2010 Character Competition - Round 2.6 - Day 14

24 Sept 2010

I wrote the paragraph below when I went to bed, so for Fringe fans, unfortunately & for Smallville fans, brilliantly, Lois Lane pulled off a remarkable turnaround and beat Peter Bishop, so hats off to the fans, who now find themselves with a Clark vs. Lois Round 3. Personally as a Fringe fan, and viewing the competition as a neutral, I would've found Clark vs. Peter the most interesting Round 3 match, as I can't help but feel that Clark should definetely have an edge over his co-star. But more intruiging things have happened. :P I've left the paragraph below in as I'd mentioned a few other bits and bobs, so read at your pleasure :)

(It was a relatively quiet start to the second half of the draw in the second round of the competition yesterday, one which saw success for one Smallville character (Clark Kent) yet elimination for the other (Lois Lane). A very strong performance from Peter Bishop, perhaps exceeded his expected potential has scored him a place in Round 3 against Clark, and he surely now has a chance to take on the Man of Steel. It all remains to be seen. One ting is certain and that all the hopes for any NCIS success like it found in the show competition (it finished in 9th place) lie in the hands of Abby Sciuto. One thing I noticed is that one of the best show Semi-Finalist's and Quarter Finalists, The Wire & The Office had no characters in the to 64. Surely McNulty or Michael Scott merit a place in the draw. Perhaps next year we will lower the number of characters from each show to allow other shows the chance to fight for the win. But that's for another time, just a pause for thought :P)

Today we have 'Chuck', who pulled off a great victory against Greg House in Round One, certainly upsetting many peoples expectations, and as a result threw himself into contention for a strong performance today against '30 Rock's' Liz Lemon, who similarly made light work of Allison Cameron in Round One. Also we have the show that always pulls itself from underdog to front runner, 'The Vampire Diaries' Damon Salvatore, (Boone to everyone else :P) taking on 'Fringe' lead character Olivia Dunham. As a Fringe fan I'm behind the Dunham, but it will be tough to see off such stiff opposition. Can Vampire Diaries push on from Elena's win over Sam, the turnaround in Vampire vs. Demon fortunes from the Best Show final, and go one step further in this competition. Still a long way to go, and I'm sure Olivia won't make it easy. It's time to find out.....

Also keep upto date with the competition and/or ask questions by following me on twitter. I'll also post some of my reviews, writing updates & other bits & bobs, more often than not TV and Film based. I'm at: http://twitter.com/AdDHarris

  1. Sammy lost :(

Okay, one goes for Chuck and one for Damon Salvatore! mehehe.

  2. Vampire Diaries fans seem even more diehard than Twilight fans!

I hate vampires and the whole vampire fad that's started (F**k you Stephanie Meyer). I'm glad Dean & Sam will hunt them in one episode this season. The only awesome vampire movie is The Lost Boys.

Oh and my votes are Chuck & Olivia.

  3. I voted for Liz and Olivia. This was a much easier round, today. Of course, I don't expect either of those picks to win as they will easily be pulped by a vicious fanboy/girl beatdown. This one won't be pretty folks.

  4. vampire diaries is a lot different than twilight, i hate twilight but tvd is my favorite show. and vampire diaries also came out first. so you should give it a chance and not bash the whole show altogether..

  5. Voted for the ladies: Liz and Liv!

  6. I'm not bashing the show, by "diehard" I just meant that it has a strong fan base for a new show, possibly helped by Twilight fans. I'm bashing the entire vampire craze that's been happening.

By the way, Twilight came out in 2008 and TVD started in 2009, so TVD didn't come out first. I'll give the show a shot though and watch the first season

  7. Liz and Olivia but only because I have never seen Chuck and I like Tina Fey. I'm not a huge fan of Damon although he was better in the last couple of episodes in season 1 and Olivia is my least favorite main character on Fringe. Still, Olivia's character is deeper than Damon's, whose main job is to be the ham in the Stephan-Elena cheese sandwich.

  8. Boone was a much better character, even if Ian Sommerhalder is getting more recognition for Damon.

    ReplyDelete
  9. I don't even want to look. Two of my final four (House and Locke) didn't make it past round 1. Only 3 of my final eight are still in. In my sweet sixteen, only 6 even have a shot.

  10. Damon is a redeemer of the VD to keep it from being too soapy, but Olivia Dunham is just aweeesssomeee.

(Supposedly, Ausiello says Torv's performance in TONIGHT'S premiere is simply emmy-deserving)
So we'll see how far she's come as a character :)

  11. The general consensus is that the books weren't that great, but the show is taking in a different better direction.

I am probably always going to disagree on this one Dahne, but I think for a teenage soap vampire drama, the show is pretty good. (Once again the violence of the show really helps lol)
Oh and yes, Twilight is the worst thing to happen to our culture in the last 30 years.

  12. Boone was a bitch. :/
I still liked him because Somerhalder portrayed him well, but Boone and his sister were like nails on a chalkboard for me. Seeing Damon rip people's necks and throw some witty little one liners is my preference.

  13. Chuck... but still can't decide between Olivia and Damon!

    ReplyDelete
  14. You're bashing an entire craze? Well isn't that ignorant. Might miss out on some awesome things.

    ReplyDelete
  15. Olivia kicks ass. Come on Fringe fans, don't lose this one too.

    Also voted for Liz Lemon.

    ReplyDelete
  16. She's not my favourite character on Fringe... but apparently the season three premiere makes her character awesome.

    ReplyDelete
  17. Go Chuck! That being said, I have no chance on this one in the end, so I don't know why I'm still excited. I'm one of the many who's Locke being eliminated killed me. I also somehow managed to pick Mulder making it to the end...so here's hoping for that (unlikely) situation.

    ReplyDelete
  18. My bracket screams Damon, but my heart wishes for Olivia... oh, why did I start watching Fringe only AFTER I put in my bracket!!!

    ReplyDelete
  19. Whoa! Olivia's winning at the moment... that's a big surprise. I voted for Damon, having only seen 2 episodes of Fringe, but I'm actually happy to see this. I was so disappointed that Peter lost, so I wouldn't mind Olivia winning.

    ReplyDelete
  20. There's something fishy going on here. Seriously. I voted for Olivia earlier today and I just stopped by to check the results a little less than 30 minutes ago and Olivia was way behind. She only had between 3 and 4 hundred votes. I think there's some shenanigans goin' on.

    ReplyDelete
  21. >< That analogy was hilarious but disturbing. I can no longer eat ham and cheese sandwiches.

Considering how much mayo I put on my sandwiches, this might be a good thing.

    ReplyDelete
  22. Let me guess... it's a conspiracy.

    ReplyDelete
  23. It's more likely that someone in the last hour posted the poll on some Fringe fan sites. I'm not a "grassy knoll" guy.

    ReplyDelete
  24. I read the books when I was in high school. Perhaps that is the big difference.

I have to disagree about the last point too. I think low-riding pants were the worst culture fad in years. Twilight I can sometimes avoid (and I work in a middle school) but those pants gave me eye trauma every time I walked into a mall.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Glad I'm not the only one who didn't want my bracket to work out. Unfortunately, it's the wrong part of the bracket that is not working out for me.

    ReplyDelete
  26. With people watching the premiere, my bet is a lot of people are going on to talk about it. If there are notices about this poll, that could account for it too. Still, I don't have a lot of hope for the trend to continue. There's still 15 hours to go.

    ReplyDelete
  27. Anyone else concerned that both Damon and Olivia look like they stuck their hand in a light socket. Or maybe got trapped near a wind tunnel.

    ReplyDelete
  28. regardless of how awesome damon is, he will always be boone to me
but thats why i love him
    vote damon everyone!!!

    ReplyDelete
  29. They're just shocked Elena Gilbert beat Sam Winchester.

    ReplyDelete
  30. Love it! Absolutely love it!

    ReplyDelete
  31. I voted Liz. She is soooo funny, and I love 30 Rock...and I haven't seen Chuck soooo........ anyways. I didn't vote on the second option because I haven't watched either one of the shows....wow, it seems as though I don't watch the majority of the shows that the characters in this competition belong to. Well, I wonder what keeps driving me to this site everyday to vote. That's something to ponder. Lol :]

    ReplyDelete
  32. I had House Vs. Locke. :P I'm totally relying on Jack vs. Dean in the other Semi, or else I'm screwed :P

    ReplyDelete
  33. I have to say, I've watched two episodes so far (of supernatural) and I prefer Sam :O haha

    ReplyDelete
  34. So bad, Liz Lemon is awesome character, but at least Olivia is winning, she is brilliant, is a great character too

    ReplyDelete
  35. Holy crap! Where did the Fringe fans come from? xD I thought Damon was a shoo-in for this. Oh well, Damon (as great a character as he is) was one of the main threats to Dean possibly winning. Although, now he might have to go up against Olivia.

    ReplyDelete
  36. Remember Fringe aired last night so there was a lot of "fringe
traffic". Also it got posted on a couple of Fringe websites.

    ReplyDelete
  37. Those are the four I had in the final four too. I was so confident going in. Now I realize I don't have a clue what people watch and vote for.

    ReplyDelete
  38. How can Olivia be winning over Damon? How??

    ReplyDelete
  39. I hate Twilight, never read books nor watched movies. I was very doubtful about TVD at the beginning (even waited a few months until I gave it a try out of boredom) but it has proven as a quality series. And that's what matters to me most. Though the vampire topics do seem to be worn out especially lately, mostly because of Twilight. That's bad because then series like TVD end up having a bad repute. Also if I look at the common lore about vampires from mythology, Meyer is making up things on top of already established made up characteristics while TVD is using the same base like Anne Rice and the beginner of everything - Bram Stoker did.

    ReplyDelete
  40. I hope not, because after see Olivia in past season, people have to be crazy to not choose her, she did a great show, is nice that she is winning

    ReplyDelete
  41. I'm also glad Dean ans Sammy are going to hunt vampires, again!
I really like some Vampire Movies...
But I DON'T like TVD or the twilight movies...

    ReplyDelete
  42. You know what's worse than loose pants? TIGHTASS skinny jeans.

    ReplyDelete
  43. Yep, all bets are normally off with SPN polls :)

    ReplyDelete
  44. Yeah, Dean ended up as the hero and Sam was seen mostly through the season as a junkie who couldn't be trusted. However, Sam's final acts in the last 5 episodes realllllyyyy turned that around, and for Dean to fall in line with him and trust his brother who had only just recently stabbed him in the back (the whole Ruby thing) just said VOLUMES about both characters and I find they are back on the same level for me.

    ReplyDelete
  45. WRONG-O! (Thankfully!) :)
I love the understated brilliance of Olivia. Sometimes it takes some time for me to love certain things about her, but once I understand, the love, oh how it flows. :)

The bathroom scene from last night, and the "oh, Frank?" slip of the memory really got to me.
    .... "She's our Olivia now."
    CHILLING. lol

    ReplyDelete
  46. Sometimes I think the word-spreading of the Supernatural characters works against them. Just a personal theory. For a show it's size, it perhaps has a bigger chance of spreading the word to fans of the other show. Maybe I'm wrong, but Elena soared against Sam, Damon fizzled against Olivia :P

    ReplyDelete
  47. they were originally books, written before twilight. and sorry, i misread your comment wrong and took it as bashing.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Completely happy to be wrong!

    ReplyDelete
  49. same here, definitely thought Damon easily had won this one when I voted.

    ReplyDelete
  50. Here I thought you were saying you liked Sam over Elena. I take back my "like" :-P

I became hooked on Dean Winchester in the third episode of the first season. Watching Dean interact with Lucas instantly made him my favorite character of all shows I was watching. I haven't changed my mind yet, which is surprising because I am usually fickle. 3 years and I move on. I love how he would bend down to Lucas's level to talk to him and how he could empathize with what Lucas was going through. I loved how Lucas turned to Dean when he knew something was wrong because he instinctively trusted him and the clip where Dean rescues Lucas from the water is one of my all-time favorite Supernatural moments. I love a character that is great with kids.

    ReplyDelete
  51. How do you know you hate Twilight if you never read the books or saw the movies?

    ReplyDelete
  52. Surprising how Damon was only able to muster 4,822 votes in his loss to Olivia, yet Elena was able to obtain 8,986 votes in her win against Sam. Truly paranormal.

...and BSE 2010 is coming to bite us in the butt, lol. ><

    ReplyDelete
  53. Ok this is gonna be unpopular but:

I vote for Liz over Chuck because she is hillariously arkward and i have great fun watching her xx

(ok here come the knives) Damon hams the screen up when he's on and Olivia doesn't and Fringe is better than the Vampire Diaries. I choose Olivia xx

    ReplyDelete
  54. I've updated the Brackets.

  55. The Vampire Diaries books came out in the 80's. They were good. I saw the first season of the tv show. It was not.

    ReplyDelete
  56. Yep, my final 4 were

    House vs Locke
    Ben vs Jack

With a Jack vs Locke final.

    Ouch...

    ReplyDelete
  57. When I first started, I felt the same way... Sam is much more of a lovable character for the first two seasons, and then Dean really takes off. By Season 4, both characters are at their peak and they are both incredible works of art. Season 5 kind of puts Dean ahead though, so it is normal that fans have him left in their minds right now.

    ReplyDelete
  58. Because Olivia is a complete mature character while Damon comes off as a caricature until the last couple of episodes in season 1. Don't worry. It won't last. Damon will win in the end.

    ReplyDelete
  59. I think the premiere might've had something to do with it, but remember VD was on last night too--just right before Fringe. IDK what to think, Elena got SO many votes but Damon is the one I would expect to be the vote-getter in this competition...Then again, that was in a SPN poll which seem to be the exception to the rule...

    ReplyDelete
  60. Remember, Vampire Diaries aired last night too... :/ Even if it wasn't the premiere.

    ReplyDelete
  61. Yep, I think that was the difference. Fringe traffic spiked a lot last
night TVD has been on for a few weeks now
