Same for me too.

On the flipside, it's good that Supernatural isn't just "pure escapism" and can be related to from a real-world perspective. Truly the mark of an awesome show.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Right again - as usual. ;)

  18. Baha. They should call me Hungry Ego.

    Or just Douche.

    ReplyDelete
  19. He obviously likes my 'Spectaculacular' better than your "PUDDING!" - and quite rightly, too - it's not that easy to spell you know.

Or maybe he just likes me better than he likes you.

    ReplyDelete
  20. Either would probably work. ;)))

    ReplyDelete
  21. But... but... the PUDDING scene had Jensen naked. NAKED!

And also, everybody likes everybody else better than me. I'm a lone emo.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Yeah but Wilson probably doesn't care about Jensen naked.

And I like you - not quite sure why - you're so needy.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Like I said before. I'm married.

    Someone has to like me.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Hi, everyone :)

One of the reasons i love supernatual is, because it's about the importance of family, and all the complexities that comes with that. There's so much messy/complex emotions involved but over all LOVE. :)

I really respond to this, as i am a very loving person... and also, even though this is a supernatural show... i can really identify with it on a realistic level. these guys emotions feel real and make you FEEL too. You go on the journey and feel it all.

They never give up, even when they want to... they are always there in the end, for humanity and, each other.

When you look at their lives... Lets face it... their lives are S**t.. but i dunno...It makes you want something... but you're not quite sure what that is.

    So yeah... that <3

  25. Why I love Supernatural?

Sam, Dean, Impala, Hunting things, Saving people!

    ReplyDelete
  26. I like the way they never give up and care for each other. And of course I like the car. So I agree with all of you.

But, I also like the actors very much (not the naked way you tink....although). I respond to them. Most show, when there is drama and crying I think, ok that´s sad but that´s it. With Supernatural I learned to not sit in front of my TV without tissues. For a couple of minutes I amost forget that they are not real. I feal with the characters. For me that makes good entertainment.

    yeah, I am a wussy.

    ReplyDelete
  27. I started out the same way you are now. However, I did get into the deep meaning of the show. I actually feel that it influences my decisions, like the free will vs. Destiny in Season 5. It's helped me to get a better understanding of family. But you know the main reason I watch the show? The angst. I love me some angst!

    ReplyDelete
  28. Why I love Supernatural?

Brother relationship, Impala, Dean, Sam, Bobby, Snark, Music (oh I miss you), Action, Purpose, Humor, Horror/Scary Villains, Emo Light, many many other things, Angst

    ReplyDelete
  29. Why I loathe the CW?

For one - this: "Airing two episodes (of TVD) each night from Monday, Dec. 13 through Friday, Dec. 17 (8:00-10:00p.m. ET/PT), The CW will rebroadcast the first 10 episodes of the second season of its addictive hit The Vampire Diaries across its entire primetime schedule that week." (from SpoilerTV of course)

I can probably name as many reasons why I loathe the CW as I can for why I love Supernatural.

    ReplyDelete
  30. I get what you're saying. I remember being very intrigued by the whole free will / destiny thing. I kind of like that whole 'up yours - we'll do this OUR way' attitude the boys have - nothing like thinking outside the box.
Don't get me wrong. I'm fully aware of all the 'deep and meaningful' parallels that can be drawn between what happens in SPN and real life. Occasionally I do sit contemplate the wider meaning.

But mostly I just want to be caught up in the general awesome fantasticness that is Supernatural.

    ReplyDelete
  31. I really miss the music too.

Hey Sera can we please have some more snark? - oh and we desperately need some more humor too. Everyone's getting really, really grumpy with each other because we're so worried about Sam - and Dean too (he's not handling things so well right now). We need some major laughs soon. Cas seems so worried, too - Misha's gonna get wrinkles for gosh sakes. Oh and don't forget the music.

Please listen to us - don't forget we voted and voted and voted till we had sore fingers, numb bums and blurry eyes.

    ReplyDelete
  32. I believe they already call you the latter. :P

    ReplyDelete
  33. Well, SPN has to go on hiatus at some point for filming new episodes, so why not pimp out their best-performing show in the meantime? Hell, at least it isn't baseball like on FOX.

    ReplyDelete
  34. I honestly don't know how a show like this could be called "pure escapism"...It's just so freakin' dark, violent, and striking...It's my favorite show for these very reasons, and the comedy and the production, acting, etc. all leads to a very entertaining show, but DAMN, I am usually wore out by the time an episode is over. My escapism tv show? The Closer. lol "Thayynkkhew!" I just love me Some Kyra Sedgwick.

    ReplyDelete
  35. Perhaps 'pure escapism' was the wrong term for me to use. Supernatural takes me away from my day to day life - there is very little in my life that equates with Sam and Dean's. No monsters, no life on the road, no hustling pool or credit card fraud, no need to carry a shotgun/knife/holy water/lock pick etc, no fight to the death/getting the crap beaten out of me. I could keep going.

The only things I have in common with them are my love of: family, classic rock and bacon cheeseburgers.

It is definitely dark, violent and striking - and yeah - I'm often exhausted by the end of an episode. I wouldn't want my life to be like theirs - it's too painful for a start - but I can visit their life for a short time. That's what makes it pure escapism for me, and knowing I can go there whenever I want.

Thanks Wilson for making stop and think about why I said what I said.

I've never watched The closer. Maybe I should give it a shot.

    ReplyDelete
  36. We desperately need a humor episode. Not just a scene or two of easy banter, but an actual gut-busting, choking for air, almost falling of the couch comedy. It doesn't even have to be the whole episode. Remember Changing Channels. It became a mytharc-changer but we still laughed for 25 minutes beforehand. I will beg if I have to. Fan fangs have come out and inner monsters have been unleashed on SPN sites, even this one. Please give us a guffaw before people start getting devoured. (I saw that movie and it wasn't pretty.)

    ReplyDelete
  37. Who are "they" and where can I find them?

Need to send them a list of "modern" insults to use. "Douche" is so three years ago.

    ReplyDelete
  38. I bought the box set a couple years back. Season 2. My sister was on her computer in front of the TV so she didn't really notice that I put it on. Sometimes she would mutter the occasional: "What the hell is this kaitie?" if a demon or monster showed up. Eventually though, I would notice that when I put it on, she would come in and sit down with her computer. She would tell my Dad that it was a "stupid show" that she wasn't "watching". However, once I got to AHBL part 1, I looked over in the end, and she was crying.

  39. Supernatural's scariest monsters ever are its disgruntled, worried, or seriously p****ed off fans.

No salt, holy water, silver knife or dead man's blood can stop a Supernatural fan on the rampage.

But a darn good laugh will at least help to minimise the carnage.

    ReplyDelete
  40. Oh god, now I can't stop smiling:) the article is great, and the comments are so enthusiastic. It's great to know that fans all around the world are crazy about this awesome show, and we have a place to discuss it:) Sometimes I feel like I'm alone with this obsession of mine, although I have friends who watch and love the show, but they just enjoy watching it, and almost faint every time one of them takes off his shirt:) Yes it's an important factor of the show, but it's more than that. The storyline is complicated, the actors and the characters are great, it's all about family in a bloody way with monsters and crocottas and crazy things like that. An episode can make you laugh and cry in the same, with awesome songs, and graphical solutions. And the Impala. Do I have to say more??? Sam and Dean are probably the best characters ever created, I think. Kripke we all love you and your team for creating this show for us:)))

    ReplyDelete
  41. Your story made me smile! =]

I think the problem with people and Supernatural is that some people don't even give it a chance. They'll go I hate that and they won't even watch it! Then they watch it and there are like OMG I LOVE IT! Lol! I for one LOVEEEEE Supernatural and I don't know how you cannot love it. That show is just simply AMAZING and so are Dean and Sam!!!!!<33333
