Supernatural - Fredric Lehne Returns as Azazel

11 Jul 2010

Thanks to TVMonkey for the heads up.

We thought we'd seen the last of him, but he's back!

At this weekend's Creation Entertainment Salute to "Supernatural" convention in Parsippany, N.J., Fredric Lehne himself affirms that he will return as the series' original baddie, the Yellow Eyed Demon - also known as Azazel. Zap2it is still awaiting studio confirmation, but for now, we'll take Lehne's word for it.

Lehne says he'll start work on Wednesday, July 14, while the cast and crew is working on the season premiere. Though he has had the most screen time as Azazel, the demon has also been portrayed by Jeffrey Dean Morgan, Rob Labelle, Mitch Pileggi, and very briefly by Lindsey McKeon.

Warner Bros. has confirmed that Mitch Pileggi will also return to the show -- though whether he'll appear as Azazel or Samuel Campbell, Sam and Dean's grandfather, we don't know.

The demon was killed by Dean in the Season 2 finale, so we're guessing he's returning for a flashback or a time-travel episode. Either that, or Azazel's back from the dead... which isn't exactly a rare occurrence on "Supernatural." It happens just about every Thursday, give or take.

Sera Gamble, who has taken over for Eric Kripke as showrunner for the series' sixth season, has mentioned that this year "Supernatural" will return to a format that closely resembles its first season, so it seems appropriate to bring back the first season's biggest villain.

  1. Wow...this is shaping up to be a rather interesting season.

  2. I hope season 6 isn't just a sightseeing tour of the previous 5 seasons. All the info coming out about the show so far is very "past-heavy." If this show is going to be successful beyond its original 5 season arc, it needs to keep moving forward.

  3. It all about learning Christian's backstory. Since Christian's father was Mary's sister, where was he in 1973? How did Christian survived when all his family was killed by Azazel? Having Azazel and grandpa coming back only mean we'll know what happened to mary's bro

  4. I'm really hoping we'll se Azazel in a flashback scene, because I don't think I can stand any more resurrections. Demons especially. Can you even bring back a dead (by the Colt) demon?

  5. totally agree with you. No more ressurections please of any kind. I think Azazel will be appearing in a flashback scenario in the season premier, theres been no indication that he'll be doing any more episodes so far. As others have suggested the writers are most likely to be using the YED to explore Christian's back story. If thats how it plays out I can live with it.

I have to agree with the other season 6 skeptics on this one, as much as I've loved some of the characters we've been told might be coming back, season 6 isnt sounding all that promising at the moment. It sounds quite alot like season 5. The only thing I am actually interested in is Christian Campbell, though I'm not sure I really care about the Campbell family history. The mythology arc, where it may have mattered is over (or so we've been lead to believe) do we really need to know what made them so special or important. I cant really see where this is going. However I'll reserve judgement and hold onto hope till we get more details, not long to go till comic-con now. I really want more Sam and Dean this season.

    spoilers so far(not all confirmed)-
    -heaven and hell in dissaray
-the show will return to its season 1 format
-Dean has retired from hunting, will be 'dragged' back in by Sam
-the brohers have both changed and 'nothing is as it seems'?
-Sam and Dean will have individual arcs too
-Lisa to appear in 2 or 3 eps according to JA
-return of grampa Samuel Campbell-recurring role
-return of Richard Speight Jr as Trickster/Gabriel
-Chuck will not be returning (Rob Benedict), the God question will be left open to interpretation
    -introduction of cousin Christian Campbell-recurring
    -return of Crowley-heavily reccuring
-we wont know the deal with Sam till mid season according to JP
-possible return of Ellen and Jo as ghosts
-episode 4 directed by JA 'weekend at Bobby's'-Bobby heavy, return of Sherriff Mills and a female love interst? for Bobby (not reccuring) ends bloody
-Mischa Collin's role to be reduced because he's getting his own spin-off? (Apparently an announcement is going to be made in regards to Mischa-by producer Sera Gamble-most likely to take place at comic-con)

Im going to hazard a guess and say Dean's arc will be about him juggling his normal life (with his new family Lisa and Ben-they'll mostly be off screen but we'll be subjected to all the angst on screen) with his old life (hunting and Sam)

Sam's arc will most likely take place most off screen/in the background (for the first part of the season anyway) they'll be doing the whole is he Sam or something else?/good or evil? storyline. He'll be hunting and quietly angsting as usual. We'' have to wait to mid season to find out what his deal is/what happened to him (in hell/after/how he got out) much like they did with Dean in season 4.

P.S.My theories are based entirely on past seasons, speculation, spoilers. Like I said comic-con soon that'll be the best place for all the real spoilers and llow down on season 6.

  6. @TvMonkey i think Castiel is Still a Series Regular he was listed as a series regular on the cast list at Upfronts in May i could still see him being in atleast another 13-15 Episodes i think it will affect the following season if there is one though if he gets a spinoff

  7. hey where did you hear about the spin off? thats the only thing i never heard before.

and hum i LOVE him but its a no-no.. He's great cause of dean and the show him alone will be boring, ill watch it though HAAHAHH

  8. I dont think so.. i think he is listed as a regular cause he was one last season but thats it. we ll see.
:D. i want him to be hes just so great

  9. I dont think theres a set number of episodes that he has to be in to qualify as a series regular after all Jim Beaver has been offered to be listed as a series regular before and last season was his highest episode count, I believe he was in only 9 episodes? Cas was in 14 last season (I think?) he could very well be in less this season then again he could be in more? Like I said it was just something I heard that hasnt been confirmed or denied but its been floating around rather alot. There could be absolutely no truth to it what so ever. Lets just wait and see. I could very much see him being in less episodes this season due to the how the season is shaping out so far, Cas doesnt really fit into the more intimate storyline, I imagine his role will be limited to the 'heaven and hell in chaos/dissaray' part and being a handy plot device.

  10. Spin-off. I really don't see that happening/working out.

  11. It's MISHA, and I don't think any spin off is going to happen.

Rob (Chuck) said that he might come back at the right time and he pretty much confirmed that he is God.

  12. Dear Sera Gamble,
Please, stop bringing old bad guys back. Create new ones.
I'm sure you can do something even more evil and scarier than Azazel and Lucifer. Together.
    Cheers
    Ana

  13. So I guess we are to assume that the demon wasn't killed by Sam but sent back to hell. Now that Lucifer's back in his cage, the demons get to roam free again.Just a theory but it sounds like an interesting season.

  14. I'm excited about him coming back Azazel was the original demon who started it all, so he should come back and finish what he started! haha plus got love those yellow contacts!

  15. yeah me either, Cas is really not that interesting. It was just something I read on another board like I said not confirmed.

    ReplyDelete
  16. Sera Gamble implied that Chuck would not be back and that him being GOD was left to interpretation but yeah it was pretty much implied that he was.

  17. no sorry I dont, someone had copied and pasted it on the CW messageboard which is where I found it. They didnt link it.

I knew about Christian but not SID, I would say that because these two are real characters that we have already heard of the rest of this is likely to be true too?

JOEY-sounds like it might be Ben to me? If fit is this would suggest that at least 2 years has past sinse the season finale?

  18. ^^Oohh yeah, I didn't notice about Joey, but it's possible (if those casting sides are all truth) that it's Ben. Since in Season 4 they were searching for a ''kristy'', when it was Ruby, but they changed the name in the casting side to hide she was coming back. Maybe they changed Ben'S name in the casting side to hide that Ben will have a couple of episodes^^

  19. Thanks very much, just posting.

The SID and Christian ones are real, I can confirm that. Not sure
    about the rest.

Do you have a link to the LJ account.

  20. Ah cool, no worries.

If they are all from the same source, then I'd have to say they are
legit. I've not been sent the other Casting Calls yet so I cannot
    confirm 100%.
