Deadline and The Live Feed have the news, announcing that Marvel and ABC are currently in very early stages of development of a live-action (most likely hour-long) series adaptation of the comic book character. The project is part of a push from Marvel to enter the TV realm, kicked off last summer with the launch of Marvel Television. Heroes exec producer Jeph Loeb is the head of the operation, and The Hulk was among two high priority projects they settled on.
This is good timing for ABC, whose sci-fi superhero drama No Ordinary Family premiered a couple of weeks ago to high ratings, but less so for Marvel, whose introduction of another Hulk could further diminish the established mythology of The Avengers universe. They’ve already suffered some setbacks with the recasting of Ruffalo and Don Cheadle (as War Machine), but those were unintended casualties. This, however, is a deliberate, calculated decision to produce a series based on one of their characters while an alternative big screen incarnation is simultaneously serving a separate franchise. The workaround for this would of course be to have Ruffalo reprise the role for the show, but that seems unlikely.

mmm, I sense fail, seriously, by today standards, people don't want to look cheesy superheroes, after The Dark Knight proved superheroes can be taken seriously. Also you can't paint a guy in green and say it's The Hulk, it would require great amounts of CGI and it should be a beast the size of Hulk in the 2008 film The Incredible Hulk, if not, people will not watch. I doubt ABC has the resources or intention to pull that off.
ReplyDeleteI'm not optimistic either. I'm still waiting to see how badly "The Cape" crashes and burns on NBC.
ReplyDeleteIf I were on Marvel TV, I would be looking to expand the fanbase for the already established universe. I would make a spin-off on Iron Man or Hulk or Thor feature films, with lesser known characters. This would act as promotion for the Avengers mothership and also a great opportunity for cameos by stars like Robert Downey Jr to boost ratings.
ReplyDeleteHulk is not the best choice for a superhero TV adaptation. Firstly, as said in the article, Hulk as already been established in The Avengers Universe and it would confuse and eventually turn audience off the new Hulk. Secondly, a huge amount of CGI and special effects work is required on Hulk if they want it to look the way it looked in the film. Due to TV budget, they have to either reduce the Hulk scenes a lot (which would make it a drama, not a sci-fi essentially) or make a cheaper Hulk effect (which would not help either, as people would not like it).
