After the disappointments of yesterday, where a fan who thought they were better than everyone, and decided to cheat 'River Tam's' way to the final was found, Dark and myself have decided that the competition will continue if people want it too, we're not sure when yet as we want to ensure we can stop people ruining it for the others.
But I, Dark and everyone who has joined in has put a lot of time into the competition and to leave it unresolved would be disappointing. So once we find a program that is sufficient, or Dark's discussion with Polldaddy leads to added security, we have a three day plan, for those people who still wish to join in.
1)The following characters, from rounds we know were definitely corrupted, are entered into a quarter final tie. Those characters are Jack Bauer, Abby Sciuto, Spike and Malcolm Reynolds.
2)There is then a Semi-Final vs. Clark Kent.
3)There is then the Final vs. Jack Shephard.
I understand this is not perfect, but it is as fair as this version can be. This obviously means we have disqualified River Tam from the competition, and also we have decided it was one quarter of the draw that was cheated. I wish there was a better solution, but this is as fair an option as any.
It only disappoints me that a 'fun' competition finds someone who is so desperate for attention or too arrogant to see past his own character preferences, that this fun community has to suffer.
Regardless, I have had some great fun running both competitions, and next year we aim to improve and make it as fair as we can. I am not an administrator of this site, I'm just like you, who loves TV, and loves to discuss TV with other people. I have watched shows I hadn't before, I have found out things I hadn't before, and made good friends with people here.
Hopefully you will all come back when we can make the competition as fair as possible.

ReplyDeleteAgree. I also think that these people should be charged with criminal offenses. Isn't hacking illegal? I'm still trying to wrap my mind around the fact that there are some people (wonder who that could be) that can be THAT disconnected from reality. This dude doesn't have a gym membership. He is some fat 15 year old boy role playing as a hunk. Anyone hear that country song? Sing with me... o/`` "...so much cooler online..." o/``
ReplyDeleteI'll be here. Btw, must apologize for all my previous ranting. When I found out what was going on I read the past comments out of curiousity. Let's just say I'm still furious but am calming down now. I feel VERY sorry for Dark and Adam. A lot of hard work, destroyed by some child. That same child could seriously use a real life.
ReplyDeleteI'm not sure which is more sad, that some one had such an emotional attachment to a TV character or actress that they felt the need to cheat an entertainment poll or that their need for appreciation, admiration or simple recognition led them to brag about it online and get caught. If they had just cheated the poll and never mentioned it online they would have never been exposed. I am glad the character battle royal is going to continue and hope it is light-hearted fun for everyone that wants to participate.

I`m happy that you two do not be discouraged by such poor behaviour!!!
That said, I want to thank you both, Adam and DarkUFO, for all your work and effort you put into those polls and this great site ;) I found my way to this site a few month ago and I check back here every day since then ! So thank you.
wow some ppl have way to much time on there hand to cheat on a poll meant for FUN. would def like to see the who would win!
ReplyDeleteI still think Jack would've beat River.. hah no just kidding but i was beginning to think something was fishy because I started watching Firefly on Netflix a little over a week ago, now I'm finished.
ReplyDeleteAnd when River destroyed the others I figured oh ok I guess different shows have different fans whatever but then she faced Malcolm and I knew something was wrong.
There is no way that she would have more fans than Malcolm!
She does nearly nothing in the first half of the show, she says weird things in the third quarter, she shoots 3 people with her eyes closed in one but no big deal, and the rest is fairly average. She does beat up a crapload of people in Serenity but still.
Overall I think shes a pretty cool character with a couple of strange lines that earn a chuckle or two but theres just no way in the universe that she's better than Mal. Mal almost challenges Jack as my favorite tv character of all time...ALMOST
As for the competition it is disappointing, I would love to see it continue though and hope for a fair game next time.
By all means yes! We need to continue the contest. And yes, my favorites are still out.
ReplyDeleteI am so glad that you have not let this one jerk discourage you. The rest of us who play fair are really enjoying it. Thanks for all your effort Adam and Dark. I came in the summer when I read about the Best Show contest and in just one month this site became my to-go-to site for TV. I enjoy the comments and all the great people who are on this site. Don't let the jerks stop you because you've got a lot of fans here, myself included.
Logan, you rock too by the way. That was some good investigative journalism there. I appreciate you bringing this cheating to our attention so at least I know I wasn't completely nuts when I made my bracket. (Still going to lose badly, but now I can say it's because people cheated their way through.) I was beginning to think I knew nothing about SpoilerTV viewers.

Glad you're enjoying the competition. Despite the cheats, I'm pretty sure
99% of people here have still enjoyed it. You only need to look at the
number of comments generated for each poll to see that people love to
discuss their favourite TV Shows and Characters.
I really hope this competition does continue. I actually discovered this site because a friend suggested I come vote when it was Moulder vs. Winchester. Needless to say I've stuck around for more than just the competition.
ReplyDeleteAh, I knew Jack Bauer couldn't have possibly lost against River in the first round. There were way too many votes, it was kind of suspicious. A Jack Bauer/Jack Shephard final would be great indeed.
ReplyDeleteAlhtough it's sad that someone decided to corrupt the competition and forcing re-matches, I'm greatly pleased to see Spike and Mal back in the competition since those two are somewhere in the top on my personal favorite character list. :)

How do you know which or how many votes were cheating? Doesn't polldaddy filter duplicate votes?

ReplyDeleteWhile I may get a little irked about the outcomes from time to time, as long as it's on the up-and-up and people are only given one vote it's still fun for me.
For the life of me, I don't understand why someone would intentionally corrupt a competition that is solely for fun and offers no benefits for winning. There's nothing to be gained by this.
I hope there's a way to jackass-proof these competitions because a lot of visitors here seem to really enjoy them.
A big THANK YOU to all of the hard work by Adam D. Harris and DarkUFO. I hope this extremely dickish behavior doesn't discourage either of you from pursuing these types of activities in the future.
We should continue this competition to The End. It's our destiny! ;)

ReplyDeleteWhat i found funny is that the 'fanofsummerglau' replies were in my email spam folder, whereas everyone else but one other persons weren't!! No word of a lie!

ReplyDeleteThank you so much for all your work with this competition and the last one, as well. Especially since that work has also involved a lot more than finding nice youtube vids and updating the brackets. :)
I think the competition should continue simply because it has brought a lot of good activity to the site. Despite the cheating and a few heated exchanges both the Best Show and the Character Competition have resulted in many well thought out and thought provoking commentaries and debates. I know I'm not the only one, who has decided to give a shot to a show I never considered before, simply because a complete stranger argued really well for it.
I think the way you suggest moving forward sounds completely fair, and I say that with all of my faves way out of the running. ;)
I'm all for it. I'm just glad this disillusionment didn't completely kill the incentive of the competition in the first place! "If you give in, the hackers win!"

ReplyDeleteAs mentioned I'm in discussion with PollDaddy about how we can stop these people from ruining it for others in the future.
No poll system is ever going to be 100% perfect but we need to stop the sad individuals who set up multiple pcs' running multiple scripts through multiple proxy servers.
I guess these people are just sad with little to no life of their own.
Well, not later than yesterday I've expressed some concerns about how the results of the round was somehow very weird (with also referrals to other previous rounds), and now I'm not really surprise to see that some really sad person DID in fact ruin the whole thing with some shitty hack move.

Also, not to sound racist against Firefly fans or something, but I would pay really good attention to what might happen with Malcolm Reynolds in the Day 1.

I must say, I did think there was something 'odd' going on, when River Tam annhilated everyone who came up against her. Glad to see Jack Bauer back in. Im rooting for an all Jack final (:

ReplyDeleteWell I don't know if that particular poll was arranged, I think Fox Mulder has a lot of fans too, after all The X-Files is a cult show, think of Lost in 10 years, but it's suspicious in my opinion because this site is heavily "biased" towards Supernatural (I don't know why but recently it has received a lot of fans of this show), and it would be weird for an old show to beat a currently airing show, that this site posts information of daily. Still, this is just my opinion, I don't have proof for that.
ReplyDeleteOne thing I know though, is that FanOfSummerGlau explicitly mentioned that Supernatural was a show to beat and he cheated the Castiel poll because of that.
Also, why can't you reply to my posts? If you do so I would have seen your comment a lot faster...
And if you're crazy with internet harassing and that stuff, there's no need to put a picture of yourself, just make like me, a cheaply photoshopped logo of your name, or whatever haha :)

ReplyDeleteKeep the competition going! But as a proper and fair way I think we should have multiple head-to-head polls instead of one big poll to determine who will face Jack Shephard. What I mean is that we would treat it as if Jack Bauer beat River Tam in the first round, as he rightfully should have, and then we would move through that part of the bracket. So the next match would be:

Then the winner vs. Clark Kent
And then finally the winner vs. Jack Shephard for the DarkUFO crown!

I always knew that there's something wrong in some polls in this competition, mostly because even when I know this is not a best show competition, the show have something to do with people choice and Firefly in past competition don't get all the support that their both characters have in this competition but I shut my mouth because then people start to say that we're angry because all SPN lost
I read your reply in the other article, and I like to reply here about your comment, I know that is important to have some profile in your account but I don't like to used or put a picture because I'm paranoic and like criminology student for me is risk to put too many information about me, but the admis can check my comments and the IP where I post and they can realize that I'm not crazy that the guy who cheat in this competition. Now I remember that in Mulder/Dean poll, a guy with the nick Manuel25 post comments against Dean in a bad way, I remember him very clear because he post like an X-File fan and I really get angry because Mulder is one of my fav characters and with his comments I choose Dean over Mulder (because was a hard decision)
Well at least this was discovered, thanks to you but is a shame, a nice and funny competition with this things mostly with all people who works hard in this.... At the end, whoever who win this competition for me it's not the best character at all because who knows which characters could win if the polls have not been hacking
River Tam got like 10.000 votes against Clark Kent, and I discovered a site where he was organizing hacking the poll, then we realized every poll Summer Glau was included was cheated, and some other polls that could benefit Summer Glau (Castiel and Dean loosing for instance) too.

ReplyDeleteLol. I think SpoilerTV has gotten a lot more Supernatural fans lately because we saw links to this site on a lot of popular Supernatural sites during the Best show competition. Supernatural fans are really passionate so that's all it takes for us to answer the rallying cry. Once we got here for the contest and realized that for the most part you can make comments here without getting bashed, it became a safe haven of sorts. The word of mouth spread from there.

ReplyDeleteAbout the topic, I'm not angry because Dean lose against Mulder, because honestly the X-Files for me is one of the best show's in all tv story, but recently Supernatural have the same effect that X-Files provoked in me lot of years ago, Supernatural is a awesome show, is an original idea, refresh it and fans tend to defend this show because is unjust that SPN don't get the place that deserves that's why fans are very passionate and when someone post the link about the Show competition in a fan site, the support for the show increase in this site
I really don't understand why in US don't get to many audience because in Latin America and Spain, is an important show, in WB La for example, is the best show that they have, because even when in Latin America there's to many countries and obviously the audience increase more, in every particular country we got our own tv show's, so an international TV show with 10 million of viewers is a cult.
Anyway, at least we're not so crazy fans that some fans for River Tam jajaja, if this competition still going, I have to support now to Abby Sciuto and Spike, for me they are the best characters that still alive here...
and if i sound a little bitter and overdramatic guys... its cuz its 2am i just spent about 10hours doing maths *yuck* not in the greatest mood unfortunately

ReplyDeleteso i only check the 2010 character cup tag for new polls and didn't have time to read comments and such (THE MEGA DETERMINES-MY-ENTIRE-FUTURE EXAMS ARE ON IN AUSTRALIA) and after a veryvery long delay, finally decide to read this update and.... OMG, people call SPN fans crazy =.="
at least we have a life other than sit there and Zomg-Vote-Summer-Glau-And-Kick-Out-Any-Character-That-Might-Threaten-Her-Grand-Victory!!!!

i feel so... cheated, i guess. its like as though i made this new friend and had heaps of memories of great times with them, then found out it was a robot. the memories were still awesome but it was all a lie. how disappointing.
on a happier note, these competitions were the thing that made me start commenting and joining conversations and debates. i tried to use minimal cheesiness here, but these polls have really made me feel part of the SpoilerTV community <3 (ngawww)
