So many of the things that were wrong with How I Met Your Mother last year were addressed in 'Big Days'. For starters, we're given a strong development on the mother-meeting front. After cleverly leading us into believing we were seeing the second of the 'Big Days', we instead find out Ted is giving a speech as the best man at another couple's wedding. We also find out that this is the day Ted meets his future wife. This is interesting for two reasons. The first is that the writers clearly have made nice on their promise to be more story-arc focused this year, even though I understand their reasons for wanting to do more syndication friendly stories in Season 5. We're no longer floating about in HIMYM-limbo, there's a point in time that the audience, the writers, and the characters are heading towards. I'm someone who sits in the 'Lost was better once the end date was set' camp, so I'm all for this. Having said that, we don't really know when this wedding is taking place - it could be the Season 10 finale for all we know.
The second reason is that, unlike the ambiguous umbrella clue that could have turned up at any moment, we now know that Ted definitively meets the mother at the wedding. Unless a significant number of episodes of this show take place at weddings (and I hope to God they don't), as soon as we see someone annouce their engagement, we'll know it's not long away. Unlike the umbrella, we'll be able to see the end in sight (not that I think the show will end with Ted meeting the mother, but you know what I mean).
And is it safe to say we can guess the identity of the bride and groom? This show likes to tease us a lot, but considering all the hints of Barney's old spark for Robin returning, would a Stinson-Scherbatzky wedding be on the cards?
Honestly, I don't mind. If they get together, great. If they stay friends, also great. What I absolutely don't want is this to become a Sam/Diane thing, or even a Ted/Robin thing. The writers made a massive mistake letting Barney and Robin as a couple disappear before it really had a chance to make an impact, and if this is their way of saying, 'Ooh, maybe we should try this again', then I hope they know what they're doing.
'Big Days' was also plenty funny in it's own right, another step up from a lot of last season's offerings. My favourite gag of the episode was Barney's slow motion photo-taking of Cindy and her girlfriend as they kissed. Crude but funny. Marshall and Lily's B-story about Marshall's Dad being far too involved in their conception process provided a lot of laughs too, in a scenario I can imagine many parents-to-be finding themselves in. Marshall demanding silence while he weighed up talking to his Dad or missing out on sex made me laugh. Angry Marshall is always funny, as played by Jason Segel.
The Lily and Marshall storyline also gave me the other big step up from last season, which was that it brought a little bit of the heart back to the show. By far my favourite episode of last season was 'Of Course', where we found out how rough Robin was really taking her break up with Barney. Here, we get a really sweet scene where Lily explains to Marshall why she doesn't want people to be involved until she actually has a baby to talk about. Segel and Alyson Hannigan have got this relationship so down at this point.Marshall's response to Lily's concerns were so well written and acted, and gosh darn it, if Alyson Hannigan isn't the actress most capable of making me cry with just a sad face.
And briefly, it was a nice return for Rachel Bilson as non-'The Mother' Cindy. I'm always fond of when this show shows us how the characters we're not likely to see again have got their happy ending, and it was no different here.
A return to form for a brilliant show that had a poor season we'll be referring to in a years time as a 'hiccup'. Hopefully.
Great, great episode.
What did everybody else think?

Actually, I just watched the end of "The Playbook" episode and Old Ted said: "That was the day when she met Don", so there was no "uncle".
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure it was that episode I mentioned in my edit:
ReplyDeleteAt the end, Ted mentions that he and Marshall were right about their teasing (when they kept claiming Robin throwing herself into work and ignoring men wouldn't matter because it's when people do that that they end up meeting the loves of their lives), because it was that exact day that she met Don, which is when I think he said the "uncle" comment, too.
About Robin and Don:
ReplyDeleteIt's quite certain that they are gonna marry sooner or later because in one Episode (will add the episode number when I remember which one it was) Future Ted told his Kids that the guy Robin met was their uncle Don
Nah, it wasn't.
ReplyDeleteI think this episode could be a bit better (2x01 was the best premiere of all!), but in the end, it is more than OK. It was really great and I loved it. Can't wait to see the next episode!
BTW: Great review, are you gonna write another one for 6x02? If so, I'm gonna check it out! :)
Old Ted (Bob Saget) said that Ted (Josh Radnor) met mother at this particular wedding (the one, where he scratches bottle).
ReplyDeleteAnd you missed the point - Marshall said something like: "Dude, it's just a toast, why are you so nervous" and then Lily called: "Best Man blablabla" and Ted went on this wedding with Marshall.
I think it was Virginia's wedding (the one we saw in 5x20 - Home Wreckers) Old Ted said there something like: "For all I knew, I ended up dancing with my future wife there" or it could be Barneys and Robin wedding. Well, we still have at least 19 episodes, so we can only guess, but we have no idea, what Producers' thoughts are.
Thanks for the recap, great stuff.
ReplyDeleteCheers Robert, and yeah, I'll be doing the whole season, as well as all the other shows I watch. And that's a LOT.

ReplyDeleteWhere did they say the wedding wasn't Ted's?
ReplyDeleteAs far as I knew when I watched the show, he was nervous about his prospective bride (pulling at the label), and then went to get married.
Except then he met the woman who he later DID wind up marrying; I'm not guessing whether he went ahead with the original wedding or immediately called it off when he realised even a complete stranger (who nonetheless ended up being the Mother) was less tense than being with his fiance, but I personally think the latter could turn the audience against Ted.
The former would be a great final season: Ted's actually married to this wrong woman and has to come up with a way to break up with her and get with the right one right at the end of the show. If the Mother is in every last season ep, slowly gelling with Ted, that'd also give her plenty of time to end the show on a high with fans rather than a "Huh?"
I didn't love it that much. It was okay, I guess, but nothing really special. Season 5 was really bad, but most of its episodes were kinda better than this premiere.
ReplyDeleteGreat review! I agree with all your points, and I too hope that it's a Barney-Robin wedding (as you say, it can be years from now).
ReplyDeleteAnd also -- I laughed more at this episode alone, that at any episode last season. That counts too.
I agree, this episode really returned to form. That whole dibs thing was killer. My only disagreement with you is, while I agree this could have been a Stinson/Sherbatsky wedding I really hope not. It just seems wrong to me when Barney is in a solid relationship. He's the eternal player to me.
