SpoilerTV - Ratings Analysis - Friday September 24 to Thursday September 30 by Chris Roberts
This begins first address on ratings. This will cover Friday September 24 to Thursday September 30.This Is not to debate quality of shows.Nor Is it to debate the fairness of the Nielson system.
Friday(For disclosure the only show I watch here is Smallville)
ABC
Reruns of Modern Family and Better with You did decently In overall ratings(4.2 and 3.1) but among the 18-49 year old audience both were beaten by Smallville(Modern Family with 1.2 and Better with You with 0.9 VS Smallville's 1.3) Rerun of the Whole Truth did even worse with 2.9 In total viewers and 0.7 among 19-49 audence.20/20 was ABC's best performance with 5.4 Million In total viewers and a 1.5 among 18-49 yearolds.
CBS
Dominates the night.Medium had 6 million viewers and tied Dateline among 18-49 with a 1.4.However Medium should not get cocky.CBS primarily cares about total viewers.Back In 2006 Joan of Arcedia had dropped from 10 million to 8 Million and was canceled.CSI:NY had 10 Million viewers but a 2.0 In 18-49 but remember younger viewers are not a huge part of the CSI audience.Blue Blood got 12 Million and a 2.2.The best showing by a CBS show.Medium was the only CBS not to win It's timeslot among total viewers.
NBC
Datline won the first hour among total viewers with 6.5(But truthfully IS bare win over Medium) while it tied with Medium In the 18-49 yearolds. Dateline NBC had 7.9 among total Viewers and 1.8.Outlaw meanwhile arrived on Friday In seriously trouble it got 5 million barely losing In overall Viewers to 20/20 but got 1.1 In the 18-49 year olds. This is the second worst Network Show that Is not a rerun on Fridays among 18-49 year olds.
FOX
Rerun of Human target got 3-1 In Total viewers and 0.6 among 18-49 year olds.It just barely beat Smallville among total viewers but lost to Smallville among 18-49.Fans of Human Target should be glad they are being moved to another night(Why didn't they do for Firefly or DollHouse) The Good Guys arrived on life support. with 2.9 In total viewers and 0.9 among 19-49 year olds. The worst on Friday among 18-49
CW
Season premiere of the final season of Smallville arrived with 2.9 In total viewers. This Is almost as good as the second half of last season's Smallville:Absolute Justice telefilm. And beat most of CW'S last week shows(Except The vampire Diaries and Nikita) and got a 1.3 among 18-49. Beating Modern Family,Better with You,and Human Target. This Is all with little promotion.Supernatural got 2.8 among total viewers barely losing to the Good Guy and rerun of The Whole truth but beat them among the 18-49 audience
Sunday(I only watch Simpsons)
ABC
Extreme Makeover Edition Is losing some steam with a 7.7 among all viewers tying with the Simpsons but with 2.3 among 18-49 actually was beaten by The Simpsons.Desperate Housewives Is showing it's age with a 12.9 but losing to Family Guy among 18-49 with a 4.2.Brothers and Sisters continues to have problems holding onto Desperate Housewives audience with 9.3 In total viewers and a 2.8 among 18-49
CBS
60 Minutes won the first hour but lose to football and The Simpsons with Younger viewers. The Amazing race came In third In total viewers but last among 18-49 audence.
NBC
Football won the 18-49 audience on Sunday. And only 60 Minutes was able to beat it among all viewers
Fox
The SImpsons proved after 20 years It can still draw viewers with a 7.7 among all viewers tying Extreme Makeover and a 3.7 among 18-49.It among younger viewers actually beat Extreme makeover edition. The Cleveland show held to most of the Simpsons audience with a 6.6 and a 3.1 Family Guy was Fox's biggest sucess with a 8.8 among all viewers and a 4.3 among younger viewers. It actually beat Desperate Housewives and Amazing race among 18-49 year olds!
Monday(I watch How I met Your Mother,The Event and for now Hawaii Five-O)
ABC
Dances with the Stars dominates the night.Hour 1 with 19.4 Million and hour 2 with 22 Million. However Hour 1 with 4 among 18-49 barely beats How I Met Your Mother and hour 2 with 5.2 barely beats 2 and and a Half men.Castle lead the last hour with a 13.5 among all viewers but second among 18-49 with 3.6.Castle will probably decline when Dancing with the stars ends.
CBS
How I met your Mother comes in 3 In it's timeslot with 8.9 among all viewers however It's 3.8 edges out House!Rules of Engagement holds most of How I met Your mother with 8.1 and 3.2.It loses 18-49 to second half of House. Two and a half Men Is CBS'S best Monday show with 13.8 and 4.8. They are glad Charlie Sheen came back.Unfortunately for us Mike and Molly Is holding 2 and a half men's audience for the most part with 11.2 and 3.7 Hawaii Five-O received 12.5 In total viewers and 3.8 among 18-49 yearolds. It lost to Castle among all viewers but barely beat them among 18-49. This may change when Dancing with the Stars ends
NBC
Chuck Is In position Heroes was In last season. It got 5.3 among all viewers but a 1.9 among 18-49.It did only slightly better than 90210 among younger viewers.Chuck Is In danger of not getting a back 9.The Event Is NBC'S best Monday show with 8.9 among total viewers and 2.9 among 18-49.The Event Is improving on Chuck's numbers.Chase Is having trouble holding onto some of The Event viewers but Is doing slightly better than Chuck with 6.5 among all viewers and 2.1 among 18-49 audience. It too Is In danger of not making It to full season.
Fox
House with 9.9 Is the best scripted show In first hour among all Viewers. It's 3.6 showing among 18-49 means How I met your mother had more 18-49 year olds watching It.Lone Star Is canceled So no need to go Into It's bad numbers
CW
90210 has 2.1 and 1.1.Gossip Girl has 1.7 and 1.90210 has already been renewed for next season but Gossip Girl fans have to be concerned about It being back next season.Despite all the promotion of both it can not reach what Smallville and Supernatural do with little promotion.
Tuesday(watch nothing till V returns)
ABC
No Ordinary Family had good premiere with 10.5 and 3.1 beating The Biggest Loser. However with American Idol returning In January they
should not get cocky.Dancing with the stars was the second big show of the night.Detroit 1-8-7 come Ins second In last hour with 9.3 and 2.3.It just barely lost younger audiences to the Good Wife. But like Castle Is Is being helped by Dancing with the Stars.
CBS
NCIS Is big winner of the night with 18 Million but loses 18-49 to glee.NCIS:LA had 16.5 Million In total viewers and 3.7 In younger audience. It
lost to Dancing with the Stars among all viewers but tied time In younger viewers.
NBC
The Biggest Loser Is Losing steam.First Hour finished fourth.Hour 2 tied with Raising hope among all viewers but lost the 18-49 to them. It was able to beat Running Wilde In both categories.Parenthood Is In trouble with 4.8 In total viewers and 2 among 18-49.Parenthood often won the 18-49 or come In second last year. This year It Is coming In third. It does less than Chuck does among viewers and only slightly better among 18-49
Fox
Glee Is Fox's success for the night. It come In second with 13 Million but beat NCIS among 18-49 5.8 to 4.Raising Hope and Running Wild are having trouble holding on to Glee's audience.
CW
One Tree Hill 1.8 and 0.9 and Life Unexpected 1.6 and 0.5.Total examples of the shape CW Is In.One tree Hill does do slightly better overall than Gossip Girl which Is about the only thing It has going for It.Both shows are doing terrible among 18-49 year olds
Wednesday(I watch Nothing)
ABC
The Middle comes In Second In total viewers after Survivor but third among 18-49 year olds.Better with You does slightly worse.Modern Family Is ABC's wednesday night success with second among total viewers with 11.9 but wins 18-49 with 4.5.Despite all the press Cougar Town continues to have trouble holding onto Modern Family's audience with 71 and 2.9.The Whole truth Is on Life support with 3 Million In total viewers and 1.1 among 18-49.
CBS
Survivors wins the first hour.Criminal Minds wins overall viewers In second hour but loses 18-49 year olds to Modern Family. The Defenders tied with Law and Order LA among all viewers but lost to them among 18-49(bad sign If you lose to law and Order among young viewers. This Is largely a older viewing show)
NBC
Undercovers has serious problems. It's 7 Million total viewers and 1.5 among 18-49.Chuck Is getting more younger viewers than It.Plus the more supposedly easy to follow Undercovers can't get the more serial The Event's numbers.Law and Order:SVU Improved on Undercovers with 8.7 among all Viewers and a 2.4(bad sign that law and Order SVU Is doing better than Undercovers among younger viewers. The Event Is doing better than SVU among younger viewers) and Law and Order LA Is now the highest rated law and Order show on TV with 10 Million total viewers and 3 among 18-49. It beats Undercovers and SVU among young viewers and the Monday night shows(although it just barely beats the Event among younger Viewers)

And there you have the first analysis of ratings.Next week we will be able to see how Smallville and Superatural hold up.

Welcome Chris!!...
ReplyDeleteWere the ratings for Supernatural like this last year?... It doesn't seem to be doing very well for a show that seems to have a cult following, me included!
Community is my favorite half hour comedy. The actors have great charisma together and I love all the digs at modern culture and even the show. I hope it pulls through.
ReplyDeleteI don't watch Chuck, but very much agree about Community.
ReplyDeleteMore people need to watch Fringe. I just don't understand why a show that is getting better and better in storyline is getting lower and lower ratings.
ReplyDeleteNot to be a pest but does anyone proof read these articles before they are written? There are punctuation errors and incomplete sentences in excess here. I realize this is run by ordinary people just like me but a little more pride in the work presented would make this seem a little more professional.
ReplyDelete"90210 has already been renewed for next season"
ReplyDeleteWhat? When?
Totally agree Marie, it's always nice to see this in words rather than
ReplyDeletecold numbers and tables.
We're hoping that Chris can make this a weekly column.
Great article, Chris, I hope you will do it every week :) Though I am sorry for CSIs numbers dropping.. but the analysis is an awesome idea, I will always be sure to read it, If you keep it going!
ReplyDeleteHere are The Cw's Sept 24-30 W18-34 Ratings
ReplyDeleteThe Vampire Diaries - 2.4
Gossip Girl - 2.1
America's Next Top Model - 2.1
90210 - 1.9
Hellcats - 1.8
One Tree Hill - 1.6
Supernatural - 1.3
Life Unexpected - 1.1
Nikita - 1.1
Smallville - 1.0
Average - 1.5
One Tree Hill looks like it is in The Danger Zone in it's Key Demographic W18-34 where Gossip Girl is doing amazing in it's key demographic and looks safe for renewal
Community and Fringe are my favourite shows now that Lost is gone and they're BOTH on the bubble. :/ I AM SO WORRIED IT IS SAD!!
ReplyDeleteJust remember that Smallville and Supernatural had their premieres last week. We won't really see how well they are doing comparatively until after we get the numbers for tonight's episodes. I also don't see them cancelling SPN for next year, but the year after that it is a goner because Jensen and Jared's contracts expire.
ReplyDeleteActually Nikita is doing well in The A18-49 which is what nikita targets too it does not Target towards W18-34 like The Cw's Dramas do which is where Gossip Girl is Doing really Well Nikita is on Par with The Average so will Likely be Renewed
ReplyDeleteIn analyzing the ratings I looked at the total viewers and 18-49 year old numbers released the day after that are posted here so you can see I don't make up numbers.
ReplyDeletealso Gossip Girl Fans have Nothing to Worry about a 2.1 W18-34 Demo which is the CW's Key Demographic for Gossip Girl is Very Strong and is tied for 2nd place with ANTM for 2nd place only being beat but TVD which got a 2.7 demo last week which means GG is 24% above The Network Average which is very good and The CW also averaged 2.47 million viewers for The Whole Week which is 13% above last season and averaged a 1.1 A18-49 Demo up 8% vs last season
ReplyDeleteanychance That you can Use The W18-34 Demographic for The CW Series as well as The A18-49 because that is The Cw's Key Demographic excluding Supernatural, Smallville and Nikita where they target A18-49 but Gossip Girl, One Tree Hill, 90210, Life Unexpected, Hellcats, America's Next Top Model, Vampire Diaries targets towards W 18-34 also is it possible to get this in Table form soritng by viewers and Demographics for each network as well as an Analysis?
ReplyDeleteI don't think that the CW will cancel SPN - Smallville is ending, LUX looks like a bust and OTH is probably ending too. They can't afford to cancel 4 shows. What would they air?
ReplyDeleteWith Nikita doing badly in demos, I could see it moving to Friday 8pm and being paired up with Supernatural.
Lol, sexists!
ReplyDeleteI take numbers that are reported the next day.Now DVR numbers may bring some shows up In total viewers and the 18-49 audence.
ReplyDeleteParenthood,Community and Undercovers all join Chuck In being In trouble.
The Whole Truth and My Generation are prime contenders to be canned.
Fringe for now Is doing well enough In total viewers but a move to Tuesday or Wedsday might help them survive.
Hellcats, and Nikita are losing a bit of their steam.Still both should make It to full season. And have chances for next season especilly with Smallville ending and Supernatural possibly joining Smallville.
Things will change once Dancing witht he Stars ends and will change again with American Idol returns.
Some reality shows are losing Some steam.Extreme Makeover,The Biggest Loser,America's Next top Model, and especilly The Apprence.
''America's next top Model Is losing steam with 2.7 In total viewers(Both season premieres of Smallville and Supernatural beat It) and 1.2 among 18-49(Smallville beat it among them. And Supernatural tied with them) Hellcats got 2.2 In total viewers and 1 among 18-49.It keep almost of America's Next top model audience.Hellcats did slightly better than 90210 among all Viewers although 18-49 year olds like 90210 and Slightly better."
ReplyDeleteFRIDAY FINALS
Smallville
- 2.980 million viewers
- 1.8/3 HH
- 1.3/5 A18-49
- 1.3/5 A18-34
- 1.0/4 W18-34
Supernatural
- 2.895 million viewers
- 1.7/3 HH
- 1.3/4 A18-49
- 1.4/5 A18-34
- 1.3/5 W18-34
WEDNESDAY FINALS
America’s Next Top Model
- 2.912 million viewers
- 1.9/3 HH
- 1.3/4 A18-49
- 1.4/5 A18-34
- 2.1/7 W18-34
ANTM matched both SV and SPN in A18-49 (check the finals both scored a 1.3)
Hellcats
- 2.218 million viewers
- 1.4/2 HH
- 0.9/3 A18-49
- 1.2/4 A18-34
- 1.8/5 W18-34
compared to MONDAY FINALS
90210
- 1.959 million viewers
- 1.3/2 HH
- 1.0/3 A18-49
- 1.3/4 A18-34
- 1.9/5 W18-34
Gossip Girl
- 1.784 million viewers
- 1.3/2 HH
- 1.0/2 A18-49
- 1.3/4 A18-34
- 2.1/5 W18-34
Hellcats is beating both shows in viewers, though it does seem to be shedding viewers from week to week but there isn't much between the three when it come to the all important demos. GG is just edging it with its consistent 1.0 and slightly higher W18-34 (the CW's most coveted demographic). OTH can also be included in the scrap between these shows for renewal. Though it has slipped in the female demo of late and has shed a good viewers it has managed to hld a 1.0 A18-49 and is arguably in the toughest time slot of the week (going up against GLEE whose W18-49 numbers are huge in comparison. My guess is the CW knew exactly what they were doing when they put OTH in this slot, it has a pretty loyal core fan base enough to at least not embarrass itself in the slot like 90210 did last season when up against AMERICAN IDOL (which has similar W18-49 numbers as GLEE). Not to mention the fact that this was likely the last season of OTH so ratings were of no real importance?
TUESDAY FINALS
One Tree Hill
- 1.832 million viewers
- 1.2/2 HH
- 1.0/3 A18-49
- 1.1/3 A18-34
- 1.6/5 W18-34
Life Unexpected
- 1.514 million viewers
- 1.0/1 HH
- 0.7/2 A18-49
- 0.8/2 A18-34
- 1.1/3 W18-34
LUX is definitely looking the most in danger of all the CW shows right now. It has the lowest viewer totals and the lowest A18-49 rating. It tied NIKITA in the W18-34 demo (only SV did worse but that doesn't really matter to the CW or to fans) however Nikita is at least pulling in viewers and has yet to dip below a 1.0 in the A18-49 demo. The issue with LUX is that it isn't hitting any of the demo's or pulling in the viewers. I wouldn't be surprised it LUX doesn't get its back 9 episode order and ends its run after its currently scheduled 13 episodes.
Though its too early to be talking about renewals for next season my educated guess based on the numbers so far this season is that TVD, GG, 90210, SPN and ANTM all get renewed. OTH gets a full and final 8th season, LUX gets 13 episodes and neither return next fall. In regards to Hellcats and Nikita I'm unsure as both seem to be falling week to week in the demo's and viewers. If I had to guess I'd say the CW will give both a full season this year and renew both for second seasons especially since they'll be loosing SV and/or OTH and LUX. Realistically the CW cant really afford to loose more than two shows, three t the most because it cant afford to pick up more than 2/3 new shows a season. So while CW shows are in decline on the whole the majority of the line up get renewed by default. Its either that or the CW shuts down for good.
Watch this space....
Community and Chuck are still making me worried.
ReplyDeletelol, women :P
ReplyDeleteand welcome Chris :)
This is great. I can never understand all the numbers and this makes things much clearer!
ReplyDeletethank you
Welcome to the site Chris, very good analysis.
ReplyDeleteLooking forward to how things change during the season.
more like we're just not nerds.... :)
ReplyDeleteI think it's doing about the same. At the very least not too much worse than last year and seeing as it's on Fridays this year, that's not too shabby. (please ignore the lameness of the words "not too shabby" xD)
ReplyDeletefyi, Chuck was bumped to a 2.0 in finals I believe.
ReplyDeleteI wish Fringe wasn't in such a tough time slot. Bad Fox!
ReplyDelete
