Torchwood: The New World - New Character Details

Ever since since the announcement that next years's Torchwood: The New World would be bringing fresh blood to the Torchwood universe, we've been wondering: Who the heck are these people? And how will they change the series we've come to love? Well, we just learned some more about these four new characters.

New information has emerged concerning Rex Matheson and Esther Katusi, the two CIA agents who will join returning characters Captain Jack Harkness (John Barrowman), Gwen Cooper (Eve Myles) and her husband Rhys (Kai Owen); as well as a convicted murderer and pedophile by the name of Oswald Jones.

Doctor Who Magazine reports that: "Esther will be 'very much an optimist' and a Christian with 'a strong faith in mankind.' The character will also fall 'head-over-heels in love' with partner Rex." (We're kind of wondering if we are to see a repeat of the Tosh and Owen storyline here. We hope not.)

As for Oswald Jones (you've got to hand it to Russell T Davies and the Torchwood creative team to decide to introduce such a highly controversial type of character): "The 'dangerous and clever' Jones will also appear to 'regret his evil past' and 'is fated to become the centre of terrifying events.'"

Seems like a fourth character by the name of Dr. Vera Juaraz will also make her debut as a series regular. She will apparently "become caught up in the Torchwood team's mission."

Casting for these characters is still ongoing, with the series scheduled to begin filming early next year in the U.S.

Torchwood: The New World is expected to air next summer on Starz in the U.S. and on BBC One in the UK.
