Clyde Phillips: We wanted to end the show with authenticity. Basically, Nurse Jackie is a show about a sociopathic drug addict. And you would think that that would be a character that an audience would shy away from, but they welcomed this character in the show into their homes for seven years. And the reason they did is Edie Falco.
One of the words to describe how we want people to feel about this show is compassion. Compassion for storytelling, compassion for the character of Jackie Peyton and compassion for this horrible disease that she has. And indeed it is a disease.
So Jackie did overdose?
She did overdose, yes. When you say overdose, do you mean dying?
No. At first I thought she did but then she woke up, so I assume she is alive as the season ends.
Well, that's interesting.
Were there any other endings you guys were thinking of using?
There was another ending. We were going to do a whole other ending until about halfway through the season. We realized we weren't doing it right. [The alternate ending] was Tony Shalhoub's character plugs in his e-cig to recharge it, and because the hospital is in such terrible shape, it catches fire. The hospital starts burning. Raven, who is the heroin addict, is handcuffed to the bed. Everybody starts wheeling patients out and running out and the fire gets worse and worse and they're outside and they look in and realize they don't have Raven. So Jackie runs back in because all souls are worth saving. She runs back into the hospital and it's falling around her and she can't physically save him because he's handcuffed to a bed. The roof falls on him and people are screaming at her to come out.
We see the ER collapse and then we cut to an alley and that window [in the basement] getting something thrown through it and Jackie comes through that window head first at ground level, almost like a birth. And she sees her friends and colleagues on the sidewalk to her left and starts running down the alley and then stops halfway and turns around and runs the other way and merges with the uptown traffic of humanity and anonymity.
And we were going to end on that, which in it of itself is fine, but we realized we weren't ending on character. We weren't ending on Jackie Peyton. We weren't ending on consequence, so as we realized that we turned the boat around a little bit.

08:35 - Salem - Season 2 Finale Post Mortem - Boss on Major Cliffhanger
After two seasons of fighting to protect herself and those closest to her, Salem's Mary (Janet Montgomery) made the ultimate sacrifice: in order to save her true love, John (Shane West), from certain death, she gave up her own life.
Now that Mary is, seemingly, dead, what can you say about what's next?
Mary is dead; she gave her life to save John. Which is heartbreaking, and the perfect ending to the season -- these doomed lovers again in each other's arms. And one of them was dead. Which really, to me, encapsulates the emotion of the series, which is very much centered around love, as horrific as the show can be.
Make no mistake: she's dead. The question becomes, "How will she come to life? How will she live? What will it mean? What's going to happen." These are things we've only been talking about but haven't settled on. Obviously Mary Sibley is the emotional epicenter of the show, so it's hard to imagine the show without her. And yet at the same time, who knows?
Was her death something the writers had been working toward for a bit?
It was organic; it was early in our discussions for season two. We knew we wanted this year to be the fall of Mary Sibley. She had achieved everything at the end of last year; she was at triumph. And this year, circumstances conspire to take her down. All the way down. And, in fact, at the end of the day, she loses the war. The only thing she has left to give -- and the only triumph she can possibly have -- is to save her lover's life. We didn't know we were going to take it quite that far, but we wanted to see Mary come unraveled.
Given the sacrifice was on his behalf, how will John be coping with Mary's decision next season?
If you look at his reaction to finding her dead in his arms: he loves her still, and always will, no matter what happens. What I really love about the first two seasons is this epic love at the center, that we've managed to nourish and sustain [them], and it's this dance between these two characters. They really weren't together at all this year. They certainly were at odds last year. They really only had a couple of scenes together if you look at season one. Same with this year. They barely have any scenes together, and it's this love story with two people who barely [share screen time]. So should Mary live, the love story will resume in some fashion. We do have some real specific ideas of how that might play out, but I don't want to give it away just yet.

South Park fans have a good long while before they have to worry about the show ending. Comedy Central has creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker signed on for at least two more seasons through 2016, and no telling how long after that. But when the time does come, do Matt and Trey have a story in mind for the very final episode?
To put it bluntly... no, not really. But speaking with IGN's own Ryan McCaffrey at E3 last week, the creators did reveal what a South Park series finale would probably be like. "I think it's going to end with a fizzle, for sure," Parker said with a laugh. "I think it's just going to end with some dud, and we're gonna go, 'F*** this, man,' and walk away."
Stone agreed, "Some sort of whimper. Either drop the mic, get sued, get thrown off television -- something like that."
"Yeah, we've thought that for 18 years," Parker continued. "We're like, 'Okay, well, they're going to cancel us, for sure!' We've been waiting to get canceled for 18 f***ing years.”
Matt and Trey have expressed South Park fatigue before, but at this point they're in it for the long(er) haul. "We won't stop until we get canceled," Stone said. "We're renewing. They have to f***ing cancel us, goddammit!"

08:10 - Orange Is The New Black - Dascha Polanco and Matt McGorry on Season 3's Most Heartbreaking Storyline

As if pregnant inmate Dayanara Diaz’s life wasn’t stressful enough, Season 3 of Orange Is the New Black has heaped even more misery on the soft-spoken prisoner. First, she and Litchfield guard John Bennett (Matt McGorry) got engaged (secretly, illegally) by episode 2… but once Bennett visited Daya’s chaotic, violent home — where their baby was going to be raised — he apparently got so spooked that he fled his job, his home, and worst of all, his responsibility to Daya (Dascha Polanco) and the unborn baby.
What was your reaction when you read Daya and Bennett’s arc for Season 3?
Dascha Polanco: You know, as I get to know Daya and get to actually understand the layers, I think that it’s a moment in her life where she really has to disconnect herself from what her experience has been and start planning what she wants from her life, and for her child. Not giving, not sacrificing, not thinking of others, but thinking of herself at this point. I think it’s very important when, as a woman, you’re watching this show and you see this girl you can relate to. How many women have been in a relationship and have made mistakes over and over, and they realize at a certain point, “I have to start thinking about me. I have to start doing what’s important for me.” I think Daya’s hitting that point right now. She came in like, “Oh, that’s my mom,” and “I’m just going to draw pictures.” Now she’s not even focused on drawing… you don’t really see her living in the fairy tale world, or reminiscing about her childhood. You see her focusing on what is to come.
Matt McGorry: Honestly, it made me sad. I loved Bennett and Daya’s storyline, and the hopeless romantic in me was really rooting for them. One of the brilliant things about OITNB is that characters are so multi-layered, and we see them gain and lose our favor throughout the seasons. For example, I’ve both felt like I wanted to strangle Pennsatucky and have also felt deep sympathy towards her as the seasons have gone on. And when I read about Bennett leaving Daya and the prison, it made me really disappointed in Bennett. The writers chose the storyline that made him as unlikable as he could possibly be in one singular decision. And it’s a decision that the audience doesn’t even really know they’ve witnessed until they keep watching. Beyond that, I knew that it’d be something that a good portion of the fanbase might respond negatively to, and I’m someone that hates to be responsible for anyone being angry or upset.

The “Blackbirds” pilot is a never-ending story… I just learned the project is still very much in the mix but the shooting is now postponed to october, still in Toronto. Another pilot for TNT, “Animal Kingdom”, adapted from the Australian movie of the same name, will start shooting before, in July (in Los Angeles).

08:00 - The O.C. Musical in Development
Seth, Summer, Ryan and Marissa will reunite through song and dance in a musical version of seminal mid-2000s teen drama “The O.C.”
A product of the same team behind “Cruel Intentions: The Musical,” “The O.C.” musical will be adapted and directed by Jordan Ross, with Lindsey Rosin producing. The one-night-only event will go down in Los Angeles on August 30.
At this point, only the roles of Luke Ward, Kirsten Cohen and Josh Schwartz have been cast. That’s right: the show’s creator will be a character in this musical, although not a singing one.

Really hope the Agent Carter and AOS Comic Con panel is a joint one because the casts seem to have a lot of fun together.
