Day 28:
And so Jack Shephard has seen off the very tough opposition of Fox Mulder, one of the hot favourites for the title following the Quarter Finals, and gives LOST a place in the 2010 Character Cup Final, going one better than the Best Show Cup, where it was defeated by Supernatural. The X-Files, another show to fall to Supernatural in the Best Show Cup once again falls just short of producing a winner.
And we can now turn our attention to the penultimate day of the competition. Our 64 characters are about to become 2. Let's save tears from tomorrow, and focus on the second Semi-Final, one which I'm sure many of you will agree will give people a good flavour of where this competition is headed. River Tam's biggest challenge yet, as she faces Clark Kent, a character who has been more hit and miss, grinding his way through ties with more difficulty than the Firefly favourite. Can the one remaining female left in the competition win, and pull off a great performance to reach this years final. That remains to be seen. Whoever wins, we have a mouth-watering tie in tomorrows final.

ReplyDeleteThis is definitely just my opinion but I'd probably skip the two-parter opener and go straight to Train Job. The two-parter is great but I found it was quite boring... until I'd gotten an appreciation for the show and characters.

I could not agree more! Summer Glau is a passable actress AT BEST and River Tam is my LEAST favorite character in firefly I think... with the possible exception of the blue hand men. I always felt like they had been diggin in blue toilet water and got grossed out. Eliza Dushku is maybe even less talented as an actress than Summer and I loved BTVS. O well, boys do not seem to vote on the charcter, just the actress. Either they do not know what a character is orjust do not care and are willing to bypass common sense for a "hot" girl. On the other hand Tom Welling is not much of an actor either. Atleast that character is fully developed and dynamic unlike River's one-note Aspberger's portrayal.
ReplyDeleteThe original pilot (2-hour episode/s) are a little slow moving, but they give a depth to the characters and make the later episodes more enjoyable in my eyes. Ther are some chronological anomalies that occur if you watch them out of order too, but they are minor and do not cause too much confusion. Plus I just hate the fact that FOX screwed with Joss and made him air the eps out of order so I prefer to watch them in the order the creator of the show intended.

See the video (most of it is from the movie Serenity). You do not want to be in the same bar when she's pissed. This fight scene is the best I have seen from any show or movie. The Matrix scenes come a close second. It's one thing to have a martial art skillset of awesomeness, but when you couple that with perfect psychic perception so that you know exactly when, how and from where the next blow is coming...? Like buttah. Rich, smooth, melting over mashed potatoes...buttah.

ReplyDeleteTwo of these polls rather belong to the characters who defeated the SPN boys (Fox Mulder and Elena Gilbert).
Castiel got only 3 335 votes against Mal Reynolds.
Sam got 6 394 votes against Elena Gilbert, which is very average.
Dean got 7 107 votes against Barney, but a good 8 653 votes against Veronica Mars. Still at least 3 characters have had more votes and River Tam should go past this score today.
The SPN boys performed globally well in this tournament but they were beaten regularly and they didn't deserve to go further at least not much than Fox or Elena or River for example.
What baffles me is that I just don't understand why the fuck Clark had 2500 votes less than his match versus Olivia. I mean, he wouldn't have won anyway, but why so many votes less?

If you compare an earlier snapshoot of the poll and the actual results, you see immediately that only one contestant increased (Demi Lovato, Grey's Anatomy) whereas all others (including Summer Glau) decreased.
So basically it's the Grey's against Summer Glau; it's not a surprise for me .
1) You have to remember that the name "Grey" stands for human traitors in league with Skynet.

ReplyDeleteI don't really follow all the comments, but I get the gist, and as so, the Final isn't happening until I speak with Dark about what has happened, and if there has been cheating, then unfortunately the competition will just be over as is.
I hope it isn't the case as I've put at least an hour a day into sorting out all the stuff, but if so, then so be it.

He even hacked the DISQUS system by creating a lot of accounts with a "no-password" mail like Yopmail, he made a comment be liked 105 times, and then he mentioned the awarding comments thing by Dark, how he would win with that comment.

I'm gutted. I come here because it feels like a safe, fun place to talk about my favorite shows. The good-natured banter and insightful opinions are what makes SpoilerTV such a great place to spend time and I would seriously like to cause physical harm to the person who would attempt to ruin this place for so many people. I would also like to do some name calling - but I won't stoop so low.

future polls/competitions to stop this cheating.
I've contacted Polldaddy Engineers to provide us with assistance on this
matter, We'll be looking at banning those responsible as much as we can.

It's always very sad when 1 or 2 people try to spoil it for the rest with
their selfish actions. It seems the Internet brings out the best and worst
in people.
I'm happy to say that 99.9% of all our readers and commentators are of the
best kind and this is one of the best online communities I've ever been
involved with.
Despite the cheating,this will not put me or Adam off and only make things
better going forward.

ReplyDeleteWell, I've said it before and I'll say it again, the amount of episodes -- for me -- doesn't really determine who is the better character. In fact, it's worked the opposite way with Jack, because the more episodes he was in, the more I disliked him.
ReplyDeleteI know how you feel about River as a character but it is subjective. I think she was a great character, and whether or not she didn't really come into her own until the movie, she DID come into her own. I happen to think she was more than a plot device and that there were so many metaphors there for being abused, rape, etc. Her character was quite heartbreaking, for me.
Saying that, I don't think she's the greatest character in the competition. I actually voted for Mal over her and would have voted for Dean Winchester over her, if he'd progressed and had the chance. But when she's pitted against characters like Jack, I have to use my own personal preference, and vote who I think was a better, more interesting, character. I can't vote more honestly than that.
Adam, still, we want to thank your time for the opportunity to discuss the great characters that were submitted. Although the competition was shamelessly cheated, the commenting fun wasn't ruined at all. We all know Dark's site is characterized by the good spirit and lack of "name-calling" :)
ReplyDeleteI did all this *nerdy* research to prove that these competitions are almost never that one-sided, not with shows that popular like Supernatural, Lost, Smallville, Fringe, Chuck, etc...

In my opinion, let the finale just be, just to finish it...lol maybe Jack wins. Just mention it's a "Consolation match" and nobody should complain :D
Urgh what a nightmare for you Adam. Who has the time to cheat on an internet poll. Now I am upset though because I have a great response for why people should not vote for River Tam. Just to find out not that many people were. Oh well. Thanks for the fun this contest has been. Thanks for the opportunity to talk about my shows. Thanks to all the commentors who have kept it classy. I'm beiing exposed, that means i can stop stuffing the ballot, have some sleep and go back to real life (i paid 1 032 $ = 750 euros for a subscription to a gym but had no time to go lately because of this tournament).
More seriously, the main reason for i have chosen to answer is because i wanted to make clear that nor Summer Glau nor the admins at the wiki are accomplice in ballot-stuffing (the admins probably knew what i was doing but didn't advocate it).
I'm a creepy Summer-stalker spammer and a lone-wolf.
Some members offered me to help but i always refused (partly because i work alone and partly because i was afraid they could be mole from another fanbase.
I have cancelled my membership to avoid them the shame of having a black sheep among their members.
Technically i didn't hack the poll, my votes respected the rule one IP-one vote. More, i may be responsible for ballot-stuffing the votes for some characters but i am not responsible for the poor 3 335 votes for Castiel for example.
I'm surprised there is not more name-calling because i can understand the disappointment of this site's readers (thanks logan for the previous "no need to insult" ).
My apologies to Adam and DarkUFO will be short because it's not easy and because i know i'm unforgivable. All i can do is to promise not to interfere with this site in the future.

This post is now pointless but I worked hard on it so here is what I would have posted in the Jack vs. River Tam round:
ReplyDeleteI can't believe it, but I am voting Jack again. Even though I do not like the Jack character, he is a well-developed character. The same cannot be said about River Tam. Let's talk numbers:
River Tam was in 14 episodes of Firefly. We could say 15 episodes since the first episode was 2 hours long. Of those episodes, River had 79 minutes and 52 seconds of screen time and that is counting generously. If you divide that by the 14 episodes, she averaged 343 seconds per episode of screen time, rounding up. That's a little less than 6 minutes of screen time per episode. That 6 minutes includes all the time she was asleep, standing against a wall, eating, being carried, staring at the sky, in the background with all the other cast members, and rocking back and forth crying. By my calculations, that is well over half the time she is on screen. So she spent less than 3 minutes an episode talking or doing anything at all.
River Tam was not a character so much as a plot device. She was used to give other characters things to do and talk about. The simple fact is that she did not have enough time to do or become anything. It was not until the movie (119 minutes) came out that she became a character. Like him or loathe him, Jack was definitely a character. He had several character arcs and his character changed throughout the 114 episodes he was in.
Everyone has the right to vote how they want of course. You can vote for Summer Glau because you think she's hot. You can vote for Cameron because you thought Summer Glau did a great job in Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles and she wasn't nominated for that role in this contest. You can vote for her because you are still ticked off that Firefly was cancelled. You can vote against Jack Sheppard because you hate him. But I have a hard time believing that anyone can vote for River Tam, the character in the Firefly TV show, because they think she was the greatest character. People threw a fit in the Best Show contest because the Vampire Diaries was in the finals and it had only been on for one season. This is much worse because River Tam wasn't even on for a full season and she had the least amount of screen time of all the characters.
I tried it and just found it middling. It certainly would not be appointment tv for me. It also did not make me a Summer Glau fan. What an annoying character!

ReplyDeleteI admit, I haven't watched it since Season 2. I actually bought the first two seasons on boxset but after watching it, I just couldn't do it anymore.
ReplyDeleteI've heard that the show's season premiers and finales are some of the best TV episodes but that in-between, it's a bit of a mess.
Maybe one day I'll go back and watch from when Lana left. She really just was like watching acid dry on my eyeballs.

Well it looks like it was just one crazy ****ing Summer Glau fan. As much as I love Firefly, it was mind boggling how River beat every other character by about 9000+ votes each round.
I'm sorry that it came to light right before the final showdown after you put this much effort into the cup. I hope you can get to the bottom of this, but it seems like logan_mac has all the proof you might need.
Whatever you decide to do, thanks a lot for spending your time for organizing this cup and the previous cup.

ReplyDeleteExactly what I think man, I wouldn't have cared if Clark had been defeated, if it was a fair competition that is. But seeing Clark loosing by 9000 votes made rage lol, also seeing great characters go like Castiel, Sam, Dean, Ben Linus, etc. seemed suspicious, though I never questioned anything because I didn't have any proof, it would have all just beeen a dumb conspiracy theory :D

While in the first 2-4 years I'd agree it was was more like that, but in the last 5 seasons or so, it's moved into complete comic (as in animated Superman, Spiderman, etc.) territory. I swear it's like watching a live action Superman show...complete with cheesy special effects and the Justice League.
